Germany shuts its borders as coronavirus paralyses public life

Germany closed its borders with France, Switzerland, Denmark, Luxembourg, and Austria on Monday morning for all traffic apart from commuters and goods vehicles to try and slow the rise in coronavirus cases and stop panic buying in border regions.

Poland and the Czech Republic have already shut their borders with Germany, meaning Europe’s largest economy is now all but sealed off from its neighbours.

Interior minister Horst Seehofer has not said how long the border closures will last.

Vice president of the Robert Koch Institute Lars Schaade said on Monday that it would be clear in about 10 to 12 days if all these measures to limit public movement and interactions will yield results.

As of Monday morning, Germany has more than 4,800 confirmed coronavirus cases and nine deaths.

Over the weekend, Berlin ordered the closure of club, pubs, cinemas, and any gatherings of more than 50 people. Shuttering the capitals’ nightlife is a blow for the economy. Lutz Leichsenring, spokesman for the Berlin Club Commission, said on Friday that “more than 9,000 employees, as well as a further 20,000 artists, are suddenly without employment - and the clubs without income. Many Berlin clubs have already filed for bankruptcy as a precaution, otherwise they run the risk of delaying bankruptcy.”

Schools and kindergartens will begin their shutdowns across Germany as of today.

The German government announced a massive fiscal aid package last week, to support companies during the virus crisis, including measures such as deferral of taxes, and “unlimited” credit to businesses to ensure their liquidity.

The government will initially make €20bn (£18bn, $22bn) available to the KfW state development bank, and approve a new law that enables the government to make it easier to put employees on reduced working hours.

Pope Francis establishes a new law for Vatican City State providing greater independence for the judiciary and simplifying judicial procedures.

Pope Francis on Monday, 16 March 2020, promulgated a new law regulating the judicial system of Vatican City State. The new norms replace the previous law, which was originally issued by Pope St John Paul II in 1987 and amended by Benedict XVI in 2008.

According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, the new law is intended to meet the requirements for greater efficiency required by the “current historical and institutional context”.

In particular, the new law provides for greater independence of judicial bodies and magistrates dependent on the Pope. It specifies the requirements for the appointment of judges and it simplifies the judicial system while increasing the staff of the court. Furthermore, it provides a head for the Office of the Promoter of Justice (prosecutor’s office), and sets out a standardized procedure for possible disciplinary action against certified advocates.

The Press Office statement explains that the new law comes in the wake of regulatory reforms at the Vatican with regard to economic/financial issues and criminal law. It is also a response to the Vatican City State’s accession to various international conventions. At the same time, the new laws preserve the unique nature of Vatican law, which recognizes the canonical system as the primary normative source of legislation, and the primary criterion for its interpretation.

Bishop Emmanuel Delmas of Angers tested positive for COVID-19 on the evening of March 15. The Diocese of Angers said in a statement March 16 that the bishop first experienced symptoms during his time in Rome.

Delmas was part of a delegation of 31 French bishops who met with Pope Francis during their ad limina visit on March 9. Vatican media shared photos of the bishops sitting one meter apart with a significant distance from the pope.

The pope’s audience with the French bishops lasted two and a half hours, according to a statement by the French bishops’ conference.

The Holy See Press Office has not responded to an inquiry from CNA asking if the French bishops greeted Pope Francis with a handshake after the meeting, as is customary during ad limina visits. The audience came one day after the Vatican confirmed it had implemented precautionary measures in coordination with Italian authorities, and the Diocese of Rome announced the suspension of all public Masses for three weeks.

Bishop Delmas’ coronavirus symptoms are said to be mild, and “his condition is currently not of concern,” the Angers diocese stated.

After learning of his diagnosis, Delmas, 65, asked for “all of the faithful to persevere in prayer.”

The bill was first introduced on March 9 and has already been referred to the Education Finance Division.

According to the bill, officially known as HF 4323, “a public library that hosts a drag queen story hour event shall have regional library system support aid from the Department of Education reduced by 100 percent,” starting next year.

NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. - Circling the desert southwest, an E-8C Joint STARS (JSTARS) aircraft provides all-weather radar to track potential threats for Green Flag ground forces Jan. 24 at the U.S. Army National Training Center on Fort Irwin, California.

The JSTARS surveillance system is constructed to locate, classify and track ground targets, making it a critical component in Green Flag exercises.

JSTARS, Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, is a battle management and command and control aircraft capable of airborne ground surveillance. Throughout the exercise, JSTARS use their radar system to gather intelligence for Air Force command centers and Army mobile ground stations through secure data links.

“We’re here to detect moving ground vehicles and report possible enemy movements to enhance the ground forces’ ability to plan attack operations,” said Easdale.

The integration between JSTARS and ground forces in Green Flag allows both sides to gain the experience needed to be confident under pressure in real wartime situations.

Spain & Portugal increase border controls to slow coronavirus spread

Portugal is suspending rail and air traffic to and from Spain for a month, while Madrid is denying entry to everyone bar residents and a few others on land borders, in a bid to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

The authorities in Lisbon said that the temporary halt to all air and rail traffic with Spain will go into effect at 2300 GMT on Monday and last through April 15. Portugal has just recorded its first death from the Covid-19 coronavirus, reportedly a 80-year-old man. There are fewer than 200 confirmed cases in the country as of Monday.

