Washington (CNN)The race to see who will fill the House seat left vacant when former Democratic Rep. Katie Hill resigned last year amid controversy will soon be decided with a special election taking place Tuesday.

The congressional district California's 25th, which encompasses parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties and spans suburban and rural areas is being fiercely contested.

Democrat Christy Smith, a state assembly member, faces off against Republican Mike Garcia, a businessman and Navy veteran who has never before held political office.

The special election will decide who serves out the remainder of what would have been Hill's first term in office. But whatever the outcome, there will be a rematch. That's because Smith and Garcia are also running as candidates for a November general election that will determine who holds the seat in the next session of Congress.

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The state has given a glimpse into what eating at restaurants and taverns is going to look like once coronavirus restrictions are eased in your region.

Restaurants now have the set of requirements they will need to comply with the Gov. Inslee's 4-phase plan to reopen the state.

While most of the state is in Phase 1, which still prohibits in-seating dining, eight rural counties have been granted variances to advance to Phase 2 - and test out the new restaurant model.

In-service dining will depend on meeting 13 criteria. Among the largest changes will be that staff must keep a daily log of customers with email and telephone numbers for 30 days so in the event of an outbreak, health officials can contact those who may have been exposed. Experts say such contact tracing will be key to containing further widespread outbreaks and allow the economy to slowly reopen.

Obama administration alumni, once cool on the prospect of Joe Biden becoming the 2020 Democratic presidential nominee, are toeing the party line. Dan Pfeiffer, an Obama White House communications director and now the co-host of Crooked Media's popular Pod Save America podcast, put his name to a fundraising email sent out this week by the Democratic Party. "I worked with Vice President Biden for many years. I know that he and his team are ready to lead our country, but it is up to us to come together in full force to help elect him as president and thousands of Democrats across the nation to their seats as well," he wrote.

Pfeiffer's email was shared on behalf of the Democratic National Committee's Democratic Unity Fund, a program launched by former President Barack Obama in November 2019. The fund will help the party invest in data and technology infrastructure, battleground state field organization, and voter protection efforts before this year's general election against President Trump, Pfeiffer added. The Democratic strategist's tone isn't unexpected, but it differs from the one he and other Obama veterans adopted during the primary when they openly criticized Biden or stayed on the sidelines.

Pfeiffer, the author behind Un-Trumping America, a book mapping out how Democrats can reclaim the White House this cycle, has been candid about some of Biden's flaws. "I think it’s important and unfortunate that the two candidates who remain in this primary are the ones who I think have least grappled with the political forces that led to Trump," Pfeiffer told Vox in March of Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Obama endorsed Biden in April after Sanders dropped out of the race, triggering a cascade of support from he and Biden's former colleagues. Pfeiffer, along with ex-Obama advisers Valerie Jarrett, Alyssa Mastromonaco, Jon Favreau, and Tommy Vietor, joined the two-term vice president for a virtual fundraiser this month.

Recent US indictments have shown in detail how Venezuela was at one point a key stepping stone for cocaine heading to the United States via Central America, and how political, as well as criminal, connections facilitated that flow of drugs.

Even at the time, Texas physicians understood that the 2017-18 flu season was one for the books. But nobody knew just how bad it was until Thursday, when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new numbers.

Last winter, influenza and its complications killed more than 80,000 in the United States and hospitalized more than 900,000 — the highest totals for death and illness during a seasonal outbreak since CDC numbers on flu deaths were first reported in 1976. Previously, flu-related deaths had ranged from 12,000 in the 2011-12 season to the previous high of 56,000 in 2012-2013. The CDC figures are estimates based on statistical models.

The 180 children who died in 2017-2018 was also a new record, beating the old one of 171 set in 2012-2013. The majority of them were unvaccinated, CDC said.

In Texas, more than 11,000 people died from flu and its complications during the 2017-18 flu season, including 16 children, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) said.

Even before Thursday's announcement, CDC had branded 2017-2018 a "high severity season" based on anecdotal evidence and the data that was available. There were several reasons for that severity but perhaps the biggest was that last year's vaccine was not effective against all the strains that appeared. In a typical flu season, flu vaccine can be up to 40- to 60-percent effective.

The 2017-18 vaccine was 36-percent effective, one CDC study found.

There is a readily available drug which works well against early and mid-stage COVID infection. You can even buy it (cheap) from Amazon for your horses, although the FDA specifically warns against humans taking the packaging of the drug being sold for animals. Obviously humans have to be very careful scaling the dose from a 1250lb horse to a 170lb human, but otherwise, how can any risk compare with having to face the disease alone, with no effective antiviral? Although the FDA is aware of studies using the drug, it is not telling the public that Ivermectin is an apparently effective anti-COVID drug which has been approved by at least one other country (Peru) for use in COVID-19 therapy on an equivalent basis to HCQ. Ivermectin has been approved for use in humans for decades, being distributed for free by Merck in African and South American countries to fight parasitic diseases. It is approved in the USA to fight hair-lice in kids, and the same dose seems to be effective in COVID..

Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Michelle Obama’s nonprofit voter registration group, When We All Vote, is partnering with the hyper-partisan MoveOn.org to push mail-in voting for the 2020 election.

MoveOn revved up its campaign with Hanks, Wilson, and Obama with a message to its extensive email list calling for followers and supporters to sign a petition that the left-wing activist group promises to send to Congress.

“Join Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson by adding your name to fight for safe and fair elections,” the group tells email recipients.

MoveOn goes on to claim that the coronavirus has prompted the need for a countrywide expansion of voting by mail.

“With the threat of Covid-19 looming over the November election, Congress must act to ensure every American has the ability to cast their ballot safely and without unnecessary risk,” MoveOn says at its petition page. “Tell your elected officials to expand access to vote-by-mail, early voting, and online voter registration.”

House Resolution 6666 a devil of a COVID-19 government surveillance plot (the Trace Act)

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

A House resolution from Illinois Democrat Rep. Bobby Rush that would put Big Government in charge of tracking citizens’ movements as they relate to COVID-19 mitigation efforts — even sending health bureaucrats to “individuals’ residences,” “as necessary,” as the legislation states — has a most apt number: 6666.

Mark of the beast. Mark of the beast for a beastly, monstrously unconstitutional bill.

After all, what’s more devilishly un-American than launching one of the most massive government surveillance programs of private citizens in U.S. history, all under the guise of protecting people from the coronavirus?

That’s the “COVID-19 Testing, Reaching, And Contacting Everyone (TRACE) Act” in all its $100 billion grant giveaway glory.

According to H.R. 6666’s text: The taxpayer funds will be used to “trace and monitor the contacts of infected individuals, and to support the quarantine of such contacts, through mobile health units and, as necessary … at [citizens’] residences.”

That means government comes to your home, taps on your door and demands you take a COVID-19 test. And if you test positive, that means the government makes sure you stay at home. How? Good question. Good unanswered question. Good chillingly unclear question.

The top dogs at the Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are in control of disbursing the $100 billion to local governments to carry out the COVID-19 testing — more specifically, to “hire, train, compensate and pay the expenses of individuals” to staff mobile health units and to knock on citizens’ doors and to enforce compliance with quarantining.

It’s all for the good of the country, dontcha know.

“Reopening our economy and getting back to normal will be all but impossible if we do not step up our testing efforts and implement robust and widespread contact tracing,” Rush said in a statement on his House webpage. “The COVID-19 TRACE Act will allow us to do this by creating a $100 billion grant program for local organizations to hire, train and pay individuals and to purchase supplies to run mobile testing units and door-to-door outreach as is safe and necessary.”

Be afraid; be very afraid. The resolution has dozens of cosponsors.

This is nothing but a massive government surveillance program cloaked in a cure-the-coronavirus label.

A petition at Change.org to stop the nonsense has generated about 28,000 signatures. That’s pitifully low.

“HR 6666 violates inalienable rights to one’s person, home and property, to one’s life, freedoms, privacy and security,” the petition states. “It is a violation of the Fourth Amendment, as well as the First, Fifth, Eighth and Ninth amendments … It is an illegal act of forced medical treatment upon We the People and an invasion into our local communities … [it] grants the [feds] broad authority as to empower any ‘entity’ … to hunt down people with no reasonable suspicion of threat to public health … HR 6666 is unconstitutional, unacceptable and unlawful.”

Devilishly so.

H.R. 6666 takes COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, and turns it into a mass surveillance authority for government against society.

And it does it deceptively so, under the guise of providing a societal good. Be not fooled: As 2 Corinthians warns, “even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

This resolution, in America, has no right to see the light of day.

Biden on Tuesday morning claimed he knew “nothing” about the plot to target General Flynn during his appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

However, Biden backtracked after GMA host George Stephanopoulos reminded him that he was in the secret Oval Office meeting on January 5, 2017 when Barack Obama discussed the Flynn-Kislyak phone calls and potential Logan Act charge.

