Harvard University President Lawrence Bacow and his wife, Adele Fleet Bacow, have tested positive for the coronavirus, he announced Tuesday.

The news comes just two weeks after the university shuttered classes and ordered students to leave campus. Days ago, it postponed commencement.

"Earlier today, Adele and I learned that we tested positive for COVID-19," Bacow wrote. "We started experiencing symptoms on Sunday — first coughs then fevers, chills, and muscle aches — and contacted our doctors on Monday."

The first coronavirus case on Harvard's campus was confirmed on March 13. A second "presumptive positive case" was discovered three days later.

The couple began social distancing on March 14, according to the letter.

For once, an herbal remedy actually works. Why are malaria experts against it?

ENTEBBE, Uganda—It’s a little after 9 a.m. on the Wagagai Flower Farm, and Robert Watsusi pedals a bicycle laden with two 3-gallon jugs of a hot, bitter black tea. As he rounds a corner, workers emerge from football field–size growing houses to imbibe their weekly dose of the elixir they say keeps them free from malaria. “When I see people taking it, I feel happy,” says Watsusi. “It is very good for everyone.”

The tea comes from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua), the Chinese plant that is a source for the world’s most powerful anti-malarial treatments, which combine artemisinin derivatives with an older class of drugs. It can also be grown in wetter parts of Africa, and a year’s supply costs no more than a few dollars. Although the tea itself has traditionally been used in treatment, not prevention, in China, a randomized controlled trial on this farm showed that workers who drank it regularly reduced their risk of suffering from multiple episodes of malaria by one-third. For a group of people who were once waylaid by this mosquito-borne disease four or more times per year, the tea is a godsend.

Which is why you may be surprised to learn that the World Health Organization and a majority of malaria researchers are adamantly opposed to it. To be fair, there are compelling reasons not to endorse an herbal tea in a fight against a potentially deadly disease. After all, conventional single-molecule drugs are honed through chemistry to be safer, more specific, and more effective than their herbal progenitors. More critically, malaria experts worry that unregulated use of this tea could cause the malaria parasite to develop resistance to artemisinin drugs.

But the tea’s mere existence and its rapid spread challenges the view that conventional pharmaceuticals are the best and only way of managing Africa’s health care problems. After all, experts in the international aid world talk a lot about sustainability, and nothing is more sustainable than a drug grown on a shrub.

Of all the illnesses that have afflicted humanity over millennia, few have left their mark quite like malaria, which infects 200 million people each year and kills at least 655,000, most of whom are children. Falciparum malaria—the most common type in sub-Saharan Africa—starts as a debilitating fever, which can progress in severe cases to convulsions, brain damage, and death. In this part of the world, it’s almost impossible to stay completely free of the parasites for long. Adults often display a low level of immunity, which makes each subsequent infection painful and unpleasant but usually not fatal.

The story of artemisinin demonstrates that even the best malaria drugs are worthless if they are not getting to the people who need them. In the late 1990s, African malaria parasites had become resistant to standard treatments such as chloroquine, and malaria deaths in Uganda doubled in a decade. By the early 2000s, there was a proven alternative: artemisinin combination therapies. Nevertheless, the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria repeatedly rejected countries’ requests for money for ACTs, funding failing treatments over ACTs at a rate of 10-to-1. In 2004, a group of fed-up scientists writing in the Lancet called these decisions “medical malpractice.” Today, although ACTs are heavily subsidized by the international aid community, local clinics frequently run out of stock, and Africans often end up with substandard, ineffective, and sometimes counterfeit medications.

Long before ACTs were available in Uganda, rumors of Artemisia’s powers began to spread. In 1998, a German organization called Action for Natural Medicine (Anamed) began distributing seeds and cuttings from Artemisia, including a potent hybrid called A3, in 75 different countries.

One day in the town of Masaka, I met an enthusiastic Ugandan woman named Rehema Namyalo, who founded the local Anamed outpost and makes her living advising her neighbors and selling herbal treatments. After giving a tour of her medicinal garden, she unfurled colorful, handmade posters. One read, “Making A3 Leaf Tea for Malaria Treatment for Adult of Weight 50kg+.” Another illustrates the proper spacing for Artemisia plants in a field.

‘Digital dollar’ proposal stripped from latest Congressional coronavirus stimulus bill

A review of the latest version of House Democrats' coronavirus economic stimulus bill shows that language around a proposed "digital dollar" has been removed.

As The Block reported on Monday, a version of the bill circulating this weekend included the noteworthy proposal, which would have – if passed – created a system of digital dollar wallets maintained and operated by Federal Reserve system banks. The purpose: to serve as the infrastructure for delivering stimulus payments to American consumers as they weather the economic storm triggered by the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

A separate bill, previously advanced by members of the House Financial Services Committee, still includes the digital dollar provision.

Yet as The Block noted yesterday, the digital dollar proposal wasn't guaranteed to survive the political back-and-forth around the bill. A source with knowledge of the process on Capitol Hill had pointed to the problem of setting up such a system from the ground up.

