Maybe I'm just imagining this but...

I find it 'surprising' how evenly dispersed & proportional (to population density) the Coronavirus spreads through 1st world (developed) countries, while many 3rd world countries appear to have very little impact so far

My state has relatively few cases (at the moment) but most of the counties in this state have ~1 case each...like someone "seeded" it around evenly to make sure the entire population would feel/be "at risk"

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea on Monday reported its lowest number of new coronavirus cases since the peak so far on Feb. 29 and the extended downward trend in daily infections has boosted hopes that Asia's largest outbreak outside China may be abating.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said there were 64 new cases on Monday, taking the national tally to 8,961.

The death toll rose by one to 110.

The new numbers marked the 12th day in a row the country has posted new infections of around 100 or less, compared with the peak of 909 cases recorded on Feb. 29.

The stats around corona have always been fishy-looking, especially anything coming from WHO. Here's another US article about flu stats-can be compared with corona, much to the detriment of the flu (as usual).

Suspect they could pin down the most dire effects of corona to pretty specific subgroups-like heavy smokers or long-time smokers (like many of the 'elderly') but they don't want to. The DS wants to keep the narrative going that "nobody is safe."

- Pneumonia and influenza mortality levels have been low, but 149 influenza-associated deaths in children have been reported so far this season. This number is higher than recorded at the same time in every season since reporting began in 2004-05, except for the 2009 pandemic.

- CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 38 million flu illnesses, 390,000 hospitalizations and 23,000 deaths from flu.

- Nationally, the percent of specimens testing positive for influenza at clinical laboratories continued to decrease while ILI activity increased for the second week in a row after declining for three weeks. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, more people may be seeking care for respiratory illness than usual at this time.

- Nationally, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses are now the most commonly reported influenza viruses this season. Previously, influenza B/Victoria viruses predominated nationally.

- A total of 556 additional viruses (211 A(H1N1)pdm09, 32 A(H3N2), and 313 B) collected in Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wisconsin were analyzed for resistance to neuraminidase inhibitors by pyrosequencing assay.

New York's Ventilator Rationing Plan

Coronavirus is causing working-age people to worry about missing paychecks, caring for kids home from school, stockpiling groceries and canceling plans. But people in their 50s, 60s or older have bigger worries. Many are lying awake wondering if this is how they're going to die. At its most severe, coronavirus attacks the lungs, making it impossible to breathe without a ventilator. Landing in the hospital on a ventilator is bad. But worse is being told you can't have one. After learning that the state's stockpile of medical equipment had 16,000 fewer ventilators than New Yorkers would need in a severe pandemic, Gov. Andrew Cuomo came to a fork in the road in 2015. He could have chosen to buy more ventilators. Instead, he asked his health commissioner, Howard Zucker to assemble a task force and draft rules for rationing the ventilators they already had.

That task force came up with rules that will be imposed when ventilators run short. Patients assigned a red code will have the highest access, and other patients will be assigned green, yellow or blue (the worst) depending on a "triage officer's" decision. In truth, a death officer. Let's not sugarcoat it. It won't be up to your own doctor. Now the pandemic is actually here. Cuomo's grim reaper rules will be applied. New York City's deputy commissioner for disease control Demetre Daskalakis is anticipating "some very serious difficult decisions." So far, in New York City, 1 out of every 4 people with a confirmed case has been hospitalized, and 44% of them have needed a ventilator. The task force claimed there was no point in buying ventilators because there's also a shortage of doctors and nurses trained to use them. Five years ago, that problem could have been fixed, too. Even now, the National Disaster Medical System can send staff to hot spots like New York.

In Wuhan, China, doctors recently faced the grim arithmetic of 1,000 patients needing ventilators and only 600 available. Italy's rationing ventilators, too. Dr. Daniele Macchini, who practices in Italy, says "every ventilator becomes like gold." Better than gold, if it keeps you alive. But in New York, rationing ventilators should be unnecessary. The state knew of the shortage, had the money, and should have bought the lifesaving equipment, instead of making a plan on who should live or die. U.S. manufacturers are making ventilators and filling orders from around the world.

In Italy, the death rate from coronavirus is a staggering 7%, more than double what's occurring in many other countries. That's partly because almost a quarter of Italy's population is over 65 and especially vulnerable. The other reason is that Italy's universal national health system promises free care but delivers stingy care. Italy has only around one-third as many intensive care beds per capita as the United States. Coronavirus patients are being turned away. Expect the same dire results in the United Kingdom. The British National Health Service allocates about one-fifth as many intensive care beds per capita as American hospitals do. Bernie Sanders, are you watching? What's happening in Italy and the U.K. is proof that single-payer is not the way to go.

Hospitals here in the U.S. will face severe challenges in the coming weeks, including shortages of space, equipment and personnel. But nothing compared with the extreme in Europe's national health systems. Americans don't want government holding back the very things we need to survive. New York should never again decide to ration lifesaving equipment when it can be bought. That's a lesson learned. Now's not the time for political criticism. Now's the time to get our sanitized hands on ventilators, no matter what.