Biden let out a very audible sigh as Stephanopoulos began to ask him about Obamagate, the targeting of General Flynn and his knowledge/involvement.

“So, what did you know about those moves to investigate Michael Flynn, and was anything improper done?” Stephanopoulos asked Biden.

“I knew nothing about those moves to investigate Michael Flynn, number one. Number two, this is all about diversion!” Biden said as he himself diverted from the issue and went on a bizarre rant about the Coronavirus.

Stephanopoulos pressed Biden about the issue and reminded him that he was in the secret Oval Office meeting on January 5, 2017 when Barack Obama discussed Flynn and his calls with Kislyak.

“You were reported to be in a January 5th, 2017 meeting where you and the president were briefed on the FBI’s plan to question Michael Flynn over those conversations he had with the Russian Ambassador Kislyak,” Stephanopoulos said.

Biden tried to act stupid and said he was only aware the FBI asked for an investigation of Flynn: “That’s all I know about it” Biden said changing the subject once again to the Coronavirus.

Schumer tells Fauci before Senate coronavirus testimony: 'Let it rip'

In eager anticipation of the Senate's virtual hearings with four top doctors from President Trump's coronavirus task force, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., urged Dr. Anthony Fauci to "let it rip." Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is scheduled to testify for the first time before the Senate Health Committee on Tuesday about the way Trump has responded to the coronavirus pandemic. "Until now, we've mostly heard from the members of the coronavirus task force through the distorted lens of the White House press conference where the president often prevents them from answering fully, interrupts their response, or even contradicts their fact-based evidence," Schumer said on Monday. "This will be one of the first opportunities for Dr. Fauci to tell the American people the unvarnished truth without the president lurking over his shoulder. Dr. Fauci, let it rip," he added.

Fauci will be joined by Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Dr. Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration; and Adm. Brett P. Giroir, the assistant secretary for health. They will testify via teleconference due to social distancing restrictions put in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The need for a virtual conference became even more paramount after two White House staffers tested positive for coronavirus, and several members of Trump's task force including Fauci, Redfield and Hahn self-isolated or entered some form of quarantine themselves as a precautionary measure.

The New York Times reported late Monday that Fauci will warn that the country will risk "needless suffering and death" if it is opened up too quickly. “The major message that I wish to convey to the Senate HLP committee tomorrow is the danger of trying to open the country prematurely,” he wrote to reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg. “If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to: ‘Open America Again,’ then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal.”

The doctors' testimonies come after Trump barred them from appearing before the House committee and required clearance from the chief of staff Mark Meadows before appearing remotely for Senate hearings on Capitol Hill. Among the most anticipated lines of questioning as America moves to reopen the country state by state, will revolve around the availability of testing to make a return to normalcy feasible. Trump officials said Monday that more than 9 million tests have been administered in the U.S., but state lawmakers have lamented the need for more if they will allow residents to go back to work and reopen businesses in the near future.

Update (1040ET): Testifying virtually, Dr. Fauci delivered his opening statement, offering lawmakers a test of all the different efforts underway to find cures - using, in many cases, broad-spectrum antivirals - and vaccines. Notably, Dr. Fauci noted several caveats, one being that Gilead's remdesivir has proven to be a "modest success" by the results so far - it's not the 'game-changer' the market would like to believe. Dr. Fauci also noted that some of the vaccine trials could cause harm to test subjects, while listing at least 8 vaccines (including Moderna's) in some stage of development.

While he couldn't say much more at the moment, Dr. Fauci reiterated that he hopes to know more about the progress in developing a vaccine by late fall, or early winter.

Earlier, GOP Senator Lamar Alexander, of Tennessee, turned on Trump and warned that the US doesn't have enough tests to reopen, even as his home state trudges ahead with its gradual reopening. Alexander, the chairman of the Senate Health Committee, said the US doesn't have enough tests to reopen yet despite what Trump said about "prevailing" in the test ramp-up.

Dr. Fauci also emphasized the importance of testing, and warned states not to reopen "prematurely".

Senator Rand Paul told Anthony Fauci during a senate hearing on Tuesday that scientists should “have a little bit of humility” because they do not understand what is best for the economy.

In response, Fauci claimed that he “doesn’t give advice about anything other than public health.”

Sen. Paul critized Fauci during Tuesday’s Senate coronavirus response oversight hearing.

“I think we ought to have a little bit of humility in our belief that we know what’s best for the economy,” Paul said. “And as much as I respect you, Dr. Fauci, I don’t think you’re the end-all. I don’t think you’re the one person that gets to make a decision.”

Senator Paul, who caught the virus and quickly recovered, said that he believes there are ways to slow the spread while keeping the economy going.

“We’re opening up a lot of economies around the U.S., and I hope that people who are predicting doom and gloom and saying, ‘Oh, we can’t do this’ … will admit that they were wrong if there isn’t a surge because I think that’s what’s going to happen,” Paul added.

The Kentucky senator added that they have had fewer deaths in his state than they do during a normal flu season.

“In rural states — we never really reached any sort of pandemic levels in Kentucky and other states. We have less deaths in Kentucky than we have in an average flu season.”

In response, Fauci said “I have never made myself out to be the end all, and only voice in this. I’m a scientist, a physician, and a public health official. I give advice according to the best scientific evidence.”

Sen. Paul had also noted that the infection rate is low in children, so it may be time to consider reopening schools, which Fauci pushed back on.

As Fed Recoils From NIRP Trump Says US Should "Accept" Negative Rates, "Boxing In" Powell

There is a bevy of Fed speakers on deck today, all with a simple agenda of refuting last week's historic move in Eurodollars which pushed forward fed fund rates negative as soon as November, to wit:

BULLARD: NEGATIVE RATES NOT GOOD OPTION FOR U.S.

KAPLAN: 'I WOULD BE AGAINST NEGATIVE INTEREST RATES'

KASHKARI: FED POLICYMAKERS HAVE BEEN 'PRETTY UNANIMOUS' IN OPPOSING NEGATIVE INTEREST RATES

Chicago Fed president Charles Evens put the issue to rest saying "at best, we’d have to study it more, but I don’t anticipate that being a tool we would be using in the US" confirming the Fed isn't anticipating the use of negative rates (of course, the Fed wasn't anticipating $7 trillion in QE just two months ago; in fact one can argue that anything the Fed agrees on - publicly - will be wrong).

And yet, just as one Fed president after another recoiled at the thought of NIRP , Trump just threw the Fed for a loop when he tweeted that "as long as other countries are receiving the benefits of Negative Rates, the USA should also accept the “GIFT”. Big numbers!"

We can only assume that the president is referring to the stock market reaction as the "big numbers" that NIRP would unleash, although Trump should probably check his assumptions: for an economy that is as financialized as the US, where almost 80% of all assets are financial and/or market-related and contingent on a properly functioning financial sector, negative rates would throw everything for a loop. Just see the banana continent that is Europe.

In any case, now that the debate has shifted squarely to if and when negative rates are coming, this discussion too has now been politicized, with the president taking the side of market speculators.

HR 6666 The TRES Act was just proposed in Congress. This Act will allow government officials to enter ANYONE'S HOME and force Test them for COVID-19/ and or antibodies. Then the government officials would have the right to remove children from the home/ remove anyone testing positive from the home, etc.

I can't imagine how removing someone from their home is going to protect anyone. I have a husband with Alzheimer's Disease. I don't have Covid19 but if I tested positive who would take care of my husband if I were removed from my home? Italy: Balkan route seeing increasing migrant traffic despite lockdowns

The route which illegal migrants often take to enter the European Union member states through the Balkans has been seeing increased traffic as the spring weather settles in. Migrants are continuing to flow in spite of border closures and national lockdowns in response to the ongoing Wuhan coronavirus pandemic.

Ports in Italy have been forced to take in migrants for “humanitarian reasons” in recent weeks despite the country’s announcement that it would not take in any more due to the pandemic, as previously reported by Voice of Europe. But migrants are crossing into Italy by land as well.

Migrants typically cross into northern Italy overland through Slovenia, arriving in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The regional government has reported a “notable upturn” in migrant traffic in recent weeks, with more than 150 migrants coming to the region’s capital, Trieste, in a one-week period in late April and early May alone, according to a report by InfoMigrants.

Trieste’s authorities say that the city’s four migrant reception centres are already being overwhelmed. Tents have been set up for migrants on the outskirts of the city since there is no more space for new arrivals in the existing facilities.

Adding to the city’s challenges is the need to provide enough space for migrants so that they can practice social distancing measures, particularly during the mandated 15-day period of quarantine that they must enter upon arrival. This poses an even greater challenge to the city’s already overstretched resources.