The sprawling Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act, which now weighs in at more than 1,400 pages, makes no reference to the digital dollar. The payout method has also been significantly altered, appearing to take the form of an advance tax refund via the Treasury Department.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, gun sales across the country have been skyrocketing, with firearm shops everywhere from San Diego, where one shop owner said he was seeing sales “ten times higher” than normal, to New Jersey, where sales across the state have more than tripled, reporting major upticks in the purchasing of both guns and ammunition. Gun shops have been allowed to remain open during the lockdowns, apparently deemed an "essential function."

However, for Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, the situation has got out of hand.

Speaking to FOX 11 LA, Villanueva feared the wave of people purchasing their first guns in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak could be a recipe for disaster. “We will be closing them, they are not an essential function,” Villanueva said.

“I’m a supporter of the 2nd amendment, I’m a gun owner myself, but now you have the mixture of people that are not formerly gun owners and you have a lot more people at home. And anytime you introduce a firearm in a home, from what I understand from CDC studies, it increases fourfold the chance that someone is gonna get shot.”

Villanueva has some serious swing as he is also the Director of Emergency Operations, meaning he is the number one person in charge during a crisis like the coronavirus. All FEMA requests go through him, and all National Guard requests go through him.

NYPD says over 200 members have tested positive for coronavirus

New York's coronavirus outbreak has also impacted the city's police force, with more than 200 NYPD employees testing positive for the virus, the police commissioner said Tuesday. Commissioner Dermot Shea said that 211 NYPD members have tested positive for the virus, including 177 uniformed officers and 34 civilian employees, local station WCBS reported. As Iran battles one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the world, its regime has rejected life-saving humanitarian aid from abroad.

On Sunday, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the leading international medical humanitarian organization, announced that it had sent a 50-bed inflatable hospital and an emergency team of nine people to Isfahan, the second-worst affected province in Iran, “to increase hospital capacity for treating patients critically ill from coronavirus disease, also known as COVID-19.”

Furthermore, on Monday, the Iranian Embassy in France boldly tweeted that a “second shipment of MSF aid has left Bordeaux for Tehran today.”

Bill Gates rebuked proposals, floated over the last two days by leaders like Donald Trump, to reopen the global economy despite the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, saying that this approach would be “very irresponsible.”

Gates did not mention Trump by name, but the American president has said that he may decide to relax some of the country’s “social distancing” in order to jumpstart the country’s shut-down economy. Gates, the country’s leading philanthropist, has been among the most active tech leaders in using his resources to try and contain the virus.

“There really is no middle ground, and it’s very tough to say to people, ‘Hey, keep going to restaurants, go buy new houses, ignore that pile of bodies over in the corner. We want you to keep spending because there’s maybe a politician who thinks GDP growth is all that counts,’” Gates said in an interview with TED Tuesday. “It’s very irresponsible for somebody to suggest that we can have the best of both worlds.”

Trump has suggested that this middle ground would indeed be possible — by letting some healthy people return to work, for instance, while keeping more vulnerable workers in their homes. Experts have said that drastic and widespread social distancing is required to keep the pandemic from spreading further. Trump has said he would make a decision at the end of the month but has said that he believes the “cure” could be worse than the “problem itself.”

Asked what he would do if he were president, Gates returned to his concerns about reopening the economy.

“The economic effect of this is really dramatic. Nothing like this has ever happened to the economy in our lifetimes,” Gates said. “But bringing the economy back ... that’s more of a reversible thing than bringing people back to life. So we’re going to take the pain in the economic dimension — huge pain — in order to minimize the pain in the diseases-and-death dimension.”

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has put up $100 million for programs to fund testing and science around the pandemic, and he has begun using his public profile, too, to shape the coronavirus conversation. This month, Gates himself resigned from the board of Microsoft, which he founded, and is now effectively a full-time philanthropist — and the country’s most famous one.

And Gates has tried to cast himself as an optimist. He has said that the social distancing measures might need to last as little as six weeks, but said that “we have no choice,” despite the economic impacts.

The Federal Reserve on Tuesday asked BlackRock Inc. to steer tens of billions of dollars in bond purchases, a reflection of the influence of the world’s largest money manager.

BlackRock will purchase agency commercial mortgage-backed securities secured by multifamily-home mortgages on behalf of the New York Federal Reserve. The Fed will determine which securities guaranteed by Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae are suitable for purchase. BlackRock will execute the trades.

BlackRock also will manage two large bond-buying programs. It will be in charge of a Fed-backed facility to buy new investment-grade bonds from U.S. companies.

The firm also will oversee another vehicle for buying already-issued investment-grade bonds. Bond purchases will be the focus of that effort. But the firm has latitude to buy U.S. investment grade bond ETFs—including exchange-traded funds of its own. BlackRock is the largest provider of bond ETFs.

