Federal Reserve announces the establishment of temporary U.S. dollar liquidity arrangements with other central banks

The Federal Reserve on Thursday announced the establishment of temporary U.S. dollar liquidity arrangements (swap lines) with the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Banco Central do Brasil, the Danmarks Nationalbank (Denmark), the Bank of Korea, the Banco de Mexico, the Norges Bank (Norway), the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and the Sveriges Riksbank (Sweden). These facilities, like those already established between the Federal Reserve and other central banks, are designed to help lessen strains in global U.S. dollar funding markets, thereby mitigating the effects of these strains on the supply of credit to households and businesses, both domestically and abroad.

These new facilities will support the provision of U.S. dollar liquidity in amounts up to $60 billion each for the Reserve Bank of Australia, the Banco Central do Brasil, the Bank of Korea, the Banco de Mexico, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and the Sveriges Riksbank and $30 billion each for the Danmarks Nationalbank, the Norges Bank, and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. These U.S. dollar liquidity arrangements will be in place for at least six months.

The Federal Reserve also has standing U.S. dollar liquidity swap lines with the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, and the Swiss National Bank.

Fed Boosts Daily QE By 66% Overnight To Record $75 Billion In One Day

Overnight saw the addition of yet another four-letter-acronym bailout fund from The Fed but signals from the market suggest that they are once again losing control of the dollar-shortage-driven liquidity crisis as the FRA-OIS spread has started to rise sharply once again. So, what does The Fed decide to do?

Simple - increase its daily QE buying of bonds by 66%, buying a record $75 billion of US Treasury bonds each of today and tomorrow. The bank had initially planned to purchase $50b of Treasuries on those days.

The buying is spread across 7 operations as listed below:

-9:40 – 10:00 am: Treasury Coupons 7 to 20 year sector, for around $6 billion

-10:30 – 10:50 am: Treasury Coupons 4.5 to 7 year sector, for around $11 billion

-11:20 – 11:40 am: Treasury Coupons 2.25 to 4.5 year sector, for around $17 billion

-12:10 – 12:30 pm: Treasury Coupons 0 to 2.25 year sector, for around $25 billion

-1:00 – 1:20 pm: Treasury Coupons 20 to 30 year sector, for around $9 billion

-1:50 – 2:10 pm: TIPS 1 to 7.5 year sector (Thursday)/TIPS 7.5 to 30 year sector (Friday), for around $7 billion

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday called on President Trump to use the emergency war powers he invoked just a day earlier to immediately press U.S. industry to accelerate the production of medical supplies to fight the coronavirus.

Pelosi is warning that any delay would be a mistake, urging the president to tap those powers "immediately" in order to "mass produce and coordinate distribution of these critical supplies, before the need worsens and the shortages become even more dire."

"There is not a day to lose. We must put more testing, more protective equipment and more ventilators into the hands of our front-line workers immediately,” she said.

Quinine is an alkaloid derived from the bark of the cinchona tree. Remijia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. Within the family, it is a member of the subfamily Cinchonoideae and the tribe Cinchoneae.

There are about 36 species in Remijia.[1] They are native to Peru and Brazil. Some of the species have hollow stems that harbor ants.[2]

The bark of Remijia contains 0.5%–2% of quinine, a chemical substance often used as a medicinal drug and flavour additive in alcoholic beverages. It is cheaper than the bark of Cinchona, another source of quinine. Because of its intense flavor, the bark of Remijia is used in making tonic water.[3]

No type species has ever been designated for Remijia. In 2005, two species were transferred from Remijia to a new genus, Ciliosemina.[4]

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is accused the Chinese Communist Party of failing to cooperate and be helpful in the wake of the global coronavirus pandemic.

“Instead of trying to do the work to suppress the virus, which is what the world demanded, the Chinese Communist Party didn’t get it right and put countless live at risk as a result of that,” Pompeo said Wednesday night on the FOX News Channel's "Hannity" show.