And the increasing numbers of migrants indicate that the trend is increasing rather than decreasing. In January, 388 migrants came to Friuli Venezia Giulia, as opposed to 270 in January 2019. The numbers in the following months were somewhat lower than during the same period last year, but “recently the trend has definitely gone back to increasing,” Valerio Valenti, a representative of the regional government, said.

“It would be appropriate to restart dialogue with the Slovenian government [concerning migrants,” regional Councillor for Security Pierpaolo Roberti said.

Gretchen Whitmer Lashes out at Michiganders: Lockdown ‘Not Optional,’ Orders ‘Not Suggestions’

As Michiganders continue to defy her orders, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lashed out at residents on Monday, saying the coronavirus lockdown is “not optional.”

Whitmer was asked about business owners and residents “doubting” her authority to enforce executive orders.

She claimed to know how “frustrating” the situation is, before cautioning “I expect people to follow the law.

“These executive orders are not a suggestion. They’re not optional. They’re not helpful hints.”

Owosso barber Karl Manke has become a like folk hero in the movement to reopen the state. The 77-year-old Manke has refused to close his shop, despite repeated orders to do so.

“He just wants to work,” Manke’s attorney, David Kallman, said, according to the Lansing State Journal.

“And he wants to do it in a safe and responsible way.”

The Michigan attorney general sought a temporary retraining order against Manke on behalf of Whitmer, but was denied by a Shiawassee County judge.

Circuit Court Judge Matthew Stewart refused to sign the order before a hearing.

Meanwhile, Shiawassee County Sheriff Brian BeGole said his department would not enforce Whitmer’s orders.

“With limited resources, staffing and facilities, our priority focus will be on enforcing duly passed laws for the protection of Shiawassee County citizens,” BeGole wrote in a public letter.

“I have decided, within my authority, that our office cannot and will not divert our primary resources and efforts towards enforcement of the Governor Whitmer’s executive orders.”

Salvini Slams Italian Government For Giving Publicity and Cash To Terrorist Group

Populist Senator Matteo Salvini has slammed the Italian government for handing over millions of euros and giving publicity to Somalian terrorist group al-Shabab for the return of kidnapped aid worker Silvia Romano.

Senator Salvini commented on the case saying,” Yesterday was Mother’s Day, it was the feast of joy for Silvia Romano’s family, but then some questions must certainly be answered.”

“I remember softly that the money for the ransom would have been collected by a terrorist association that killed thousands of people with attacks and car bombs,” he said in a radio interview Monday, Il Giornale reports.

“If I had been in government I would have kept a lower profile, a more sober return would have avoided free publicity for those infamous people who killed so many people in the name of religion,” Salvini added.

Giorgia Meloni, a close ally of Salvini and leader of the national-conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI), agreed with the League (Lega) leader and said, “it would be a tragedy if the message passed along is that kidnapping Italians can be vaguely profitable.”

“Instead we need to give the absolutely clear signal that kidnapping Italians is not a good idea, otherwise we obviously risk thousands of our compatriots around the world being seen as a good deal,” she said.

Ms Romano, who was kidnapped in Kenya in 2018 and returned to Italy on Sunday, revealed that she had also converted to Islam while a captive of the radical Islamic terrorist group upon her return to her home country.

Romano explained that she had changed her name to “Aisha” and insisted that her conversion to Islam had been of her own accord and she had not been forced by her captors.

“I was always in a room alone, I slept on the floor on some sheets. They didn’t beat me and I never suffered violence,” she said and added, ” wasn’t forced to do anything. They gave me food and when they entered the room the kidnappers always had their faces covered. They spoke in a language I don’t know, I believe in a dialect.”

The case bears similarity to that of Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout, who also converted to Islam after being kidnapped in Somalia in August of 2008.

Lindhout, by contrast, had been victim of sexual and physical violence by her captors. Ali Omar Ader, the main figure behind her kidnapping was later arrested in 2015 and sentenced 15 years in prison for his role in the affair.

The disgraced former CEO last month became the proud new owner of the gargantuan Bellagio estate, near the elite East Gate Bel Air neighborhood, complete with an impressive 7,000-bottle wine cellar and two swimming pools.

The extravagant sale comes as Uber became one of the latest business casualties of the coronavirus pandemic last week, when thousands of workers learned they had lost their jobs via a three-minute Zoom call.

Kalanick was ousted as CEO from the firm in 2017 and then left the board of directors in December 2019 - at the same time that he offloaded his entire stake in Uber, netting more than $2.7 billion in the process.

Records show the signatory on the deed was CloudKitchens founder Diego Berdakin, leading to initial reports that Berdakin was the buyer but the Journal has learned Kalanick is the new homeowner. It was sold by a limited liability company tied to real-estate investor Christopher Cole - which bought the property for $38 million in 2015.

Before this, the estate was also home to late NFL team owner Georgia Frontiere between the 1970s and 2005.

The grand estate was designed by architect Paul Williams and boasts a home of about 20,000 square feet set within almost two acres of land.

The new homeowner can enjoy the newly renovated interiors, after a three-year project updated the home giving it an opulent minimalism theme before it was put on the market last year.

It boasts living space across multiple wings, seven bedrooms, and two separate gated and camera-secured entrances.

The baronial master bedroom alone dwarfs the size of an average American home at 2,500 square feet, including its own sitting area, dual spa-style bathtubs and dual showroom closets.

Chinese professor Xu Zhangrun is one of many citizens arrested after publishing criticism of Xi Jinping on his handling of the crisis. The government deemed such criticism to be fake news causing panic. It has censored accounts of its concealing the source of the original outbreak, including censorship on popular Chinese apps such as WeChat.

WASHINGTON — Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt urged public leaders to speak out forcefully against anti-Semitism and warned of extremists exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to target Jews and spread hateful ideologies, after data released Tuesday that showed more anti-Semitic incidents in 2019 than any other year over the last four decades.

In a virtual press conference with reporters, Greenblatt cast a sobering message that “violent anti-Semitism has become all too commonplace,” noting new statistics compiled by the New York-based organization that found 2,107 anti-Semitic incidents in 2019, including 61 physical assault cases, 1,127 instances of harassment and 919 acts of vandalism.

President Donald Trump last month ordered meat processing plants across the US to remain open to protect the nation's food supply but an analysis of government data has shown the plants have increasingly been exporting to China while Americans face shortages.

Processors including Smithfield Foods, owned by China's WH Group Ltd, Brazilian-owned JBS USA and Tyson Foods Inc temporarily closed about 20 meat plants in the US as the virus infected thousands of employees.

Nineteen states have reported COVID-19 cases at 115 meat and poultry processing facilities as of last month. Among about 130,000 workers at the facilities, at least 5,000 have been infected and 20 have died.

The closures and slowdown in production have reduced pork slaughter capacity by about 35 to 40 percent and beef slaughter capacity by about 30 to 40 percent, according to the US Department of Agriculture.

The closures of the plants prompted meatpackers and grocers to warn of shortages.

Trump Moves to Halt $4.5bn in Federal Pension Investments in Chinese Stocks

The news comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and China over the origins of the new coronavirus and response to the outbreak.

The Trump administration has ordered the prevention of federal retirement assets from being invested in Chinese equities, according to documents obtained by Fox Business.

Fox published a copy of a letter on Monday, in which two top White House officials, Robert O’Brien and Larry Kudlow, tell Labour Secretary Eugene Scalia that the administration wants the Thrift Savings Plan to call off directing $4.5 billion, citing "significant and unnecessary economic risk".

The Thrift Savings Plan is a 401(k)-style retirement savings programme for federal employees and members of the military. It was scheduled to start transferring its international fund in June into a portfolio that mirrors the global benchmark MSCI All Country World Index.

The latter captures equities in dozens of developed and emerging markets worldwide, including in China. It was reported in April that the White House came under pressure from Republicans to halt federal pension investments in Chinese companies like ZTE and Hikvision, which are on the US trade blacklist.

O’Brien and Kudlow wrote in the letter that the grounds for holding back the funds were the alleged violation of US sanctions laws by Chinese companies and China's "culpable actions" regarding the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Departing from the Board’s established index for the International Stock Investment Fund (I Fund) to track one that maintains Chinese equities is risky and unjustified," they said.

In a second letter published by Fox, Labour Secretary Scalia asked the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, which runs the fund, to confirm the move by Wednesday.

It comes as tensions have grown between the United States and China over the COVID-19 pandemic. The Trump administration, including the President himself, has claimed that China was covering up the severity of the situation at the onset of the pandemic and had accidentally released the coronavirus from a bioresearch lab in Wuhan. China denies those claims.

