This is exactly what I have been suspecting. This was recently published in Nature.

"The results showed the ORF8 and surface glycoprotein could bind to the porphyrin, respectively. Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin-Beta gene found on chromosome 11. Hemoglobin transports oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. Red blood cells with normal hemoglobin (hemoglobin-A) are smooth and round and glide through blood vessels.

This may be why an anti-malaria drug like Plaquenil might be effective against this virus. Sickle cell anemia mutates the hemoglobin-Beta gene, which then provides protection from malaria. COVID-19 attacks the beta-hemoglobin.

Abe says he'll declare emergency, but won't lock down Japan's cities

TOKYO - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is to declare a state of emergency in seven prefectures and announce a record economic stimulus package.

Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Osaka, Hyogo and Fukuoka prefectures will be covered by the decree which will start at midnight April 8 and is expected to stay until May 6.

The key purpose of the declaration is to "reduce people to people contact as much as possible and to prepare medical facilities," Abe said Monday. "We want people to refrain from going out as much as possible." But the Japanese leader said the measures would not amount to a lockdown.

"Even though we will declare a state of emergency, we will not lock cities down and I do not think it is necessary," Abe told reporters in Tokyo before a meeting of the government's chinavirus task force. "We will ramp up our effort to maintain economic activities as possible as well as preventing the further spread of the virus."

Tokyo stocks opened sharply higher on Tuesday following Abe's announcement. The Nikkei Stock Average was 2.8% higher in morning trading at 19,094.54 points.

It has dropped back below it's neckline at this point: 18,554.22 -22.08 -0.12%

In his announcement Abe said the government would also approve a 108 trillion yen (about $1 trillion) stimulus package. This includes 6 trillion yen in cash payments to households and small and medium enterprises, and a 26 trillion yen for a moratorium on tax payments and social insurance premiums.

"After taking the enormous impact on economy into consideration, we have decided to take 108 trillion yen stimulus measures, which is equal to 20% of GDP," he said. "I request those who live in the subject areas to stay calm and will request your further cooperation to prevent the spread of the virus."

Tokyo recorded 143 new infections on Sunday, a daily record that lifted the city's total to more than 1,000. Over 3,500 cases have been recorded nationally, with 73 deaths.

Based on a recently amended law, the declaration will give local authorities the legal power to request the public to stay home, and ask schools and businesses to close. The public will be asked to refrain from going outside except for grocery shopping and limited other tasks.

The declaration will lack the legal authority for Japan to impose the kind of lockdowns seen in other countries, but governments will be allowed to call for closures of schools, malls and movie theaters, as well as for the cancellations of events where large groups of people gather.

The constitution, which bows to civil liberties, does not permit the government to demand that individuals stay home.

Louisiana’s youngest COVID-19 victim: a premature baby who lived for one day

BATON ROUGE - The coronavirus pandemic claimed its youngest victim yet in Louisiana on Monday — a baby born prematurely after her mother contracted the disease and was put on a ventilator.

“The baby, because of the extreme prematurity did not survive,” said East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark, who blamed the mother’s COVID-19 disease for putting her into labor.

The girl survived only one day, and the coroner said both he and Louisiana’s state epidemiologist agreed that she belongs in the state’s coronavirus death toll. Whether the baby had COVID-19 remains under investigation, but Clark said her death is clearly linked to the virus.

If not for her mother’s infection, Clark said, “Likely she would have not gone into preterm labor and there would have been a different outcome. This is an incredibly sad case.”

Clark said the mother was admitted to a hospital on April 1 and remains alive. He provided no details about her condition, and no identifying information. This premature baby wasn’t the first U.S. newborn to die in similar circumstances, he added.

Louisiana’s coronavirus caseload grew Monday to nearly 15,000 people with confirmed infections, about 12% of whom are hospitalized. The death toll rose by 35 from a day earlier to at least 512.

Clark County’s 2.8 million people have literally only one level 1 trauma ICU center because of the monopoly created by the Clark County Commission led for almost a decade by now Gov. Sisolak.

Steve Sisolak was first elected to the Clark County Commission in 2009 and was the Chairman from 2013 until he was elected Governor in 2018. During this time no new Level 1 trauma centers were approved. Level 1 trauma centers are state certified and must maintain certain equipment, must be staffed 24/7 with doctors and nurses ready to provide trauma care for patients who suffer from traumatic injuries such as gunshot wounds, falls and car accidents. When hospitals get this designation, must expand the number of ICU beds and their staffing. These Level 1 trauma centers are proving to be invaluable in the fight against corona virus. Hospital staff we spoke with said “Our Level 1 trauma center, our staff and physicians are highly trained and routinely prepare for situations like these”.

