More than 50 Cleveland firefighters responded Wednesday morning to a large blaze with multiple explosions in a warehouse in the city’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood. Crews were dispatched to a fire at the AJ Rose Manufacturing Co. in the 3100 block of West 38th Street at 9:05 a.m., Lt. Mike Norman said.

As firefighters finished extinguishing the flames at 10 a.m., smoke continued to billow out of the shattered windows. In a statement, the company said: “We are very grateful that no one was hurt in this incident. The safety of everyone in our facility is always a top priority.”

“We don’t know exactly what started the fire, but there were several explosions as we responded,” Norman said.

US No Longer Needs Afghanistan's Consent to Use Military Force - White House

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States will no longer rely on the consent of the previous Afghan government to use military force in the country in light of changing circumstances following the US withdrawal and subsequent rise to power by the Taliban*, the White House said on Wednesday.

“As a matter of international law, host nation consent provided a basis for counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan prior to the withdrawal of US forces,” the White House said in a report on legal and policy frameworks for the use of US military force.

“In light of changed circumstances associated with that withdrawal, the United States does not intend to rely on that previously provided consent.”

Absent reliance on consent to use force in Afghanistan, the US has the inherent right to use necessary and proportionate force in self-defense to the extent Afghanistan is unwilling or unable to confront threats to the US emanating from its territory, the White House said.

There have been no changes to the domestic law basis for US counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan, the White House noted.

Following the US decision to withdraw from Afghanistan, US President Joe Biden said the US remains prepared to use force against terrorist threats in Afghanistan if necessary.

The Biden administration rang in the US' Afghan exit on August 31, 2021, as officials with the Afghan government were faced with an onslaught from advancing Taliban forces. In the days that followed, the US-backed government was toppled, with then-President Ashraf Ghani fleeing the country.

Achieving and integrating breakthroughs in all of these areas will require choreographed cooperation among researchers and engineers specializing in such areas as immunology, microbiology, virology, medical infectious diseases, molecular biology, and medical countermeasure product development and manufacturing.

DARPA-funded teams will be required to demonstrate their integrated platforms in five simulations during the planned four-year program; they will initially test their platforms using pathogens of their choice, but ultimately they will test using DARPA-selected pathogens, including two demonstrations in which the identity of the pathogen will remain opaque to the teams until the 60-day clock starts. To ensure the developed platforms can produce a quality product with a viable pathway for regulatory review, each team will be required to complete a Phase I clinical safety trial before the end of the program.

A benefit of the nucleic-acid-based approach to limiting the spread of infection is that the genetic constructs introduced to the body would be processed quickly and would not integrate into an individual’s genome. Similarly, the antibodies produced in response to the treatment would only be present in the body for weeks to months. This is consistent with DARPA's intent with P3, which is to safely deliver transient immunity to a virus, halting the spread of disease by creating a firewall.

“Our country asks our military Service members to deploy globally and provide humanitarian assistance in all manner of high-risk environments. This grant is part of a DARPA program called ADEPT: PROTECT (Autonomous Diagnostics to Enable Prevention and Therapeutics: Prophylactic Options to Environmental and Contagious). The goal is to develop platform technologies that can be deployed safely and rapidly to provide the U.S. population with near-immediate protection against emerging infectious diseases and engineered biological weapons, even in cases when the pathogen or infectious agent is unknown.

The complainant alleged that by recommending vaccinating healthy British children under the age of 11 against Covid-19, the Pfizer CEO was making a claim for the clinical efficacy and safety of Pfizer’s product and its risk/benefit balance, even though the vaccine had not yet been included in the emergency use temporary approval for use in children this young in the UK.

2 ‘Covid in schools was thriving’. ‘This was disturbing significantly the educational system and there were kids that would have severe symptoms.’

The complainant stated that severe Covid-19 was rare amongst children and school age in the UK and while the virus did circulate in schools, schools had typically reflected community transmission throughout the pandemic. Neither had Covid-19 itself had a significant impact on disturbing children’s education in the UK. The ‘disturbance’ to the UK educational system had resulted from political decisions made by governments, not the virus. Indeed, the complainant knew that the UK had the second highest rates of school closures in Europe, except for Italy – a result of political decisions.

The complainant stated that there was simply no evidence that healthy school children in the UK were at significant risk from the SARS COV-2 virus and to imply that they were was disgracefully misleading.

3 ‘So, there was no doubt in my mind that the benefits completely were in favour of doing it.’

The complainant stated whether Pfizer, or indeed the BBC, liked it or not, opinion about the benefits and risks of vaccinating healthy children against an infection which posed little risk to them, and the ethical considerations of exposing healthy children to the risks of vaccination (no matter how rare those effects might be) in order to protect adults or vulnerable members of society, was not settled. For a pharmaceutical company to be behaving on a public platform as if it was, was wrong. The complainant alleged that the material was in breach of the Code in that ‘emerging clinical and scientific opinions which had not been resolved in favour of one generally accepted viewpoint must be referred to in a balanced manner’.

The complainant understood that Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine fell within the clause of the Code relating to temporary authorisation for sale or supply without a marketing authorisation. The complainant stated such was the poor quality of this activity and the materials which were the subject of this complaint in terms of their lack of compliance with the Code that the complainant found it difficult to believe that Pfizer had undergone the required prior scrutiny and approval by the MHRA on behalf of the ministers as set out in Clause 11.3 of the Code.

