'I wish you the best': US military adviser resigns after Trump's controversial photo-op at church

The former principal deputy under secretary of defence for policy resigned, effective immediately, from the Defence Department’s science board.

James Miller’s reasoning centered around President Donald Trump’s controversial visit to St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he posed with a Bible for photographs as protesters in the surrounding area were tear-gassed for the event.

Defence Secretary Mark Esper was also present during the visit.

“You may not have been able to stop President Trump from directing this appalling use of force, but you could have chosen to oppose it,” Miller wrote in his resignation letter to Esper, which was obtained by The Washington Post. “Instead, you visibly supported it.”

A Department of Defence adviser resigned, effective immediately, from the military’s science board citing what he believed to be a violation of conduct from Defence Secretary Mark Esper.

In his resignation letter, James Miller Jr., the former under secretary of defence for policy from 2012 to 2014, recalled that he swore an oath of office to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States … and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same,” similar to what the defence secretary had done before he took office.

“On Monday, June 1, 2020, I believe that you violated that oath,” Miller wrote in his letter to Esper, which was obtained by The Washington Post.

Miller’s reasoning centered around President Donald Trump’s controversial visit to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, on Monday, where he posed with a Bible for photographs as protesters in the surrounding area were hit with smoke canisters and pepper balls at the event, according to the United States Park Police.

The trip was widely condemned by religious leaders, including Washington Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who called it “baffling and reprehensible.”

Esper, along with US Army Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was also present during the visit.

“Law-abiding protesters just outside the White House were dispersed using tear gas and rubber bullets – not for the sake of safety, but to clear a path for a presidential photo op,” Miller wrote. “You then accompanied President Trump in walking from the White House to St. John’s Episcopal Church for that photo.”

“You may not have been able to stop President Trump from directing this appalling use of force, but you could have chosen to oppose it,” Miller added. “Instead, you visibly supported it.”

In his letter, Miller also queried Esper on where he believed the Constitution’s limits were in relation to his duties.

Ending qualified immunity: Five things to know about the legal obstacle protecting police officers who violate rights of citizens

The killing of George Floyd has drawn comparisons to the death of Eric Garner. In both instances, a black man was arrested and forced to the ground by a white officer. In Garner's case, the New York City officer used a chokehold. In Floyd's case, the Minneapolis officer knelt on his neck. Both men were filmed telling the arresting officer that they couldn't breathe just prior to their death. Both incidents sparked protests and a national conversation about the use of force by law enforcement but have diverged in one significant aspect: The officer who put Garner in a chokehold was never indicted on criminal nor civil charges (the debate over whether to bring federal civil right charges ended last year), while the officer who pinned Floyd was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. But if Floyd's family were to pursue civil recourse, they will likely wade into the same issue experienced by Garner's relatives. Garner's family received $59 million from a civil settlement with the New York City Police Department, but they were unable to pursue a federal civil rights lawsuit against Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who performed the chokehold and denied using excessive force, because he was protected by qualified immunity (Pantaleo, who was fired in August, sued to get his job back in the fall). This sparked a wave of calls for reforming qualified immunity. During his brief run for president, Julian Castro listed Garner's case as justification for his proposal to end qualified immunity as the cornerstone of proposed policing reforms. Now, Floyd's death has inspired many more calls for change, including legislation that has drawn bipartisan attention in the House and the Senate.

What is qualified immunity? Qualified immunity is a legal protection for government officials that prevents them from being individually held liable in federal civil rights lawsuits for illegal and unconstitutional acts. The immunity not only protects individual officers from facing damages for violating the rights of a citizen, but it blocks federal civil rights cases from going to trial, thus shielding them from the financial burden that comes with a lawsuit. A civil rights lawsuit can only be brought against a government official if it can be proven a "clearly established" right has been violated, but that's a high bar to cross.

What is a "clearly established" right? Clearly established rights are centered on precedent, taking cues from court decisions of the past by a federal court in the same jurisdiction or the Supreme Court on similar situations. It does not matter whether the offending official maliciously violated a citizen's rights. This legal threshold is difficult to meet. In February of this year, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that an inmate in a Texas prison could not seek federal legal recourse against a prison guard who pepper-sprayed him in the eyes "for no reason" because the legal precedent only included cases where a prisoner was tased or hit without reason. There was no precedent for mace, so the prison guard was granted qualified immunity.