Amid the spat, Donald Trump suggested on Friday that he could tear apart his hard-fought trade deal with China, which marked a partial truce to an 18-month trade war. He has earlier also threatened to impose new tariffs in retaliation for the pandemic, which has caused more than 80,000 deaths in the United States and caused a sharp economic downturn, potentially damaging Trump's prospects for re-election later this year.

House Democrats unveil $3 trillion coronavirus relief package

House Democrats on Tuesday unveiled their latest round of legislation to provide Americans with economic relief from the coronavirus pandemic.

The House is expected to pass the $3 trillion bill on Friday along party lines as Democrats seek to put pressure on Republicans to start negotiations for additional measures to contain the impact of the outbreak on workers.

The legislation provides additional funding for food assistance and state and local governments, among other provisions.

Senate Republicans and the White House have called for a "pause" before taking up additional legislation so lawmakers can review the impact of already-allocated coronavirus relief funds.

The House is also expected to vote Friday on rules changes to allow lawmakers to vote remotely and conduct committee work virtually. House Democrats are planning to vote on permitting proxy voting, which would allow absent lawmakers to authorize colleagues physically present in the Capitol to cast votes on their behalf.

A bipartisan task force has been discussing options for the House to operate during the pandemic, but so far no agreement has been reached. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), a member of the task force, told reporters on Tuesday that Democrats will still move forward with the rules changes even if they can't come to a bipartisan agreement.

"I've indicated that if we can't reach agreement that we will nevertheless present a path forward to ensure the Congress can do its duties," Hoyer said.

Afghan military officials are playing up the growing number of Taliban attacks in border provinces, something the Pentagon had similarly claimed. They are adding a detail, claiming that the Taliban are fighting alongside al-Qaeda and Jaish-e Mohammad (JeM).

Though the Taliban had past ties to al-Qaeda, they were never directly reported to be aligned with JeM. The US-Taliban peace deal obliged the Taliban to sever all ties to al-Qaeda, and these contacts could be interpreted, if true, as a violation.

The US is already treating the putative increase in attacks as a violation, and Afghan officials who are not keen to see the peace deal survive are probably counting on that in these latest claims, hoping this will add to the growing mistrust.

The Food and Drug Administration has fast-tracked one biotechnology company’s in-development coronavirus vaccine. Massachusetts-based Moderna Inc. confirmed the news on Tuesday and said that it expects the vaccine to enter late-study early in the summer.

Moderna has received $500 million in federal funding to develop a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19.

No vaccine or treatment had been approved for widespread use, but numerous companies have been racing to create them. Vaccines can sometimes take decades to make it from concept to market, but the enormity of the current pandemic has expedited the process considerably.

The FDA’s fast-track designation will speed up the review processes for Moderna’s experimental vaccine. According to Forbes, the company is utilizing new biotechnology known as “mRNA,” or “mRNA,” which, in effect tells cells which proteins to produce. It is believed that this new technique will make the vaccines quicker, safer and more effective.

In anticipation of successful human trials and the vaccine's approval for production, Moderna has partnered with Swiss vaccine-manufacturer Lonza. The first batches are planned to go into production in July with as many as a billion doses being planned in the long-term.

Moderna was founded in 2010 with the stated intention of discovering and development applications for mRNA. To date, it did not have a product reach clinical trials, let alone to the market.

On Monday, the foreign ministers of Greece, Cyprus, France, the UAE and Egypt held a conference call, during which they denounced Turkey’s drilling activities in the eastern Mediterranean, as well as its military operations in Libya, conducted under a deal with the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA). Ankara rushed to respond.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy accused five countries, Greece, Cyprus, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and France, of creating “regional chaos” in the eastern Mediterranean, while trying to form the “alliance of evil”, after the foreign ministers of these states jointly slammed Turkey’s activities in the region, Associated Press reported.

“We call on these countries to act in line with common sense, international laws and practices”, the spokesman said on Tuesday, as quoted by AP. “Peace and stability in the region can be established with sincere and genuine dialogue, not through alliances of evil”.

Aksoy also accused France of “patronising” the purported alliance, while slamming the UAE for “hostility” against Turkey and insisting that both Greece and Cyprus were undermining Ankara’s attempts to have a constructive dialogue.

The spokesman’s comments came following the teleconference between the foreign ministers of five states on Monday, during which they discussed Turkey’s drilling activities in the disputed offshore area near Cyprus, as well as its military activities in Libya.

Ankara does not recognise the government of the Republic of Cyprus and is the only state in the world to recognise the existence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, following the island's split in 1974.

Last year, it signed a deal on maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean Sea and agreement on military cooperation with the internationally-recognised and UN-backed Libyan government. The border delineation agreement was deemed “illegal” by some nations, including Egypt, as Turkey moved forward with gas drilling activities in the disputed zone of eastern Mediterranean, something which is strongly objected to by Greece and Cyprus, as the latter argues that it has exclusive economic rights in the area.

New Normal: California Gov. Newsom to Give $75 Million to Illegals for Coronavirus Relief – Without Legislative Approval

Finally, a man who understands the new normal. California Governor Gavin Newsom.

He understands that the new normal means government by fiat and executive decree.

But there are always carping critics.

Judicial Watch, for instance, filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California County of Los Angeles on behalf of two California taxpayers, Robin Crest and Howard Myers, asking the court to stop the state from expending $75 million of taxpayer funds to provide direct cash assistance to unlawfully present aliens (Crest et al. v. Newsom et al. (No. 20STCV16321)).

The lawsuit alleges Governor Newsom overstepped his authority and violated federal law when, without affirmative state legislative approval, he took executive action to create the “Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants Project” and provide cash benefits to illegal aliens who are otherwise ineligible for state or federal unemployment insurance or other benefits.

The reason they cannot get state or federal monies for coronavirus is, unfortunately, due solely to the fact that they are in the USA unlawfully.

That is they sneaked in without bothering to go through immigration – or they stayed after they agreed to leave when they were first permitted to come here.

But no matter, on April 15, 2020, Governor Newsom announced his new executive initiative – which is to provide direct assistance in the form of cash benefits to some 150,000 illegal aliens in the state he now runs.

The money will come from taxpayers in the state.

The initiative, known as the “Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants Project,” would spend $75 million to provide direct cash payments to illegal aliens and cost an additional $4.8 million to administer.

Governor Newsom’s executive initiative would provide one-time cash benefits of $500 per adult / $1,000 per household to 150,000 unlawfully present aliens in California. These benefits are not provided to U.S. citizens residing in the state.

You have to be illegally in the US to qualify.

Under federal immigration law, 8 U.S.C. § 1621(a), unlawfully present aliens generally are ineligible for State or local public benefits. Section 1621(d) requires a state legislature to enact a state law which affirmatively provides for such benefits for illegal aliens:

A State may provide that an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States is eligible for any State or local public benefit … only through the enactment of a State law … which affirmatively provides for such eligibility.

The lawsuit alleges that the California State Legislature has not enacted any law that affirmatively provides that unlawfully present aliens are eligible for the $75 million of cash public benefits announced by Newsom.

In order to get the illegals $75 million, it will cost the state almost $5 million to administer the funds.

Body found in Hermann Park lake identified as exiled Iranian activist

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) - A body found in McGovern Lake at Hermann Park on last week has been identified as a political activist and human rights advocate from Iran.

Someone in the park spotted the body of Ali Ajami, 37, floating around 10:00 a.m. on May 6.

Ajami was sentenced to two years in prison, according to his friend, for protesting a presidential election in 2009. From there, he was exiled from his home country, went to Turkey and then moved to the U.S.

An autopsy will be performed to determine how Ajami died.

The detective on the case said there is no sign of foul play or serious injury to his body. He went on to tell ABC13 that Ajami was on medication for depression.

Megachurch Pastor Darrin Patrick Dies in Possible Suicide at 49

Megachurch pastor Darrin Patrick died at age 49 on Friday, according to a statement released by Seacoast Church.

The statement explains that while no official cause of death has been released, his death appears to have been self-inflicted.

n 2016, Patrick was removed from church leadership at Journey and from his role as vice-president of the Acts 29 church planting network for a “historical pattern of sin” and an emotional affair.

Though Patrick’s death has not yet been confirmed as suicide, he is not the only pastor to have died by suicide. In September of last year, megachurch pastor and mental health advocate Jarrid Wilson ended his life.

Internal assessment concluded UK government's covert support of 'moderate opposition' was shallow, lacked coherence and cost lives

The UK’s covert propaganda programmes in war-torn Syria were poorly planned, probably illegal and cost lives, according to a scathing internal review of the initiative that has been seen by Middle East Eye.

Using news agencies, social media, poster campaigns and even children’s comics, communications companies working under contract to the British government attempted to undermine both the Assad government and the Islamic State group and bolster elements within the Syrian opposition.

