McConnell says no ‘blue state’ coronavirus bailouts, effectively telling New York to drop dead

The iron-fisted Senate majority leader announced Wednesday that his Republican caucus won’t support federal bailouts for New York and other states under enormous economic pressure because of the coronavirus pandemic, drawing harsh backlash from Democrats.

“My guess is their first choice would be for the federal government to borrow money from future generations to send it down to them now so they don’t have to do that. That’s not something I’m going to be in favor of," McConnell (R-Ky.) said of hard-hit states like New York during an interview on Hugh Hewitt’s right-wing radio show.

Instead, McConnell suggested Congress could tinker with Chapter 9 laws so states can restructure their mounting debts by declaring bankruptcy — an option that’s currently only available to cities and local governments.

“I would certainly be in favor of allowing states to use the bankruptcy route,” he said.

The Kentucky senator added later on in the interview, "There’s not going to be any desire on the Republican side to bail out state pensions by borrowing money from future generations.”

US Judge Denies Bid to Open California Churches in Pandemic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday said he will deny a bid by three Southern California churches to hold in-person church services during the pandemic, saying that the government’s emergency powers trump what in normal times would be fundamental constitutional rights.

U.S. District Judge Jesus Bernal in Los Angeles said he will reject the temporary restraining order the churches sought against Gov. Gavin Newsom and other officials. They argued that the state’s stay-at-home orders violate the First Amendment right to freedom of religion and assembly.

“During the state of emergency the executive powers are in effect, in that they are empowered to provide for emergency remedies which may infringe on fundamental constitutional rights,” Bernal said the end of the hour-long hearing. He said he will soon issue a formal ruling.

Many churches have been holding online services. California officials on Friday said religious organizations can have drive-in services so long as congregants don’t have personal contact.

Attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a Republican Party official and chief executive of the nonprofit Center for American Liberty, argued that it is unfair for the state to allow people to attend to other needs that have been deemed essential, like going to the grocery store or picking up meals, while blocking religious services that she said for many believers are as important as eating.

But state Deputy Attorney General Todd Grabarsky said during the hearing held by teleconference that religious organizations are not being singled out by rules that similarly restrict gatherings at concerts, nightclubs, schools — even in-person court hearings.

Halt on military moves to last through June 30

A new directive on the movement of military personnel and their families will bar travel through June 30, but create more flexibility to allow for the deployment of troops serving overseas and some priority troops to change duty stations, a Pentagon official said Saturday.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper has yet to issue the order, which aims to curb the spread of the coronavirus by keeping service members and their families in place, according to Matthew Donovan, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness. However, Esper is expected to sign it into effect Monday, Donovan said.

The new order will replace the travel restrictions put into place in March that have stopped thousands of military moves and forced some deployed units to remain overseas longer than anticipated.

Agents Seize Drugs, Cash, Weapons from Armed Smuggler at Arizona Interior Checkpoint

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents stopped an armed man from smuggling a small quantity of drugs and cash through an interior immigration checkpoint. The agents also seized two firearms in the incident.

Agents assigned to the Interstate 8 Immigration Checkpoint on Wednesday observed a 2013 Subaru Outback approaching for inspection. During the initial immigration interview, the agents identified the driver as a U.S. citizen. As the initial contact continued, a Border Patrol K-9 alerted to an odor it is trained to detect near the rear of the vehicle, according to information obtained from Yuma Sector Border Patrol officials.

The agents referred the 38-year-old driver to the secondary inspection area. Agents conducted a search of the vehicle led to the discovery of drugs, cash, and a shotgun in the trunk. The man allegedly his packages of methamphetamine, hashish, and marijuana in the trunk. The agents also found a large quantity cash during the search.

A search of the interior of the vehicle led to the discovery of a pistol hidden from the passenger floorboard, officials stated.

The agents arrested the driver and turned him over to the Yuma County Narcotics Task Force where he will face prosecution for the possession of the drugs, cash, and firearms. Officials seized the contraband and the vehicle.

Most eligible Americans will receive coronavirus aid checks by April 15, Treasury official says

A senior Treasury official told Fox News on Friday that by the middle of next week, tens of millions of eligible Americans will have money from the federal government directly deposited into their bank accounts.

Payments are already hitting some people’s accounts as of Friday evening, Fox News is told.

The official said Treasury is transmitting the batch of payments to the Federal Reserve for distribution to financial institutions across the nation. Those financial institutions will then distribute the payments into Americans’ bank accounts.

The official explained that this first batch of payments will be received by Americans who filed their taxes in 2018 and/or in 2019 and received a refund via direct deposit.

Filers who did not receive a refund electronically in the last tax year will soon be able to expedite their payment by submitting their bank information to the IRS via the “Get My Payment” app, which the federal government is launching next week.

Those who do not file taxes are now able to go to the IRS website and use the “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” section to enter their bank information in order to receive their payment faster than they would via regular mail.