Spain has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with only China, Iran and Italy registering more cases. There have been just over 9,400 cases of covid-19 so far, with 309 confirmed fatalities.

As the deadly coronavirus continues to spread, Madrid has ordered a lockdown of its land borders, only allowing entry to Spanish nationals, residents, cross-border workers and people with justified emergencies, according to the country’s interior minister

Washington will act in “self-defense” in Iraq if its military comes under attack, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said. US bases in Iraq have been repeatedly shelled recently and several servicemen have been killed and injured.

Pompeo told Iraqi PM Adil Abd al-Mahdi that Baghdad “must defend Coalition personnel supporting the Iraqi government's efforts to defeat ISIS,” the US Department of State said in a statement on Monday.

Those “responsible for the attacks must be held accountable,” the official warned, adding that Washington “will not tolerate attacks and threats to American lives” and will take “action as necessary in self-defense.”

Over the past week the US Camp Taji base, located north of Iraq’s capital, came under rocket shelling twice. On Wednesday, three soldiers, two from the US and one from the UK, were killed at the installation, while a dozen others were injured. Iraqi military personnel were affected by the attack as well.

While no one claimed responsibility for the deadly shelling, Washington was quick to blame Iraqi Shia militias for it and launched “retaliatory” airstrikes on them. Since said militias are an integral part of the Iraqi military, the US basically bombed its own allies, killing at least six servicemen and wounding several more.

Despite the retaliation, Camp Taji came under rocket attack again on Saturday. A number of Iraqi and at least three US soldiers were injured in the shelling.

Back in January, the Iraqi parliament passed a non-binding resolution, urging all foreign militaries, including the US to withdraw from the country. The landmark decision came after the US assassinated Iranian top general Qassem Soleimani and deputy chief of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in a drone strike outside Baghdad. The US was quick to refuse withdrawal, yet its forces have been repeatedly attacked throughout the country since then.

As special advisor for the Wuhan Municipal Government, Daley was interviewed on April 7 and said that high-tech and educational resources would play a significant role in provincial development.

Wang Guosheng, governor of Hubei, gave a speech to introduce Daley. He said that Chicago and Wuhan hold much in common, such as plenty of lake resources and a large workforce.

Chicago and Wuhan have become sister cities to bring huge benefits for both. "It's an unprecedented opportunity" Wang said.

Daley spoke to the China Daily before his introduction ceremony and explained that most investors paid attention to high-tech and educational resources in Wuhan when they opened factories here.

Daley said, "high-tech and a high-qualified workforce would become two unparalleled advantages for Wuhan's development."

He also mentioned that the central provinces such as Hubei should accelerate the construction of its transportation infrastructure. "The cost of transportation is one of the most crucial factors in the eyes of investors", he said.

A convenient transportation system could reduce business costs. Wuhan should focus on airport construction and railway construction," he said.

"Wuhan is a city with hundreds of lakes which impressed me deeply," Daley said. He explained that to protect Chicago lakes, the local government implemented regulations to prohibit building any private dwellings along the lake area. "Apart from that, we also carried out some special projects to preserve our lakes," he added.

"As the special advisor of Wuhan, I promise that I will perform with my passion, energy and vision just like when I was the mayor of Chicago," Daley said.

The US Health and Human Services Department's computer system was reportedly hacked on Sunday night, with the National Security Council needing to step in and warn that news of a mass quarantine was fake news.

Three people "familiar with the matter" briefed Bloomberg on the hack and said the breach was meant to slow the department's system down in the middle of the coronavirus response. Though no major damage was done, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and President Donald Trump have been informed of the attack, which is said to have included several incidents. The National Security Council tweeted in response to the hack and the spread of disinformation due to it on Sunday night.

According to the report, HHS officials assume a "hostile foreign actor" was behind the attack, but there is no proof of that being the case.

As of Monday morning, there are 3,602 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the US, and at least 66 people have died from it.

Exports of weapons from the United States grew by 23 percent during the latest period, raising its share of total exports to 36 percent.

Russia was the world’s second-largest exporter with 21 percent of global arms deliveries, but Russian exports were 18 percent lower than in 2010-14.

A massive lawsuit representing over 1,000 children who were held and sexually abused in the Michigan corrections system was recently settled as state officials agreed to pay $80 million to the victims. Some European banks shut branches to limit coronavirus spread

Two of Germany’s largest banks have temporarily shut hundreds of branches, while Italian lenders have shortened opening hours as they grapple with staff shortages and the spread of coronavirus. Commerzbank (CBKG.DE) said it will close several hundred of its roughly 1,000 branches in Germany, with the exact number yet to be determined, while HVB said it plans to close 101 of its 337 branches during Monday.

The banks are hoping that increased use of digital banking will limit the disruption caused by restricted branch services, while in Britain, Spain and France, where most banks remain open, there have been calls on customers to go online.

