Lori Loughlin and Mossimo Giannulli to plead guilty in college admissions scandal
In a major turn of events, actress Lori Loughlin has flipped to a guilty plea in the college admissions scandal.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in the District of Massachusetts made the surprise announcement on Thursday. In a press release, they said the Fuller House star and her clothing designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, will both plead guilty to conspiracy charges in connection with securing the fraudulent admission of their two daughters, Olivia Jade and Isabella Giannulli, to the University of Southern California as purported athletic recruits.
Loughlin will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, while Giannulli will plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud and honest-services wire and mail fraud.
Under the terms of Loughlin’s plea agreement, she will receive a sentence of two months in prison, a $150,000 fine and two years of supervised release with 100 hours of community service.
Giannulli’s agreement states he will serve five months in prison, pay a $250,000 fine and have two years of supervised release with 250 hours of community service.
Both agreements are subject to the court’s approval. They will plead guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel Gorton on a date yet to be determined.

Japan weighs lifting Tokyo's coronavirus emergency May 25
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe confirmed Thursday that the state of emergency remains in place for metropolitan Tokyo and Hokkaido, while that status will now be lifted for Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures.
The government and an expert panel made the decision based on whether the number of new weekly cases fell to a benchmark of 0.5 per 100,000 residents, among other factors, such as medical care capacity and testing capacity.
Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba are considered a single area. Based on a Nikkei estimate, Tokyo's number of weekly cases per 100,000 residents was above the benchmark, at 0.56, while it was 1.08 in Kanagawa as of Wednesday night.
While the tentative end date for the state of emergency is set for May 31, the government expert panel plans to review the status next Monday for the five prefectures. "If the current [improving] situation continues, lifting could be possible," Abe said at a news conference later on Thursday. Tokyo reported 11 new novel coronavirus cases in Tokyo on Thursday. The number of new confirmed cases in the capital has been under 20 for seven straight days. Tokyo is one of the world's most populous cities and has been under a state of emergency since April 7, while the rest of the world has started to reopen.
Business activity has been restricted under the state of emergency. Residents have been asked to stay home, although the public appears to be taking a lax attitude in some areas due to the prolonged restrictions. There are no legal sanctions for going out.
The number of cases in Tokyo and the death toll remain significantly lower than in many other cities. Japan's number of deaths per 100,000 people is 0.61, lower than other Group of Seven countries, such as the U.S. the U.K. and Germany.
Experts are still debating why infections in Japan and some other Asian countries are less common than in the U.S. and much of Europe. Government panel member Shigeru Omi suggested at a news conference that this may be because of the country's high-quality health care system, initial strategy of tracking "cluster" infections and high public health literacy. Others have suggested unproven theories, such as that the Bacille Calmette-Guerin vaccination for tuberculosis have raised Japanese people's immunity to the virus.
The expert team advising the Japanese government notes that Japan's decisions should be based stricter standards compared with other countries, some of which saw new outbreaks after previously slowing the spread of the infection.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said that “it is rich” that Planned Parenthood received emergency loans despite affiliates remaining open for business during the pandemic.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Planned Parenthood affiliates reportedly received $80 million in emergency coronavirus loans, despite congressional regulations that were intended to disqualify them.
Fox News reported on Tuesday that 37 of the organization’s affiliates applied for and received $80 million in loans from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), designed to help small businesses and non-profits stay open and maintain payroll during the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The emergency loan program set up under the CARES Act required that small businesses or non-profits applying for loans have 500 or fewer employees.
For smaller entities that are affiliated with a large national organization, existing Small Business Administration (SBA) affiliation rules would be applied, tabulating the employee count of all the affiliates together with the national organization.
Planned Parenthood—the nation’s largest abortion provider with around 330,000 abortions performed annually and nearly $2 billion in net assets—was supposed to be ineligible for PPP loans.

I am deeply concerned about Kerry's taking of all discussion about clergy (and others) and peace corps off the public's table.

