Sometimes it feels so pointless, that nagging thought in the back of my head that nothing I make will be enjoyed by anyone and that the time and effort I put into art will not get me any livelihood and I will never be successful

life in general just sucks the will to live from me and that kinda pushes itself into my art, or I guess me away from doing art.

I mostly just have a bunch of sad questions. Should drawing be for my own entertainment? Should it be to entertain my friends? Should I focus more of my time to drawing? If I do, how do I determine if it's worth it? How do I know I'm making meaningful improvements? How do I determine the worth of any of my actions? How do I know where I belong? How come I can't draw hands?

>Should drawing be for my own entertainment?

Yes, unless you're already good. Longings are destructive to happiness, live for the moment or suffer.

>Should it be to entertain my friends?

Your friends will care for one moment. No.

>Should I focus more of my time to drawing?

Maybe.

>If I do, how do I determine if it's worth it?

If it fills your heart.

>How do I know I'm making meaningful improvements?

You will know, however the need to improve will only do the opposite.

>How do I determine the worth of any of my actions?

Oh god no, stop.

>How do I know where I belong?

Fuck, fuck, fuck, make the thoughts stop.

>How come I can't draw hands?

The other day I was going to make a thread about making a manga together. Basically I'd give a setup and a couple characters and draw some page sketches, and then people can change/polish the current pages/characters or make new ones or help with writing or other things if they want. It'd be an open ended project that doesn't take itself too seriously and anyone can contribute.

I suspected I would lose that motivation quickly so I decided to sleep on it. The next morning I already thanked myself for not giving myself the responsibility of that project. But now that my irl work is getting lighter I'm starting to want this again, but I can't help feeling that I'll be hit by an oppressive sense of duty if I do it.

It was supposed to be an isekai similar to Konosuba, where a MC representing an Anon goes to a world with all kinds of demi-humans and goes after cute girls.

If I wanted to write a proper story I wouldn't let anonymous people from 8chan touch it with a million mile pole. I also wouldn't write a character who's supposed to represent Anon, nor type "cute girls" in the synopsis.

The point was for the barrier of entry is low and the plot is open ended enough that most people can find something to care about. "Anon from fantasy world" wouldn't be as fun or shitposty as "Anon gets sent to fantasy world".

 No.12708

I think dungeon crawling would constrain the options too much. I thought of isekai because it would allow for the greatest amount of freedom and plot possibilities and it has many common appeal points, I wanted people to be able to easily split into sub-stories if wanted and swap characters or introduce new ones and such without having to too strictly link with everything else.

Also Isekai would allow dungeon crawling as well, for example there could be a specific dungeon that is occasionally re-visited, you could start a new chapter where they explore a new part of it. Somewhat related, I was also thinking of keeping track of inventory, whenever they obtain a new item it would be added to a list and then used later in the story if wanted. Thought it might be fun to track inventory like that and make it part of jokes and such (for example how a rare item was removed from inventory due to it being wasted for some stupid purpose).

>>12706

>cheat powers

no.

MC I was going to go with would be completely average at combat, and he'd typically come up with indirect ways to solve dangerous situations. He might get a little stronger if cute girls depend on it but that's it. Everyone would be kind of goofy and usually not accomplish much, except for some voice of reason character who's usually ignored by everyone else.

Make it like Diablo, where you just keep going down in a dungeon until you go so deep you basically end up in hell and have to kill the devil. We could still include cute girls.

He stole all his work from How to Draw by Scott Robertson. Literally the same work flow and order. The only new thing he added was the figure drawing section and then he took them down because they were complete trash and he couldnt give correct answers or advice to patreon donators.

As for /loomis/ hate of it, they hate everything. The order isnt traditional, but it makes more sense, especially to those that lack artistic talent starting out. How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way and few other books ahve really basic perspective explanations that are same as drawabox. You probably just havent looked into perspective enough to get an explanation like that.

