A federal grand jury returned an indictment today charging an Alexandria man with conspiring and attempting to provide material support to al-Shabaab, a terrorist organization operating in Somalia.

According to court documents, Liban Haji Mohamed, 34, a Somali-born naturalized United States citizen, allegedly left the United States in July 2012 with the intent to join al-Shabaab in East Africa. Al-Shabaab is a Somali-based insurgent and terrorist group that has claimed responsibility for many bombings in Somalia and Uganda and is known to have recruited Westerners. According to court documents, Mohamed allegedly attempted to recruit an undercover agent to travel to Somalia to provide combat training to al-Shabaab fighters. Mohamed also allegedly planned to use his own media skills to improve al-Shabaab’s propaganda machine, which it has used to recruit Westerners. Mohamed was a close associate of convicted terrorist Zachary Chesser, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempting to provide material support to al-Shabaab.

In July 2012, Interpol, the world’s largest international police organization, issued a red notice seeking Mohamed as a wanted fugitive. In January 2015, the FBI announced the addition of Mohamed to the “Most Wanted Terrorists” list, and is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mohamed.

Mohamed is charged with conspiring and attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Facebook Slams WSJ Report For 'Ignoring Critical Facts' On Polarizing Content

Facebook has slammed a Tuesday report in the Wall Street Journal accusing the company of 'shutting down efforts to make the site less divisive' and 'largely shelved' internal research on whether social media increases polarization in general.

"Unfortunately, this particular story willfully ignored critical facts that undermined its narrative. The piece uses a couple of isolated initiatives we decided against as evidence that we don't care about the underlying issues - and it ignored the significant efforts we did make," said Facebook VP of Integrity, Guy Rosen.

"The piece disregarded how our research, and research we continue to commission, informed dozens of other changes and new products. It also ignored other measures we've taken to fight polarization. As a result, readers were left with the impression we are ignoring an issue that in fact we have invested heavily in." -Guy Rosen, Facebook VP of Integrity

The Journal claims that Facebook's interest in tackling "sensationalism and polarization" was "fleeting" - as "Mr. Zuckerberg and other senior executives largely shelved the basic research, according to previously unreported internal documents and people familiar with the effort."

Canceled Contact Tracing Contract Reveals Michigan Authorized Democrat Firm for 400 Activists to Collect Medical Information

A copy of the since-canceled contact tracing contract Michigan Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration executed with a Democrat operative’s consulting firm, obtained exclusively by Breitbart News, shows the firm would have been paid to recruit 400 volunteers to collect medical information from state residents.

The contract was signed April 20, 2020, between the Michigan Public Health Institute and Great Lakes Community Engagement, a nonprofit organization under the control of Mike Kolehouse, a Democrat campaign consultant.

Emails released on Tuesday show Whitmer’s team gave the “green light” to hire the firm, according to Bridge Magazine.

“We got the green light from EOG [the executive office of the governor] to move forward with a slightly different organizational arrangement of the contact tracing volunteer work,” Andrea Taverna, a senior adviser at the Department of Health and Human Services, said in an email to other health department officials.

“This would still be working with Mike Kolehouse, so work there isn’t lost — it’s just organized somewhat differently,” she wrote.

Despite those statements, Whitmer’s office has sought to distance her from the arrangement.

“When it was brought to my attention, I told them to cancel it,” Whitmer said during an April 22 press conference.

She also defended the department, saying it “does not have a political bone in their theoretical body.”

But no one has explained how Kolehouse, who has a long history of working exclusively for Democrat campaigns and progressive causes, came onto the scene to begin with.

Janice Kidd, finance and budget manager at the Michigan Public Health Institute, signed the agreement.

Idaho State track athletes want transgender lawsuit tossed

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Two female athletes at Idaho State University want a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit challenging a new state law banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports, the first such law in the nation.

Madison Kenyon, 19, of Johnston, Colorado, and Mary Marshall, 20, of Twin Falls, Idaho, run track and cross-country on scholarships at the university. Each said they’ve lost to a transgender athlete from the University of Montana and contend that transgender athletes are unfair competition.

Attorneys with Alliance Defending Freedom are representing the two athletes. They filed the request to side with the state of Idaho in fighting the lawsuit and are asking that the lawsuit be dismissed.

