Welcome to /loomis/ !

Notice: While the site is back and posting has been restored, this board is "unsearchable" on the front page and the board list at this time doesn't extend past the top 50 of which we are not, and may have never been a part. Because of this, the odds of this board's regular activity being resumed any time soon is low. I will continue to moderate and reply on this board in good faith-but other options are going to be explored assuming the worst. I'll keep you posted!

This board is intended for the discussion of a variety of artistic subjects, with an emphasis on illustration and animation.

If you're looking for books, video lectures and demonstrations on these subjects, please see the /loomis/ resource hub and board rules located at:

http://www.8kun.top/loomis/hub.html

Keep drawing, my friends.

Hello /loomis/, I would like to inform you about https://ourobooru.booru.org/index.php , the new booru for 8kun and the bunkers. I've been iffy about posting this, but here I go.

Lately, I've been combing through this board collecting things to upload, but since the art here often seems more personal, and some of you might actually (want to) have careers, I figured I'd give you all a chance to object to things you don't want uploaded to ourobooru.

Here's the scraps I've saved so far:

https://mega.nz/#F!5cpU1QwJ!GyZXv4aNFUFTxaKWeZKnjg

It's not 100% sorted, but I figure doing this now is better than never. Pics in the "posted" folder are images already applied, "not gonna make it" is for images I won't be uploading, (the server hosts officially ban lolicon, and posting a bunch portraits of real people seems like a bad idea). I'm not staunchly against uploading them, but I'll personally refrain from doing so out of caution.

Anyway, just know you don't need an account to tag or image post to the booru, and help is appreciated. Have a good day.

Same here, I really don't know why I find them so intimidating; when you get down to it "drawing is drawing" (really) so it's actually pretty absurd that so many of us find ourselves going out of our way to avoid anything, especially our easily diagnosed weak spots.

It's hard, isn't it? Even if it's just applying the same principles you already know, it chafes somehow. Still, in those particular cases I think it's natural to feel apprehensive. Hair is pretty complicated, and we're so finely tuned to see minute faults with faces that any mistakes are glaringly obvious.

that doesn't mean all of them are traced, you have urasawa naoki(monster, pluto, billy bat), hayashida q, matsumoto jiro(freesia), samurai hiroaki(blade of the immortal), yukimura makoto(vinland saga) and matsumoto taiyou(not at all realistic but I find his drawings charming. ping pong, takemitsu zamurai). Just off the top of my head.

That being said there are a number of manga that do use tracing (and, in some case it seems they just use the models directly), which is something I don't like, often times I prefer flawed drawing over that shit (like ONE's)

There's a mass image downloader extension for Firefox but I think pinterest is arranged in such a a way where they only have individual high resolution pictures available; hypothetically you could mass download thumbnail images but that'd be stupid. I use KeepVid pro to download youtube videos I'm worried will go away or whatever which is free to pirate or $20 to buy.

Reminder that the Windows Surface RT is an absolute piece of FUCKING shit but it's also the best .pdf reader available even today and can be found for roughly $50 on Amazon or Ebay RIGHT NOW!

>if it's a piece of shit why would I want it?

Because it's very inexpensive, its battery lasts a decent while, it has a huge screen and it can be oriented vertically without any additional accessories-and you can transfer your .pdfs and .mp4 videos to it seamlessly. As a computer it is a miserable experience, but for an artist it's a valuable tool for books, high resolution photographs for reference or figure drawing and to a lesser extent videos.

Damn that's cheap. Ideally I'd get an e-ink based screen to read books on but they're still rather expensive. I'm going to wait a few years for proper affordable displays to be developed and probably get one of those.

Around when I first started back in the day I'd use a early generation Nook which is even more limited-but was still useful at the time.

The Surface RT is really a terrible machine, you can't install any software worth having on it for the most part and it's so slow it can't even open many mainstream websites, but as a book reader and image viewer it's great-and it's "ok" with .mp4 videos even if they can stutter a bit.

Admittedly you can get a pretty decent and versatile laptop from a pawn shop these days for $100 or so, but the small size of the thing really is liberating if you want to study using traditional media and aren't in the position to host a whole laptop and a large pad of paper on the same surface. As long as you know what you're getting into and why it's a worthwhile investment-even if it's truly awful as a piece of general purpose electronics. I've used a Kindle HD 10 or whatever the fuck it was called that just came out a couple years ago and honestly it wasn't much better performance-wise (too slow to open some websites), and was much less user friendly.