The UK embarked on its propaganda efforts in the country in 2012 and stepped them up dramatically the following year as the government sought to maintain a strategic foothold after parliament had voted against any British military intervention in the conflict.

The series of programmes was given the codename Operation Volute, and those involved in the work talked not of propaganda, but of “strategic communications”, or “SC”.

However, a review that was conducted during the summer of 2016 concluded that the “fundamental shortcomings” of the initiative included “no conflict analysis [and] no target audience analysis”.

I was the first to endorse President Donald J. Trump, even when many thought I was nuts to do so. I helped Trump win and traveled the country with him, embedded in his campaign. I am one of the architects of his agenda, and I was pushing his agenda even before he ran for office.

I have remained faithful to the President and his agenda. I have always stood up for him, and I never backed down, not even for one moment. My convictions are immovable, built on rock, not sand.

As the world knows, the President disagreed with me on recusal, but I did what the law required me to do. I was a central figure in the campaign and was also a subject of and witness in the investigation and could obviously not legally be involved in investigating myself. If I had ignored and broken the law, the Democrats would have used that to severely damage the President.

Some have asked, why take the job as Attorney General if I knew I would have to recuse myself from the investigation? I knew no such thing. I wasn’t informed of Comey’s secret investigation until after I became Attorney General, and the investigation wasn’t publicly confirmed by the FBI until weeks after my recusal.

Knowing of the President’s disagreement with my decision, I tendered my resignation in writing the morning after Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel. But President Trump chose not to accept it, and he asked me to continue to serve as his Attorney General and to help him “Make America Great Again.”

The investigation was a disruptive and prolonged fiasco for America and especially for President Trump, and a massive waste of money chasing the deep-state myth of Russian collusion. Recently disclosed documents also reveal the extent of former FBI Director James Comey’s underhanded efforts to undermine our President.

One thing you may not know is that I advised from the beginning of the administration that Comey should be removed and the FBI given a fresh start. I concluded that Comey was driven by ego, lacked self-discipline, and lacked the judgement necessary to lead an agency as critical as the FBI, as was evidenced by the completely improper way he declined to prosecute Hillary Clinton.

The end result of the Mueller investigation is that the President (and I) were fully exonerated, so much so that the subsequent Ukraine impeachment witch hunt did not even mention the phony Russian collusion idea.

My principles, like my faith, are immovable and non-negotiable. I believe it is always right to do the right thing. My opponent, Tommy Tuberville, calls that weakness, which reveals his true lack of integrity.

True strength and courage are found in the determination to do the right thing, even when you know the consequences may be painful. Eric Eggers: ‘Fair to Assume’ Illegal Aliens Will Get Mail-in Ballots in California

Government Accountability Institute Research Director Eric Eggers, author of Fraud: How the Left Plans to Steal the Next Election, says it is “fair to assume” that many illegal aliens will receive mail-in ballots in California for the 2020 election thanks to a plan by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).

In an exclusive interview with SiriusXM Patriot’s Breitbart News Tonight, Eggers said California’s automatic voter registration coupled with providing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens opens its elections to a host of fraud.

That fraud, Eggers expects, will be exacerbated by Newsom’s statewide mail-in voting plan for the 2020 election.

“This is really where the left shows a level of hypocrisy, which they’re not regularly held to account,” Eggers said. “What if the ballots go to illegal immigrants that willingly or unwillingly ended up on the voter rolls and maybe they just don’t even know they’re not supposed to be casting ballots? Because remember, elsewhere in California and elsewhere nationally, it is legal for noncitizens to vote in certain local elections.”

“Basically, what you’ve got is this hodgepodge of a lack of oversight, lacks regulation, and confusion by the general public,” Eggers said. “And oh, by the way, there’s a global pandemic, so many people are focused on other things at the moment. And so … here come all the ballots, and yes, many of the people that will get the ballots will be legal voters, but many of those ballots will end up somewhere other than in the hands of legal [voters], and that’s exactly where the recipe for fraud can occur.”

“The only person standing in between a noncitizen or an illegal alien just getting their driver’s license and the voter rolls is a DMV employee,” Eggers said. “You’ve got these people … often times are confused or coerced by political operatives and told to register to vote. … The DMV officials are prohibited by law from giving real guidance on should you check the box and register to vote or not.”

“You’ve got this system where you know you’ve got over a million illegal immigrants in California that have driver’s licenses,” Eggers continued. “I think it’s fair to assume that a good number of those inadvertently or intentionally ended up on the voter rolls, and those people are about to be receiving a mail-in ballot.”

Eggers noted that Los Angeles County, California, was found to have about 1.5 million more registered voters on its voter rolls than eligible voting-age citizens. About 348 counties in the U.S. have more registered voters on their voter rolls than even possible.

Likewise, California has previously had a voter registration rate of over 100 percent, indicating more registered voters on voter rolls than those eligible to vote in the state.

Statistics cited by the U.S. Supreme Court, Eggers said, reveal that about 1-in-8 voter registrations, or 24 million, are significantly flawed. Under a mail-in voting system, every one of those flawed voter registrations would receive ballots.

As Newsom suspends in-person voting for the 2020 election, Eggers said the state will still allow ballot harvesting — the process where political operatives can collect voters’ ballots and deliver them to polling stations.

Eggers said California’s ballot harvesting helped flip seven congressional seats in 2018 from Republican to Democrat in and around the Los Angeles area.

“We haven’t suspended [ballot harvesting] in the name of safety,” Eggers said.

China has been accused of engaging in a “bastard act” against Australia, with one MP slamming the country’s actions as “bullying and coercion”.

China has been accused of engaging in “a bastard act” after it banned Australian beef exports before appearing to link the move directly with Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s inquiry into COVID-19.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian blamed the ban on violations of quarantine rules on Tuesday night, before promptly warning Australia it could face retaliation over the push for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus.

“Chinese customs has continuously found that multiple batches of beef products exported to China by individual Australian companies have violated the inspection and quarantine requirements,’’ he said.

When asked by an Australian journalist if he was linking the beef ban and the inquiry, he replied, “I just made it very clear”.

“They are two different things, you’re making a political interpretation”.

But Liberal-Nationals MP George Christensen said it was clear enough what was going on.

“It’s a bastard act,’’ he told news.com.au.

“My understanding is it’s about a third of Australia’s meat exports to China.

“It’s just wrong. China has just gone into full, bullying, threatening, coercion mode. That’s what I think.

The Queensland MP said China had questions to answer on the spread of the coronavirus.

But rather than engage in a “tit for tat” diplomatic debate he urged Australia to use the Chinese-owned Port of Darwin as a bargaining chip.

“There’s a lot of questions being raised now about the Port of Darwin,’’ he said.

“There is a clear clause in it that says at any point in time it’s deemed to be a national security issue that contract is null and void

“They are positioning themselves directly against us and against our national interests. Certainly, there are bargaining chips out there, like the Port of Darwin.”

Earlier, Mr Christensen told Parliament: “We can keep giving into Communist China’s threats, or we can stand up for our sovereignty and our economic independence.”

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has struck a deal with a Chinese biotechnology company developing one of the “most advanced” vaccine candidates against the novel coronavirus to produce and test in Canada.

A vaccine named Ad5-nCoV, which may prove effective against Covid-19, has been developed by China’s CanSino Biologics company together with the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology, part of the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences. It was already approved for the first phase of clinical trials in China in mid-March and is now expected to be tested in Canada too.

The NRC, the Canadian government’s leading research and development agency, has announced it will cooperate with CanSino to “advance bioprocessing and clinical development” of the potential vaccine. BlackRock Begins Buying Junk Bond ETFs for the Fed Today: It’s Already at Work for the Central Bank of Israel

It’s off to the races today for BlackRock. The New York Fed, with authority from the Federal Reserve Board and backstopped with taxpayers’ money, will begin the first phase of the Fed’s unprecedented leap into shoring up the sagging prices of investment grade corporate debt and junk bonds. BlackRock has been selected by the New York Fed to be the investment manager for these bailout facilities and will begin Phase I today by buying up Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) containing investment grade corporate bonds as well as junk bonds. Making the situation particularly dicey is that BlackRock just happens to be one of the largest purveyors of said ETFs.

The screaming conflict-of-interest that this raises in the minds of many is not ruffling any feathers at the New York Fed (which is itself a bundle of conflicts wrapped in a fraud monetization spigot that creates money out of thin air.) The New York Fed has swiftly dismissed this problem with the following language in its Investment Management Agreement with BlackRock:

“The Manager shall treat BlackRock-sponsored ETFs on the same neutral footing as ETFs sponsored by other entities…If the holdings of BlackRock-sponsored ETFs by the Company at any time exceeds or is expected to exceed the then-current market share of BlackRock-sponsored ETFs in the corporate bond ETF market on average (calculated with reference to the most recently ended calendar month), the Manager will notify the Company and consult with the FRBNY, as managing member of the Company, to review the holdings of the Company and implement such adjustments as the FRBNY may direct.”