“They haven’t been sufficiently transparent. And the risk you find [is] if we don’t get this right … this could be something that is repeatable,” he also said. "Transparency matters.”

There are still several hundred Americans stranded in countries that have imposed strict rules on moving about freely.

“The United States is sparing no effort to protect our people and contain the global #coronavirus pandemic," Pompeo said Monday. "Beijing must acknowledge its role and be part of the solution.”

Critics of how China has addressed the outbreak that started in that country in late-2019 say U.S. medical experts' offer to help in China at the beginning of the viral spread was an attempt to limit the global transparency of the situation.

Hospital groups file lawsuit to stop Trump price transparency rule

The rule, which was finished last month, is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to increase price transparency and to develop more competition within the health care industry, moves which they say would help lower medical costs.

White House officials have said that a lack of cooperation from hospitals on the regulation indicates they are prioritizing themselves over consumers.

“Hospitals should be ashamed that they aren’t willing to provide American patients the cost of a service before they purchase it," HHS spokeswoman Caitlin Oakley said. "President Trump and Secretary Azar are committed to providing patients the information they need to make their own informed health care decisions and will continue to fight for transparency in America’s health care system.”

The hospitals say the rule will have the opposite of the intended effect and cause competitors to increase prices to match their rivals to a point where consumers will decide against receiving care.

The Association of American Medical Colleges, the Children’s Hospital Association and the Federation of American Hospitals also signed onto the suit.

India & Russia plan to open new trade route via Iran despite threat of US sanctions

Opening a long-pending multi-modal transportation corridor via Iran will be a big boost for bilateral trade between Russia and India, but it’s not just the economy at stake. This is a bold move against the threat of US sanctions.

India’s state-owned Container Corporation of India (Concor) and Russian Railways Logistics Joint Stock Company (RZD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to transport cargo between India and Russia – based on a single invoice – via the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200-km multi-modal transportation network project cutting right across Central Asia, starting in Iran and ending in Astrakhan, Russia.

“Within three months, traders from India and Russia could move goods between the two countries through Iran,” Concor chairman V Kalyana Rama said last week.

The INSTC is a trilateral project jointly initiated by Russia, Iran and India in 2002. In order to operationalize a new strategic transit route bypassing Pakistan, India connected it to the Iranian port of Chabahar and built a new route connecting four major cities in Afghanistan by the end of 2016.

In October 2017, in a “pathbreaking” move, India shipped a consignment of wheat from Port Kandla in Gujarat to Afghanistan, via Chabahar.

The US was keen to promote an alternative route to Afghanistan bypassing Pakistan, so India was accorded a waiver for the Chabahar project from the US sanctions against Iran. This all changed suddenly following the unexpected killing of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani by the US in January, and the imposition of fresh sanctions by the Trump administration against any entity dealing with Iran, particularly in the construction sector. At the time, it seemed unlikely that the INSTC would ever be operationalized without an official waiver from Washington.

Overcoming US sanctions

The sudden signing of the Russian-Indian MoU, just weeks after President Donald Trump’s historic visit to India, suggests that the US may have given just such a waiver for India – or perhaps that deepening Indo-US strategic ties may have emboldened New Delhi to move forward in activating the INSTC to connect with Russia through Iran.

In any case, trade via the INSTC will benefit exporters and importers in both India and Russia by lowering transit time and cost of transportation compared to the existing route via the Suez Canal. It will also cut down the shipping time sharply, to 25-28 days from the current 40 or so.

London Underground Shuts 40 Stations over Coronavirus

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that up to 40 stations on the London Underground will be closed to curtail travel in an effort to halt the spread of coronavirus.

The night tube and bus services will also be reduced in the capital, where it is spreading faster than in any other part of the country. Other public transport services will also be on limited services, including the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), TfL Rail, London Overground, and the south London Tram network.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson had asked Britons to self-isolate and work from home if possible. However, one key worker commuting on the Underground told the BBC that it seemed “a lot busier” on the Tubes than earlier in the week, saying: “It didn’t feel like people were staying at home.”