I feel the same way about Bridgman being recommended to beginners-or even at all tbh. In my opinion Bridgman's surviving material is a meme at worst and overrated at best-though through no fault of his own. If I recall, his books are patched together from sketches and notes from live lectures which were initially discarded by and recovered by his students, which are now treated as greater than the sum of their parts and with more reverence than they were likely given when they were made in the early 1900s.

Anyway yeah, I think some stuff Hogarth does to make his drawings easier to follow, like the little arrows he often does that trace over the forms allowing you to divide them into smaller and more manageable pieces makes at least some of his work more approachable to less experienced artists. However, because much of his work isn't anything near "true to life" and looks more like Italian Futurism or architecture drawings it's by default material that only people who have at least some experience in what the real thing looks like should even think of looking at.

There's no rules regarding that; it's a meme to think that you're obligated to do a Frankenstein turnaround-but there's nothing that says you can't do one either for your own reference.

Are there any decent places to post your art in? Something that isn't like twitter which is 90% leftist virtue signaling and 0.2% art. Deviantart is shit and becoming more shit technically, Pixiv is mainly Japanese and kills my browser, Artstation is too serious, imageboards are 99% made up of anal gay nigger tier degenerates.

I'll even take an obscure site that hardly anyone knows about, I'm not really looking to "grow my audience", I just want a decent place to post art in and talk to people who aren't completely fucked in the head and in the dick. Maybe it's just time to finally kill myself.

Twitter is a great platform to save your art. I see people going from only having a few hundred followers to having thousands in an instant all the time. The preponderance of gender retards is upsetting but it's just an unfortunate reflection of our society at large-not much you can do about it except hope that people stop going to college and ruining their financial lives and their brains for (((certain people)'s benefit

Almost every platform is worthy from a technical standpoint, judging them by the userbase is a bit too cynical because you just can't control it and you can't hope to change it even a little without confronting it and moving amongst it somewhat.

I would strongly recommend the BO to log into his bunker accounts to avoid someone ill-hearted from claiming them. Particularly his Julay one.

I picked another hobby but i still wander around these parts, just a friendly notice not a warning.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually don't have a bunker account anywhere; someone made a /loomis/ copy on Julay probably long before I realized that site even existed, for example. No harm no foul.

If you could tell your younger self a couple of things to help learn art quickly and produce better quality, what would they be?

One thing I liked about the /tg/ drawfags was they weren't drawing at anybody else's direction like so many of us have been persuaded into doing, not ever that I remember seeing anyway. They would more often than not draw something they thought was a cool/cute idea themselves and submit it for the board's well-earned appreciation, and their drawings often became a part of the board's greater cultural zeitgeist.

I feel that specific requests are definitely something to be avoided most of the time. In my case when I was working on my cousin's game I was given mostly free reign so for the most part it was better than honoring a specific, flippant "request", but the only problem was I was still taking part in a dubious transaction wherein several people that were making several times my salary at their day jobs were relying on me to produce work without an understanding of what-if anything-they themselves were doing for free.

Still, in a variety of ways it was valuable experience and it's something you just won't get by drawing anatomical diagrams all day. You have to make personal work regularly and if you don't you're going to struggle to do so just like I do to this day.

That mentality was killed off those threads years ago. Now it's gib free commission and meme force attempts.

I concurr, I've rarely had fun drawing specific requests.

I've often preferred shitposting by drawing, such as drawing instead of greentexting, illustrating a misspelling, drawing lewds of some obscure alluring character (particularly fun on /co/ and /v/), etc.

Some requests are definitely more fun to work on. I'm thinking about the ones that indeed give you freer reign.

Was that Freightmaster part of the work you've done for your cousin?

It's pretty neat, I'd think something fun to do with it could be to add some screen shake that follow the movements, especially at the last attack that looks pretty strong.

Yeah that animation was done years ago, pretty much when I first started drawing after a post-highschool decade of playing Counter-Strike 8 hours a day after getting home from my two jobs. Naturally it's pretty bad but I still have a soft spot for it, along with a lot of the other stuff I did at the time.

As unsavory as the arrangement might have ultimately been in hindsight I'd never drawn more "personal work" before or since.

I remember those last 4.

That's some good improvement on the first one, there's a really nice sense of form.

It's never too late to go back to personal work. I recently found a nice little thing I could work on and off on completely at random after having sat on my ass for years telling myself I should "make a project already".

Rate my sketch. Also, is it really too inappropriate for a public forum accessed by everyone? Y/y not?

I think it's a pretty gray are because she's not totally naked, but the camel toe, nips and the exaggerated sexual anatomy in general do make it lean towards NSFW imho.