What has the Supreme Court said? Qualified immunity has been around in some form since a court ruling in 1967 and was greatly expanded in the 1982 Supreme Court ruling in Harlow v. Fitzgerald. In that ruling, the court said qualified immunity was needed to allow law enforcement officials to do their job without fear of persistent legal recourse, no matter their intent. The 1982 ruling did away with the legal threshold that mandated an officer act in "good faith." The officer must only prove to the court that he or she holds a government job that requires immunity, such as being a member of a police department, and that he or she was working in that capacity when the incident took place. The Supreme Court has made several rulings over the years reaffirming qualified immunity. "Qualified immunity balances two important interests — the need to hold public officials accountable when they exercise power irresponsibly and the need to shield officials from harassment, distraction, and liability when they perform their duties reasonably,” the court wrote in Pearson v. Callahan, a subsequent qualified immunity ruling from 2008. The court announced in May that it had declined to hear three additional cases seeking to scale qualified immunity in its current session.

Idaho Town Taken Over By Armed 'Patriot' Patrols Amid Rumors Antifa Headed There

Amid rumors of mass protests and riots in the northwest Idaho city of Coeur d’Alene, some locals weren't having it, and armed themselves to patrol city streets lined with small businesses.

It's a trend giving rise to fears that violent armed clashes between different American factions are imminent. Already videos from cities across the nation have depicted counter-demonstrators taking matters into their own hands as police retreat.

"Reports and rumors that groups bent on rioting and violence in Coeur d’Alene brought out men and women with guns on Monday determined to stop them if they arrive," local Idaho media reported.

"Dan Carson was patrolling Sherman Avenue with an AR-12 automatic 12-gauge across his chest, an AR-15 strapped to his back, two 9mm handguns holstered and a .38 special, too," the report continued.

Groups of loosely affiliated 'Proud Boys' and armed 'patriots' began lining the streets of downtown Coeur d’Alene over reports left wing militants and Antifa anarchists were planning to cause mayhem in the area:

Soon, more armed men, self-described as a loosely formed group of patriots, arrived. They took up posts at corners on both sides of Sherman Avenue.

Later, they were joined by hundreds of citizens packing rifles, semi-automatic weapons, handguns, and bows and arrows.

The sidewalks were packed with people walking up and down Sherman Avenue, firearms proudly displayed for all to see.

They carried guns, had them holstered around their hips and had them strapped across their backs.

TEMPLE, Texas (KWTX) Lydia Brynn Christensen, 33, of Temple, could be sentenced to decades in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to charges of possession and distribution of child pornography.

Christensen entered the plea Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Waco.

She was arrested on Nov. 7, 2019, a little more than two months after a federal search warrant was executed at her home on Aug. 30, 2019 and her cellphone was seized.

“A subsequent search of the phone revealed the presence of numerous images and videos depicting child pornography,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release Tuesday.

“Also, authorities discovered numerous communications on the phone whereby Christensen had transmitted and received child pornography.”

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7.

Report: Criminals Netted $1.4B From Crypto Crimes

In the first five months of the year, cryptocurrency thefts, hacks and frauds totaled $1.4 billion, and could exceed the 2019 loss of $4.5 billion by year’s end, according to a new report.

Crypto intelligence company CipherTrace’s “Spring 2020 Cryptocurrency Anti-Money Laundering and Crime Report” revealed the thefts have escalated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing global economic crisis.

The largest contributor to this high number is a Ponzi scheme by Wotoken in China, CipherTrace found. The scam promised investors incredible returns using nonexistent algorithmic trading software. Ultimately, Wotoken stole an estimated $1 billion in crypto from more than 715,000 victims, with one operator having ties to the $118 million PlusToken Ponzi scheme earlier this year

Ex-Department Of Justice Leader Who Appointed Mueller To Testify In Senate

Against the backdrop of a national crisis over race and law enforcement, the Senate Judiciary Committee plans to convene a hearing on Wednesday about the now-closed investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., appeared set to go ahead with a session scheduled before the flare in protests and violence that followed the death of a Minneapolis man, George Floyd, at the hands of police in an incident that reignited long-simmering anger at police in cities across the country.

The hearing is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. ET. Watch it live here.

The sole witness is former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who’ll likely be grilled about revelations about the Russia investigation that have come to light since he left the Justice Department last year.

The political context has evolved: Republicans want to tie former Vice President Joe Biden into what they call the abuses of power from the end of the Obama era.

Graham and Republicans want answers about what Rosenstein and other Justice Department leaders knew at the time they were taking fateful decisions about the FBI’s investigation into the Russian interference in the 2016 election, which sought to hinder Hillary Clinton and help elect then-candidate Donald Trump.