The mandate is expected to be significant. The Treasury Department is expected to inject $10 billion in initial equity funding in connection with each of the two facilities, according to a previous Fed statement.

The tasks place BlackRock in a potentially controversial position of implementing the administration’s response to the spreading coronavirus pandemic. The firm’s roughly $7-trillion reach extends into everything from equities to bonds to private equity. The firm will face significant scrutiny on how it prevents conflicts of interests.

BlackRock will be working with the Fed through its financial markets advisory business, and not its asset-management arm. That financial markets unit advises governments on how to manage their balance sheets, assisting them in the purchase of investments and the unwinding of toxic instruments.

For the program that involves ETF purchases, BlackRock can’t invest in more than 20% in any one ETF.

Exchange-traded funds that mirror broad swaths of the market can sometimes be a more politically palatable way of pumping money into the fixed-income market than investing in individual securities. It doesn’t require a manager to actively pick winners and losers, but simply track an index.

BlackRock will use Aladdin, a software system that assesses risks and prices investments, to monitor the assets. Aladdin watches over more than $20 trillion in assets.

BlackRock Chief Executive Laurence Fink is no stranger to turning his Rolodex and Aladdin into a powerful role for his firm in times of crisis. In the last financial crisis, the U.S. government tapped BlackRock to oversee assets once owned by Bear Stearns Cos. and American International Group Inc. after the two financial institutions collapsed.

That mandate put scrutiny on the firm, generated billions of dollars to the U.S. government and became a milestone that sealed BlackRock’s influence in Washington.

Mr. Fink, in a recent market briefing to some clients, said the firm was working with regulators to ensure the smooth functioning of markets. He has told clients the current situation doesn’t rise to the magnitude of a financial crisis, but it does mark a crisis of confidence that can be addressed with the help of prudent fiscal policy.

The US will see a turning point in the battle to contain coronavirus sooner than expected, according to the Nobel laureate who correctly predicted when China would get through the worst of its crisis.

“What we need is to control the panic … we’re going to be fine,” assured Levitt, who correctly predicted early on that China would get through the worst of the outbreak by mid-February.

His optimistic report on China said the country would peak with around 80,000 cases and 3,250 deaths. He was not far off: China has reported 81,588 cases with 3,281 deaths as of March 24.

Now Levitt is looking at 78 countries that have reported more than 50 new infections each day.

He said he focuses on new cases — as opposed to overall totals — and sees “signs of recovery” in each of the places.

“Numbers are still noisy, but there are clear signs of slowed growth,” Levitt said, without offering a concrete date for when the US may see its turning point.

The US has confirmed more than 46,000 cases, resulting in at least 593 deaths as of Tuesday afternoon, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.

Levitt acknowledged that not all cases have been detected in some countries, but their death tolls are on track with his findings, the outlet reported.

Though fatality rates are higher than the flu, Levitt said the pandemic is “not the end of the world,” according to the outlet.

“The real situation is not as nearly as terrible as they make it out to be,” Levitt told the newspaper.

DHS Warns 'Violent Extremists' May Exploit COVID-19 to Carry Out Attacks Against US - Report

The US is currently third in the number of those infected with the COVID-19 virus, after China and Italy, with more than 53,000 cases confirmed, according to the most recent data.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reportedly sent a memo to law enforcement officials warning that terrorists may take advantage of public fears over the COVID-19 pandemic by carrying out attacks against the US, according to ABC News.

Despite not having any concrete data on a specific plan of attack, the DHS said it has observed certain "extremist groups" that may attempt to spread misinformation about the deadly disease.

"Violent extremists probably are seeking to exploit public fears associated with the spread of COVID-19 to incite violence, intimidate targets and promote their ideologies, and we assess these efforts will intensify in the coming months," the intelligence bulletin reads, cited by ABC News.

Prior to the memo, FBI director Chris Wray in a video message declared that agents would "stay here, to protect [the public], no matter what".

"Because our criminal and national security adversaries sure aren't going to take a day off, whether that's for the coronavirus or, for that matter, anything else", Wray said.

The DHS bulletin listed extremist activities including a recent Daesh* call for supporters to attack overburdened health care systems in different countries, allegedly released in a recent Daesh newsletter.

Earlier, Reuters reported that the World Health Organization had been targeted in a cyber attack carried out by hackers looking to capitalize on international concern over the COVID-19 pandemic. Globally, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases is approaching 418,000 with at least 18,615 dead, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

The new language was added under Trade, Transportation, & Utilities, in the subsection Sporting Goods, Hobby, Book, & Music Stores.

It says:

Firearms dealers may operate physical businesses on a limited basis to complete only the portions of a sale/transfer that must be conducted in-person under the law, subject to the following restrictions: 1) all such sale/transfers will be conducted by individual appointment during limited hours only so as to minimize social interactions and congregating of persons; 2) the dealer will comply with social distancing, sanitization of applicable area between appointments, and other mitigation measures to protect its employees and the public.