There have been 900 confirmed cases of the China-origin virus in London, with fatalities in the capital reaching 34. The virus’s spread in the city is weeks ahead of other parts of the country, and on Wednesday night, Prime Minister Johnson would not rule out enforcing a curfew on Londoners, putting the city into lockdown.

The government is preparing to pass emergency legislation on coronavirus which includes increasing police powers to detain those suspected of having the virus who refuse testing or isolation, as well as the power to shut down venues for public safety.

Recent reports have suggested that London could go into lockdown by this weekend. One source close to London Mayor Sadiq Khan told The Telegraph in a report published on Wednesday: “We expect a shutdown of London, but nobody in central Government is saying when that will be or what form it will take.”

Mr Johnson is set to chair another meeting of the national emergency COBRA meeting on Thursday to discuss proposals amidst concerns that people in London are not following the government’s advice, reports The Times. Such measures could include forcing pubs, cafes, and restaurants to close.

“This is not about arresting people on the street,” a government source told the newspaper of record. “This is about some simple measures to ensure that the current public health guidance is followed.”

On Thursday morning, however, a government spokesman told media that there is “zero prospect” of restrictions being put on travel in and out of London.

“There are no plans to close down the transport network in London and there is zero prospect of any restrictions being placed on travelling in and out of London,” the spokesman said.

Aside from TfL’s decision to shut some 40 stations, the government also said that it would not forcibly shut down London’s public transport system.

MOSCOW, March 19. /TASS/. Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin demanded that criminal proceedings be initiated against former US President Barack Obama, as well as a number of US congressmen, senators and officials because of the illegal prosecution of his Concord company and him personally.

The businessman’s letter to US Attorney General William Barr was published by the Concord Press Service on Thursday.

"By this letter, I demand that a criminal case be initiated against a group of individuals, including former US President Barack Obama, senior officials from the US Department of Justice, members of the US Congress and Senate, who, by entering into collision, taking illegal actions, falsifying documents and evidence managed to institute "the United States against Concord" criminal proceedings to defame Concord, me personally, and the Russian Federation," Prigozhin said in a letter.

In another letter addressed to Barr, the businessman demands that the case against Concord, which was terminated on Wednesday, be returned to the court.

According to him, the trial was terminated at the request of the prosecutor’s office because the prosecution fears "to present false evidence in open jury, on the basis of which a criminal case against Concord was framed and considered for more than two years."

Prigozhin demands either to continue the trial or remove charges from his company due to lack of guilt and corpus delicti.

Earlier the the businessman said that he was preparing a $50 billion lawsuit against the US authorities.

In February 2018, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted 13 Russian citizens and three law firms for interfering in the 2016 US presidential election. According to the prosecution, Prigozhin’s companies funded the St. Petersburg Internet Research Agency, which tried to support Donald Trump. On March 16, 2020, the Washington federal court upheld the prosecutor's motion to terminate the process. Russian authorities have repeatedly rejected allegations of attempts to influence the course of US elections.

Police in Ecuador have blockaded a major runway to stop foreign planes from landing after international flights were banned.

Hundreds of emergency service workers were parked on the strip at Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International airport - the second biggest in the country.

Guayaquil city mayor Cynthia Viteri reportedly ordered officers on to the tarmac to stop planes from Europe amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The move was understood to have been taken to stop an Iberia Airbus A340 travelling from Madrid and a KLM Boeing 777 from Amsterdam.

But local media claimed the planes landed in Quito with just crew members on-board.

They had reportedly been sent to Ecuador to pick up their citizens in the country to take them home.

Prosecutors are believed to be investigating the incident, with the Ministry of Transport and Public Works blasting the Guayaquil City Council for clamping down on air travel.

Up to 170 passengers reportedly boarded the KLM plane in Quito but it is unclear if the two flights have returned to Europe.

Mayor Viteri, who is part of the conservative Social Christian Party party, claimed responsibility for the incident.

She said she would do it again to protect the city from the arrival of people who may have caught coronavirus.