Customers of HVB and Commerzbank will still be able to use ATMs, online services and those branches that remain open. Several German savings banks have already closed or are planning to close branches. Italy’s biggest retail bank Intesa San Paulo (ISP.MI) said its large branches, around 900 of a total of 3,500, are only opening in the morning while most of its smaller sites are operating three mornings a week.

Intesa said some 122 of its small branches located nearer large ones have closed. UniCredit, which has around 4,000 branches, said last week it would keep only a limited number open in each region.

Other Italian banks are following suit, with Banca Monte dei Paschi (BMPS.MI) also opening only in the morning.

Saudi detains 300 officials in ‘corruption probe’

Saudi authorities have detained 298 government employees, including military officers, and will indict them on crimes, according to anti-corruption body Nazaha.

According to an announcement published yesterday, the investigators will bring charges against those currently held in custody.

Nazaha tweeted that it had arrested and would indict 298 people on crimes such as bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power involving a total of 379 million riyals ($101 million).

Last week, two senior princes, Prince Ahmed Bin Abdulaziz, King Salman’s brother, and Prince Mohammed Bin Nayef, the former crown prince and interior minister, were detained in a corruption probe.

Both were considered potential rivals to Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and their arrests were seen as an effort to send a message to other members of the royal family that any signal of disloyalty towards Bin Salman would not be tolerated.

IMF Prepares $1 Trillion Bazooka

The IMF has just fired off a trillion-dollar "bazooka" of its own Monday morning.

In a blog post published minutes ago, IMF Director Kristalina Georgieva issued three "policy prescriptions" that she said should define a "coordinated response" from the developed economies in Europe and the US. In addition to declaring that the IMF has $1 trillion in loan capacity ready to put to work to salve the economic damage caused by the outbreak, Georgieva encouraged governments to spend more, and asked the Fed to consider bulking up its dollar FX swap lines to emerging-market central banks. She also noted that the $42 billion that investors have pulled from EM markets is one of the biggest outflows in history, and will certainly ratchet up financial stressors.

Today, the IMF published a set of policy recommendations that can help guide countries in the difficult days ahead.

What more needs to be done?

Three action areas for the global economy:

First, fiscal.

Additional fiscal stimulus will be necessary to prevent long-lasting economic damage.

Fiscal measures already announced are being deployed on a range of policies that immediately prioritize health spending and those in need. We know that comprehensive containment measures—combined with early monitoring—will slow the rate of infection and the spread of the virus.

Governments should continue and expand these efforts to reach the most-affected people and businesses—with policies including increased paid sick leave and targeted tax relief.

Beyond these positive individual country actions, as the virus spreads, the case for a coordinated and synchronized global fiscal stimulus is becoming stronger by the hour.

During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), for example, fiscal stimulus by the G20 amounted to about 2 percent of GDP, or over $900 billion in today’s money, in 2009 alone. So, there is a lot more work to do.

Second, monetary policy.

In advanced economies, central banks should continue to support demand and boost confidence by easing financial conditions and ensuring the flow of credit to the real economy. For example, the U.S. Federal Reserve just announced further interest rate cuts, asset purchases, forward guidance and a drop in reserve requirements.

Policy steps that we know have worked before—including during the GFC—are on the table. Yesterday, major central banks took decisive coordinated action on monetary easing and opening of swap lines to lessen global financial market stresses.

Going forward, there may be a need for swap lines to emerging market economies.

As the Institute for International Finance said last week, investors have removed nearly $42 billion from emerging markets since the beginning of the crisis. This is the largest outflow they have ever recorded.

So central banks’ policy action in emerging-market and developing economies will need to balance the especially difficult challenge of addressing capital flow reversals and commodity shocks. In times of crisis such as at present, foreign exchange interventions and capital flow management measures can usefully complement interest rate and other monetary policy actions.

Haftar’s Forces Deployed En Masse Around Tripoli

On March 15th, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) began to mobilize its forces towards Tripoli, reportedly for a heavy, and potentially final, offensive on Tripoli.

Videos and photographs of quite a bit of military vehicles were shared on social media.

It is not announced what specifically the operation would ensue, just that troops are being mobilized.

Meanwhile, the LNA air force carried out heavy air strikes and shelling on Government of National Accord (GNA) forces, as well as the Syrian militants deployed by Turkey in the area of Misrata.

The LNA spokesman, Brigadier General Ahmed al-Mismari, on March 15th, held a press conference.

Mesmari asserted that the Libyan Armed Forces agreed to the truce but would never accept threats by militias. The LNA spokesperson stated that Misrata militias attempts to attack the forces in Al Jufra and Sirte using advanced ammunition and drones supplied by Turkey.

The LNA spokesperson also disclosed an attempt by militias to target Al Jufra Airbase by a Turkish-made drone that was downed by the LNA southern Libya.

Mesmari stated that the Turkish spheres of influence in Libya are Misrata, Tripoli, and Zuwara saying that the LNA has spotted all the locations of Turkish troops in Libya.

The LNA spokesperson accused Turkey of transporting 300-400 mercenaries to Libya weekly by civilian aircrafts and ships that are protected by international laws. A number of those ships carry the flags of certain countries. For instance, a ship carrying mercenaries was raising the flag of Lebanon.