Houston Gives Luxury Hotel $43M Tax Break

The city council voted 16-1 to approve a special deal for a W Hotel

A new luxury hotel coming to Houston will get a free ride, thanks to a special deal approved by the city council. Houston will be handing out a $43 million tax break to bring a luxury W Hotel to the city.

The deal was approved overwhelmingly by city council members, with little discussion, in a vote of 16-1. Amy Peck was the lone dissenting vote.

Backlash from the community was swift:

“The fact that the city council approved a $43 million tax break for a luxury hotel is a slap in the face,” said Charles Blain of Urban Reform, a Houston-based organization that advocates conservative reforms to city government. “But what’s worse is that only one council member, Amy Peck, stood against the deal.”

The deal is a change from the city’s original development plan. When proposals for a hotel were solicited in 2014, Houston officials made it clear there would be no tax abatements.

“When the city originally sent the proposal out, they told potential bidders that the project wouldn’t include any tax incentives,” said Blain. “It wasn’t until the current vendor was selected that the tax incentives were added on. This deal was questionable from day one and should infuriate Houston taxpayers.”

“Even the chairman of Houston First, the agency charged with tourism for the city, said the deal wasn’t the best possible deal for taxpayers,” Blain continued.

While bad for taxpayers, the deal is very good for Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s cronies. Developer Al Kashani, who is leading the project, served on Turner’s inaugural committee and has donated to his campaign. Two investors involved with the project have also given money to Turner and serve on boards he appointed.

Former employees and fans of Ellen DeGeneres have taken to Twitter to blast the renowned talk show host for her alleged 'mean' behavior.

Comedian Kevin T. Porter kicked the entire social media movement off on Friday, when he sent out a tweet urging people to message him 'the most insane stories [they've] heard' about DeGeneres in an effort to raise money for the Los Angeles Food Bank.

Shortly after posting, Porter was flooded with written accounts by various Twitter users who claimed to have had less than savory interactions with Ellen - who he labeled as 'notoriously one of the meanest people alive' - over the years.

ight now we all need a little kindness. You know, like Ellen Degeneres always talks about!,' wrote Porter. '[And] I'll match every [story] w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank.'

Before scanning his Twitter thread for the best responses, Porter reminded his audience that the stories they submit 'have to be real! Cause we need some REAL kindness right now.'

According to one user, former head writer for The Ellen DeGeneres show Karen Kilgariff was 'fired' because she 'wouldn't cross the picket line' during a writer's strike.

'When Karen wouldn't cross the picket line she was fired and Ellen never spoke to her again,' they wrote.

Alleged hostility and mistreatment of writers proved to be a reigning theme in the thread, with one user claiming that her 'friend' who had written for Ellen 'for two years' was never acknowledged by her.

Report: China Stopped Testing for COVID-19. That's Why There Are Zero New Cases.

"China’s National Health Commission on Friday reported no new local coronavirus cases, which marked the second time it has done so since the epidemic began.

President Donald Trump said Sunday at the White House that he is glad he is president during the coronavirus crisis despite losing billions of dollars.

Donald Trump was asked by reporters during a White House press briefing if he had sold stocks during the crisis.

“No, I don’t have stock,” Trump replied. “I own things.”

He added that he did “not even think about” alternating any investments.

Trump said that the question from the reporter was “nasty,” noting that it cost him billions of dollars to run for president.

“It cost me billions of dollars to be president, and I am so happy I did it because who cares? I am really happy with the job that we’re doing, and i’m really glad that this team and me are here.”

He recalled attending a charity event for the Robin Hood Foundation just after announcing his run for president when he was both booed and cheered upon arrival. Trump said that his wife Melania recalled that she had never heard him booed before

He noted that since he became president, people also began suing him, costing him a lot of money in lawsuits.

“Everybody is suing me … I’m being sued all over the place,” he said. “And doing very well, but it’s unfair.”

Trump reminded reporters how difficult it was for a wealthy person to run for president.

“I think it’s very hard for rich people to run for office,” he said. “It’s far more costly; it’s just a very tough thing.

But he repeated that he was glad he was president, despite the costs.

“With all of that being said, I’m so glad I did it,” Trump said.

He noted that he was proud to help the country as president and fight the coronavirus crisis.

“I’m a wartime president,” Trump said. “This is a war, it’s a different kind of war that we’ve ever had.”

Look at everything and understand that there was a plan to drop a virus and use the news to cause massive chaos, while a very real virus spread across the US and we killed each other off. The Fed’s announcement Monday removes any dollar limits from its plans to support the flow of credit through an economy that has been ravaged by the viral outbreak. The central bank’s all-out effort has now gone beyond even the extraordinary drive it made to rescue the economy from the 2008 financial crisis.

“The coronavirus pandemic is causing tremendous hardship across the United States and around the world,” the Fed said in a statement. “Our nation’s first priority is to care for those afflicted and to limit the further spread of the virus. While great uncertainty remains, it has become clear that our economy will face severe disruptions. Aggressive efforts must be taken across the public and private sectors to limit the losses to jobs and incomes and to promote a swift recovery once the disruptions abate.”