The complainant alleged a breach of the Code as no information, whatsoever, was provided about reporting of side-effects, or indeed the side-effects themselves.

The complainant had no way of knowing whether the interview was or was not solicited by Pfizer. Similarly, the complainant had no way of knowing whether Pfizer’s CEO was formulating his answers based on briefing notes prepared by the Pfizer communications department or, indeed, whether the journalist prepared his written article with the aPost too long. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that it had been approached by the BBC for an interview with its CEO which was held on 22 November 2021. The news article and associated video interview, referred to by the complainant, were produced and published by the BBC on 2 December 2021. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that the 45-minute interview was intended to cover news topics identified by the BBC about Pfizer’s commitment to the global Covid-19 vaccine rollout and ongoing innovation to fight the pandemic.

The Panel noted that complaints about third party articles in the press etc were judged upon the acceptability of the information provided to that third party by the pharmaceutical company, such as any press release, unedited interview etc rather than the final published article. The Panel noted Pfizer’s submission that it had no editorial control or right to review the excerpts of the interview chosen by the BBC for inclusion in their news articles and no Pfizer press briefing was issued to the BBC in association with the interview. The Panel also noted Pfizer’s submission that it had not been able to obtain a full transcript of the interview from the BBC as the BBC’s own policies did not allow this; it had, however, obtained some limited expanded excerpts from the interview. The Panel noted that it was obliged to make its rulings based on what Pfizer’s CEO had actually stated rather than the edited published article and video. The Panel noted, therefore, that in relation to the quotations cited by the complainant, these could only be considered within the context of the overall interview based on the limited BBC transcript provided by Pfizer as part of its response.

Alec Baldwin to be formally charged Tuesday in Halyna Hutchins’ death

Alec Baldwin will be formally charged with involuntary manslaughter Tuesday in the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Criminal charges against the “30 Rock” star, along with the Western film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, were announced earlier this month, though not officially filed.

“The District Attorney and the special prosecutor are fully focused on securing justice for Halyna Hutchins,” said Heather Brewer, a spokesperson for First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies’ office in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “The evidence and the facts speak for themselves.”

Baldwin fired the prop gun — which contained a live bullet that killed married mom Hutchins, 42, and injured director Joel Souza, 49, on the set in October 2021.

Assistant director David Halls has taken a misdemeanor plea deal for handing the loaded gun to Baldwin.

U.S. Attorney Announces Settlement Of Civil Fraud Lawsuit Against Former Hunter College Professor And Hunter College For Fraudulently Using Federal Research Funds

Jeffrey Parsons-Hietikko to Pay $375,000 and Admits to Seeking Reimbursements for Personal Travel. Hunter College to Pay $200,000 and Admits to Using NIH Funds to Pay Parsons’ Staff for Time Spent Working on Projects Unrelated to the NIH Grants.

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced today that the United States has filed and settled a civil fraud lawsuit against HUNTER COLLEGE (“HUNTER”) and JEFFREY T. PARSONS-HIETIKKO (“PARSONS”), a former HUNTER psychology professor who served as Director of Hunter’s Center for HIV Educational Studies (“CHEST”). The lawsuit resolves the United States’ allegations that for many years: (i) PARSONS improperly invoiced personal expenses to National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) funds, including expenses related to scuba diving trips, international flights for his family, a tropical birthday celebration, and travel for his work as a private consultant; (ii) HUNTER used NIH funds to pay PARSONS over $90,000 in retention bonuses without disclosing these payments to NIH as required; and (iii) PARSONS and HUNTER submitted false timekeeping records that misrepresented the time that CHEST staff spent working on NIH grant-related projects, resulting in the use of NIH grant funds to compensate CHEST staff for work performed for private clients. The lawsuit alleges that these impermissible uses of NIH funds violated HUNTER’s certifications to NIH and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) that the NIH funds would be used only for allowable research and academic purposes.

Leader Of Drug Delivery Service Responsible For Three Fentanyl Poisoning Deaths Convicted

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, announced the conviction in Manhattan federal court of BILLY ORTEGA, a/k/a “Jason,” for distributing the fentanyl that killed three young New York City professionals: Julia Ghahramani, Amanda Scher, and Ross Mtangi. The jury convicted ORTEGA following a two-week trial before U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “Billy Ortega ran a drug delivery service that delivered fentanyl, killing three victims on a single day. Worse yet, Ortega was fully aware that a customer had previously overdosed from the deadly fentanyl Ortega laced into his product, yet continued sending the drugs to his victims. As a unanimous jury determined, Ortega will now be held accountable for the victims’ tragic and untimely deaths. This case exemplifies that the national fentanyl epidemic continues to claim lives and inflict havoc on families from all walks of life. Drug dealers don’t label their drugs as poison, they just sell them with indifference to the tragedy left in their wake. Combatting the fentanyl epidemic in our communities is one of my Office’s top priorities.”

According to the allegations in the Indictment and the evidence presented at trial:

From at least in or about 2015 to at least in or about February 2022, BILLY ORTEGA was the leader of a narcotics delivery service in the New York City area that principally distributed cocaine. ORTEGA used his mother’s apartment in Manhattan as his stash house, employing family members and close friends to manage his drugs and cash and to deliver his drugs to customers.