Mesmari declared that the number of Turkish officers on Libyan soil has reached 1,000 while that of mercenaries has recorded 7,500. Mesmari stated that the LNA struck Turkish targets in Mitiga International Airport.

Mesmari revealed that the LNA has 85,000 soldiers, and that 7,000 were martyred since the launching operation to capture Tripoli from the enemy was launched in April 2019. That is in addition to thousands of injuries.

On the side of the GNA, there appears to be infighting as a video purportedly showed factions within the GNA forces attack each other.

Denmark rushes through emergency coronavirus law

Denmark's parliament on Thursday night unanimously passed an emergency coronavirus law which gives health authorities powers to force testing, treatment and quarantine with the backing of the police.

The far-reaching new law will remain in force until March 2021, when it will expire under a sunset clause.

"I was touched when I saw the whole Parliament standing up and voting for this," Health Minister Magnus Heunicke told Danish state broadcaster DR after the law passed.

"It is time to put aside party politics and be together to do what it takes to bring Denmark safely through this situation."

Jens Elo Rytter, law professor at Copenhagen University, said the measures were unlike anything passed in the last 75 years "It is certainly the most extreme since the Second World War," he told the Jyllands-Posten newspaper. "There have been some powerful encroachments in various terror packages. But this goes further."

Trine Maria Ilsøe, DR's court correspondent, said that Danish citizens could face prosecution under the new law if they refused to comply with health authorities' demands. "It means that you could be sentenced to a punishment if you, for example, refuse to allow yourself to be tested for coronavirus," she said.

The Ministry of Health will now work with the Ministry of Justice on the details of how the police will work with health officials to enforce their demands.

It also empowers them to prohibit access to public institutions, supermarkets and shops, public and private nursing homes and hospitals, and also to impose restrictions on access to public transport.

Initially, the government wanted to the law to give the police the right to enter private homes without a court order if there is a suspicion of coronavirus infection. But this was dropped after opposition from parties in the parliament.

The parliamentary session was itself affected by the pandemic, with only 95 out of 179 MPs present for the vote, efforts made to ensure that MPs kept a safe distance from one another, and MPs voting by standing up.

Militants In Idlib Are Not Complying With The Ceasefire: Russian Foreign Ministry

Large armed groups of terrorists in Idlib, Syria, refuse to recognize the Russian-Turkish agreement, and were able to rearm with external support and take counter-offensive actions, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Information and Press Department said.

“In the de-escalation zone in Syrian Idlib, large armed groups of various Islamic groups are concentrated, including Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and Khurras al-Din, which continue to use the ideological principles and terrorist methods of Al- Qaeda.” The mentioned organizations, incidentally, refused to recognize the latest Russian-Turkish agreements on the introduction of a ceasefire regime in this region,” the Russian foreign ministry told Interfax.

The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that “in the ranks of the jihadists grouped there, there are many ISIS members, including those who were evacuated at one time along the “security corridors” from other regions of Syria.”

“The militants of the terrorist groups took advantage of the respite, recovered, reequipped, including thanks to outside support, and are now taking counter-offensive actions,” the Foreign Ministry underlined.

Meanwhile, sources close to the Syrian Arab Army reported that there was infighting between the Jihadist groups in Majdalya in Idlib, over letting Turkey patrol the M4 highway along with Russia.

U.S. Forces Close Closing Some Bases In Iraq Following Rocket Attacks On Camp Taji

The US-led coalition has opted to leave some of its smaller bases in Iraq following the recent series of rocket attacks on its forces. According to the US military, troops will be redeployed to larger facilities, and this will not affect the military mission in the country.

The official explanation claims that the reason is the ‘success’ in the fight against ISIS, but recent casualties from two attacks on Camp Taji seem to be a more realistic version.

“As a result of the success of Iraqi Security Forces in their fight against ISIS, the Coalition is re-positioning troops from a few smaller bases. These bases remain under Iraqi control and we will continue our advising partnership for the permanent defeat of Daesh from other Iraqi military bases,” the US-led coalition said.

“The Coalition remains in Iraq at the invitation of the Government of Iraq to defeat ISIS; since 2014, together, we have liberated more than 55,000 square kilometers and freed millions of Iraqi people from ISIS murderous rule. Our troops are re-positioning in coordination with the Government of Iraq. Due to operational security, we will not announce a specific timetable for the troop movements.”

A new Iraqi armed group, Ausbat al-Thaayirin, already claimed responsibility for the March 11 rocket attack that killed three US-led coalition personnel. The group said that the attacks were delivered in response to the US assassination of Deputy-Commander of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and Commander of the Iranian Quds Force Maj. Gen. Qassam Soleimani. It also vowed to continue military actions against US forces.

Coronavirus: Justin Trudeau Shutting Down Canadian Border to Foreign Travelers

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday announced that Canada is drastically restricting its borders as the country moves to prevent additional cases of the deadly coronavirus.