Markets reversed sharply after the announcement. Dow Jones futures swung more than 1,000 points from about 500 down to a rise of roughly 500. The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond also fell, a sign that more investors are willing to purchase the securities.

The Fed also said it will set up three new lending facilities that will provide up to $300 billion by purchasing corporate bonds, buying a wider range of municipal bonds, and purchasing asset-backed securities.

It also says it will buy an unlimited amount of Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities in an effort hold down interest rates and ensure those markets function smoothly.

The Fed last week had said it would buy $500 billion of Treasuries and $200 billion of mortgage-backed securities, then quickly ran through roughly half those amounts by the end of the week. On Monday, the New York Federal Reserve said it would purchase $75 billion of Treasuries and $50 billion of mortgage-backed securities each day this week.

That is a much larger amount than the Fed deployed in the financial crisis and its aftermath. In 2012 the Fed launched its third round of asset purchases, known as quantitative easing, which consisted of $45 billion of Treasury purchases a month.

For the anecdotal observation file:

Friday and Saturday I took a 22 hour round trip drive for personal reasons. The trip occurred through a rural part of the US that has NOT been a major COVID-19 hotspot.

Part of the trip involved interstate travel on an important east-west trucking route that spans the US. I can report that heavy truck traffic is quite normal. At this time there should be no need to worry about major disruptions to the grocery stores.

BEIJING - The number of novel coronavirus patients in Wuhan, the epicenter of China's virus outbreak, was manipulated in time for President Xi Jinping's visit last week, a local doctor told Kyodo News Thursday.

A number of symptomatic patients were abruptly released from quarantine early while a portion of testing was suspended, the doctor said.

China's health authorities on Thursday reported no new cases of coronavirus infection in Wuhan, marking the first time for the city to have no instances of local transmission since the viral epidemic began late last year.

But the doctor, who works at a quarantine facility, said the government tally "cannot be trusted."

The number of patients currently undergoing treatment is deliberately being reduced in an effort to show the Xi government's success in combatting the epidemic, he said.

The doctor, in his 40s, whose responsibilities include determining whether a patient is discharged from a hospital expressed strong concerns that if the truth remains hidden from the public, another outbreak could occur.

Guidelines from the National Health Commission stipulate that patients must test negative for the virus twice and be cleared for pneumonia via a computerized tomography scan before being discharged.

But according to the doctor, from around the time of Xi's visit, even though his patients still exhibited signs of pneumonia, the patients were released from quarantine at the discretion of a "specialist" from the epidemic prevention and control authority.

From then on, the criteria for discharging patients became loose, and "a mass release of infected patients began," he said.

Also, patient interviews with those exhibiting symptoms such as fever were simplified, and blood tests to detect antibodies produced during infection were discontinued. As a result, "suspected patients were released back into society," he said.

Xi, on March 10, made his first visit to the central Chinese city of Wuhan since the outbreak began, emphasizing the government's achievements in its epidemic prevention and control efforts.

According to the National Health Commission, nearly 58,000 people have been discharged from hospitals in Hubei Province, where Wuhan is the capital. Beginning in mid-March, the number of new infections in Wuhan has stayed below a dozen patients a day.

The Fed Is Now Buying Investment Grade Bond ETFs Like LQD

Over the weekend, we reported that virtually all of Wall Street was praying for nothing short of divine intervention from the Fed, but would be content with the announcement of corporate bond buying, such as Bank of America..and Deutsche Bank. On Monday morning, that's precisely what they got when the Fed announced that it would indeed start purchasing corporate bonds. And in a way, the Fed exceeded expectations, because unlike the ECB which only buys bonds in the primary market, the Fed announced that in addition to a Primary Market Corporate Credit Facility, it would also buy Investment Grade bonds in the secondary market. Here are some details: as was widely expected, the Fed created a SPV that will purchase in the secondary market corporate debt issued by eligible issuers. What is more interesting is that the SPV will purchase eligible individual corporate bonds as well as eligible corporate bond portfolios in the form of exchange traded funds (“ETFs”) in the secondary market. In other words, the Fed is now active in the equity market, even if focusing only on securities collateralized by IG bonds (for now).

Completing the SPV details, the NY Fed announced that will be secured by all the assets of the SPV, in order not to be susceptible to a capital loss (unlike the BOJ which has suffered trillions in paper losses on its equity ETFs). The Department of the Treasury, using the Exchange Stabilization Fund, will make an initial $10 billion equity investment in the SPV in connection with the Facility. But going back to the key point, here was the highlight of the term sheet:

Eligible ETFs. The Facility also may purchase U.S.-listed ETFs whose investment objective is to provide broad exposure to the market for U.S. investment grade corporate bonds.

In other words, as of this moment the NY Fed will be actively buying the LQD ETF (and various other IG version) to stabilize the corporate bond market.