Well, Mr. Chairman, the only comment I would make is to express—I understand Bob Kerrey may have expressed this also—I am deeply concernedabout a pub- lic hearing on this subject, to be candid with you. To whatever de- gree other governments may have questions about whether we do this or not, those questions may be best left without an articulation of policy. But here, it seems to me, if they weren't tainted before, they sure as hell will be tainted afterwards. Whatever doubt or question marks might have arisen, we sort of articulated it as a matter of policy we may do this. Which may leave us no choice but to suggest that there were certain areas where we shouldn't be doing it. I tend to be one of those who feels that most intelligence gathering can be done outside the use of certain kinds of people.
I think—I tend to agree with Senator Coverdell, that the kinds of things we are trying to achieve with the Peace Corps would be extraordinarily limited if people thought we were going to, as a matter of course, potentially use them as intelligence gatherers. So would I think the issue of clergy and others be similarly tainted and the flow of information and our desires for it would be hin- dered ultimately. So it may be that the salutary impact of this will be to elicit from us a prohibition, rather than to have left it in doubt as it has been up to now. But I am very uncomfortable with the pubHc discussions, and that's all that I would say at this point.

During yesterday’s press conference, the Governor was once again asked questions about potential conflicts of interest, and references were made to his Statement of Economic Interest, which we wrote about in this article.
The questions and answers begin at the 1:03:10 mark of the press conference video.
A particular phrase is used several times by the Governor, “Let me be clear“. That particular phrase has become a red flag in the world of politics, and when we hear it, it tells us to pay close attention and fact check the response. That phrase is like prefacing a story with, “honestly” this is a true story. When people preface their response in those fashions it seems to be for a reason and it’s not a good one.
“Don’t know what they are pursuing or what their interests are.”
“I don’t even know that they’ve gone into that business”
So is it clear, the Governor does not know what those businesses he has in a blind trust are pursuing or what their interest is, and he doesn’t even know they went into the business of COVID-19 related matters?
Or is the truth in his later response to a question stemming from a campaign promise to donate profits?
“As far as I know, there’s no business being done by any of them with the state of Illinois”

As far as I know?
An interesting response considering he said, ‘Let me be clear,” multiple times and that he does not know what those businesses are pursuing, or what their interests are, or even know they have gone into that business. If his “clear” response is accurate, how would he know there’s no business being done by any of them with the state of Illinois?
Let us be clear, the response was more like a two-step shuffle than one based in total truth.
Considering his initial response of not knowing anything about those businesses, wouldn’t the appropriate response be, ‘I have no knowledge if any of those businesses are doing business with the state of Illinois but will be happy to look into it, and if they are, I will ensure any profits are donated as promised’?
Oh wait, how can one donate profits in a business if they have no control over it?

Governor Pritzker has filed a motion to remove the Darren Bailey lawsuit from the Circuit Court in Clay county and have it heard in the Federal Courts.
It appears the Governor wishes to ignore the Supreme Court’s position on comity, much like he has ignored the Illinois Supreme Court on Executive Orders.
For those not familiar with comity, US Legal explains it quite well.
“Likewise, on grounds of comity and pursuant to federal law, the Supreme Court has generally refused to allow federal courts to intervene in pending cases in state courts where there is no evidence of bad faith harassment. Comity is “a proper respect for state functions, a recognition of the fact that the entire country is made up of a Union of separate state governments, and a continuance of the belief that the National Government will fare best if the States and their institutions are left free to perform their separate functions in their separate ways.” Usually, this is referred to as ‘Our Federalism’[ii]. [i] Brockett v. Spokane Arcades, Inc., 472 U.S. 491 (U.S. 1985) [ii] Younger v. Harris, 401 U.S. 37 (U.S. 1971) (1971)”
We found no information in the filing that would support any bad faith harassment by the state courts, a hurdle that is going to have to be overcome in our opinion.
The Governor cites 28 U.S.C. § 1343(a)(3) as the authority to have the case removed to the Federal Court.

The Governor has until noon today to file a response to the Motion for Summary Judgement filed by Darren Dailey Monday of this week. A hearing on that motion is scheduled for Friday at 1 pm in Clay County.
