Most eligible Americans will receive coronavirus aid checks by April 15, Treasury official says

A senior Treasury official told Fox News on Friday that by the middle of next week, tens of millions of eligible Americans will have money from the federal government directly deposited into their bank accounts.

Payments are already hitting some people’s accounts as of Friday evening, Fox News is told.

The official said Treasury is transmitting the batch of payments to the Federal Reserve for distribution to financial institutions across the nation. Those financial institutions will then distribute the payments into Americans’ bank accounts.

The official explained that this first batch of payments will be received by Americans who filed their taxes in 2018 and/or in 2019 and received a refund via direct deposit.

Filers who did not receive a refund electronically in the last tax year will soon be able to expedite their payment by submitting their bank information to the IRS via the “Get My Payment” app, which the federal government is launching next week.

Those who do not file taxes are now able to go to the IRS website and use the “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” section to enter their bank information in order to receive their payment faster than they would via regular mail.

A Catholic leader is calling for a mass exorcism amid the coronavirus pandemic, as Christians around the world celebrate Holy Week in isolation.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano of Rome called on his fellow clergy to perform a mass exorcism on Holy Saturday, the day between Good Friday, Jesus' crucifixion, and Easter Sunday, celebrating his resurrection.

Republican and Democratic senators unanimously voted to pass a coronavirus relief bill late Wednesday that gives $350,000,000 to assist refugees and migrants.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s relief package would include $300,000,000 for refugee assistance.

The new bill, approved by the Senate and now headed to the House, includes an additional $50 million on top of Pelosi’s initial $300 million for refugees.

What Is Habeas Corpus?

A writ of habeas corpus (which literally means to "produce the body") is a Court Order demanding that a public official (such as a warden) deliver an imprisoned individual to the Court and show a valid reason for that person's detention.

In many countries, authorities may take citizens and incarcerate them for months or years without charging them. Those imprisoned have no legal means to protest or challenge the imprisonment.

The framers of the U.S. Constitution wanted to prohibit this kind of abuse of power in the new United States. Therefore, they included a specific clause in the Constitution to safeguard the right, known as habeas corpus.

Writ of Habeas Corpus: How it Works

The procedure provides a means for prison inmates, or others acting on their behalf, to dispute the legal basis for confinement.

Habeas corpus has deep roots in English common law. Often, the court holds a hearing on the matter, during which the inmate and the government can both present evidence about whether there is a lawful basis for jailing the person. The court may also issue and enforce subpoenas in order to obtain additional evidence.

Depending on what the evidence reveals, the Judge may grant the inmate relief such as:

*Release from prison,

*Reduction in the sentence,

*An order halting illegal conditions of confinement, or

*A declaration of rights.

Hundreds of cops are being deployed to a task force assigned to tell people to stand away from each other.

Starting Monday, 660 cops — 536 officers plus supervisors — will check parks, pedestrian plazas and other places people gather, such as health care facilities, supermarkets and drug stores, to make sure people are at least six feet apart.

The formation of the task force comes amid concerns that too many New Yorkers, particularly young people, are ignoring coronavirus social distancing guidelines.

Cops hope they won’t have to arrest anyone as they’ve done at a handful of restaurants that failed to shut down their seating sections.

MORGANTOWN — Mylan’s Morgantown plan is restarting production of an anti-malaria medication that is under study as a potential treatment for the COVID-19 virus. The drug is hydroxychloroquine sulfate; the tablets are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of malaria, lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. President Trump on Thursday touted its cousin, chloroquine, as a potential treatment and mistakenly said it has been FDA approved for COVID-19.

Mylan clarified, “Although the product is not currently approved for use in the treatment of COVID-19, it is listed by the World Health Organization as a drug under investigation for efficacy against the coronavirus.” The drug had been in short supply earlier in March, according to news reports, but Mylan and another generic drug firm, Israel-based Teva, are both ramping up production. Mylan said in a press release, “The company continues to focus its efforts on protecting our employees, producing critically needed medications, and turning our scientific and operational expertise towards identifying additional ways we may be able to assist in the massive prevention, diagnosis and treatment efforts needed to counter the spread of COVID-19.” The restart of hydroxychloroquine sulfate in Morgantown in order to meet potential increased demand is part of that effort, Mylan said. In the coming weeks, Mylan also plans to begin production outside the U.S. “We look forward to working with governments and health authorities globally to ensure patient access to this medicine as and where needed,” Mylan said. Democrats block advancement of critical economic relief package

Senate Democrats Sunday blocked a critical economic relief package worth more than $2 trillion, stalling plans to pass the bill by Monday and send it to the House. Lawmakers and the Trump administration hoped to send a positive message to unstable stock markets and to those worried about the damage to the economy and the job losses caused by the spread of the virus. The measure includes sending direct cash payments that would average about $3,000 per family and expanding unemployment insurance, as well as $350 billion in aid to struggling small businesses. It also provides $500 billion in loans to industries hurt by the economic slowdown.

But Democrats are holding out for big changes to the bill, which they argue creates a "slush fund" for big industries and lacks sufficient protections for workers. They voted against a procedural step to start debate on the bill, which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hoped to pass by Monday. McConnell, visibly angry on the Senate floor, entered a motion to reconsider the measure and said he'd bring it up again for a vote by Monday. PARIS - Iranian authorities have released French academic Roland Marchal, who has been imprisoned in Iran since June 2019, a French presidency official said on Saturday.

Marchal is due to arrive in France around midday on Saturday, the official said.French President Emmanuel Macron urged Iran to also release French citizen Fariba Adelkhah, who is still imprisoned, the official added. Adelkhah also holds an Iranian passport.

Iran and France have agreed to swap Marchal, held on security charges, and an Iranian detained by Paris over alleged violations of US sanctions against Tehran, Iranian state media reported on Friday.