Addressing reporters in Ottawa, Trudeau said the country is shutting down its borders to non-citizens, with the exceptions of permanent residents, diplomats, aircrews, and U.S. citizens. The prime minister also said that airlines will prevent individuals from exhibiting coronavirus symptoms from entering an aircraft. “That means anyone who has symptoms will not be able to enter Canada,” he explained. Further, only four airports — Pearson International Airport, Vancouver International Airport, Montreal Trudeau Airport, and Calgary International Airport — will be allowed to receive international flights.

Trudeau also re-upped a federal recommendation that Canadians abroad return home. “If you are abroad it’s time to come back home,” the Canadian leader said. “If you have just arrived, you must self-isolate for 14 days.”

Trudeau was quarantined Thursday after his wife, Sophie Trudeau, tested positive for the coronavirus.

In an emailed statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said Justin Trudeau, 48, was in good health and was exhibiting no symptoms of the disease but will be isolated for 14 days as a precaution.

“The prime minister will continue to fully assume his duties and will address Canadians tomorrow,” it said. “… All orders of government will continue to work tirelessly and in close collaboration. Canada has a well-equipped public health system to deal with the spread of COVID-19.”

According to his office, doctors advised that he not be tested as he is not exhibiting symptoms and for the same reason there is no risk of infection to those he’s been in contact with.

Sophie Trudeau, 44, was tested earlier Thursday for COVID-19 and was placed in isolation with her husband as they awaited her test results, which came back positive, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

The FRBNY began the program(s) Outright QE and increases to the REPO amounts announded yesterday. All oversubscribed, with the first one having the largest % of subsmissions turned away. $40 B in Treasury's across the curve. Afer all of the below the funding markets are still locked up because the GC repo rate actually rose from 0.30% to 0.425%. Simply put, no matter how much the FRBNY tries it simply cannot soak up the massive amounts of paper debt in this system. The entire curve was lower but the short-end underperformed, flattening the yield curve. Index Volumes still elevated but lower than Friday and earlier ast week. Still not good on a double-digit down day. US Futures were halted limit-down overnight, and when cash markets opened, they were halted (down over 7%) before rallying all the way back up to the halted levels before slumping back... Losses accelerated into the close as the White House press conference began. Bank stocks were destroyed today after abandoning buyback plans. Credit markets suffered more carnage with IG spreads exploding higher and High Yield issues suffering moar blow-outs on spreads. This portends this part seizing up. The FRBNY simply cannot support the flood of shit here.

PG&E Wins Approval of $23 Billion Bankruptcy Financing Package

PG&E Corp. won bankruptcy court approval to use up to $23 billion in financing after California Governor Gavin Newsom dropped his opposition, clearing a crucial obstacle to the power company’s push to exit Chapter 11.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Dennis Montali said Monday he’ll approve a financing motion for $11 billion in debt commitments and $9 billion in new equity that will support PG&E’s turnaround plan. PG&E can also raise an additional $3 billion through new shares under the plan.

Montali called the approval another “major step” in the bankruptcy and complemented the governor’s office and others for working with PG&E to move the process forward. PG&E attorney Paul Zumbro said it’s especially critical given the fallout on Wall Street from the coronavirus.

The plunge in equity markets “underscores with three bright red lines the importance of having committed financing,” Zumbro said during the hearing. PG&E shares fell 12% Monday as the market at large plummeted.

The utility needs to win approval of its reorganization plan from the bankruptcy court and state regulators before a state deadline of June 30. That would allow the company to use a state wildfire fund to help cover the costs of possible future fire claims.

“It was important for the utility to get court approval of this motion,” said Negisa Balluku, bankruptcy litigation analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence. “It was probably the key motion for Newsom to object to if he had substantive concerns with PG&E’s post-emergence capital structure and debt load.”

The bankruptcy case is PG&E Corp. 19-bk-30088, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).

The short version of the attached vid was posted this morning. I've been trying to figure out if this is from a kook or is credible. I posted this long version during POTUS's presser so I thought I would post it again. I did get a comment from an anon

suggesting some nordic anon comments since they do saunas morning and night...got me thinking that a lot of cultures from norther latitudes use saunas...even native americans had

It is THEIR credentials which are the most important. If you find their collective determination that “coronavirus can be easily killed at 56° C (133° F.)” to be credible, then by raising your upper respiratory area to that temperature, you can kill the virus and end the infection. This is easily accomplished with a sauna or a blow-dryer. Performing a scientific literature search doesn’t require any academic credentials. A well-read janitor could just as easily have come to this conclusion.

If you reject the scientific research, and don’t believe viruses can be killed with heat, then all I can suggest is that you follow health authority’s guidelines by being sure to wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, cough into your sleeve and avoid those around you with obvious symptoms. Personally, I prefer adding the additional step of actually killing the virus, since it is so easy to do.

Before Trump implemented a travel ban on Iran, about 18 refugees were allowed to resettle in the U.S. over the month of February. Iran now has close to 15,000 coronavirus cases and 853 deaths.

About 175 refugees have been resettled in New York, 170 resettled in Texas, 140 resettled in Kentucky, 127 resettled in Ohio, 110 resettled in Michigan, and 92 resettled in Pennsylvania.

