Post the last book(s) you have read. It would be nice if you add a synopsis or review as well, but it's not a requirement. Just seeing a snapshot of what other image-board anons are reading is itself awesome.

Greetings fellow /lit/erati!

Here are the rules:

1. Follow the Global Rules.

2. Try to keep things literature related.

3. No spamming.

4. No illegal content.

Guidelines and FAQ: https://8kun.top/lit/oddsandends.html

Regarding the missing board banners, this appears to be a site-wide issue. I will attempt a restore after this is fixed.

Regarding the related boards list … well.

/philosophy/ made it over originally with /lit/. Welcome /fanfic/. Glad you guys held the torch during the down time. Welcome back /cyber/ and /pdfs/. This leaves only /scifi/ aka "Asimovian Polemics". I am still open to suggestions.

That is all.

Let your minds and fingers roam free!

Why do Anglos praise this work?

It's a basic bitch brainlet book.

The only saving grace is the copious selections of superiour Continental prose which the author lifted from greater writers of the past.

My school combo would dox me, so let’s go with a SoCal Catholic Uni for the first two and a southern R2 public university for the third (which was more Catholic than the actually Catholic school I went to first—and that’s the clue I’ll give).

Grammar is a grindstone game. Writing is best improved through practice and imitating good writers (at first). My academic writing was crap until I went back for grad school and the faculty whipped me into shape. They gave me some books to read on academic style and conventions. I wish I could remember the title so that I could tell you. One of your teachers should have some good suggestions. A quick read with guidelines and suggestions.

Unless you’ve got a plan/pathway set up for after graduation, I’d recommend at least working on your writing. People will expect it of you, and it’s one thing you should be able to deliver. Granted, most writing you might do outside of academia will be straightforward enough that you’ll seem more than sufficient as you are now.

I've got a lecture by Daniel Flanagan that I think goes into his writing schedule. I forget what exactly is said in this lecture but what I do recall is that he was obsessed with time and schedule. He was never late for a deadline and disassociated with those unable to fulfil mutual deadlines.

Listened to that Damian Flanagan lecture and found it very disappointing. For an academic, his spoken language skills are poor, full of umms and errs, extremely repetitious, unstructured and overall, dull.

Within the dross, however, was a tiny worthwhile lode and Flanagan's insights into Mishima's obsession with time were indeed interesting, along with a number of observations (gossip and speculation I suspect) about his life.

I've just this week finished rereading Spring Snow which is a wonderful novel and leaves me saddened at the loss Japan suffered through the concluding weeks of WW2.

Perhaps in accordance with ineluctable progress, it was inevitable that they would have to be bombed into submitting to democracy. Sad, nevertheless.

> if your looking for advice

If you are looking for a convenient source of quotations that will give you a sense of faux intellectualism, justify whatever social or political agenda you have then sure this is for you.

The problem with many religions is that the adherents are often literal minded and do not understand that the founders may have been speaking metaphorically or allegorically when mentioning certain topics.

Often this leads to misinterpretations at best to the extent where the adherent believes the teachings to be the opposite of what the founder believed.

That's essentially a given because an income of $6,000 makes less than a illegal Mexican laborer working under minimum wage. But the main point is that a book definitely isn't easy money as OP either portrays or perceives it to be. Additionally, we already have AI writers, and that's going to change things further.

Also why isn't the writefag thread used for threads like this? There's tons of anons at least sharing their short stories. The board would be flooded if each fag made a thread for their short story. (Or maybe it's better that way?)

I have some ideas:

>Listen to Alex Jones

>Consider what would happen if that world existed

>Portray Alex Jones as a kind of action hero leading a fight against the inter-dimensional aliens and demons and their degenerate human and goblin followers

>Alex's followers arm themselves with alien technology and enter into the hell dimension where the AI god created to control humanity dwells

>He finds a room full of humanoids and frees them

>Alex Jones breaks into the throne room where Hillary Clinton or an analogue thereof is about to complete a ritual that involves

>Alex Jones blows up the psychic machines

>Hillary Clinton freaks out and tells Alex that this was a necessary measure to prevent something worse from happening

>On Earth humans are 'waking up' and running scared as the state of reality is shown to them

>The secret society controlling the world, without their AI god to unify them is now in a bitter civil war

>Shields designed to hold back worse creatures are now weakening

>Alex Jones is then taken to a secret chamber of the fortress by one of the freed fish people- there is a table with a slab of meat

>Transpires neither side truly won the War in Heaven and this is a piece of God

>Alex Jones eats the meat and gains divine powers and the power to foresee and to look into the past

>Transpires that said meat was corrupted by black magicks but Alex Jones isolates and crushes the evil through the power of his willpower and testosterone

Continue from there

Where once universities held themselves out as embodiments of the ancient ideal that the true purpose of wealth is to afford one the means and leisure to pursue knowledge and understanding of the world, now the only justification for knowledge was held to be to facilitate the pursuit of wealth.

David Graeber. The Democracy Project

>talk for students on literature

really, truth be told, literature has no "purpose" and may very well be diminishing in cultural significance in a money focused economy. The benefit of reading literature is that it may cultivate wisdom.

At length in his works Plato lauds the gaining of wisdom, and no more so than in The Republic (Book VI 484 et seq) in his discussion regarding the qualities indispensable for society's leaders (Guardians).

This could be a worthwhile basis for your talk

This subject has been confusing me so much lately. I always thought that the purpose of universities was about employment but I have recently listened to criticism about how businesses are too deep in the education system. Now I've reached this dilemma where I feel like I might be the cancer of the education system even if my intentions for wanting money are good since I'd rather not become homeless again. The internet for me has become what the university once was, especially as my major is not my true passion but just one of high interest.