Los Angeles County social workers are under fire again over the suspicious death of a Palmdale boy whose family had previously been investigated after serious allegations of abuse.

L.A. County’s child welfare chief faced sharp questioning Tuesday over why a 4-year-old Palmdale boy, who died earlier this month under what authorities call suspicious circumstances, wasn’t removed from his parents’ home amid abuse claims — despite a recent court order.

“This death happened on my watch,” Bobby Cagle, director of the county Department of Children and Family Services, told the Board of Supervisors. “I fully accept the responsibility for the work that was done. I also fully accept the responsibility for understanding what went wrong, what we can do better, and to implement that as quickly as possible.”

Noah died over the Fourth of July weekend. His parents, Jose and Ursula, called 911 saying Noah had drowned in a swimming pool of an apartment complex, but Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva has said the boy’s injuries were not consistent with that claim.

Foul play is suspected, given the years of documented abuse reports involving his parents. ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) – A strong earthquake in Croatia on Sunday caused panic, the evacuation of hospitals and widespread damage including to the capital’s iconic cathedral – all amid a partial coronavirus lockdown.

A 15-year-old was reported to be in critical condition and 16 other people were injured, authorities said.

The European seismological agency, EMSC, said the 5.3 earthquake struck a wide area north of the capital, Zagreb, at 6:23 a.m. (0523 GMT). The epicenter was 7 kilometers (4 miles) north of Zagreb at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

At least four weaker temblors followed the initial quake.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said the earthquake was the biggest in Zagreb in the last 140 years.

President Donald Trump did something difficult and remarkable during the White House press briefing on Sunday: he stood up for the free market in a moment of crisis, when at least half the country is pushing him to abandon it.

A reporter asked the president why he was not using the Defense Production Act to nationalize industries to take control of companies and force them to produce needed health care equipment for treating coronavirus patients.

Trump’s answer was that the United States does not believe in nationalization, and does not need it, either:

Q: Mr. President, when it comes to the Defense Production Act. We know that governments across the country all day today were pleading with you to utilize. the DPA, to us it —

Trump: Well, it depends which governments you’re talking about.

Q: — specifically for that allocation piece that you mentioned, Mr. [Peter] Navarro. Why not use it now, if that would answer their pleas for help?

Trump: Well, we are using it now. The fact that I signed it, it’s in effect. But you know, we’re a country not based on nationalizing our business. Call a person over in Venezuela. Ask them: how did nationalization of their businesses work out? Not too well. The concept of nationalizing our business is not a good concept.

The president continued by explaining that the private sector knew better than the government how to produce needed commodities — and which companies should produce them:

Trump: Here’s the beauty of it. If we go out and we want, let’s say, masks, we don’t know who to call. But Hanes, who makes things of cotton, various elements, lots of things, it’s a great company. They called us, and they said, “We’re going to make millions of masks.” We got a call today from 3M…

The president went on to explain that sometimes a company that government might think was best to produce a needed commodity might not actually be able to do it:

Trump: If you go the national route, nationalization route. We’re gonna tell a company to make a ventilator? They don’t even know what a ventilator is! In the case of one company, they used to make them, years ago, and they know how to make them. You know, it’s a very complex piece of equipment, frankly.

The president added that while nationalization was useful as a threat, it could also be damaging as a threat, because of negative signals it sent about the economy — and he reiterated that companies were stepping forward without the threat even being necessary:

Trump: We have the threat of doing it if we need it. We may have to use of somewhere along the supply chain in a minor way. But we have millions of masks being done. We have respirators, we have ventilators…

When this was announced, it sent tremors through our business community, and through our country, because basically what are you doing? You’re talking about — you’re going to nationalize an industry, or you’re going to nationalize? You’re going to take away companies? You’re going to tell companies what to do? The truth is most people — nobody would know where to start. There are companies out there that you wouldn’t think of that have called us …

It is impossible to overstate the courage of this stance.

During the 2008 financial crisis, the Bush administration rushed to bail out Wall Street — thereby destroying the incentives of the market, creating new moral hazards. Companies that had made risky bets were insulated from the actual consequences of those bets. Wall Street recovered; Main Street did not — at least, not until much later.

Bush gave an address in November 2008, after Congress had passed the bailouts, and Barack Obama had won the election. “I’m a market-oriented guy, but not when I’m faced with the prospect of a global meltdown,” Bush said.

He added: “[T]he long-term solution to today’s problems is sustained economic growth. And the surest path to that growth is free markets and free people.”

But it was far too late for that.

Bush threw free market principles overboard to bail out Wall Street. Trump, in contrast, is sticking to free market principles while coming to the aid of Main Street.

Fed Will Limit Buybacks & Dividends For Companies Using Its Credit Facility

In the term sheet for its Primary Market Corporate Credit Facility which greenlighted the Fed to purchase investment grade bonds and issue loans directly to eligible issuers in the primary market (as opposed to the secondary market where the Fed will also buy IG ETFs such as the LQD), it had the following restrictive language:

At the borrower’s election, all or a portion of the interest due and payable on each interest payment date may be payable in kind for 6 months, extendable at the discretion of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. Such interest amount will be added to, and made part of, the outstanding principal amount of the bond or loan. A borrower that makes this election may not pay dividends or make stock buybacks during the period it is not paying interest.