The New York Fed’s answer to teetering highly-leveraged corporate debt is to set up a highly-leveraged bailout facility run by Wall Street insider, BlackRock, which is also managing U.S. securities purchases for the central bank of Israel.

The stimulus bill known as the CARES Act allocated $454 billion of taxpayers’ money to effectively bail out all of the New York Fed’s bad supervisory decisions over the past decade. The $454 billion has been designated as “loss absorbing capital” to soak up the first 10 to 25 percent of losses in the Fed’s alphabet soup list of bailout facilities. The New York Fed will use $75 billion of the $454 billion for its two corporate bond buying programs, the Primary Market Corporate Credit Facility and the Secondary Market Corporate Credit Facility. Those programs will be leveraged by an approximate factor of 10 to 1 to create $750 in corporate bond bailouts. Given the size of the corporate bond problem, we strongly suspect that’s just the beginning.

"For three years former national security adviser Michael Flynn was put through a legal and financial wringer by top officials within the FBI, including its then-director, James Comey.

The FBI investigation threatened to destroy Flynn’s career, finances, and life, as, according to the New York Post, agents tried to get Flynn to lie “so they could ‘prosecute him or get him fired,’ when questioning him about Russian contacts.”

Finally, in an effort to protect his son from indictment in the Russia collusion scandal, Flynn pled guilty twice to lying to the FBI over a phone conversation he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak during the presidential transition in late 2016 concerning “possible ties between the Trump campaign and Russia’s 2016 election interference.”

Flynn later sought to withdraw his guilty plea after new evidence emerged that revealed FBI wrongdoing.

In documents filed with the court, the Department of Justice said the FBI’s interview of Flynn was “untethered to and unjustified by, the FBI’s counterintelligence investigations into Mr. Flynn.” Further, it said, the interview of Flynn was not “conducted with a legitimate investigative basis.”

That could be said not only about the phony Russia “collusion” narrative, but also the Steele dossier, which the FBI reportedly knew was bogus before a FISA warrant was sought. That warrant allowed agents to spy on the Trump campaign and transition team, culminating in the impeachment fiasco led by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

The DOJ filing is, as a Wall Street Journal editorial headline put it, a “vindication of Michael Flynn.”

But, as former Secretary of Labor Raymond Donovan said after his acquittal in 1987 of fraud and grand larceny charges: “The question is, should this indictment have ever been brought? Which office do I go to get my reputation back? Who will reimburse my company for the economic jail it has been in for two and a half years?”"

Huawei has come under increased scrutiny by the Trump administration for the company’s extensive ties to the Chinese Communist Party. The administration has sought to block its 5G tech from being used in domestic networks due to concerns over spying and the theft of intellectual property from American competitors. The DOJ in January opened a 13-count indictment against Huawei, saying that it has engaged in a “decades-long” operation to “misappropriate intellectual property” from U.S. technology firms. It has also been accused of developing the monitoring system for Chinese Uyghur internment camps and selling U.S. tech to Iran in violation of sanctions.

The Chinese government has repeatedly spread misinformation about the coronavirus and tried to cover up its culpability for the spread of the deadly disease. Chinese government officials have even promoted a conspiracy theory alleging that the coronavirus was actually brought to the city of Wuhan by members fo the U.S. military. CNN has also come under fire for allegations of publishing Chinese propaganda. Last month, it published a story on the People’s Liberation Army while citing Chinese state controlled media as its source.

Justice Department reviewing ‘unmasking,’ but source suggests decision on releasing files is DNI's 'call'

The Justice Department has been reviewing the unmasking of U.S. officials as part of its broader examination of the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation, and is now taking a look at files on the subject that acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell delivered to the DOJ last week, Fox News has learned.

As Fox News previously reported, Grenell made the decision to declassify information about Obama administration officials who were involved in the “unmasking” of former White House National Security Adviser Michael Flynn — whose calls with the former Russian ambassador during the presidential transition were picked up in surveillance and later leaked.

“To the extent that this information is related to any open investigation we will be taking a close look at it," a DOJ official said.

However, tensions appear to be emerging between the ODNI and DOJ over who should make the call on whether to actually release the documents shared by Grenell.

The DOJ official told Fox News that the Justice Department currently has no plans to release that list of names.

"The Justice Department is confused as to where the idea that we would be releasing this information came from, given that ODNI is the owner of that information, if they want to release it they can do it, that's their call," the DOJ official told Fox News.

The Justice Department was consulted on the issue because the intelligence community does not necessarily have total authority over its own information when it comes to releasing it to the public. Any U.S. government intelligence that is released lawfully to the American public is supposed to first undergo review either by the DOJ or by the president. It is illegal to release unmasked intelligence information for political gain.

L.A. County stay-at-home order likely to be extended through July to fight coronavirus

Los Angeles County’s stay-at-home orders will “with all certainty” be extended for the next three months, county Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer acknowledged during a Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.

Ferrer said that would only change if there was a “dramatic change to the virus and tools at hand.”

“Our hope is that by using the data, we’d be able to slowly lift restrictions over the next three months,” she said. But without widely available therapeutic testing for the coronavirus or rapid at-home tests that would allow people to test themselves daily, it seems unlikely that restrictions would be completely eased.

Ferrer made the comments as the board debated whether to extend the county’s eviction moratorium for one to three months.

Democrats Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders want to give $2000 per month to almost every person in America, including children and those with no SS#. Payments would be retroactive to March, and extend three months beyond the date that the pandemic is officialy declared finished by the Health Department. (Who knows when that will be, if ever.)

It sounds like any individual who reports (not necessarily earns, but reports as net income), less than $120K/yr would qualify, whether a citizen or not. Apparently, married couples with 3 children would receive $10,000 per month. That's $120K/yr for a household, while the average combined income for a household is around $55K/yr.

Personally, I desperately need something like this, and I'll lose everything without it, but surely they will try to use this as an evil part of their plan. Are they basically buying votes for the presidential election? Are they trying to attact immigrants to come live here and be paid more money than they've ever seen, to do nothing but be in the country and vote Democrat? Will Dems try to get most people living entirely on govt pay, then eventually require that you be tracked, monitored, and continually behaving in an approved manner in order to keep receiving the money you need to eat and to not lose your house & car?

The projection contained the words “CCP Virus”. The Anti-Totalitarian Chinese Alliance is a group dedicated to fighting against the Chinese Communist Party’s regime, and was founded by activist Alston Kwan. Kwan posted the images on Twitter late Sunday night with the caption: “Raising our country’s prestige with hot words on the wall.”

The image was projected to protest against China’s handling of the CCP’s coronavirus and its oppressive communist leadership, according a report by Taiwan News. Kwan has previously used the consulate as a canvas to project images of detained human rights activist Liu Xiaobo and human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, both of whom were arrested and imprisoned for speaking out against the CCP. The incident comes amidst a rise in tensions between the Chinese government and its citizens as China’s leadership fears a rise in social unrest among its citizens threatening the stability of the country. Protests have previously broken out in the Chinese province of Hubei, where the virus first originated, as residents engaged in a stand-off with police which later escalated into a full-scale riot. Protests also broke out in Hong Kong on Sunday as hundreds of residents came out to attend pro-democracy rallies and protest China’s mishandling of the coronavirus.

"As the United States meat industry has been struck from all sides amid the coronavirus pandemic, a long-languishing bipartisan bill is gaining momentum as a possible solution to keeping small farmers afloat, feeding families, and halting the wasteful slaughter of countless numbers of cattle.

"What this legislation would do is expand the exemptions and make it easier (for small farmers) to sell to places like grocery stores and restaurants," Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) – who first introduced the legislation along with Chellie Pingree (D-ME) almost five years ago – told Fox News. "The same regulations that apply to multinational beef hackers that slaughter 10,000 animals a day shouldn't apply to a rancher slaughtering 20."

It's known as the PRIME Act, an acronym which means Processing Revival and Intrastate Meat Exemption, and is intended to "amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act to exempt from inspection the slaughter of animals and the preparation of carcasses conducted at a custom slaughter facility, and for other purposes." Doctors at Providence Hospital in Seattle observed that the very first known U.S. patient to have Covid-19 was suffering from a lack of oxygen. That was back in January 2020.

The unnamed patient, who reported to urgent care after four days of fever and a dry cough, was tested due to having just returned from Wuhan, China. After testing positive for 2019-nCoV, he was hospitalized on January 21 in an isolation room.

At first, his blood-oxygen saturation levels were within the normal 96%-98% range, and he did not have shortness of breath, but did have a cough and two days of nausea and vomiting, according to the New England Journal of Medicine. A chest x-ray on day 3 showed no abnormalities.