The Second Amendment Foundation’s (SAF) Alan Gottlieb commented on Wolf’s decision to revisit his list of closed businesses and allow gun stores to remain open, saying, “The Governor was right to reverse himself. This is a huge win.”

On March 24, 2020, Breitbart News reported SAF filed a lawsuit against New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy (D) for requiring the closure of gun stores via his statewide shutdown order. They have more suits planned to fight mandated gun store closures around the country.

Residents of the French department of Aisne are heading for a truly harsh coronavirus lockdown, as local authorities have imposed a blanket ban on alcohol sales. The move is for their own good, officials argue.

Announcing the decision on Tuesday, Prefect of the department Ziad Khoury pointed out that alcohol abuse often goes hand in hand with domestic violence - which, many fear, is bound to surge under the lockdown.

“Excessive consumption of alcohol is likely to create increased disturbances and violence, especially within the family"

Khoury also banned shops from working past 8pm – indeed, if you cannot fetch a cold one, why bother going for groceries at night? While the decision affects only take-out sales of the booze, all the bars and restaurants have been already shut down which effectively makes Aisne a dry department.

Despite the prefect’s efforts to portray the ban as beneficial for the residents, some have made it clear they were not looking forward to the weeks of abstinence. Netizens flocked to the official's Twitter en mass, arguing that the ban will cause more harm, than good - all while giving rise to black markets.

“Incompetence or dictatorial will? The measure will only have negative effects: black market, withdrawal effects, bottlenecks in hospitals, etc. A curfew would prevent gatherings. You deprive people of their liberties and endanger the population,” one wrote.

Making the lockdown intolerable for alcohol addicts, who will effectively be forced into a sudden withdrawl that can entail serious health complications is incomppasionate at best, and dangerous, some noted.

"You can't suddenly deprive an alcohol addict of alcohol, it's dangerous!" a commenter wrote.

“It's a shame you put people in danger and will add more trouble for caregivers! Reverse this decision as soon as possible!” another chimed in.

Some went as far as to suggest that the prefect, who is of Lebanese origin, mulls imposing the “sharia law” in the department, with the ban on the booze being just the first of many steps.

“Sharia law on the move!” a witty netizen wrote, poking fun at the name of Emmanuel Macron’s En Marche! (“Forward!”) ruling party.

The ban will be in force at least until March 31, when the 15-day nationwide lockdown is set to expire. However, the French government has already hinted that the measure is likely to be extended beyond this date.

White House preparing to promote malaria drugs on online platform to combat coronavirus: report

The White House is reportedly planning to promote the use of two malaria drugs frequently touted by President Trump as a potential treatment for coronavirus despite their unproven benefits, using a platform built by the tech firm Oracle. The platform is slated to be used to collect information about off-label uses of the two drugs, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, the New York Times reported on Tuesday. Meanwhile, on Monday, an Arizona man died while his wife was hospitalized at Banner Health after they both ingested chloroquine phosphate, a substance often used to clean fish tanks, and which the woman told NBC News that she took the product after seeing Trump tout its effectiveness. “This is not going to be a magic pill for us to get us through this,” Daniel Brooks, a medical director with the Banner Poison and Drug Information Center, said Monday. The author of the letter, which does not identify him or herself, urges three senior Communist Party officials – Premier Li Keqiang, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Wang Yang, and Vice President Wang Qishan – to convene a special Politburo meeting to discuss “Xi’s issues.” A copy of the letter highlighted by Asia Times notes that Xi’s failure to contain the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak adds renewed urgency to a discussion on his exacerbating tensions with the United States, failing to run basic government operations like functional schools and hospitals, and pouring money into “backward nations” in Africa.

China's President Feeling The Pressure From Dissent in Own Party

President Xi Jinping is under growing political pressure from within the ranks of the ruling Chinese Communist Party over his handling of the coronavirus crisis.

An open letter circulating online since last week calls for an emergency, expanded meeting of the Politburo to discuss "Xi's issues" and to decide if he should step down from his leadership of party, government and military.

The letter says Xi's handling of the coronavirus epidemic should be discussed, but also the trade war with the U.S. and his fueling of mistrust of China in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The letter was shared to WeChat by Chen Ping, founder of Hong Kong-based broadcaster SunTV, according to Deutsche Welle and Radio Taiwan International.

Chen wrote in a WeChat post: "I saw it in a WeChat group, and I felt that it was moderate and rational, so I reposted it."

"But I don't know who wrote it," he said. "A lot of other people reposted this anonymous letter online."

Former Tsinghua University politics lecturer Wu Qiang said the letter comes soon after the disappearance and presumed detention of social media star and property tycoon Ren Zhiqiang.

Ren is currently incommunicado, believed detained, after an article critical of the government's response to the emergence of the coronavirus in Wuhan appeared online.

Health authorities in China are reporting no new infections in the central city of Wuhan where the COVID-19 epidemic first emerged, but local residents have said they fear there could be a resurgence of new cases amid an ongoing official cover-up.