Today, Americans must call upon one person to answer a national call to duty because her country critically needs her to help put us on a path to healing a broken nation and restoring trust in our elected leaders.

We collectively must implore a reluctant Michelle Obama to make herself available to join Joe Biden’s ticket as the Democratic Party’s vice presidential nominee. Let me explain why.

On top of a global pandemic, our cities now are facing massive unrest, violence and destruction, and threats to the social order, arising from yet another series of horrific killings of unarmed African-American men and women by the police — and all built upon decades of racial injustice and inequality.

The current occupant of the White House lacks what we need most right now — calm, thoughtful and principled leadership that can exhibit understanding, compassion and empathy for those who have been ignored and suffering for too long and are now seeking justice. Instead, he seems capable only of inflaming dissension and causing strife.

We need a person who can join Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president, in showing us a transformative path forward as one people. We need a leader who, with her grace, compassion and humility, can bring people together to help them heal and reconcile with each other.

We need a person who will help Biden seek genuine reform, not just in the criminal justice arena but on the environment, health care and education.

We need a person who knows about how partnerships work, someone with exceptional credentials and devoid of political ambitions.

Obama is that person if she will accept the mantle of civic duty and personal sacrifice that our nation so desperately needs from her.

Biden and Obama would be truly formidable and, I submit, unbeatable running mates in November. She would bring energy, wisdom and passion for righteousness to the ticket. Can’t you just envision, even if mail-in voting is available, the long lines of voters of all races standing 6 feet apart to vote in the Twin Cities, Milwaukee, Detroit, Philadelphia, Phoenix and so many other places throughout our country, all waiting patiently to cast their ballots for hope and healing in the most important election in their lifetimes?

We need a Biden-Obama Electoral College victory to be so decisive in November that the current occupant of the White House would have absolutely no excuse to try to contest the election’s outcome.

The election of Biden and Obama, however, would be just the first step on the long road to changing our country’s culture and values to more fully achieve a just society for all. Each of us has our own role to play in that process, starting first with voting this fall, but then with individual actions.

For my part, I will continue to seek positive changes by teaching future lawyers in the classroom and online. Given the horrible and senseless death of George Floyd and all the subsequent events of the last week, I am called to do this now more than ever.

It angers my soul and breaks my heart to see how George Floyd was horrifically killed, pleading and gasping for air as he was being restrained by a person sworn to protect him. I moved to Minnesota in the mid-1980s and lived in Minneapolis suburbs for more than 25 years. I served as a federal prosecutor in Minnesota for most of that time.

For the past 12 years I have taught criminal-law-related courses at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis. This August I will be co-teaching a new course there that could not be more needed right now: Restorative Justice, Law and Healing. The course will expose students to the prevalence of inequality, bias and prejudice in our justice system. They will read “Just Mercy,” the inspiring story of Bryan Stevenson’s landmark efforts to combat racial injustice in the South.

Our students will hear from women and men of color who will come to share their stories of facing and overcoming racial prejudice, and seeking justice for all, so we might learn from their example.

These are the some of small steps that we can take as educators to open eyes, minds and hearts.

Our country obviously needs much greater steps by our elected leaders. I can only hope and pray that come next January 2021, our nation will have the opportunity to have Joe Biden and Michelle Obama lead us forward.

Even Far-Left Southern Poverty Law Center Says No Evidence White Supremacists Sparking Riots

I never thought this could happen, SPLC telling the truth?

There is “no clear evidence” white supremacists are participating in the rioting and looting sweeping U.S. cities across America following the death of George Floyd, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) conceded in a New York Times report published Sunday.

“Signs of any organized effort or even participation in the violence were relatively rare,” the Times acknowledged in the bottom half of its article, referring to white supremacists.

“I have not seen any clear evidence that white supremacists or militiamen are masking up and going out to burn and loot,” Howard Graves, an SPLC research analyst who tracks white supremacists and other anti-government extremist groups, told the newspaper.

On Monday, Politico did report an account linked to white supremacists was posing as the far-left group Antifa that espouses anarchist views and encouraging violence early last week, two days after Floyd’s death on May 25.

Citing the FBI, a May 29 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intelligence memo to authorities, marked unclassified/law enforcement sensitive, reportedly said that on May 27 “a white supremacist extremist Telegram channel incited followers to engage in violence and start the ‘boogaloo ’— a term used by some violent extremists to refer to the start of a second Civil War — by shooting in a crowd.”