According to Kaiser Health News in 2017, Clark County blocked the applications of three hospitals in the Las Vegas area to be designated as Level III trauma centers. Even after the Oct. 1 2017 Las Vegas Mass Shooting where some 500 people were shot, Commission Chairman Sisolak continued to block any permits of new Level 1 ICU Trauma Centers in Clark County.

But the SEIU Nevada Local 1107, which is a core Democrat funding source, donated $100,000 in 2018 to the Democrat front group, Nevadans For Secure Elections, which aided the Governor’s election efforts, in addition to the thousands of dollars the union gave to individual Nevada Democrat Law makers. SEIU claims to have over 9,000 members. 9,000 reliable Democrat voters have an awful lot of juice in Clark County. This may explain why the Clark County Commission and State Democrats blocked any effort by private hospitals to build competing Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 trauma centers over the past decade.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in a phone conversation with Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, stated the readiness of France and European partners to continue their humanitarian cooperation with Iran, the Elysee Palace said in a statement.

"The President of the Republic had a meeting today with the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He expressed solidarity with the Iranian people, severely affected by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic", it said.

"He recalled that France and its European partners had delivered medical equipment to Iran and were ready to continue humanitarian cooperation", the Elysee Palace said.

Macron also said he hoped Iran would return to compliance with its nuclear obligations and refrain from taking further measures out of line with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran is one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19 and has been struggling to slow the outbreak, a task made more difficult as the nation is under severe trade sanctions by the Trump administration. Tehran, along with many world officials and organisations, has repeatedly called on Washington to ease its unilateral economic sanctions to help Iran tackle the spread of the pandemic.

Russia and China, along with other nations, have consistently called on the administration of US President Donald Trump to lift the sanctions, and have sent humanitarian aid and medical professionals to Iran in a bid to help the coronavirus-hit country.

As of Monday, Iran has seen 136 new coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's overall death toll to 3,739, along with 60,500 confirmed infection cases, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.

It is a Wednesday afternoon, and the 31-year-old has his young sons, Austin and Evan, with him hauling a load of piglets from Cumberland County to Iowa, one of millions of road warriors behind the wheel of a truck traveling across the country every hour of every day making sure the food and necessities you need and enjoy are available at your local grocers. “I am hauling baby pigs from where they're born in Pennsylvania to the farms where they fatten them out in Iowa,” he said from his starting point. He is heading out to Iowa with his truck filled with 20-pound pigs. “So on our end of it with farmers, every eight weeks a new litter of pigs is born and we have to get the little ones out of the barn, the barn needs to be empty so the next batch can come.” “If we don’t transport freight, the country comes to a standstill,” Eby says matter-of-factly. Pigs have to go somewhere to fatten. From there they are processed and delivered to grocery stores and butcher shops in refrigerated trucks all over the country. That is where KLLM Transport Services out of Jackson, Mississippi, comes in, whose core business is in refrigerated transportation. “We have about 4,000 tractor-trailers nationwide with about 25 locations across the country,” said Jim Richards, CEO of KLLM. And they haven’t stopped moving.

There are over 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the United States, according to the American Trucking Associations, who deliver billions of tons of freight from one place to the other every year. In the weeks since the coronavirus has spread across the country, KLLM truckers are the men and women who are making sure perishable foods and pharmaceuticals are delivered across the lower 48 states and Mexico, never stopping or slowing down your ability to get what you need — despite all of the barriers, restrictions, and complications of the coronavirus.

Richards was hired by the company straight out of college for their management training program, which included him getting a commercial driver license and driving across the country with a load. As a future manager, he deeply understood what the life of trucking and hauling meant. Now, he says the biggest change is people not working in the office. “We've never been one that allowed very many of our employees to work remotely. And so, thank goodness that we are a very technology forward-thinking company. And that's really what has saved us,” he said. Each truck has satellite two-way communication, Richards explained. “The technology that we employ, both from a communications perspective on the trucks, as well as location, and also safety has really been a benefit for us during this time,” he said. “Obviously we'd never foresee anything like that. But it enabled us to continue to operate. And our non-driving staff, which we have never been allowed to work remotely, for the most part, we've got about 95% of them all working from home,” Richards explained.

Truckers have become a new wave of front line responders in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic — starting with Eby, who gets the piglet to the farm to be fattened, and the next driver who gets the fattened pig to the butcher, and the next one who gets the refrigerated meat to the store. Before the realities of this pandemic, trucks were often ignored. Their impact on our daily lives was considered an annoyance, as they chugged slowly up the winding hills of our back roads on the way to that grocery store, hospital, department store, or Amazon distribution center. Never mind that they are filled with those essential things we have to have or nonessential things we thought we had to have. Too often, people mindlessly assume what they buy at Target or Walmart or Whole Foods comes from the back room, not from a farm upstate, or a factory four states away.