The constant flow of refugee resettlement comes as the U.S.-Mexico border continues to be inundated by foreign nationals from countries affected by the coronavirus. As Breitbart News reported, nearly 151,000 foreign nationals from 72 coronavirus countries have been apprehended at the southern border since October.

The U.S. is approaching 4,000 coronavirus cases while 67 deaths have been confirmed.

An Italian mayor says that his city’s crematory is now “unable to dispose of all the work it has to do,” as there have been so many bodies of those who have died due to the coronavirus.

Giorgio Gori — the mayor of Bergamo, Italy — says that it is no longer only the hospitals that are in a state of emergency but also the crematorium responsible for managing the bodies, according to a report by Il Giornale.

“The crematory is no longer enough,” said Gori. “The oven in the city of Bergamo is unable to dispose of all the work it has to do.”

Bergamo is an Italian city just northeast of Milan, located in the nation’s Lombardy region, which has been at the center of Italy’s — and Europe’s — coronavirus crisis.

“The city is the epicenter of this emergency,” said Gori. “The number of infected people continues to grow — those taken to hospital, put into intensive care. Unfortunately, the number of deaths have increased, about 50 per day, 300 in the last week.”

The mayor added that bodies are now being sent to other crematoriums, as the city’s facility is unable to handle the numbers of Wuhan virus victims that it receives.

“We will not be able to meet all the needs,” said Gori. “Many bodies have been sent to other places for cremation. The oven in the city of Bergamo is unable to dispose of all the work it has to do.”

“This is not meant to give you unpleasant details, but to make you understand the fatigue and suffering,” he added. “They are friends who die, acquaintances, colleagues.”

The outbreak of the Chinese virus in Italy — which Italian doctors have described as a “war situation” — has resulted in chaos and the overcrowding of hospitals while the Italian government scrambles to come up with enough ventilators and ICU beds for coronavirus patients.

Last week, while addressing the coronavirus crisis in Italian hospitals, Gori said that doctors are having to choose which patients to save, stating, “Patients who cannot be treated are left to die.”

One anesthetist working at a hospital in Bergamo echoed the mayor’s remarks, stating, “If someone between 80 and 95 has serious breathing difficulties, you probably don’t proceed.”

As of Monday, Italy’s coronavirus death toll has reached a startling 2,158, with 349 more people dead within the last 24 hours alone — and 202 of those deaths having been from Italy’s northern Lombardy region, according to La Repubblica.

As for Bergamo’s new dilemma involving crematories, the commissioner for cemetery services, Giacomo Angeloni, also shared his remarks, reports Il Giornale.

“Since last weekend there has been a crescendo of deaths,” said Angeloni, “numbers never seen for the activity of the Municipality of Bergamo.”

“At the cemetery in Bergamo there is a burial every half hour,” he added.

ATHENS (Sputnik) - The Greek police have arrested 127 people as of Monday for breaking nationwide quarantine rules since they came into effect over the weekend, the police statement reads.

They were caught in cafes, taverns, beauty parlors, leisure centres and supermarkets that were ordered to close for 14 days starting Saturday to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Those caught breaking the quarantine order face fines to the tune of 5,000 euros ($5,600) and a jail term of up to two years.

Greece has recorded 331 confirmed cases of people contracting the COVID-19 disease, and four patients have died. Ten people have recovered and were discharged from hospitals. The majority of those infected have mild symptoms.

At present, there have been nearly 180,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases worldwide and over 7,000 documented deaths, according to data collected by the Johns Hopkins Centre for Systems Science and Engineering. Multiple governments, including those of Italy, Spain, and France, have initiated countrywide shutdowns in an effort to cease the spread of the coronavirus.

Since it originated in China, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has infected more than 169,000 people in 148 countries and territories and killed more than 6,500, according to the latest data provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Amazon has announced it is hiring an additional 100,000 warehouse and delivery employees in the United States to deal with the growing demand amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

"We are opening 100,000 new full and part-time positions across the US in our fulfillment centers and delivery network to meet the surge in demand from people relying on Amazon’s service during this stressful time, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public, Amazon posted on its official blog.

The company says it is welcoming people working in hospitality and restaurant services who have been left with no job at the moment to come and join Amazon in the meantime until their employers can take them back.

Amazon also revealed it will be increasing the amount it pays its employees per hour of work in the US, United Kingdom and a number of EU countries.

As the COVID-19 outbreak is raging around the world, governments have advised citizens to stay at home, avoid visiting public places, including eating in cafes and restaurants and rely instead on delivery services.

As the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis comes to dominate headlines, little media attention has been given to the federal government’s decision to classify top-level meetings on domestic coronavirus response and lean heavily “behind the scenes” on U.S. intelligence and the Pentagon in planning for an allegedly imminent explosion of cases.

The classification of coronavirus planning meetings was first covered by Reuters, which noted that the decision to classify was “an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion.” Reuters further noted that the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Alex Azar, and his chief of staff had “resisted” the classification order, which was made in mid-January by the National Security Council (NSC), led by Robert O’Brien — a longtime friend and colleague of his predecessor John Bolton.