Said otherwise any company that takes advantage of the Fed's PMCCF and then elects to suspend payments on interest and/or principal by converting these to PIK payments, effectively adding them to the loan principal, will not be allowed to buyback stocks or issue dividends. Which is good. What is not good is that the inverse is also true: the Fed is not limiting buybacks or dividends for companies that borrow money directly from the Fed as long as they remain in compliance with paying their interest on time.

In other words, while the Fed is trying to appear draconian in its "negative covenants", it is also saying that companies that remain solvent and liquid can use any amount of proceeds sourced directly from the Fed, and use them to repurchase stock!

ROME - One of the things about a lockdown is that it encourages mental exercises which, under other conditions, might seem utterly pointless. Here in Italy, where it often requires an hour or so just to be allowed into a grocery store right now, one has to be endlessly creative about finding ways to occupy the time.

For those of us fascinated by the Vatican and its vicissitudes, here’s one such thought experiment: What would happen if Pope Francis were to die or resign today?

To state the obvious, that’s deeply unlikely. Anyone who’s been watching Francis’s livestreamed daily Mass knows there is definitely no health crisis around the pope - he comes off as alert, determined, and good to go. It’s also highly improbable he would opt to step down smack dab in the middle of a global crisis.

However, the point of a “what if?” exercise isn’t that it’s plausible, but that it’s amusing, so let’s play out the string.

Under the rules as they stand now, a conclave would have to begin no more than 20 days after the sede vacante began, meaning when the pope died or resigned. Cardinals could decide to push things back, but given historical skittishness about doing anything that might call into question the legitimacy of an election, in all likelihood they’d feel compelled to stick to the procedures as given.

If the clock started ticking today, that outer limit for a conclave to begin would be April 10, and quite possibly it would start earlier in hopes of having a new pope before Easter, which is April 12.

Don’t Put More People in New York’s Jails During a Pandemic

The last thing New York needs right now, as it fights a deadly pandemic, is more people in jail.

So it is vital that Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the State Legislature, who must reach a budget deal by April 1, resist calls to roll back criminal justice reforms, changes likely to be made through that budget agreement.

The reforms, which took effect Jan. 1, ban bail for defendants charged with most misdemeanor and nonviolent offenses.

For months now, even before the law went into effect, the state’s powerful law enforcement lobby has pushed to overturn key provisions of the reforms, blaming them for an uptick in crime. The evidence for that is circumstantial, at best.

The most concerning push is an effort by some law enforcement officials, including New York’s police commissioner, Dermot Shea, to go even further and change the state law to allow judges to consider the “dangerousness” of a defendant when setting bail.

This is a bad idea, and an unnecessary one. New York law didn’t allow such discretion before the reforms. Criminal justice experts say that is likely to worsen racial disparities in the courts. And for years in New York, judges used their discretion to regularly set bail poor people couldn’t afford.

Rolling back these reforms is almost certain to lead to an increase in the number of people in New York’s jails. In normal times, that would be unacceptable.

But as New York stares down one of the worst public health crises in a century, it is unthinkable.

Just ask the people who work in the jails. On Tuesday, the New York City Board of Correction, which oversees the jails, requested that the city and state “drastically” reduce the number of people in custody, which this week hovered around 5,400. The board asked the city to begin with the most vulnerable people in custody, and those serving sentences of under a year.

Over the past several days, a total of about 65 people were released from the city’s jails. The task may not be a simple one, but to make an impact, Mayor Bill de Blasio, along with the city’s prosecutors, who are involved in the process, will have to work much faster. They need help from Governor Cuomo, who can move to release state offenders who are in local jails because of technical parole violations.

This is not just a New York concern. Montana’s chief justice on Friday issued a letter to judges across that state asking them to take similar measures. “We ask that you review your jail rosters and release, without bond, as many prisoners as you are able, especially those being held for nonviolent offenses,” Mike McGrath, chief justice of the Montana Supreme Court, wrote.

In New York, at least one person in custody at Rikers, and one correction officer, have already tested positive for coronavirus.

On March 18, a day after the Board of Correction made the request, Ross MacDonald, the chief doctor at the Rikers Island jail complex, pleaded with officials to do more. “You must not leave them in harm’s way,” Dr. MacDonald wrote on Twitter. “We will put ourselves at personal risk and ask little in return. But we cannot change the fundamental nature of jail,” he continued. “A storm is coming and I know what I’ll be doing when it claims my first patient. What will you be doing? What will you have done? We have told you who is at risk. Please let as many out as you possibly can.”

A widespread coronavirus outbreak in New York’s jails would be catastrophic, leading to avoidable deaths and putting already vulnerable communities at greater risk.