“Female defeat by a male athlete is uniquely demoralizing due to the elemental inequity involved in being subjected to the match-up in the first place,” court documents state. “Male intrusion represents the elimination from female sport of the relationship of effort to success that makes the draw of sport and competitive striving what it is.”

Republican Gov. Brad Little in May signed into law the measure that received overwhelming support in the Republican-dominated House and Senate, but was universally opposed by Democrats. It takes effect July 1.

The ban applies to all teams sponsored by public schools, colleges and universities. A girls’ or women’s team will not be open to transgender students who identify as female.

The American Civil Liberties Union and Legal Voice in mid-April filed the lawsuit contending the law violates the U.S. Constitution because it is discriminatory and an invasion of privacy.

The groups also said the law is a violation of Title IX, the 1972 law that bars sex discrimination in education. The groups are asking the court to permanently prevent Idaho from enforcing the law.

Backers said the law, called the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, is needed because transgender female athletes have physical advantages.

They also cite Title IX, contending that allowing transgender athletes on girls’ and women’s teams would negate nearly 50 years of progress women have made since that law took effect and that is credited with opening up sports to female athletes, and along with it scholarships and other opportunities.

Specifically, the lawsuit contends the law violates the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause because it is discriminatory and the 4th Amendment’s protections against invasion of privacy because of tests required should an athlete’s gender be challenged.

Two plaintiffs are bringing the lawsuit. One is an unnamed Boise area high school student who is cisgender. Cisgender refers to someone whose gender identity corresponds with the sex the person was identified as having at birth.

The other is Lindsay Hecox, 19, who will be a sophomore this fall at Boise State University and hopes to qualify for the women’s cross-country team. She competed on the boys’ team at a Moorpark, California, high school before transitioning after graduating.

The NCAA has a policy allowing transgender athletes to compete. But the sponsor of the Idaho law, Republican Barbara Ehardt, has called the NCAA policy “permissive.”

In February, the families of three Connecticut female high school runners filed a federal lawsuit seeking to block transgender athletes from participating in girls sports. The families contend that allowing athletes with male anatomy to compete has deprived their daughters of track titles and scholarship opportunities.

The media didn’t care. Even though…

Romney had nothing to do with the death of this woman. The Priorities USA ad falsely claimed Romney’s company, Bain Capital, swooped in and took away this woman’s health insurance, which caused her to succumb to cancer. But even that isn’t true. The company was doomed by overseas competition, specifically China, so as absurd as the premise was to accuse Romney of such a thing, even the premise of the premise was a lie. Even so…

The media didn’t care.

Here’s how the far-left Politico covered it:

The Obama super PAC Priorities USA Action is unveiling perhaps the harshest, most personal ad of the 2012 presidential race, featuring a former worker at a Bain-owned company talking about the death of his wife after their family lost health insurance.

The commercial casts Mitt Romney’s business background in a severely negative light, but it’s not a typical slash-and-burn attack ad. Instead, it features former GST Steel employee Joe Soptic speaking to the camera about what happened when the plant where he worked shut down.

Can you sense the outrage?

The far-left Washington Post merely ran with the headline: “New ad ties Romney to cancer death.”

Guess how much outrage Joe Scarborough expressed over someone being falsely accused of killing a woman? He meekly asked if the ad “takes things too far.”

Ooh, Joe… slow down.

New York Magazine: “Mitt Romney Basically Killed a Woman.”

CNNLOL labeled the ad “inaccurate,” and then moved on. Oddly enough, I don’t remember endless days packed with screeching CNNLOL segments about how immoral and heinous the ad was. Just a shrug backed by a wink of approval.

And guess who was behind the ad? No less than Bill Burton, who had just left the White House as Obama’s deputy press secretary to form Priorities USA, a super PAC backed by such luminaries as CNNLOL’s very own Paul Begala, movie mogul Jeffrey Katzenberg, HBO’s Bill Maher, and Media Matters founder David Brock.

You want to know why I remember this so well…?

Because it was a major turning point in my professional life, the moment I stopped being one of those idiot Republicans who felt it was beneath us to fight back. Here was the sitting president of the United States and his filthy rich cronies — an offshoot of his campaign, falsely accusing the Republican nominee of murder, and the media let them all get away with it.

Obama paid no political price for this. The major networks ignored it.

And the ad played on…

But after all that, I’m supposed to be outraged because Trump is sticking it to a human piece of garbage like Joe Scarborough, a guy who publicly joked about having sex with and killing this woman, a guy who regularly smears Trump and his supporters as Nazis and mass murderers… I’m supposed to be morally outraged by that?

