House Votes Down Resolution to Withdraw Troops from Syria
The measure failed in a vote of 103-321
The House on Tuesday voted down a War Powers Resolution introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that would order President Biden to withdraw all US troops from Syria within 180 days.
The resolution failed in a vote of 103-321, with 56 Democrats and 47 Republicans voting in favor of the bill. Click here for the roll call to see how each representative voted. In a statement after the vote, Gaetz vowed to continue his effort to end US involvement in Syria.
“There is no role for the United States of America in Syria. We are not a Middle Eastern power. We have tried to build a democracy out of sand, blood, and Arab militias. Time and again, the work we do does not reduce chaos. Oftentimes, it causes chaos – the very chaos that then subsequently leads to terrorism. While today’s vote may have failed, my fight to end forever wars and bring our troops home has only just begun,” he said.
The resolution was led by Gaetz and cosponsored by four other Republicans, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Matt Rosendale (R-MT). It also received support from some progressive Democrats, including Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ro Khanna (D-CA).
The Congressional Progressive Caucus was circulating a message to its 100 members in the House to support the bill. But the vote shows that the majority of Congress still supports the US occupation of eastern Syria, where there are currently about 900 US troops deployed.
The US insists its presence in Syria is about fighting ISIS remnants, but it is also part of the economic campaign against Damascus. By backing the Kurdish-led SDF in eastern Syria, the US controls about one-third of the country, an area where most of Syria’s oil fields are located.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley made a rare visit to Syria over the weekend and said continuing the fight against ISIS was worth staying in the country. But the Syrian government, its allies, and other countries in the region are sworn enemies of ISIS. They would continue fighting the group once the US is gone, something Gaetz pointed out when debating the resolution on the House floor.
“Both Assad and Turkey are in stronger positions today to put downward pressure on ISIS, and maybe if we weren’t giving weapons to people shooting at Assad, Assad would have every incentive to be able to engage ISIS in a way to ensure that it doesn’t come back,” Gaetz said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Rome on Thursday afternoon for a diplomatic visit, after being helicoptered to Ben Gurion Airport because protesters against the government created huge traffic jams to prevent him from being driven there.
Organizers of protests against the Netanyahu government’s proposed judicial reforms encouraged demonstrators to block the roads around Ben Gurion Airport. For hours ahead of his flight, large convoys of vehicles blocked the entrance to the airport.
Netanyahu flew to the airport by helicopter, instead of traveling by convoy on the highway from Jerusalem. He met there with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who had earlier scrapped plans to travel to Tel Aviv for their talks because of the protests.
Netanyahu’s flight to Rome departed later than planned, with the Prime Minister’s Office chalking up the delay to his meeting with Austin.
In remarks before boarding his plane, his wife Sara at his side, Netanyahu castigated the political leadership of the campaign against his judicial overhaul moves.

I saw this woman posing as a racist at an obviously staged FBI event. I began searching for female FBI agents, and located her within 10 minutes.

China has cautioned against Australia purchasing nuclear-powered submarines, warning the move poses serious risks to the region.
Beijing has firmly opposed reports that Australia will acquire submarines from the United States to modernise its fleet, warning that it will hurt peace and stability in region.
Australia will purchase nuclear-powered submarines as part of its AUKUS trilateral security partnership with the United States and United Kingdom.
Although the government has not confirmed the announcement, it is understood Australia will receive up to five Virginia-class submarines to plug capability gaps.
By the mid-2030s, Australia is expected to buy at least three of the vessels, with the deal including an option to buy another two.
In a press conference Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said the AUKUS partnership poses serious “nuclear proliferation risks” to the Asia-Pacific region.
“China has made clear its strong position on nuclear submarine cooperation between the US, the UK and Australia on multiple occasions,” she said.
“This trilateral cooperation constitutes serious nuclear proliferation risks, undermines the international non-proliferation system, exacerbates arms race and hurts peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific.
“It has been widely questioned and opposed by regional countries and the wider international community.”

The Ukrainian president employed a high-powered agent to plead with the Academy after last year’s rejection, Vanity Fair has claimed
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s bid to appear virtually at the Academy Awards has been rejected for the second year in a row, Vanity Fair reported on Thursday.
Mike Simpson, a high-powered Hollywood agent from the WME agency who also represents directors Quentin Tarantino and Bong Joon Ho, was supposedly sent in to try to clinch the deal, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was not swayed, the article says. The Academy declined to comment to Vanity Fair.
Zelensky’s efforts to appear at the Oscars last year were also rebuffed, reportedly because the Academy wanted to “steer clear of anything political.” Oscars producer Will Packer also allegedly complained that Hollywood was fawning over Zelensky because those affected by the conflict in Ukraine were white, while the many wars impacting non-white people around the world have been largely snubbed by the cultural elite.
Hollywood actor and vocal Zelensky supporter Sean Penn called for a boycott of the awards show and even vowed to melt down his own Oscar statues if his friend was not permitted to speak, a campaign that gained little traction at the time.
While Penn did not end up liquefying his awards, he did give one of them to Zelensky during a visit to Kiev, and has not commented on this year's developments.
The Ukrainian president has been ubiquitous at large-scale public events in the West since the start of Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine last year, appearing via video link to plead for financial and moral support at the Cannes, Venice, and Berlin film festivals, the Grammy Awards, the Glastonbury music festival, and even the New York Stock Exchange, where he rang the opening bell “virtually” in September.
However, Americans appear to be tiring of the comedian-turned-politician’s routine, with polls showing a growing portion of the electorate believes too much of their money is being sent to Ukraine. A recent analysis by German research firm Statista found President Joe Biden’s administration had spent more money on military aid to Ukraine than the US spent annually to fight its own war in Afghanistan.