Democrats are in a tough spot. The law enforcement lobby will continue to bring heat on them. New York Republicans will use the bail reforms as a wedge issue in the November elections.

But now is a time for political courage. Preserve the criminal justice reforms and focus on saving lives.

It is impossible to overstate the courage of this stance

During the 2008 financial crisis, the Bush administration rushed to bail out Wall Street — thereby destroying the incentives of the market, creating new moral hazards. Companies that had made risky bets were insulated from the actual consequences of those bets. Wall Street recovered; Main Street did not — at least, not until much later.

Bush gave an address in November 2008, after Congress had passed the bailouts, and Barack Obama had won the election. “I’m a market-oriented guy, but not when I’m faced with the prospect of a global meltdown,” Bush said.

He added: “[T]he long-term solution to today’s problems is sustained economic growth. And the surest path to that growth is free markets and free people.”

But it was far too late for that.

Bush threw free market principles overboard to bail out Wall Street. Trump, in contrast, is sticking to free market principles while coming to the aid of Main Street.

No one would confuse Trump’s philosophy with a minimalist, purely libertarian approach. He is about to pump trillions of dollars of emergency stimulus into the economy — if all goes well.

But he is not doing what the media, and the left, want him to do: to set the dangerous precedent of state control of the economy, when he can still do otherwise.

He is standing up for freedom during a crisis, not after a crisis — because he knows the private sector works best

As cases of COVID-19 soar in Michigan and deaths mount statewide as well as across the nation, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was expected to announce a "stay at home" order for Michigan at 11 a.m. Monday, sources told the Free Press.

The governor's office was holding a conference call Monday morning with business leaders, who have publicly expressed concern about such an order, which is expected to take effect at midnight tonight, doing too much damage to the state's economy.

"I'm optimistic that the the governor will find that middle ground," Michigan Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Rich Studley said Monday, just ahead of the call with the governor's office.

The order, which was highly anticipated and is effective starting at midnight tonight, draws on Whitmer's broad executive powers under a state of emergency. Though sweeping, it includes exemptions for essentials such as:

THE PRESIDENT: Well, we are using it now. The fact that I signed it, it’s in effect. But, you know, we’re a country not based on nationalizing our business. Call a person over in Venezuela; ask them how did nationalization of their businesses work out. Not too well. The concept of nationalizing our business is not a good concept.

But I’ll tell you why — as Peter said, we may have to use it someplace along the chain, but we’re getting calls. Here’s the beauty of it: If we go out and we want, let’s say, masks, we don’t know who to call on masks. But Hanes, who makes things of cotton — various elements, lots of things; it’s a great company — they called us and they said, “We’re going to make millions of masks.”

We got a call today from 3M — there’s a big article today — the head of 3M — they’re going to make tremendous products, and they’re more or less in that business. And if they’re not — like, for instance, General Motors spoke to us; Ford spoke to us about doing ventilators.

The beauty is, they’re calling us. If you go the national route — nationalization route — we’re going to tell a company to make a ventilator; they don’t even know what a ventilator is. In the case of one company, they used to make them years ago and they know how to make them. You know, it’s a very complex piece of equipment, frankly.

So what we’re doing is — I think Peter said it maybe better than anybody is going to say it. We have the threat of doing it, if we need it. We may have to use it somewhere along the supply chain, in a minor way. But we have millions of masks being done. We have respirators. We have ventilators. We have a lot of things happening right now. So just the threat of using it.

But using it’s actually a big deal. I mean, when this was announced, it sent tremors through our business community and through our country because, basically, what are you doing? You’re talking about — you’re going to nationalize an industry or you’re going to nationalize — you’re going to take away companies. You’re going to tell companies what to do.

The truth is, most people — nobody would know where to start. There are companies out there, that you wouldn’t think of, that have called us, that say, “We can do ventilators. We used to do them years ago.” And they can do them in large quantities. Other comp- — if I call companies and say, “You build ventilators,” they don’t even know what a ventilator is.

So it’s really working out very well. One of the reasons I read the numbers to you is because we’ve given vast numbers of just about everything. We’ve taken it out of our supply — out of our supply, and we’re restocking our supply.

But we’re really backing up the governors. The governors have to go out, do their things. And you have a lot of governors — they’ve done a fantastic job. You have some that haven’t. Usually, it’s the ones that complain that have the problems.

But we’ve had a great relationship, as an example, with Governor Cuomo, with Governor Newsom. We’ve had a great relationship with the State of Washington. Those are the three hotbeds. Those are three hotbeds.

Now, we’re also dealing with other states, as the Admiral said yesterday. We’re dealing with all of the states, actually, in one form or another. Some are very — affected in a very minor way, where you have two people or three people. And I don’t even mean deaths; I mean, literally, cases.

And that’s different than New York, where you have, you know, tremendous — where everybody — I lived there for a long time. Everybody is extremely close, tight. And you have a lot of cases in New York. You have a lot of cases in New York.

And we’re helping Governor Cuomo. We’re helping Governor Newsom. They’ve been — frankly, they’ve been total gentlemen. They want to get it done and we want to get it done.