A Telegram message urged potential shooters to “frame the crowd around you” for the violence, the DHS document added, according to Politico, which does not provide any evidence of white supremacists actually participating in the riots.

I finally get why the DNC media complex has been smearing Trump with a 'fascist'/'Hitler' label.

The Satanic DNC media complex, with their fragile egos, have been on the receiving end of a power and strength (God) that does not relent.

Those who adhere to the sams 'man become God' philosophy that plagued the minds of thinkers from Plotinus to Hegel to Marx to Alinsky, the root of this historical thread of ideas is that to be a mortal, finite, corporeal human being, to not be omniscient or omnipotent like God, is to be 'oppressed' in a much more 'cosmic' way than the anti-capitalist tropes of 'workers being separated from the products' or 'economic alienation'.

These people view alienation the way the EARLY Karl Marx did BEFORE he started PROJECTING that feeling of his own self-alienation (caused by bad philosophy) and 'seeing' it in the form of a great two class war to end all wars, the ultimate Ego (one side of his own self-divided aggrandizing self, but 'seen' as a force outside of himself and oppressing as one gigantic group, i.e. 'capitalists'), and the ultimate Slave (the other side of his self-divided self, his mortal, finite, corporeal contingent self, but 'seen' as a force outside of himself and being oppressed as one gigantic group, i.e. 'proletariats').

People who believe and accept the same 'dialectic' philosophy as envisioned by Plotinus, they will invariably become self-alienated and for the radicals among them, their revolt against nature, against reason, may look like they're fighting to achieve a realizable goal, of justice or peace or whatever, but at root they are truly at war with the metaphysical fabric of reality itself.

There is no victory in rebelling against the reality of human nature (that we are all LOGICALLY 'constrained' to having to make limited choices by using scarce (finite) means to achieve satisfaction.

No human on Earth has ever, none can now, and none could ever avoid the logical categories of action, that we are not Gods, that we cannot bring about all desires/outcomes at once and experience total and complete satisfaction with every need and want conceivable as being satisfied.

We are not beings like that.

I know this as an absolute fact because any attempt to dispute it, would and must itself be logically structured as an action, that whoever disputes it would and could only be using scarce means (their bodies, communication materials, etc) to achieving a specific goal (to convince themselves, or others, or maybe they just want to 'entertain' themselves or others). And this must be done through TIME.

This TEMPORAL 'constraint' has frustrated the more radical 'free thinkers' since the dawn of humanity. LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A man went on a towering mission up a pole, a day after vandals left their mark at an American Legion post in La Mesa, including the burning of a flag.

Just before 8 p.m. Saturday, a burning American flag was recorded being hoisted up a pole at American Legion Post 282. Before the night would end, vandals would also tag walls and shatter windows there. But it was the image of the burning flag that sent Cory into action after he saw the video Sunday morning.

"Really got me sad and upset at the same time," said Cory.

"Everyone has a right to protest, but I think it went too far when they disrespected the flag," said Cory.

Rosenstein insists that the information in appointing Mueller was based on that incomplete information at the time. He admitted that by August 2017 when he signed off on the Mueller investigation there was no evidence at all of collusion with the Russians.

Mexican Government Freezes Nearly 2000 Cartel Bank Accounts

Mexico’s government targeted nearly 2,000 bank accounts linked to one of the nation’s most violent cartels, Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG).

Known as “Blue Agave,” the operation sought to freeze 1,939 bank accounts by Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), a news release revealed. Over several months, the UIF, led by Santiago Nieto, went through thousands of unusual transactions and identified 1,770 individuals, 167 companies, and two trust funds all linked to the CJNG.

The CJNG is considered one of Mexico’s most violent and is linked to the use of improvised explosive devices and hiring Colombian terrorists. Under the leadership of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, the CJNG’s turf wars throughout the country are leading to a dramatic spike in violence.

Authorities analyzed thousands of transactions and transfers to identify the individuals behind the funneling of suspected cartel funds. It remains unclear how much was seized.

More than 40,000 financial operations that were flagged as either “unusual” or relevant during the probes. Those operations had an estimated value of $14 billion pesos or $700 million USD. Mexican authorities also analyzed more than 8,424 international money transfers with a value of $7 billion pesos or $350 million USD. Mexican authorities also combed through 2,102 reports of cash transfers worth $2,955,000 USD and 6,507 interbank transfers worth $33 million USD.