The politician claimed the planes had been about to land in the city and the crew members were scheduled to spend the night there before leaving the next day.

She said Guyauquil is bringing in strict restrictions on movement to prevent the spread of the coronavirus as the city is one of the worst-affected in the country.

Ecuador has suffered 168 confirmed cases of the virus and three deaths.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat who proposed his own stimulus plan, has expressed unhappiness that he is not involved in the initial drafting of the bill. “I have heard Leader McConnell has said he will sit down with our Democratic Senators to come up with a bipartisan package,” Schumer said Thursday. “That’s what we must do.”

Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, are not entirely left out of the negotiations. Both have been in regular contact with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, who is President Trump’s point person on the negotiations with Congress. Democrats want the plan to include protections for workers, especially in the airline industry, which lawmakers have faulted for engaging in stock buybacks in recent years.

President Trump said during his press conference he would not object to placing conditions on the airline bailout. Republican Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Susan Collins of Maine released a small business stimulus plan on Wednesday that involves providing forgivable loans to small businesses that have been closed due to government’s guidelines to avoid the spread of the virus. “This is straightforward,” McConnell said. “A rapid injection of cash to help small businesses through this turmoil. Not some brand-new program with a long lead time, but an existing program that’s been tested.”

Wing Commanders (and Civilian Equivalents),

Every one of you is dealing with the COVID-19 virus and the latest movement restrictions directed by Defense Secretary Mark Esper. Many of you will likely have an individual on your base or in your community who will test positive for the virus in the weeks ahead. In addition, you are dealing with daily closures of schools, child development centers and the challenge of staying connected with local community leaders, health agencies and state governance. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities and no situation presents a one-size-fits-all approach. You must tailor your response to fit your community situation. This is especially true in our Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve where Airmen and families are not co-located with a main operating base.

Commanding your wings when things are going well is a pleasure … but rarely remembered. Commanding during a crisis is an opportunity of a lifetime for you, your Chief and your Spouse (or volunteer lead spouse) to rise to the occasion and lead through the storm. This is a time that will be remembered by all. Having commanded during a number of similar crises, I wanted to offer a few thoughts for your consideration. They are not all inclusive nor are they a checklist. Take them as intended … advice from your CSAF, as you lead your wing with confidence, poise and purpose.

Success begins and ends with your Squadron Commander cadre. You and your Group Commanders must arm them with commander’s intent and information if your wing is to succeed. They must maintain 100% contact with the Airmen and families entrusted to your care. Information flow is key and you can only do so much. Arm them and support them and you will set the conditions to win. Try to do everything at your level and you will have someone fall through the cracks. Provide your commander’s intent and then step back as they execute.

Set proper expectations. Your Airmen and families will appreciate candor, not coddling. We don’t know when this will end. We don’t know a lot. Don’t make things up. Tell them what you do know and share what you don’t. Not your job to fix this. Your job is to lead.

This is when you make your money as a commander. The organization is going to ride on your calm, cool, collected and measured, while intense, approach to the crisis. If you are frazzled and all over the map, you are part of the problem. If you are the adult in the room that provides direction but empowers your subordinate leaders to take action, you win. Your wing will remember this time and how you responded for the remainder of your tour and beyond.

Your Vice can focus down and in, according to your stated commander’s intent. You need to be up and out with local community leaders, state leadership and health agencies. They are facing similar challenges. Where possible, you should build on the relationships already established to band together as one team. Our families live, work and play in the community. Now’s the time to work closely with Mayors, the Governor, and Inter-Agency teams to weather the storm. You are stronger together.

You must take care of yourself so you can take care of others. Doesn’t do us any good if you work 14 hour days and then catch the virus or go down for the count. Show the way by your strict adherence to the CDC ROE and demand your leadership team do the same. We’re in this for a few months, maybe longer … nobody knows. Get your personal OPTEMPO right so you can lead by example and have the physical and mental fitness to endure.