HR 5717: Killing Off America’s Gun Culture In One Generation

Hank “Tippy” Johnson [D-GA, sadly], noted loon and midget/giant cage match fan, has filed HR 5717 the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020 in the US House. It has everything a violence-enabling victim disarmament advocate could possibly want: national gun owner licensing, an “assault weapon” ban, a suppressor ban, ex parte “red flag” confiscations, and more.

But the kicker is this section on owner licensing.

I wrote about this bill back in January, when Senator Fauxcahontas Warren (Squaw-MA) filed a Senate companion bill, S. 3254. GovTrack now gives it a 24% chance of being enacted, so let’s take another look.

Ҥ 932. License to own firearms and ammunition

“(a) In general.—Except otherwise provided in this section, it shall be unlawful for any individual who is not licensed under this section to knowingly purchase, acquire, or possess a firearm or ammunition.

“(b) Eligibility.—An individual shall be eligible to receive a license under this section if the individual—

“(1) has attained 21 years of age; and

“(2) has completed training in firearms safety, including—

“(A) a written test, to demonstrate knowledge of applicable firearms laws;

“(B) hands-on testing, including firing testing, to demonstrate safe use of a firearm;

Did you spot it…the now all-too-common Catch-22?

To possess a firearm, you must be licensed. To become licensed, you must first possess a firearm, at least for “hands-on testing” and “firing testing.” But “testing” is not one of the exceptions “otherwise provided.”

Current gun owners would be allowed to keep their existing firearm unlicensed. But no one who is not currently (as of when the Attorney General begins issuing “Federal firearm owner’s licenses”) in possession of a firearm could get a license and lawfully possess a firearm ever again.

And there you have it…lawful civilian gun culture eradicated in a single generation.

One might dismiss this as a simple error by a man with some obvious mental issues, but he didn’t draft this on his own. And these impossible-to-comply-with provisions are becoming standard practice in gun people control bills.

And so it goes.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister Yo-jong is confidently giving orders to the Workers Party, according to sources on Tuesday.

She had already displayed her mastery of North Korea's crackpot diplomatic style in several intemperate statements in recent weeks.

The developments suggest that her powers have increased significantly.

"Kim Yo-jong's presence stands out, not least in the circulation of instructions issued in her name," a source said. "She takes care of all party business whenever Kim Jong-un is on a tour of the provinces."

Rumors are circulating in the North that Kim Yo-jong is in charge of everything except military affairs. Her official title is given as "first deputy director of the Central Committee" but does not say in which department.

The Los Angeles County sheriff said Tuesday gun shops are not essential businesses and ordered deputies to make sure they were closed during the coronavirus crisis - a move that was contradicted hours later when the county's top lawyer said the shops could be open.

Los Angeles, the nation’s largest county with 10 million residents, enacted a stay-at-home order last week that required all nonessential businesses to close to slow the spread of the virus.

The county order - and an executive order from Gov. Gavin Newsom - did not specifically mention gun shops, prompting the Los Angeles County counsel's office to issue a statement late Tuesday saying it has “opined that gun stores qualify as essential businesses.”

It was not immediately clear what the conflicting guidance meant for gun stores.

Guns Direct in Burbank closed following the sheriff's instructions, but reopened Tuesday afternoon after Burbank police told them the store was considered an essential business, FOXLA reported.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said earlier that a “loophole” had allowed gun shops to stay open, and many attracted long lines of customers. Villanueva said the order was meant to keep open gun and ammunition businesses that support police departments and other security organizations.

The stay-at-home order is not a license “for everyone to be panic gun-buying or rushing to stores, which is now what we're seeing," Villanueva said.

He said gun shops have complied and deputies have not had to issue any citations. The county's stay-at-home order was crafted by the health department and Villanueva said he's working with the agency on new language.

FOXLA reported the sheriff's decision first on Monday.

County Counsel Mary Wickham could not immediately be reached Tuesday evening for more details on the opinion that the stores could remain open. The sheriff's department did not have further information on Villanueva's orders in light of the new information.

The sheriff's decision enraged Second Amendment advocates who said they planned to challenge it in court. The sheriff also said deputies would close strip clubs and nightclubs if they were open in the violation of the order.

Sam Paredes, executive director of Gun Owners of California, said his organization is looking at legal action to overturn Villanueva's decision.

“There are far more important things that the sheriff can be doing than sending uniformed officers to gun stores telling them they’re going to be shut down by force,” Paredes said. “We’ve got lots of stories from people who said, ‘I’d never thought I’d own a firearm, and now I want them more than anything in the world.'"

In Northern California, a gun shop called Solar Tactical had initially refused to close despite an order to do so in Alameda County, sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelley said Thursday.

“We’ll start out nice,” Kelley said. “Then we’ll post a notice to close and then we will take enforcement.”

The gun shop posted on Facebook a day later that it had closed. Calls to the store were not answered Tuesday.