Patient zero was never put on a ventilator; instead, his doctors noted growing evidence of pneumonia coupled with low blood-oxygen saturation rates. He received supplemental oxygen, two kinds of antibiotics for a possible hospital-derived infection — and experimental drug Remdesivir for compassionate use.

The very next day, he began improving. On day 8, oxygen levels showed normal “and the previous bilateral lower-lobe rales were no longer present” in the lungs..

but more than 8 million people watched it anyway

"Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the big social platforms have generally been quicker than usual to intervene in the spread of misinformation. We’ve seen Facebook, Google, and Twitter add various labels, warnings, and links to high-quality news sources and public health organizations. And for the most part, the dumbest theories about the novel coronavirus have not reached huge scale — unless the theory was suggested by the president of the United States, in which case, well.

But some cracks are beginning to show. In February, a set of bizarre and almost incomprehensible theories began to spread on YouTube and Facebook alleging that 5G cellular networks had played a role in spreading the virus. And last week, we saw the emergence of the first true hit conspiracy video of the COVID-19 era. It’s called “Plandemic,” and like many conspiracy videos it asserts that a shadowy cabal of elites is using a global crisis as a cover to profiteer and entrench their power. Here’s Davey Alba in the New York Times:

In the 26-minute video, the woman asserted how Dr. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a leading voice on the coronavirus, had buried her research about how vaccines can damage people’s immune systems. It is those weakened immune systems, she declared, that have made people susceptible to illnesses like Covid-19.

The video, a scene from a longer dubious documentary called “Plandemic,” was quickly seized upon by anti-vaccinators, the conspiracy group QAnon and activists from the Reopen America movement, generating more than eight million views. And it has turned the woman — Dr. Judy Mikovits, 62, a discredited scientist — into a new star of virus disinformation."

On January 12th, 2017, the New York Times reports that "in his final days", Obama expanded the power of the NSA to "share globally interception communications with the 16 other intelligence agencies BEFORE APPLYING PRIVACY PROTECTIONS."

The changes right as he left office put into place procedures that allow the NSA to share certain raw, unminimized signals intelligence information with other Intelligence Community elements, specifically for authorized foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes. With respect to the copy of the updated procedures, DNI James Clapper signed these new rules on December 15th, 2016 and Loretta Lynch signed them on January 3rd, 2017.

Prior to this, the procedures were governed by Executive Order 12333. This order permits dissemination of signals intelligence data "only in accordance with procedures established by the DNI in coordination with the Defense Secretary and approved by the Attorney General." Traditionally, NSA analysts MUST filter the surveillance information for the rest of the government—searching and evaluating the information directly, passing on only those portions of emails and phone calls that they determine relevant to colleagues at other agencies, and masking names and other information about innocent Americans using minimization procedures.

The Clapper Changes are as follows:

National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien spoke with reporters for about 7 ½ minutes ... Here are some highlights:

-On reports that Putin’s spokesman has been hospitalized: “The President spoke to President Putin just recently, last week, and he seemed to be in good spirits and good health and we don't have any reason to suspect that it's otherwise. So, you know, look, this is a tough virus and people have been hit in the White House even … world leaders Boris Johnson, who actually came down with COVID and as another world leader, so something everyone's gonna watch carefully but we don't have any information other than that President Putin is doing just fine.”

On Kim Jong Un: “He seems to be out, cutting ribbons on a fertilizer factory so you know our thinking is that he's, he's probably doing well. This is a we call it the Hermit Kingdom. It's very difficult to get information out of North Korea, they're not very forthcoming with information but they did release photos of him being alive and well and we assume that he is.” He “can't say one way or the other” whether the U.S. has verified the photos “but those are the photos” that are “open source. And so we're seeing those same photos.”

On the origins of the virus, he said he could not provide a timeframe on the investigation: “There's certainly the potential it came from the laboratory” in Wuhon. “There's speculation that it came from the wet market, and neither one is a good answer for the Chinese – right, it either came from a horrific wet market where animals are tortured and exotic animals are consumed on site, and the conditions are filthy. When you watch the videos on it, it's something to really behold and something terrible. Or it came out of a lab where there was improper safety protocols in place. So neither one's a good answer for China.” Is it more speculation than evidence?

“I think we know it came from Wuhon, and I think there's circumstantial evidence that it could have come from the lab or the wet market but again, if you're China, neither one’s a good answer. We've had five plagues from China - in the last 20 years.”

On his own practices. O’Brien and his assistant, John Ullyot, were not wearing masks. “I think we're all taking all the steps. I use hand sanitizer all the time. I'll be when I get done with this hit – I’ll put my mask back on and we're doing a lot of calls, even within the White House - we have meetings we have a meeting of principals this morning where most people call in on the phone. So we're doing what we can to socially distance and washing our hands. We're using hand sanitizer or you're using mask on a pretty regular basis so we're being as careful as possible.”

-On Afghanistan and the breakdown between the government and the Taliban: “We want to bring the rule of law to Afghanistan, we want to bring liberty and democracy to Afghanistan, we want to bring basic human rights to Afghanistan. And a lot of American soldiers, sailors and Marines have faith that the ultimate sacrifice to do so…[it’s now ] time for the Afghan people to get together to enter into a meaningful peace process and it's time for America to come home, we've got a lot to focus on here.”

Legal expert Ken Starr called the FBI investigation into retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn "illegitimate." "We certainly do need to know why was the president, and now the vice president at the time, in the know about an investigation into Mike Flynn?" Starr said of former President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. "And I’m going to use a very harsh word, it was an illegitimate investigation." Starr continued: "In light of what the four months of investigation into Gen. Flynn ... let’s assume the earlier investigation, did he have contacts with the ... Russian assets ... let’s just assume that was legitimate. But as of Jan. 4, almost two weeks before this meeting in which the vice president participated, the FBI at lower levels of the operating levels says, 'We don’t have anything derogatory. ... We don’t need to continue this, let’s close it. A closed memorandum.'"

Flynn was charged with and pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about his contacts with the Russian government as part of the counterintelligence investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election. Newly released transcripts show top officials at the FBI pressed on with the investigation of Flynn, despite a lack of evidence he had committed a crime. "Now, why would the president of the United States and the vice president of the United States be getting this information about an investigation in their final days in office of Gen. Flynn, why?" Starr asked. "Sally Yates, the information we had was the acting attorney general in those waning days was absolutely blindsided once again by Jim Comey."

President Trump has cited the Department of Justice's decision to drop charges against Flynn and release of the transcripts related to the Russia probe as evidence of a conspiracy at the FBI to undermine him. Trump has dubbed the scandal "Obamagate." Attorney General William Barr has appointed a prosecutor to determine if any crimes were committed by top law enforcement officials during the Russia probe.

Texas Pedo Sentenced For Hundreds of Child Sex Crimes

A man from Water Valley, Texas, was sentenced today to serve 60 years in prison for producing hundreds of videos and images of himself sexually abusing a child.

Douglas Stephen Groover, 37, was sentenced after pleading guilty in February 2020 to two counts of production of child pornography. The sentence, which was imposed by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix of the Northern District of Texas, also included a lifetime term of supervised release and a restitution award of $53,000.

According to court documents, in addition to the hundreds of videos and images he created of himself sexually abusing a minor, he also admitted to sexually abusing at least two additional minors. Groover also admitted to maintaining a large collection of child pornography, which included depictions of the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers, sadism and bestiality.

Go San Angelo reported: One victim told investigators she had been assaulted by the suspect for several years. She said she had been forced to wear costumes and lingerie for the suspect, and he would photograph and video record her.

The warrant search of Groover’s home revealed a black Nikon camera, and several digital storage devices, which contained child pornography. Also found were lingerie and costumes consistent with the victim’s description.

A New York strip club owner is fed up with Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his orders to shut down so-called nonessential businesses.

So he's suing the governor — and making no bones about his feelings for the liberal executive — the New York Post reported.

What's he suing Cuomo for?

Sean McCarthy, owner of the Blush Gentleman's Club on Long Island, filed a lawsuit against the governor over his executive orders that forced nonessential businesses closed during the coronavirus epidemic.

According to the suit filed over the weekend, Cuomo's edict was an unconstitutional "breach" of his duty and caused "immediate and irreparable harm and actual and undue hardship" for McCarthy, according to the Post.

The club owner claims he can run his business through social distancing — though he didn't explain how that would work in a strip joint — and "strict hygiene" by staff, the paper said.

Cuomo isn't 'a king'

McCarthy's lawyer, Joe Murray, lit into the governor, saying, "Governor Cuomo is engaged in a huge overstep of executive power," the Post reported.

"He is infringing on people's fundamental civil rights far beyond the least restrictive means allowable under the constitution," Murray continued.