One of the early advices I took when writing was mentioning a character as soon as possible. So the first paragraph doesn't go into detail about the geology (almost all scenarios takes place in the cluster of civilization). Partly to represent that going innawoods is a viable option (there is no woods).

If you want a rough timeline of the planet, a colony ship descended on it a few hundred years ago, which is an extremely short amount of time to properly terraform albedo, atmospheric conditions, to support basic life.

As for Ceres, the gender ratio is extremely skewed (as revealed in Chapter 2), and the general populace on the planet is extremely tampered by genetic engineering and cyborg engineering.

I never write stories but I have had some short fiction writings as university assignments. One thing that began to grow in my mind was questioning how descriptive I should be. I know that the reader doesn't know what I think, so I always tried to be as descriptive as possible, but I sometimes wonder it becomes overwhelming and takes away from the plot.

I took shot at writing for the hell of it a while ago. So

(1) how much detail I put in a scene is generally indicative of how much description I think is enough. I generally lose interest in a block of text and when nothing is really happening.

(2) more words adds on to more chances of errors, then more effort when it coems to proofreading and editing.

(3) one of the feedback I got from initial drafts was that I put too much visual detail

It doesn't mean I go scant, but I'd like to do the best possible with concise wording.

Fundamentally, every medium of art has its weaknesses and strengths. Visual and aural detail is what writing is extremely weak at conveying (vs a picture, audio), so I don't think heavy description helps. Vivid description may have been awesome before motion picture was a thing, but now we have YouTube and the internet.

>humans would come to defy its rules

Not really the right prose for the setting since humans are generally the subjugated demographic on the planet. The government is run by an AI, cyborgs and androids.

> About a rifle being silenced:

> or some other means of accelerating a projectile that is quieter than modern guns.

That's not a problem. The modern guns specifically made for silent cartridges (captive piston ammunition) are very quiet. Not "silenCED", noiseless in the first place. These were produced in series long ago. Old Soviet PSS ("Vul"), for one.

The problem is what happens if you want to shoot significantly beyond stone-throwing range or at a hard-ish target, and as such stop being content with subsonic bullets.

If something moves at >1 Mach, it compresses air in front fast enough to produce a shockwave. Why and how it moves at this speed doesn't matter.

How many writefags do we still have around here? I'm thinking anyone with with something complete or more than a few hundred words to share should make a thread for their work.

(That's being generous as some OPs people tried to start either don't share anything at all, or just share one paragraph.)

Here's how it's going to work;

-You post your story under 3000 words. I recommend that it's an introduction to your story, or a short story. Of course, you can post endings or middle chapters if you want, but you'd be a massive idiot.

-If you use google docs I'm not reading it

-If it's over 3000 words i'm not reading it.

-If you didn't upload to google docs and its under 3000 words I'll read your story.

-If you have shitty grammar and spelling, a terrible prose, or you write your sentences like

"Madamn's chagaron soul window fevered insibiously into the untransited elevate sunset as the moservier sagrated chivalriously in such-"

I'm going to call you out on it and stop reading

-If your story makes it past the previous checkpoints I'll finally give my opinion on what you actually want to hear

(Is the setting interesting?

Are the characters interesting?

Do I want to keep turning the page to read more?

Is your pacing good or bad?

Would I pay for this?)

Come on anon, I know your inner voice is killing your self confidence as a writer and you're secretly begging for validation. You know you want it. Post it.

Here you go. The comments section is open to unregistered users and unmoderated.

This is the first chapter bundle of a larger work. It's 6,211 words for over four chapters, but you could read the first two chapters.

> This is the first chapter bundle of a larger work. It's 6,211 words for over four chapters, but you could read the first two chapters.

I only read the first chapter.

The very first paragraph is describing 4 different planets that I don't give a crap about.

Next, the assassination scene is, just straight up, boring. I see you're trying to depict the cool sniper guy getting frustrated and trying to escape, but I can't feel any emotion from what should have been a major fuck up, guy just sounds like a robot as he jumps down a rooftop and breaks his legs.

Then we meet the blond guy… and then you throw in statements such as "Everyone knows blond andriods are evil", when I the reader, didn't.

I'm not feeling any sort of direction or motivation from anyone at all, probably cause the characterization is nonexistent, and there is no plot being defined.

Basically, this story has no plot, and the characters are boring to me.

> 2,000 word short story.

This one is sightly better than the previous one, but thats only because of a couple factors;

-It's set in the real world, so the shitty infodumping is cut out and unneeded.

-Your characters actually face an interesting dilemma, that I can understand would make them face some consequences, unlike the other story where sniper guy jumps off a roof and breaks his legs.

Alright, so our guy is being threatened by someone online to do something online or else his homo fanfiction will be released to his parents.

And then your story just takes a dump there.

Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Here's other feedback to contrast.

>>16769

>The very first paragraph is describing 4 different planets that I don't give a crap about.

It's not four planets, but one planet and three cities.

>The recently colonized planet only hosted three cities that neighbored each other:

You gotta check your reading comprehension for at least the second sentence.

>guy just sounds like a robot as he jumps down a rooftop and breaks his legs.

He didn't break his legs.

>"Everyone knows blond andriods are…"

That's supposed to tell you that they do.

The characterization and plot gets built up over the next chapters. As for the information density of the text, I'm steering terse more often than others.

2nd story is a repost of:

>>16533

>Your MC does nothing except says "fuck you" to everyone around him

This one is inaccurate.

>at the end I still don't understand who the blackmailer is

This is typically the case on the internet.

>what I am suppose to feel

Ok. So the joke flew over your head.