Scott Robertson has just gone up in my reading list then. I have been reading Loomis (actual author) stuff on perspective and started on Noreling's perspective made easy, but have found it a bit of a pain the way he goes on and repeats certain easy things to remember anyway, and didn't clarify any of the things in the way that drawbox page does. Thought I'd share in case other anons might benefit.

If that guy is a rippoff I won't bother with the rest and just read Robertson.

The criticisms you've heard are valid, Draw an IED is just gameifying and compartmentalizing existing material from others. However I'm not against anyone using what they believe works for them; all of the authors whose work he's repackaging have done the same with work they themselves were taught (Compare Hampton's work to his teacher Huston for example), there's nothing inherently wrong with that even if it's kind of lame when you see it for what it is and come to understand that he's profiting off of material copied very closely from bootleg videos of Scott Robertson and Peter Han

There's a few grains of truth there, but mostly it's misleading. Drawabox is primarily based on Peter Han's Vis Com class (which the creator took in person at CDA). When he decided to go from posting basic stuff on reddit to actually creating a website (so he could accept the donations that were being offered), he asked Peter for permission. Peter said yes, but told him to reinterpret the material rather than regurgitate. It's something he reveals on the discord whenever it's brought up.

It's basically branched off from Peter Han's stuff. The basic stuff is still pretty similar, but the later lessons focus a lot more on solid form and construction, whereas Peter Han's is a bit more loose, a bit less strict, and has a greater balance of detail/texture/etc, but there are often bigger leaps people have to make. Peter's still by far the better instructor of course, but the teaching style is different, as is the content. You can also always trust Peter knows what he's talking about (no one's gonna question him), whereas dab doesn't have that kind of pedigree, and usually admits to that.

Some of robertson's techniques are definitely there as well, though in bits and pieces. Ghosting, some of the later techniques to build shit to scale, etc. Not the main source though.

there's plenty of stuff to complain about when it comes to drawabox without spreading that kind of misinformation.

I have a question and it's kinda of a struggle too, idk if it even has answers, but let's see.

I want to draw, but after drawing for 10 minutes something feels wrong. I feel bad, like, like you feel after trying to read a really hard dense book after 8 hours of work and you just want to get a bath.

I don't know how to work it out because it's not like I don't like drawing, because every moment I'm not drawing I'm thinking I should be and I've already tried to forget about it, but keep coming back.

I just wanna know if this feeling has a cause and/or cure, something. There's always a reason for things.

What you're describing is pretty much what 3/4 of this board feels like so you're probably not going to get an answer. I think we all need to practice auto-suggestion; psychologically manipulate ourselves while drawing.

The next time I'm in the middle of practicing I'm going to say: "I'm having fun and I'm getting better" out loud like a cultist every half hour or so. Religious sects and cult leaders manipulate people to believe, perceive and experience things through repetition, there's no reason we can't do it to ourselves

>>13143

I unironically think it might work exactly like that.

Think of how people meme themselves into being this or that all the time. What you described wouldn't be my first choice lol. Something like that might happen to someone against their conscious will, too. Religions, political parties and so on.

Even the most intelligent people are vulnerable to psychological manipulation, and those on the lower end of the bell curve who are only tenuously capable of making decisions for themselves are doubtless even more susceptible. For a recent example I can only imagine that the "tranny phenomenon" is a big part of that.

I'm a firm believer that making the conscious decision to butter your own asshole up while drawing could conceivably change your subconscious mindset for the better and I'm going to experiment with that myself very soon.

It's just too much while also studying an intensive career, when i finish that off and get a normal job to maintain myself alive i will finally go for it, unless i get a golden opportunity at my job and were needed to cast all my time on it.