Chuck Michel, an attorney for the National Rifle Association-affiliated California Rifle and Pistol Association, said the organization is trying to work with local authorities in California to keep gun stores open.

“They don’t just sell guns - they sell camping gear, survival gear, things that people may need,” he said. “Gun stores have been deemed to be essential in many, many jurisdictions, but unfortunately some of these jurisdictions are allowing politics to creep in.”

The FBI reported a slight decline in the number of firearms background checks from California in February, before the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic, from 96,567 in January to 95,430 last month.

The state Department of Justice, which does background checks and regulates sales of firearms and ammunition, said it doesn’t have updated statistics for March that can be publicly shared.

Nationally, orders deeming gun shops to be essential or nonessential vary.

In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Wolf quietly allowed gun shops to reopen on a limited basis during the coronavirus pandemic after several justices of the state Supreme Court urged him to do so. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court had narrowly dismissed a gun shop's lawsuit that challenged Wolf’s authority to shutter businesses deemed “non-life-sustaining.”

In New Jersey, Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order does not explicitly list gun dealers. But the state's online service that processes background checks is not taking more requests and its website says licensed firearms dealers are not essential. A federal lawsuit has been filed challenging the order.

MyPillow, the Minnesota manufacturer of specialty pillows, linens, and other household products, said that it is answering the call for more face masks as the country continues to deal with the global coronavirus pandemic. The company announced Tuesday on Twitter that it is making face masks for hospitals across the country. MyPillow joins a growing list of private companies pitching in to address the shortage of face masks that U.S. healthcare professionals are facing as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to climb.

It remains unclear what kind of face mask MyPillow is making. Healthcare professionals are asking for the N95 respirator mask, which are in short supply around the country. The N95 face mask provides a more snug fit than other kinds of surgical masks, providing better protection from airborne pathogens. A MyPillow spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Companies including 3M and Honeywell are set to manufacture millions of additional N95 respirator masks to protect doctors, nurses and other health care workers who are treating patients with coronavirus. From the time the treasonous nafta was signed and manufacturing and jobs were shipped to China and away from America and Canada, China raised over half a billion people into the "middle class" and most of this was done since the late '80s. Average minimum order straight from the factory at 50,000 pieces for less than 50 bucks US and the large companies - owned by the same people that own the companies that make the cell phones - buy a couple hundred thousand - on paper, pay roughly 25 bucks a piece - on paper - and then sell them in America for a thousand bucks and at least 20% higher in Canada in real "debt." It's the same with hundreds of products: athletic shoes that sell for hundreds of USD are bought and sold the same way. Many foreign-controlled factories in China will allow, under contract, the China factory to make a knock-off of a famous athletic shoe: same design, same material, same technology, same factory, same workers, same everything...sells in the States for at least a thousand bucks but can't have the same name so it sells in China for a hundred bucks USD for two months and then the sales start.

nafta was a giant treasonous ripoff that allowed hundreds of millions of people in China to be raised from poverty to a more advanced level culturally, scientifically, socially. China now has more luxury cars per capita than anywhere else...because they can afford them. Beijing streets, for example, are filled with exotics. Cars like mercedes, porsche, lexus...they're "everyday" and nothing special at all; something to run to the grocery store in or pick up the kids from school but nothing special; Lambo's, Ferrari's, Bentley's - crap, there are so many Bentley's in large Chinese cities they are beginning to lose their cachet - but the parking spaces out front of 5-star hotels in all large cities are filled with exotics!

Bill Gates rebuked proposals, floated over the last two days by leaders like Donald Trump, to reopen the global economy despite the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak, saying that this approach would be “very irresponsible.”

Gates did not mention Trump by name, but the American president has said that he may decide to relax some of the country’s “social distancing” in order to jumpstart the country’s shut-down economy. Gates, the country’s leading philanthropist, has been among the most active tech leaders in using his resources to try and contain the virus.

“There really is no middle ground, and it’s very tough to say to people, ‘Hey, keep going to restaurants, go buy new houses, ignore that pile of bodies over in the corner. We want you to keep spending because there’s maybe a politician who thinks GDP growth is all that counts,’” Gates said in an interview with TED Tuesday. “It’s very irresponsible for somebody to suggest that we can have the best of both worlds.”

Trump has suggested that this middle ground would indeed be possible — by letting some healthy people return to work, for instance, while keeping more vulnerable workers in their homes. Experts have said that drastic and widespread social distancing is required to keep the pandemic from spreading further. Trump has said he would make a decision at the end of the month but has said that he believes the “cure” could be worse than the “problem itself.”

Asked what he would do if he were president, Gates returned to his concerns about reopening the economy.

“The economic effect of this is really dramatic. Delivery fag here. I deliver to hospitals every day and the amount of traffic I would expect to cone through the place given the hype from the fake media does not line up at all.

There is no protocol for delivery drivers, no changes at all.