“I'm glad that our industry is finally getting a little bit of a positive spin,” said Richards, “So many times, you run up and down the highways and all you see is plaintiff attorneys advertising, wanting to sue truckers.”

So for Anons looking for first hand evidence of the covid19 pandemic, I have news. I have been trying to determine if this virus is the real deal or not for over two months. Hospitals seem empty and news way overhyped or even fake. Today, I got called into my state's (can't say for legal reasons) health department ( I have a M.P.H.). While I was there I saw three confirmed lab reports of local patients positive covid tests. Now, the emergency response was preparing for a huge influx of patients, but that was based entirely on suggestions and possibilities, not actual infections. The department was also receiving hyped information from the top of the state down, while actual patient numbers were low and mortality rates averaged about 1.5%. The real number agreed upon was .7%. As a reference the common flu has a mortality rate of .5%. Right now, the professionals do not have answers as to whether or not this virus is completely cured or if it returns in patients. All the data is suggesting that hydrochloroquine combined with azrithromyecin is the cure. Vitamin C is also crucial for quick recovery. If you get the virus do not worry. You will feel sick, most only mildly so. They seem to get better quickly and move on. Few get really sick and fewer still face death (higher in 70+ aged patients and those with co-morbidity issues such as liver disease etc...). This is not the end all we have been told. Over the past weeks, the Trump Administration has tightened the noose around Nicolas Maduro’s regime, increasing pressure on the country sitting on top of the world’s largest oil reserves. Venezuela is already reeling from a years-long economic disaster that has slashed its crude oil production in recent years. This year, the country found itself with two other major global crises to manage—the coronavirus pandemic and the tumbling and highly volatile oil market with oil prices so low that they can’t cover the costs of pumping Venezuela’s heavy crude out of the ground.

Maduro’s regime, which has managed to cling to power more than a year after the U.S. stepped up sanctions to ban Venezuelan oil exports to the United States, now has to cope not only with the three crises but also with additional pressure from the Trump Administration.

Disaster for the ordinary people in Venezuela is only set to increase. Still, some analysts argue that further pressure on Maduro could only serve to unite the ranks of the regime, which controls the military and the arms during a global pandemic.

“This is government that holds itself up because it control all arms, and especially during a pandemic, having a monopoly on violence is indispensable,” Phil Gunson, a Caracas-based analyst at the International Crisis Group, told Bloomberg.

The U.S. is not backing down from the harsh sanctions on Venezuela, resisting calls from around the world, and from U.S. Democratic lawmakers for sanctions relief in times of pandemic.

The U.S. Administration says that sanctions do not apply to humanitarian aid and medicines and has stepped up pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro in recent weeks.

Two weeks ago, Maduro was charged in a Southern District of New York federal indictment for narco-terrorism, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices. The U.S. Department of State is also offering a reward of up to US$15 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Maduro.

A week ago, the U.S. Department of State proposed a so-called ‘Democratic Transition Framework for Venezuela’, offering to ease sanctions in exchange for Maduro’s regime and supporters of opposition leader Juan Guaidó—recognized as Venezuela’s legitimate president by the U.S. and 50 other countries—forming a power-sharing government until fair elections are held.

“Economic pressure will continue until Maduro accepts a genuine democratic transition,” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said upon announcing the proposal.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza rejected the U.S. proposal, saying that the government reiterates it does not accept and will not accept any tutelage from any foreign government.

The U.S. also pressured Venezuela’s oil exports over the past two months, slapping sanctions on two subsidiaries of Russia’s oil giant Rosneft for trading Venezuelan oil. Last week, Rosneft ditched all its oil operations and assets in Venezuela, transferring them to a wholly state-owned oil company named Roszarubezhneft.

The loss of trading partners due to additional U.S. sanctions, the colossal global demand destruction, and the coronavirus pandemic for which an economy in collapse such as Venezuela’s is unprepared, add to the endemic lack of funds to support the country’s oil production.

Earlier this year, Venezuela managed to achieve a slight increase in its crude oil output, only for the coronavirus pandemic to spread and cause significant demand destruction worldwide, putting more pressure on Maduro’s regime.

In March, Venezuela’s total exports of crude oil and fuel plunged by 26 percent month on month to just below 800,000 bpd—the second-lowest crude and fuel export volumes since the U.S. launched its pressure campaign on Maduro in January last year, according to data from Refinitiv Eikon and state oil firm PDVSA cited by Reuters.

The U.S. is banking on putting additional pressure on Venezuela while its economy and society are battered from all sides, hoping to oust Maduro this time. Yet, analysts warn that this could only serve to close ranks within the regime.