That’s enough for this APAN. We’ve established a website just for you with the most up-to-date information and shared lessons from your teammates. I highly encourage aggressive cross-talk across wings regardless of component or MAJCOM. Like you, I’ve never met a good idea I didn’t want to steal. Our CAT team has the stick here under the A3, Lt Gen Mark Kelly. Let’s keep the comm lines wide open.

This crisis affords you an unprecedented opportunity to show your wing what leadership in a crisis looks like. It is your command team (commander + senior NCO + volunteer lead spouse) taking charge and showing calm, steady, proactive leadership. It is you and your Group Commanders empowering your Squadron Commander cadre to take care of the Airmen and families entrusted to their care. We completely trust you and appreciate your leadership during this difficult time. COVID-19 is a worthy adversary. We must take it head on at every echelon of command.

Grady obtained a BS in nursing and biology at Georgetown University, a MSN from Boston College, and a PhD in philosophy from Georgetown University.[1] She has worked in nursing, clinical research and clinical care, and HIV.[1]

Career[edit]

Grady was a Commissioner on the United States President's Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues between 2010 and 2017.[1] She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a senior fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics, and a fellow of the Hastings Center as well as the American Academy of Nursing.[1]

Awards[edit]

Grady received the National Institutes of Health (NIH) CEO Award in 2017 and the Director's Award from the same organization in the years 2015 and 2017.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Grady is married to Anthony S. Fauci, an American immunologist and head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the NIH.[2][3]

Christine Grady is a nurse-bioethicist and a senior investigator who currently serves as the Chief of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. Her research is both conceptual and empirical and primarily in the ethics of clinical research, including informed consent, vulnerability, study design, recruitment, and international research ethics, as well as ethical issues faced by nurses and other health care providers.

Dr. Grady has authored more than 175 papers in the biomedical and bioethics literature and authored or edited several books, including The Oxford Textbook of Clinical Research Ethics. She served from 2010-2017 as a Commissioner on the President's Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues. She is an elected fellow of the Hastings Center and of the American Academy of Nursing, a senior research fellow at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine. She serves as an attending on the Bioethics Consultation service, an IRB and DSMB member, and a member of several editorial boards. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake occurred at 17:53 local time, with the epicentre located at a depth of 2 kilometres.

A 5.0-magnitude quake struck Turkey's Elazig province, the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Department (AFAD) reported.

The epicentre of the quake, which happened about 6 pm local time, was registered at a depth of 2 km, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said.

No injuries or damage have been reported so far.

In late January, the province was hit by a strong 6.8-magnitude quake, which claimed the lives of 44 people and left dozens more injured.

A number of Turkish provinces, including Elazig, are located in seismically active regions.

Missouri Man Sentenced to 19 Years for Attempting to Provide Material Support to ISIS

Hester pleaded guilty on Sept. 24, 2019, to attempting to provide material support to ISIS from October 2016 to Feb. 17, 2017, knowing that it was a designated foreign terrorist organization that engages in terrorist activity. Hester actively attempted to plot a mass casualty attack with others that he believed were acting on behalf of ISIS. Hester drew the attention of law enforcement through advocating violence on social media, and when contacted by undercover officers, he immediately showed that he wanted action in addition to words. Law enforcement engaged Hester to see if he was truly committed to an act of terrorism, and his responses left no doubt that he was.

Hester, who has been in federal custody since his arrest in February 2017, is a U.S. citizen. He was enlisted in the U.S. Army for less than a year, receiving a general discharge from service in mid-2013.

According to the plea agreement, multiple confidential sources reported to the FBI that Hester had posted a variety of material on multiple social media accounts. Hester indicated that he had converted to Islam, expressed animus toward the United States, and posted photos of weapons and the ISIS flag, among other material, suggesting an adherence to radical Islamic ideology and a propensity for violence. In order to assess whether Hester posed a security threat, the FBI undertook a series of investigative steps, beginning with an examination of whether and to what extent Hester would engage directly online with confidential sources working for the FBI and, later, with FBI employees working in an undercover capacity.