On Sunday, the ADL shared a bailout petition asking their followers to join them in pressuring congress for “$60 billion in emergency stimulus funding” for themselves and over 200 other non-profits.

The list of non-profits seeking a bailout includes other [jewish supremacist] groups like Agudath Israel of America, Haddassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America and the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.

“Today, Congress is negotiating a legislative package in response to the health and economic crisis related to COVID-19,” the ADL’s petition says. “ADL has added its voice to a letter (link here) signed by a coalition of over 200 national non-profits urging legislators to include $60 billion in emergency stimulus funding to support our work and our employees, and keep 12 million people employed across the country. This federal relief is critical to ensuring that non-profit organizations continue our work during this time of crisis and need.”

The ADL’s latest 2018 financial report revealed they have over $92 million in net assets."

This chutzpah is a bad look for the ADL, but then again, everything the ADL does seems bad for their image, but that’s never stopped them from plowing forward in their apparent quest to be the most reviled, hypocritical and feared advocacy group in the world, as was revealed in the 2009 documentary film Defamation.

Like the Southern Poverty Law Center, the ADL receives virtually endless funding from its deep-pocketed jewish supporters all across America, including from the radical Hollywood elite.

Besides petitioning the government for money it apparently doesn’t really need, the ADL is continually badgering every member of Congress and the Senate to pass draconian legislation making it illegal to criticize Jews or Israel under the guise of ‘anti-hate’ laws.

Anyone who opposes their agenda of jewish supremacy, anti-White neo-bolshevism, and pro-Zionism will be predictably smeared as an ‘antisemite‘.

And now the ADL apparently expects the American taxpayers to subsidize their self-serving nation-wrecking agenda.

New Delhi (Sputnik): Preliminary reports suggest that two suicide bombers entered the Sikh temple in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, and started to fire indiscriminately. Eyewitness also confirmed a massive explosion inside the house of worship.

Narender Singh Khalsa, a member of the Afghan parliament, says that three to four people had been killed in the clash, while nearly 150 people are trapped inside the Dharamshala, a Sikh area of worship, in the Shorbazar neighbourhood of Kabul, where suicide bombers entered on Wednesday morning.

Afghan security forces have reached the site and a gunfight is underway, said Tariq Arian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Interior. Tolo News reported that the incident began at around 7:45 a.m. local time.

The whole page is about a cocktail/recipe that she’s using to alleviate pain. She even mentions being in pain in the video.

I don’t know if “Proof” is a secret comm to someone. If this letter was faxed or a picture taken of it and texted or emailed.

Boy, 17, with coronavirus dies as cases surge in California

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles County health officials backtracked Tuesday on their announcement that a child died from coronavirus, saying it’s possible the death was caused by something else.

During their daily briefing, the county health department said the unidentified child from the city of Lancaster was among four new deaths.

Hours later, after Gov. Gavin Newsom had cited the death of the teenager as evidence the virus can strike anyone, the county issued a new statement.

“Though early tests indicated a positive result for COVID-19, the case is complex and there may be an alternate explanation for this fatality" and the case will need evaluation by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the statement said.

Lancsaster Mayor R. Rex Parris said a 17-year-old boy had been hospitalized with respiratory problems and died from septic shock, a reaction to a widespread infection that can cause dangerously low blood pressure and organ failure.

Parris said the boy’s father also has coronavirus and worked in a job where he had close contact with the public.

The mayor said the boy may have had long-term health problems in the past but was healthy recently. He said he doesn't doubt that the teen died from complications of COVID-19.

“We’re the first city in the nation to lose a child and that is unbearable to me,” he said.

A report last week by the CDC found no coronavirus deaths in the U.S. among people 19 and under. That age group accounted for less than 3% of all hospitalizations.

As with many other communities, Lancaster, a Mojave Desert city of 170,000 north of Los Angeles, has been struggling to find tests and protective gear to deal with the virus. Parris said the city has ordered 100,000 test kits from Europe.

Meanwhile, Newsom and others took issue with President Donald Trump's announcement Tuesday that he wants the United States “opened up and just raring to go by Easter” — some two weeks away and far sooner than medical experts expect the fast-spreading outbreak will begin to diminish.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said on Wednesday it would extend its prior conditional regulatory relief from disclosure requirements for public companies affected by the china virus.

Judge rules lawsuit alleging Trump threatened free press can move forward

A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that some of the claims in a literary advocacy group's lawsuit against President Trump over his threats to retaliate against critical media coverage can proceed.

U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield wrote in a 24-page opinion that PEN America had a "constitutional standing" to pursue claims for declaratory relief against Trump's practice of "selectively barring access" to the White House press corps, including by "revoking or threatening to revoke press credentials due to hostility to the reporters’ speech."

Schofield also ruled that the case could proceed on allegations that Trump revoked or threatened to revoke security clearances for government officials he dislikes.

The court granted Trump's motion to dismiss claims that he initiated government actions against certain media companies, threatened to revoke broadcast licenses and interfered in White House press access.