But doing — doing it the way we’re doing it is much better. It’s really much better.

According to the Hill: A Democratic aide said that the small business provision was drafted to exclude non-profits who receive Medicaid from being eligible for Small Business Administration assistance offered under the bill. That, according to the aide, would impact Planned Parenthood but also community health centers, rape crisis centers and disability service providers. Planned Parenthood is identified as a nonprofit, not a small business. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Sunday she will be moving ahead with her own emergency relief package and ended hopes for an immediate vote in the Senate to further assistance for the nation in the midst of the crisis caused by the virus that originated in China.

Breitbart News reported: Senate Republicans and the White House have insisted that they will continue to push for the $1.6 trillion economic relief package, which would include $350 billion in support for small businesses and $250 billion for unemployment insurance. The package would also include direct cash payments to individuals around $1,200 per individual, with additional funds going to families with children. Politico also reported that Pelosi’s announcement is an indication she will not be simply taking up the Senate bill and moving it forward on a unanimous consent basis: That also means the House may be forced back into session, even though many lawmakers are concerned about the threat from the coronavirus and the difficulties in reaching Capitol Hill from their home districts.

Fox News reported on the impasse: Democrats also pushed for add-ons including food security aid, small business loans and other measures for workers — saying the three months of unemployment insurance offered under the draft plan was insufficient. The Wall Street Journal‘s Kimberly Strassel also weighed in on the stalemate on Twitter:

Two weeks ago, it was discovered Pelosi attempted to ensure a Hyde Amendment loophole was included in an earlier coronavirus economic stimulus proposal. The Hyde Amendment is a longstanding provision applied to spending bills that states taxpayer monies will not be used to fund abortions. Pelosi, Planned Parenthood, and other members of the abortion lobby accused Republicans of holding up that emergency bill to promote their “anti-abortion agenda.” The Democrat leader herself criticized Republican leaders, stating “families have needs,” and that a decision was needed “to help families right now.”

ZURICH (Reuters) - Food giant Nestle (NESN.S) told employees to prepare for difficult times ahead and make all the necessary efforts to supply customers with the food and beverages they need, Chief Executive Mark Schneider said in a memorandum seen by Reuters.

“This is the moment for extra effort, for going the extra mile,” Schneider said in a message to staff, distributed internally on Friday.

“Please get ready for the storm to hit – because hit it will,” Schneider added.

Known for packaged products like Maggi soups, KitKat chocolate bars and Nescafe instant coffee, Nestle has over 290,000 employees around the world.

It banned international travel for business purposes at the end of February and said it had taken additional safety measures in factories, offices and distribution centers.

In his message, Schneider addressed frontline employees and factory workers in particular, saying their commitment and discipline were critical to maintain business continuity.

He said it was important to secure supplies, manufacturing and logistics and, in areas not yet affected, build inventories of critical supplies and products.

March 23 (UPI) - For the first time in history on Wall Street, there wasn't any waving or shouting or bustling among traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at the opening bell Monday.

Instead, things were mostly quiet as stockbrokers began their first day of electronic trading.

As a result of the global coronavirus outbreak, the exchange decided to end physical trading on the floor - an activity that usually involves large gatherings there. Traders and managers will begin working remotely until further notice.

The closure affects two main areas in New York City and one in Northern California - the equities trading floor and American Options trading floor in Manhattan, and the Arca Options trading floor in San Francisco.

US Treasury secretary announces $4 trillion liquidity for the Federal Reserve

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has announced that the Federal Reserve will be allowed to leverage up to $4 trillion of liquidity to support the country’s economy amid a worsening coronavirus crisis.

Mnuchin said on Sunday that the coronavirus economic relief bill being finalized in Congress will also include a one-time $3,000 payment for families.

Under one component of the plan a "significant package working with the Federal Reserve will have up to $4 trillion of liquidity that we can use to support the economy," Mnuchin told "Fox News Sunday."

He said the additional liquidity measures for the Federal Reserve aims to help a broad base of American businesses to get through next 90 to 120 days.

The United States is enduring its own fast-growing coronavirus crisis that has seen businesses shut down en masse, workers laid off overnight, schools close and millions of people adjusting to life confined to their homes.

Major states in the United States are implementing stay-at-home directives as the coronavirus death toll nationwide has surged past 300.

There are now over 26,000 confirmed cases in the US and the disease has, so far, killed more than 326 people.

US officials were first saying that the coronavirus stimulus package being negotiated by the US Senate would be worth around $1.3 trillion or $1.4 trillion.

I was going to post about this the other day. A story about a guy in Colorado who was sick, fever and got tested for a couple of different Flu's. Then he got a note from doctor to get a test at drive though.

UN set to create global coronavirus fund

Oslo - The United Nations will create a fund to prevent the spread of coronavirus and support the treatment of patients worldwide, Norway said on Monday.

The purpose of the fund is to assist developing countries with weak health systems in addressing the crisis as well as to tackle the long-term consequences. The United Nations could make a formal announcement this week, the ministry said.