FBI employees using undercover identities communicated with Hester via social media, texting and personal meetings on several occasions. In those conversations, Hester said, for example, that the U.S. government should be “overthrown,” and he suggested “hitting” the government “hard,” while noting that it would not be “a one man job.” Hester identified categories of potential targets for attack, including “oil production,” “military bases,” “federal places,” “government officials,” and “Wall Street.” Hester specified that “[a]ny government building in DC would get attention of everyone.” He said he wanted a “global jihad.” Citing his brief enlistment in the U.S. Army, Hester also claimed proficiency with “assault weapons” and said that his favorite firearm was the AK-47 rifle. Hester spoke about the perceived ease in which one could gain access to a military base.

Long Island Woman Sentenced to 13 Years’ Imprisonment for Providing Material Support to ISIS

Earlier today, in federal court in Central Islip, Zoobia Shahnaz was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Joanna Seybert for providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically more than $150,000 to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), and attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS. Shahnaz pleaded guilty in November 2018.

John C. Demers, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, William F. Sweeney, Jr., Assistant Director-in-Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI), and Dermot F. Shea, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD), announced the sentence.

As set forth in court filings and facts presented at the sentencing hearing, between March 2017 and July 2017, Shahnaz defrauded numerous financial institutions to obtain money for ISIS, including a loan for approximately $22,500. Shahnaz also fraudulently obtained more than a dozen credit cards and used them to purchase approximately $62,000 in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies online. Shahnaz then made multiple wire transfers totaling more than $150,000 to individuals and entities in Pakistan, China and Turkey that were fronts for ISIS.

Shahnaz accessed ISIS violent jihad-related websites and message boards, and social media and messaging pages of known ISIS recruiters, facilitators and financiers. She also performed numerous internet searches for information that would facilitate her entry into Syria. Court-authorized search warrants executed at Shahnaz’s residence on Long Island resulted in the seizure of terrorist and jihad-related propaganda, including a photograph of a suicide belt of explosives and a night vision scope.

On July 31, 2017, Shahnaz was arrested at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York, while attempting to board a flight with a layover in Istanbul, Turkey – a common point of entry for individuals travelling from western countries to join ISIS in Syria.

Border Patrol Arrests Smuggler With 42 Illegals, Most Crammed In 12×6 Utility Trailer

CALEXICO, Calif. – El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro station arrested a man suspected of smuggling 42 illegal immigrants, which most were dangerously packed in a towed utility trailer Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m., when agents observed a man driving a Ford F-250 with an enclosed utility trailer in tow. The vehicle was traveling away from a location that is known for human and narcotic smuggling.

Border Patrol agents conducted a vehicle stop and questioned the driver as to his citizenship. The driver stated that he was a Mexican citizen and indicated to the agents that there were people inside the trailer.

Border Patrol agents inspected the vehicle and trailer, which revealed 42 undocumented immigrants, 38 of which were in the trailer. The individuals inside the trailer were without food, water, ventilation or safety restraints. Additionally, the trailer was locked from the outside leaving the individuals with no way of exiting in case of an emergency. The trailer measured 12 feet by 6 feet, forcing the 38 individuals, two being juveniles, to cram together with no room for movement.

The FBI is already slow-rolling the release of Spygate docs requested by conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch.

Judicial Watch has filed countless FOIA lawsuits against the FBI requesting communications between FBI lovers Lisa Page and Peter Strzok.

“The FBI has been slow rolling the release of Page-Strzok communications and is still hiding all their infamous text messages,” Fitton said last summer after the FBI said it would take over two years to produce the requested documents.

The FBI is only producing 500 pages of documents a month (out of 20,000 pages) on Lisa Page and Peter Strzok which Tom Fitton said is “absolutely absurd.”

The watchdog group has also sued for documents related to Spygate involving fired FBI Director James Comey and his partner-in-crime Andrew McCabe.