"Someone should remind him he is the governor and not the king," he added.

A Cuomo spokesman told the Post, "This executive authority was passed by the legislature and, as we were able to bend the curve and upend the models showing even higher hospitalizations and deaths, it was necessary to fight this ‎pandemic.

"But this is clearly the most New York Post story ever and I acknowledge that," the spokesman said.

Not just Cuomo

The Post reported that McCarthy is also suing the federal government because he and other strip club owners were denied funds from the federal government's bailout for small businesses, the Paycheck Protection Program.

The PPP declared that sex-related businesses were ineligible for federal loans under the stimulus plan.

The paper said McCarthy is looking for a jury trail, and at least $150,000 in damages and attorney costs.

The federal government has not yet responded, according to the Post.

Postal authorities have informed the Passaic County Board of Elections about the potential violations involving vote-by-mail ballots – ballots they discovered by the hundreds in some mailboxes. Those votes will be reviewed by election officials on Tuesday to decide if they are legitimate or fraudulent.

“Board of Elections Commissioners will determine tomorrow whether these ballots will be counted,” said county spokesman Keith Furlong. “Any potential irregularities will be handed off to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.”

I don't know what is going on with the fake news story about Sullivan making reversible error accepting Flynn's guilty plea but he didn't do it. Contreras did. Republican House member proposes FISA repeal

The chairman of the House Freedom Caucus unveiled a bill Tuesday afternoon that would repeal the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The Fourth Amendment Restoration Act from Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs would dismantle the FISA court, where federal law enforcement officers go to obtain surveillance warrants for counterintelligence and counterterrorism investigations.

“Under the Obama administration, the FISA system was weaponized against a political opponent in a brazen attempt to undermine the will of the American people. But for President Trump’s historic victory in 2016, these abuses, and all the corruption at the highest levels of our Justice and Intelligence agencies, might never have been uncovered. What happened to President Trump and members of his campaign team could happen to any American, regardless of their political persuasion," Biggs said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “For this reason, I’ve introduced this legislation to fully repeal FISA, institute strict policies to protect Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights, and punish government officials who stray from these constitutional safeguards. We cannot allow a rogue administration to repeat the gross constitutional violations of 2016. We need a new start and complete protections of the Fourth Amendment.”

The legislation would also ban the use of any data collection without a warrant as evidence against U.S. citizens in any criminal, civil, or administration proceeding or investigation. Violations would result in criminal penalties including $10,000 or imprisonment for not less than five years, or both. Biggs introduced the bill in the wake of the Justice Department filing to dismiss its criminal case against retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn in light of newly disclosed evidence that his legal team argued supported its assertion that the FBI set up its client. Phone conversations between then-Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and of Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, were surveilled by the FBI by obtaining FISA warrants during the Obama administration.

Flynn’s name, however, was “unmasked” and leaked to the media, setting off a firestorm of accusations that Flynn lied to Vice President Mike Pence about the content of his discussions with Kislyak. Although the former national security adviser initially pleaded guilty to making a false statement to the FBI about his conversation with Kislyak, he later withdrew his plea after changing his team of attorneys.

Biggs's legislation has an uphill battle in the Democrat-controlled House that wants Attorney General William Barr investigated over the DOJ's withdrawal from the Flynn case but may rally the GOP base over the next few months during the election cycle. In March, the House passed bipartisan legislation that reauthorized FISA-related lone-wolf, roving wiretap, and business records powers and established several reforms that expired in mid-March. The Senate, meanwhile, greenlighted a 77-day stopgap FISA measure and pledged to take the House bill back up and consider amendments back in April, but that was not picked up by the House. The three FISA measures giving federal law enforcement the ability to collect and maintain data expired on March 15.

Background

Long-term use of respiratory protection may be necessary, but compliance may be low, and physiologic effects have not been well evaluated.

Methods

Ten nurses participated; physiologic effects, subjective symptoms, and compliance with wearing an N95 alone or with a surgical mask overlay were assessed. Longitudinal analysis based on multivariate linear regression models assessed changes in outcome variables (co2, O2, heart rate, perceived comfort items, compliance measures, and others). Analyses compared changes over time, and compared wearing only an N95 to wearing an N95 with a surgical mask overlay.

Results

Most nurses (90%, n = 9) tolerated wearing respiratory protection for two 12-hour shifts. co2 levels increased significantly compared with baseline measures, especially when comparing an N95 with a surgical mask to only an N95, but changes were not clinically relevant. Perceived exertion; perceived shortness of air; and complaints of headache, lightheadedness, and difficulty communicating also increased over time. Almost one-quarter (22%) of respirator removals were due to reported discomfort. N95 adjustments increased over time, but other compliance measures did not vary by time. Compliance increased on day 2, except for adjustments, touching under the N95, and eye touches.

Conclusion

Long-term use of respiratory protection did not result in any clinically relevant physiologic burden for health care personnel, although many subjective symptoms were reported. N95 compliance was fairly high.

Headaches Associated With Personal Protective Equipment – A Cross‐Sectional Study Among Frontline Healthcare Workers During COVID‐19

Abstract

Background

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) is an emerging infectious disease of pandemic proportions. Healthcare workers in Singapore working in high‐risk areas were mandated to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as N95 face mask and protective eyewear while attending to patients.

Objectives

We sought to determine the risk factors associated with the development of de novo PPE‐associated headaches as well as the perceived impact of these headaches on their personal health and work performance. The impact of COVID‐19 on pre‐existing headache disorders was also investigated.

Methods

This is a cross‐sectional study among healthcare workers at our tertiary institution who were working in high‐risk hospital areas during COVID‐19. All respondents completed a self‐administered questionnaire.

Results

A total of 158 healthcare workers participated in the study. Majority [126/158 (77.8%)] were aged 21‐35 years. Participants included nurses [102/158 (64.6%)], doctors [51/158 (32.3%)], and paramedical staff [5/158 (3.2%)]. Pre‐existing primary headache diagnosis was present in about a third [46/158 (29.1%)] of respondents. Those based at the emergency department had higher average daily duration of combined PPE exposure compared to those working in isolation wards [7.0 (SD 2.2) vs 5.2 (SD 2.4) hours, P < .0001] or medical ICU [7.0 (SD 2.2) vs 2.2 (SD 0.41) hours, P < .0001]. Out of 158 respondents, 128 (81.0%) respondents developed de novo PPE‐associated headaches. A pre‐existing primary headache diagnosis (OR = 4.20, 95% CI 1.48‐15.40; P = .030) and combined PPE usage for >4 hours per day (OR 3.91, 95% CI 1.35‐11.31; P = .012) were independently associated with de novo PPE‐associated headaches. Since COVID‐19 outbreak, 42/46 (91.3%) of respondents with pre‐existing headache diagnosis either “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that the increased PPE usage had affected the control of their background headaches, which affected their level of work performance.

Conclusion

Most healthcare workers develop de novo PPE‐associated headaches or exacerbation of their pre‐existing headache disorders.

I was searching some of the older articles with regards to Lt. General Flynn's "guilty plea"

(as it was brought up in last bread ~ no, I did not save the post numbers)

Anyway, browsing through the information, I had forgotten how completely miserable, pathetic, and vicious ~ yes, VICIOUS ~ Judge Sullivan was to Gen. Flynn in that December 18, 2018 court hearing...

Makes my blood boil, reading the accounts again, as well, after time has passed, I have to wonder What Judge Sullivan knew then? Protest & Shout TOO Much?

I say this, because it just comes across as Truly Over-the-Top Nasty by Sullivan towards a 33 year Army Veteran ~ no?

"...Somehow, the Boston Red Sox and their management became reputedly an adjunct of the American CIA. And that this began quite some years ago. A Special Federal Prosecutor in Chicago, through federal grand juries, is compiling data that tends to show that Jeff Gannon, while in or near the White House with George W. Bush, was given data and documents directly by Bush himself used to blow the cover of deep CIA operative Valerie Plame. And that this was used as a reprisal against Plame because her husband, a former U.S. Ambassador, criticized Bush.

MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY OF COMMERCE

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 301 of title 3, United States Code, I hereby delegate to the Secretary of Commerce, in consultation with the Attorney General, the functions and authorities vested in the President by section 1260J of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (Public Law 116-92).

The delegation in this memorandum shall apply to any provision of any future public law that is the same or substantially the same as the provision referenced in this memorandum.

The Secretary of Commerce is authorized and directed to publish this memorandum in the Federal Register.

IMPORTANT: On 5/11/20 Grassley gave a well structured speech on Senate floor on the Flynn case. In giving this speech he is reading into the congressional record many of the key details of the Flynn case including the FBI/DOJ misconduct and law breaking.It begins on page S2334 subtitled "Russia."