Norway, which suggested the fund, has not committed how much money it would put into the initiative, similar to a 2014 United Nations Ebola Response Fund.

"We want to make sure that the efforts are as unified as possible and as early as possible so that we can answer up to the demands that countries will have, especially the poorest countries," Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide told Reuters.

Almost 340 000 people have been infected by the novel coronavirus across the world and more than 14,500 have died, with deaths in Italy surpassing the toll in China, where the outbreak began, according to a Reuters tally.

In Africa, Angola, Eritrea and Uganda have confirmed their first cases, while Mauritius recorded its first death as the virus spreads across the continent despite efforts by governments to hold it back.

Every year, over four million people in Europe are affected by infections contracted during health-care procedures, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Many of these are bacterial infections which develop around medical devices and implants within the body, such as catheters, hip and knee prostheses or dental implants. In worst cases implants need to be removed.

Bacterial infections like this can cause great suffering for patients, and cost healthcare services huge amounts of time and money. Additionally, large amounts of antibiotics are currently used to treat and prevent such infections, costing more money, and accelerating the development of antibiotic resistance.

"The purpose of our research is to develop antibacterial surfaces which can reduce the number of infections and subsequent need for antibiotics, and to which bacteria cannot develop resistance. We have now shown that tailored surfaces formed of a mixture of polyethylene and graphite nanoplatelets can kill 99.99 per cent of bacteria which try to attach to the surface," says Santosh Pandit, postdoctoral researcher in the research group of Professor Ivan Mijakovic at the Division of Systems Biology, Department of Biology and Biotechnology, Chalmers University of Technology.

Infections on implants are caused by bacteria that travel around in the body in fluids such as blood, in search of a surface to attach to. When they land on a suitable surface, they start to multiply and form a biofilm - a bacterial coating.

Previous studies from the Chalmers researchers showed how vertical flakes of graphene, placed on the surface of an implant, could form a protective coating, making it impossible for bacteria to attach - like spikes on buildings designed to prevent birds from nesting. The graphene flakes damage the cell membrane, killing the bacteria. But producing these graphene flakes is expensive, and currently not feasible for large-scale production.

"But now, we have achieved the same outstanding antibacterial effects, but using relatively inexpensive graphite nanoplatelets, mixed with a very versatile polymer. The polymer, or plastic, is not inherently compatible with the graphite nanoplatelets, but with standard plastic manufacturing techniques, we succeeded in tailoring the microstructure of the material, with rather high filler loadings, to achieve the desired effect. And now it has great potential for a number of biomedical applications," says Roland Kádár, Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers.

The nanoplatelets on the surface of the implants prevent bacterial infection but, crucially, without damaging healthy human cells. Human cells are around 25 times larger than bacteria, so while the graphite nanoplatelets slice apart and kill bacteria, they barely scratch a human cell.

"In addition to reducing patients' suffering and the need for antibiotics, implants like these could lead to less requirement for subsequent work, since they could remain in the body for much longer than those used today," says Santosh Pandit. "Our research could also contribute to reducing the enormous costs that such infections cause health care services worldwide."

In the study, the researchers experimented with different concentrations of graphite nanoplatelets and the plastic material. A composition of around 15-20 per cent graphite nanoplatelets had the greatest antibacterial effect - providing that the morphology is highly structured.

"As in the previous study, the decisive factor is orienting and distributing the graphite nanoplatelets correctly. They have to be very precisely ordered to achieve maximum effect," says Roland Kádár.

Coronavirus: 23 killed in violent Colombia prison riots

Bogota - A prison riot in Colombia's capital Bogota late on Saturday left 23 prisoners dead and 83 injured, the justice minister said on Sunday, as detainees protested sanitary conditions amid the global outbreak of coronavirus.

Thirty-two injured prisoners are hospitalized, Justice Minister Margarita Cabello said in a video, while seven prison guards were also injured. Two guards are in critical condition.

The Andean country will enter a nationwide lockdown meant to stem infections from Tuesday night. So far 231 people have been confirmed infected with the disease and two have died.

"Today is a very sad and painful day," Cabello said. "Last night there was a mass criminal escape attempt at the El Modelo prison and riots in various detention centers around the country."

Graphic cell phones videos were posted to social media late on Saturday showing what appeared to be the inside of the prisons. Some showed small fires, others injured prisoners and guards.

His concerns have been partially confirmed as he is currently facing court hearings that will decide whether Washington will have the chance to prosecute him for leaking classified data online.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s lawyers will apply for bail over fears that prisons could become new hotbeds for COVID-19 infections, a statement from the "Don't Extradite Assange Campaign" said. According to the statement, the lawyers will emphasise that Assange is vulnerable to possible coronavirus infection.

"Prisons are considered epicentres for the spread of COVID-19 due to overcrowding and the propensity of the virus to spread in closed environments. Andrea Albutt, the President of the Prison Governors Association, has warned that 'there will be deaths' in UK prisons" the statement warned.