Fuck you.

What you are really asking is that I roll over and accept the media and the political establishment’s two sets of rules; that I roll over and accept my status as a second class citizen in my own country.

Is the financial cure worse than the disease? Financial writer John Rubino says look at commercial real estate as an omen of what is to come. Rubino explains, “Sooner or later you’ve got to pay your bills, and if you don’t have anybody paying your bills to you, then you go bankrupt. Commercial real estate could just be a blood bath, which take us back to all the bailouts. You can’t let a big sector go bust in this world because suddenly everything is too big to fail. There is not a major sector out there that can be allowed to go bust. Not the airlines, not commercial real estate, certainly not the banks, you name it and it has to be bailed out. That’s where the really crazy stuff starts. When people figure out we are basically bailing out everybody from home owners to student loan holders, to car loan holders and right down the line, and then we get state and local governments with this gigantic multi-trillion dollar problem . . . and the amount of debt is off the charts to bail all of these guys out, that is when the real fun starts.”

How long will the bailouts go on? Rubino says, “We are heading into a Presidential election, which means we cannot let anything major fail. If you are the Trump Administration and Congress, you can’t let something big fail because it’s a crisis right before you need to get re-elected. So, you’ve got to bail people out. That’s what California, Illinois and Chicago, New York, Kentucky and all the bankrupt and badly run states have been hoping for all along. They have been hoping there would be a big crisis that would bail them out of their horrendous mismanagement of the past 20 or 30 years. There was no way that Illinois was not going to go bankrupt in normal times . . . or Chicago. . . . Now, they can go to the federal government and say we need a trillion dollars right now or we are going to lay off all the cops and all the teachers, and they think they have a pretty good chance of getting the bailout because the alternative is poison for the people running for office . . . . If you are the Trump Administration or Congress, I don’t see how you stop bailing people out before the election.”

What could go wrong? Rubino says, “They have control of the money supply, and they think that’s enough. That’s only half of the ledger. What they don’t have control of is the value of these currencies that they are creating infinite amounts of. . . . You can’t control what people think the currencies are worth, or what the dollar is worth going forward. Once these currencies start falling in a disorderly way, and not 1% or 2% a year, then it’s game over. They will find out at some point a printing press is good as long as the currency maintains value, but as soon as it starts falling, a printing press does you no good because the more you print, the faster the currency falls. So, that day is coming, and these never ending bailouts might be the catalyst that takes us there, and it’s been a long wait.”

Left-wing “explainer” website Vox reports Wednesday that leading billionaires in Silicon Valley are joining forces to build a digital campaign around former Vice President Joe Biden, who is holed up in his Wilmington, Delaware, home.

US ends ALL BUT ONE sanctions waivers for Iran nuclear facilities

The US is giving foreign governments 60 days to wrap up work on Iranian nuclear facilities – 90 days for the civilian reactor in Bushehr – or face Washington’s sanctions, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced.

Washington has offered waivers for its sanctions against Tehran in connection with several civilian facilities since President Donald Trump unilaterally exited a nuclear deal with Iran in 2018. Now those waivers are being phased out entirely, Pompeo said on Wednesday.

European, Chinese and Russian companies working on nuclear projects in Iran will have two months to wrap up their operations or face US sanctions. The only exception is Unit 1 of the Bushehr nuclear power plant, where the waiver will be extended for 90 days “to ensure safety,” the State Department said.

The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) pact had been negotiated by the Obama administration and envisioned a 10-year moratorium on most nuclear research in Iran. It was intended to prevent Tehran from developing an atomic bomb – something Israel had claimed was imminent at the time. Trump campaigned on denouncing the deal as “terrible” and pledging he would scrap it.

Since he did so, in May 2018, Washington has systematically reimposed all the previous sanctions levied against Tehran’s nuclear program and expanded the blockade to practically outlaw all commerce with Iran.

Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia – who also signed the JCPOA – did not abandon the treaty, but the reluctance of the three European countries to buck their US ally practically rendered the treaty moot.

Jordan: World cannot stay silent in face of Israeli annexation

“The decision will kill the two-state solution and fuel the conflict," said Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.

The international community must unite to halt Israeli annexation, which will institutionalize apartheid, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said Wednesday as he pressed for increased UN involvement in the peace process.