Former Ak-Chin Charman Louis Manuel Jr. dies at 57

MARICOPA — Louis Manuel Jr., who led the Ak-Chin Indian Community as chairman during a period of growth for the tribe, has died.

Manuel, 57, died unexpectedly of unconfirmed causes Sunday morning. He leaves behind his wife, Yolanda Rodriguez, children and extended family including his sister, Erica Manuel.

Both posted heartfelt messages to social media following his passing.

“My precious, precious husband,” Rodriguez posted on Facebook. “My heart.... We were perfect together! I cannot expect that anyone would have less than kind words as there was no greater man in the world.”

Ultra-Star Multi-tainment Center also made a public statement commending Manuel for his extensive career in public service, and his work on the center during his time on the Tribal Council. Phoenix Indian Center similarly applauded him as “a strong leader and noted as one of the most influential minority leaders in Arizona.”

Manuel’s sister Erica described him as a man who was always looking out for his community, and a great role model to her.

“He instilled so much knowledge and leadership into me. I am who I am today, because of him. I loved our time together and will remember all that he taught me about life and traditions,” Erica wrote on Facebook. “He was a great man, husband, father, leader and brother ... I am so emotionally numb right now. Please keep us in your prayers.”

During his time on the council, Manuel was an integral part of relations between the Maricopa and Ak-Chin communities. He presented Maricopa many monetary donations from his council including millions in school funding and public parks.

“Chairman Manuel, as I knew him, was a statesman, a respected leader, a family man, and a dear, dear friend,” Maricopa Mayor Christian Price wrote on Facebook. “He will most likely never know what he meant to me and what he taught me, and all that I truly learned from him that made me feel like Ak-Chin/Maricopa family. He will be sincerely missed.”

Today, the High Court granted special leave to appeal against a decision of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria and unanimously allowed the appeal. The High Court found that the jury, acting rationally on the whole of the evidence, ought to have entertained a doubt as to the applicant's guilt with respect to each of the offences for which he was convicted, and ordered that the convictions be quashed and that verdicts of acquittal be entered in their place.

On 11 December 2018, following a trial by jury in the County Court of Victoria, the applicant, who was Archbishop of Melbourne at the time of the alleged offending, was convicted of one charge of sexual penetration of a child under 16 years and four charges of committing an act of indecency with or in the presence of a child under the age of 16 years. This was the second trial of these charges, the jury at the first trial having been unable to agree on its verdicts. The prosecution case, as it was left to the jury, alleged that the offending occurred on two separate occasions, the first on 15 or 22 December 1996 and the second on 23 February 1997. The incidents were alleged to have occurred in and near the priests' sacristy at St Patrick's Cathedral in East Melbourne, following the celebration of Sunday solemn Mass. The victims of the alleged offending were two Cathedral choirboys aged 13 years at the time of the events.

The applicant sought leave to appeal against his convictions before the Court of Appeal. On 21 August 2019 the Court of Appeal granted leave on a single ground, which contended that the verdicts were unreasonable or could not be supported by the evidence, and dismissed the appeal. The Court of Appeal viewed video-recordings of a number of witnesses' testimony, including that of the complainant. The majority, Ferguson CJ and Maxwell P, assessed the complainant to be a compelling witness. Their Honours went on to consider the evidence of a number of "opportunity witnesses", who had described the movements of the applicant and others following the conclusion of Sunday solemn Mass in a way that was inconsistent with the complainant's account. Their Honours found that no witness could say with certainty that these routines and practices were never departed from and concluded that the jury had not been compelled to entertain a reasonable doubt as to the applicant's guilt. Weinberg JA dissented, concluding that, by reason of the unchallenged evidence of the opportunity witnesses, the jury, acting rationally on the whole of the evidence, ought to have had a reasonable doubt.

On 17 September 2019, the applicant applied to the High Court for special leave to appeal from the Court of Appeal's decision on two grounds. On 13 November 2019, Gordon and Edelman JJ referred the application for special leave to a Full Court of the High Court for argument as on an appeal. The application was heard by the High Court on 11 and 12 March 2020.

The High Court considered that, while the Court of Appeal majority assessed the evidence of the opportunity witnesses as leaving open the possibility that the complainant's account was correct, their Honours' analysis failed to engage with the question of whether there remained a reasonable possibility that the offending had not taken place, such that there ought to have been a reasonable doubt as to the applicant's guilt. The unchallenged evidence of the opportunity witnesses was inconsistent with the complainant's account, and described: (i) the applicant's practice of greeting congregants on or near the Cathedral steps after Sunday solemn Mass; (ii) the established and historical Catholic church practice that required that the applicant, as an archbishop, always be accompanied when robed in the Cathedral; and (iii) the continuous traffic in and out of the priests' sacristy for ten to 15 minutes after the conclusion of the procession that ended Sunday solemn Mass.