NEW YORK - Japanese drugmaker Takeda Pharmaceutical is aiming to roll out an antibody treatment for COVID-19 as early as this year, as it joins global big pharma's pledge to rise to the occasion amid a global pandemic. "We believe that within nine to 18 months we could have a product that has real potential to treat the most critically ill patients," Rajeev Venkayya, president of Takeda's global vaccine business unit, said Thursday.

Takeda's experimental treatment - a concentration of antibodies taken from patients who have recovered from COVID-19 - is part of a concerted effort to search for effective treatment and vaccines against the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19 and has infected over 240,000 worldwide, killing nearly 10,000. More than 80 clinical trials are underway to test new and existing medicines, according to the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations.

Companies are developing medication targeting the coronavirus "at light speed," Venkayya said at a Thursday news briefing with IFPMA, which also featured executives from Eli Lilly, Roche, Sanofi Pasteur and Johnson & Johnson. The group issued a statement the same day, promising to "share tools and insights" to test potential therapies and vaccines, and to scale up diagnostics for testing.

The multinational drugmakers' efforts will be supported by an expedited regulatory process in the U.S. On Thursday, American President Donald Trump ordered the Food and Drug Administration to fast-track coronavirus drugs and vaccines to meet the pressing need.

DEA raids target large-scale drug trafficking ring across Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Federal agents dismantled a large-scale drug trafficking operation in Indianapolis on Thursday.

U.S. Attorney Josh J. Minkler announced federal criminal charges against 35 people for their alleged role in two separate drug trafficking rings.

Starting around 6 a.m., federal agents and local officers served arrest warrants and search warrants at 19 locations in the Indianapolis area, looking for alleged drug dealers after an investigation that authorities said was six months in the making. The U.S. Department of Justice said 31 individuals were arrested and are in custody but four remain as fugitives.

During the course of the investigation, authorities say approximately 30 firearms, $70,000 in U.S. currency and 22 pounds of methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl were seized.

According to the two indictments, Danielle Dowling and Christopher Tate led separate drug trafficking organizations that operated in Indianapolis and distributed large amounts of methamphetamine as well as heroin and fentanyl.

Assistant Special Agent in Charge Michael Gannon is assigned to the Indianapolis District Office for the DEA.

“For all the drug traffickers out there, we're going to do what we always do. We're going to put our resources together and hold them accountable for peddling poison in our streets and preying on people that have substance abuse issues,” said Gannon.

Large scale raids by the feds are nothing new around Indianapolis. In 2017, a series of drug busts helped topple drug kingpin Richard Grundy III.

Just last year, 22 people were arrested as part of a drug trafficking ring in Haughville dubbed Operation Garage Band.

Yet all the cases have one thing in common.

“You know drug traffickers are in business for one reason, to make money. They don't care whose family they ruin, and we're going to put them where they belong, in jail,” said Gannon.

Gannon claims numerous drugs, including meth, heroin and fentanyl, were targeted in this week’s raids.

He added that the fight against narcotics doesn't stop because of the coronavirus outbreak.

“Our job is to go out and dismantle violent drug trafficking organizations, and together with our partners, we're going to always do that,” said Gannon.

In addition to the DEA, multiple agencies were involved this morning, including IMPD and United States Attorney’s Office.

During their conversation I could determine two specific member locations - Long Beach port, and Laurel Canyon. Their job is to assess eyes on specific details of an emergency, and report those specifics across the radio network, not provide social or political commentary. Because of the current state of emergency, they are gathering daily on air at a specific time during the day to check in (roll call), and share what they determine is relevant information.

It's a no nonsense group, that during a big "happening," they will likely be among those sharing actual information as it unfolds. Until the military instructs them to go silent, of course. Until then, I will be tuning in to glean as much information as I can. Trying to find this information anywhere on commercial radio is non-existent.

Included in this video of L.A. wide radio chatter from yesterday, 3-18-20, they discuss where the best information can be found on social media, and specifically where it is not found. Conspiracy theories are not their forte. It's not their job. That means no BS during a time of real world emergency with lives on the line.