Following this order, HHS officials with the appropriate security clearances held meetings on coronavirus response at the department’s Sensitive Compartmentalized Information Facility (SCIF), which are facilities “usually reserved for intelligence and military operations” and — in HHS’ case — for responses to “biowarfare or chemical attacks.” Several officials who spoke to Reuters noted that the classification decision prevented key experts from participating in meetings and slowed down the ability of HHS and the agencies it oversees, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to respond to the crisis by limiting participation and information sharing.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday he is preparing legislation in response to the coronavirus pandemic that would help hospitals, expand unemployment and health insurance, and assist small businesses, a proposal his office says is meant to "wage war" against the virus. “We will need big, bold, urgent federal action to deal with this crisis,” said Schumer in a statement on Monday. “The kinds of targeted measures we are putting together will mainline money into the economy and directly into the hands of families that need it most," he added. Schumer's proposal, which would provide an infusion of at least $750 billion, will be presented to congressional appropriators as early as Tuesday.

The measure will expand upon the economic package passed by the House last week by giving more resources to hospitals and medical professionals, allowing loan payment postponements for all federal loans, helping education with remote learning, and ensuring public transportation continues to run. "Importantly, this proposal will also ensure our medical professionals have all the resources — including physical space and equipment — they need to provide treatment and keep Americans safe, among other people-focused initiatives,” said Schumer. His proposal has some overlap with the House bill, which includes provisions for free coronavirus testing, two weeks of paid sick leave and up to three months of paid leave for workers, increased unemployment benefits, lunches for children who would normally eat at school, and higher Medicaid funding.

‘Measure your Coffin day’: John Durham charges man with threatening to kill Adam Schiff

U.S. Attorney John Durham announced Monday that he charged a man with threatening to kill House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff. Durham, the U.S. attorney for Connecticut who is leading the Justice Department’s review of the Russia investigators, sent out a press release noting he charged Robert Phelps of Torrington, Connecticut, “with threatening to assault and murder a U.S. official, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years, and with making interstate threats, which carries a maximum term of imprisonment of five years.”

Phelps, 62, was arrested on March 13 after allegedly sending Schiff a vulgar and violent email on Nov. 12 telling the Democrat, “I want to kill you” and “smash your … face in,” according to court documents and statements made in court. Investigators interviewed Phelps at his Torrington residence and allegedly confirmed that Phelps sent the threatening communication. After appearing before U.S. Magistrate Judge William Garfinkel in Bridgeport, Phelps was released on a $25,000 bond.

The alleged threatening actions taken by Phelps, undertaken in the middle of Schiff-guided impeachment proceedings against President Trump, were detailed in a newly unsealed six-page affidavit by FBI special agent Daniel Heether. The complaint said Phelps sent Schiff’s office a “threatening communication” through his schedule-a-meeting website in November. “You little c—sucker I want to come and see you so I can spit in your face and I want to kill you with my bare hands and smash your sick little round fat lying face in,” the message said. “You had better hope I never meet up with you mother f—er.” The message was signed by “Robert M. Phelps Republican.” The email included Phelps’s full name, address, phone number, and email. For his organization, he listed “Lyingc—suckerclub.shittyshiffy” and for the names of additional participants he listed “NANCY PIGLOSI DUMOCRATIC RETARDS.” For the preferred day of the week for the meeting, the message stated: “Measure your Coffin day.”

Investigators interviewed Phelps at his home in earlier December, and he “admitted to sending the email to Congressman Schiff but did not see the message as threatening," according to the complaint. Phelps allegedly said he had a right to contact members of Congress and defend “his president.” When investigators had him review the message, Phelps said he was a Republican and repeated that he needed to protect “his president.” The complaint stated, “Phelps asked investigators if they were in his home because of Senator Blumenthal and that the Democrats that are involved in the impeachment proceedings against the president should be arrested.” The affidavit also notes that “Phelps stated that he would not send any more threatening emails.”

Schiff helped lead the Democratic Ukraine-related impeachment effort against Trump last year, resulting in Trump’s impeachment by the House for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in mid-December 2019 and his acquittal by the Senate in early February. Durham, who was selected by Attorney General William Barr to be his right-hand man in the effort to investigate the origins of the FBI’s Russia-related investigation of Trump’s campaign, is expected to complete his inquiry by the end of the summer.

Hollywood star Tom Hanks, along with his wife Rita Wilson, have left a Queensland hospital and are now staying at a rented home in Australia five days after they announced they were diagnosed with the coronavirus.

People, which was the first outlet to report the news, said a representative for Hanks informed the publication that both Hanks and Wilson “remain under quarantine in their house.”

In his announcement for testing positive during his time working in Australia, Hanks said he is taking a “one-day-at-a-time approach” in dealing with the virus.

“Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive,” the Forrest Gump star wrote in an Instagram post.

“Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed,” he added. “We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We’ll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves! Hanx!”