“The decision will kill the two-state solution and fuel the conflict, margin the one-state option an inevitable fate, which the world cannot stay silent on, especially with the institutionalization of apartheid and racism,” Safadi said, according to a report from the Jordan News Agency.

Safadi spoke with UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov in Amman about ongoing UN efforts to convene a meeting of the Quartet to discuss ways to save the peace process.

After the meeting Safadi tweeted that he had spoken with Mladenov on "efforts to prevent illegal annexation of occupied Palestinian land [and] to create horizon for talks to solve conflict on basis of [two]-state solution [and international] law. Protecting peace requires preventing annexation."

Mladenov tweeted that he had also meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri. He wrote that he had spoken with both him and Safadi "about the need to help all sides engage on resolving the [Israeli-Palestinian] conflict on the basis of two states [and] avoid damaging unilateral action."

Jordan and the Palestinian Authority are in the midst of a campaign to thwart any Israeli annexation attempts. The European Union and the UN have similarly expressed concerns.

Last week, Mladenov called for the Quartet – composed of the UN, EU, Russia and the US – to convene and “come forward with a proposal that will enable the Quartet to take up its mediation role and work jointly with countries in the region to advance the prospect of peace.”

‘Obsessive partisanship’: Pew Research blasted for misleading tweet casting Dem districts as doing better on Covid-19 deaths

The Pew Research Center is being criticized on social media for appearing to spin a graphic depicting deaths from the coronavirus outbreak in favor of Democrats – despite the actual data painting a very different picture.

“Covid-19 deaths have declined in Democratic congressional districts since mid-April, but remained relatively steady in districts controlled by Republicans,” the research body tweeted on Wednesday.

While the statement was technically true, it didn’t quite match up with the data presented. According to Pew, and based on numbers from Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Democratic districts have actually seen a decline in Covid-19 deaths since mid-April, while numbers in Republican districts have stayed relatively steady – but coronavirus fatalities in Dem districts are still more than double those in opposing districts.

New deaths reported in Democrat-controlled areas have fallen from 7.4 to 4.1 in the last month – based on a rolling average of seven days – while Republican districts have seen the average for new deaths drop from 2.0 to 1.7.

Once the actual numbers are observed, Pew’s assertion that Democrat congressional districts have seen a decline while Republican congressional districts have seen little change comes off as a bit misleading – something social media users have not been afraid to tell the “nonpartisan” data analysis center.

“When ppl ask me what I mean when I say America's uniquely obsessive partisanship is disrupting important study and analysis, in addition to tapping into the public's worst instincts, well,” reporter Seth Mandel tweeted when presenting the study to his followers.

Facebook Whistleblowers: Company Failed to Report Illegal Activity

Whistleblowers at Facebook have filed a complaint with the SEC alleging that the company was aware of illegal activity on its platform, yet failed to notify the proper authorities, according to a report in the Washington Post.

According to the report, the illegal activity took place on both Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram, and included the sale of opioids and other drugs, as well as images of child sexual abuse.

Via the Washington Post:

The complaint, which was obtained by The Washington Post, includes dozens of pages of screenshots of opioids and other drugs for sale on Facebook and its photo-sharing site Instagram, with some having seemingly obvious tags such as “#buydrugsonline.” It also notes that Facebook has a pattern of taking down content when it is pointed out by media or activists, only to have it reappear later.

In a sworn statement, the whistleblowers, who include former moderators at the tech giant, said that the material for sale on Facebook-owned platforms included child pornography:

“There were groups where pornographic content related to children was auctioned. And they used [Facebook] systems [for] all of it, from what I could see,” the ex-moderator wrote in a sworn statement.

Another whistleblower said that Facebook executives did not take action on the illegal sale of drugs, despite being notified:

“Facebook executives were made aware the scale of counterfeit OxyContin being sold across their platforms was enormous. But while other tech firms and the pharmaceutical industry invested heavily in resources to mitigate the damage of illegal narcotic sales online killing tens of thousands of Americans, Facebook executives aggressively lobbied other social media platforms including Twitter not to take action or to engage in the counterfeit OxyContin removal initiative,” the statement says.

The complaint aims to prove that by concealing illegal activity from both shareholders and the authorities, Facebook violated its fiduciary duty to investors.

A Facebook spokesman told the Post that the company has “regularly disclosed potential risks related to content in our SEC filings, including at least four times in the last year.”