Schofield noted that PEN America's claims against Trump had merit, given that the White House has history with barring press access and that it revoked CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta's credentials in November 2018. Acosta's press pass was later reinstated, though the development caused former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to release new guidelines for reporters.

“The press secretary indeed e-mailed the entire press corps to inform them of new rules of conduct and to warn of further consequences, citing the incident involving Mr. Acosta,” Schofield noted. “These facts plausibly allege that a motivation for defendant’s actions is controlling and punishing speech he dislikes.”

Acosta's credentials were temporarily stripped after a contentious exchange with the president at a press conference. A federal judge granted CNN's request to restore the pass, ruling that Acosta and his employer were likely to succeed in arguments that their Fifth Amendment rights to due process were violated by the White House.

PEN America filed a lawsuit in 2018 against Trump in an attempt to gain an order declaring that Trump's threats violated the First Amendment. The group also sought an injunction to block Trump from taking actions against journalists he doesn't like.

Schofield wrote on Tuesday that "issuing an injunction to the president would impede his discretionary authority in these realms, and more generally, risk improper judicial encroachment on the executive branch."

The case will now move into the discovery phase, and PEN America will be allowed to obtain documents from the government to help substantiate its claims, the group said.

“PEN America is profoundly grateful for the court’s timely decision," the group's president, Jennifer Egan, said in a statement. "Though we filed our lawsuit more than a year ago, the Trump administration’s punitive stance toward the press has continued unabated, with corrosive results for truth, fact, our democracy, and—most recently—public health."

FBI’s coronavirus ‘fitness app’ slammed as a way to extract personal info

The FBI is helping gym rats looking to stay in shape during the coronavirus lockdown by promoting a fitness app — but it requires users to provide their GPS coordinates.

The law enforcement agency urged people in a Monday tweet to “download the FBI’s Physical Fitness Test app to learn proper form for exercises you can do at home like pushups and situps.” The catch is that the FBI FitTest created in 2018 uses the “phone’s GPS and accelerometer,” which the FBI claims provides the user a “more realistic PFT experience.”

The digital workout tool has been slammed on social media as a sneaky way for the government to extract personal info amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“DO NOT — AND WE CANNOT STRESS THIS NEXT PART ENOUGH — DOWNLOAD THIS APP,” tweeted Fight for the Future yesterday. “I’ll pass on this one,” seconded a Twitter user.

Another distrustful user snarked: “Looking to get ripped while ceding your location data to the FBI? Boy, do we have the app for you.”

Despite the flurry of suspicious social-media posts, the FBI maintains that it “does not collect personal user data from this app; the information remains stored on the device in accordance with FBI.gov’s privacy policy.”

On Friday, New York governor Andrew Cuomo ordered New York City to be placed on lockdown, forcing nonessential businesses like gyms to shutter as the city becomes a global COVID-19 epicenter. Many have since been using the internet as a resource for at-home fitness tips and turning to apps for wellness.

While not the bureau’s official fitness test, the FBI fit-test app promises users the opportunity to “train like an agent” by engaging in a variety of equipment-less exercises, including situps, pushups, a 300-meter sprint and a 1.5-mile run.

“Whether you are at the gym, on the track, at home, or on the run, you can use the FBI Physical Fitness Test app anywhere,” reads the description on the FBI website. The mobile application — available on Google Play, Apple’s App Store and the bureau’s site — also features video workout tutorials to ensure that home fitness buffs are practicing proper techniques.

App users can choose between “practice” and “test mode,” which can determine how they’d fare on the official fitness exam by simulating test conditions. Agency standards stipulate that to achieve a maximum score of 50, male applicants need to complete at least 58 situps in a minute, perform 71 pushups in an unlimited amount of time, run 300 meters in 40.9 seconds or less, run 1.5 miles in eight minutes and 59 seconds or less and do 20 pullups or more in an unlimited amount of time. However, prospective agents only need 12 cumulative points to pass, according to the scoring chart.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has a new daily ritual now that the pandemic has put the kibosh on the signature campaign rallies that helped him get elected four years ago: the coronavirus briefing.

Standing on the once-abandoned White House briefing room stage flanked by public health experts, Trump holds court with reporters and directly addresses the American people, providing updates on his administration’s efforts to combat the pandemic and trying to demonstrate that he’s in charge.

The updates are far more staid than his raucous rallies and lack the adoring crowds and “Lock her up!” chants of the political gatherings. But they include many of the same features as his now-on-ice mass rallies: plenty of self-congratulation and airing of grievances, press bashing, tirades against his critics and an ample dose of misleading information.

That, combined with measured updates from public health officials, has created a sometimes confusing split screen for Americans watching at home, many under stay-at-home restrictions and anxiously tuning in to cable news for updates.

“I don’t want to stand here for two hours and do this,” Trump told reporters during Monday’s marathon briefing, which stretched to nearly two hours. “But I think it’s important. ... Give us any question about it because I think it’s important for the public to know.”