Hanks and his wife have been staying busy during the self-quarantine by talking with fans on social media. Wilson shared a Spotify playlist titled “Quarantunes,” which features Eric Carmen’s “All By Myself” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”

Hanks took to Twitter Sunday to thank the healthcare workers who have assisted him and shared a pithy photo of two pieces of toasts covered with Vegemite.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department moved on Monday to drop charges against two Russian shell companies accused of financing schemes to interfere in the 2016 election, saying that they were exploiting the case to gain access to sensitive information that Russia could weaponize.

The companies, Concord Management and Concord Consulting, were charged in 2018 in an indictment secured by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, along with 13 Russians and another company, the Internet Research Agency. Prosecutors said they operated a sophisticated scheme to use social media to spread disinformation, exploit American social divisions and try to subvert the 2016 election.

Unlike the others under indictment, Concord fought the charges in court. But instead of trying to defend itself, Concord seized on the case to obtain confidential information from prosecutors, then mount a campaign of information warfare, a senior Justice Department official said.

At one point, prosecutors complained that a cache of documents that could potentially be shared with the defendants included details about the government’s sources and methods for investigation, among its most sensitive secrets. Prosecutors feared Concord might publish them online.

(Reuters) - Power producer PG&E Corp won bankruptcy court approval to use up to $23 billion in financing after California Governor Gavin Newsom dropped his opposition, Bloomberg News reported on Monday. According to the report, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Dennis Montali said he will approve a financing motion for $11 billion in debt commitments and $9 billion in new equity that will support PG&E’s turnaround plan. The company can also raise an additional $3 billion through new shares under the plan, the report said. PG&E last month said it plans to raise up to $25.68 billion by selling securities, as it tries to wriggle its way out of the bankruptcy process and bounce back from the negative publicity after its equipment in California was blamed for the deadly wildfires.

The company, which filed for Chapter 11 protection in January last year, faced opposition from the governor for its restructuring plan. Last month, PG&E submitted an updated reorganization plan including a new board of directors and new roles aimed at addressing concerns raised by Newsom. The court approval clears an obstacle for PG&E to work its way out of the bankruptcy process, the report said. The San Francisco, California-based company needs to exit bankruptcy by June 30 to participate in a state-backed fund that would help power utilities cushion the hit from wildfires. PG&E did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Obama DOJ officials privately told Mueller they were alarmed by FBI treatment of Flynn

Former acting Attorney General Sally Yates and other senior Obama-era Justice Department officials told the Russia special prosecutor in private interviews they had concerns about the FBI’s conduct in investigating former Trump National Security Adviser Mike Flynn, according to memos that paint a dark portrait of the bureau’s behavior.

The documents, which include a letter from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team transmitting exculpatory evidence to Flynn’s defense lawyers in 2018, offer the most detailed montage to date about why Attorney General Bill Barr recently appointed a special prosecutor to review the government’s actions in the Flynn case.

Among other things, the correspondence shows:

Mueller’s team accepted Flynn’s guilty plea on a charge of lying about his conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak even though agents told DOJ they thought the former general was not lying and simply had a faulty memory.

DOJ officials believed the threat the FBI was using to prosecute Flynn under an obscure law known as the Logan Act was a “stretch.”

Flynn was lured by the FBI into a fateful interview with agents believing he was not in legal jeopardy, which caused him not to seek a lawyer.

Some of the DOJ officials’ assessments to the Mueller team were backed up by former deputy FBI director Andrew McCabe.

The documents add credence to the arguments Flynn’s new lawyer, Sidney Powell, is making that the former national security adviser was coerced into making his 2018 guilty plea and should be allowed to withdraw it.

Nuclear reactor shut down due to delay in facility to survive attack

One of the reactors at the Sendai nuclear plant here was shut down March 16 after the plant's operator failed to meet the deadline to complete an anti-terror facility. It is the first time a reactor has been halted for this reason in Japan. The No. 1 reactor, run by Kyushu Electric Power Co., shut down at 9 a.m. after its output was gradually lowered. The plant's No. 2 reactor is also expected to go offline in May due to delays in constructing the emergency facility. Reactors operated by Kansai Electric Power Co. and Shikoku Electric Power Co. will also be forced to shut down later this year for the same reason. The anti-terror facilities are designed to allow nuclear plant operators to manage the cooling of reactors and other operations through remote control in an emergency such as terrorists crashing an aircraft into a nuclear complex. Operators are required to construct the facilities within five years after measures to safeguard their reactors are approved by the Nuclear Regulation Authority, the government's nuclear watchdog. The requirement for the plants to construct anti-terror facilities is part of the more stringent reactor regulations that went into effect in 2013, following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. Reactors that have not completed an anti-terror facility that has cleared nuclear regulations a week before the deadline will be shut down, as mandated by NRA policy. The deadline for the emergency facility at the Sendai plant's No. 1 reactor was March 17.

The reactor restarted in August 2015, becoming the first in Japan to go back online after the triple meltdowns at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant set off by the March 11, 2011, Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. Kyushu Electric plans to restart the No. 1 reactor again on Dec. 26 after getting its anti-terror facility certified by the NRA. Constructing such facilities has taken more time than planned for many operators due to the large scale and high cost involved in the projects.