Goddamn, this kind of stuff can only be done comfortably at middle and high school. If anyone here still at that point in life reads this, please go for it immediately, college and urban survival has no mercy on hobbies, hence why many dudes have mid-life crisis, they realize they never did anything they really liked.

slashing the wrists is not very lethal, unless you can guarantee that no one will find you until hours after you make the cut. The shotgun will at least do the job instantly. Exit bag is probably the least painful while also having a high kill rate. But I haven't tried it though so I can't say with certainty :^)

It's observation. First you need to be able to reproduce values, distances and other relations before you can move on. You will have a hard time doing anything from imagination without first developing observational drawing skills. You won't even be able to reproduce your own drawings or have any kind of consistency when you don't have deliberate control over measurements or how much paint you apply.

Observational drawings also have the advantage of giving you a constant feedback loop. Make a guess, compare measurements and values/colors, adjust your for mistakes if you find any. It's like learning to be your own teacher that keeps watching over your shoulder. If you start with imaginative drawing without any guiding hand it's the equivalent of practicing shooting without knowing if any shot hit until you ask for feedback hours later. Just like with any sport you want to see how much you're deviating on any single shot. Constant feedback is key.

Value accuracy over speed. Speed will come with time. Avoid being sloppy as it will only turn making mistakes into a habit.

There's a reason why people used to be able to learn painting like any other craft with the only barrier being time and money.

If you want a recommendation for a specific exercise, do the Bargue course, or set up simple still lifes. The Bargue plates are ordered in difficulty. It's better to pick something you can handle first and doing it right, instead of rushing into things that are too difficult.

I was a little worried that I wouldn't be learning a lot by just copying the schema, but I think it actually helped quite a bit. I'll definitely work through the next plate tomorrow, and I'll aim to get at least a few plates done every week, while also including some other studies that aren't from the plates.

That's not gonna possible with the later ones. It's not unusual to spend weeks on a single one.

Plate 2 already requires more attention to the line quality and 3 onward slowly introduces applying areas with value.

How fast you're improving does not depend on how many plates you complete. It is more about how much time you spend analyzing.

What little I can create is from that process of observation and self correction, and I'm getting nowhere reading stuff on mechanical perspective at the moment. >tfw reconsidering what I want to do with my life

I feel like the time I spend doing nothing at all increases more and more as time goes by.

It's not like my dreams have gone away. There's still so many things I would like to do, but somehow I just can't bring myself to work towards them. They seem so distant and unreachable, it's like I've lost that childlike naivety that makes you ignorant to how far away the goal really is.

Despite having to spend most of my time at work that I don't like, I'm sure that working on my own projects in free time, eventually I'd reach a point where I can create and even finish one of those things I dream of making. Yet somehow, I can't bring myself to do it. Even though I look forward to weekends, I end up doing nothing when it comes.

It's gotten to the point where answering whether life is worth living is kind of difficult. Not in the "uggghh whaaa I wanna die" sense, but I mean is there really anything worth going to work and dealing with this ever degrading world and suffering through various other daily nuisances for, rather than the prospect of throwing all those things away and sleeping off into the aether.

It's certainly more possible now more than ever. Something people don't really, well, acknowledge is the massive girth of resources for learning available to everyone these days. From critique to improve your craft, to raw material to study there's a phenomenal new realm of ease to get into the craft.

Or you could realize that even in the 50s people as hobbyists managed to handle getting the skills down while working high load careers.

No, but every artist who openly talks about their life say they've been drawing since they were young, every single one. Any artist with a following on any social media platform will tell you that. If you can't give me one example to the contrary it's very discouraging.

>These things, are not important. What is important is working at your dreams. Because you can do it. All you have to do is try.

It is important, because I would like to have a realistic frame of reference. It's all going to have a lot less meaning if I can't draw adequately until I'm 40.

Some painters who didn't start until well beyond their childhood:

Van Gogh

Monet

Grandma Moses

Henri Rousseau

There are also a number of other artists in other disciplines who didn't begin doing any creative work until later in their lives as well. For example, George Eliot didn't publish until age 40.

It might be a tired expression, but I think you should focus more on the journey, not the destination. If you worry too much about how you compare with other artists who have been drawing their whole lives, of course you're going to be discouraged. But that doesn't mean you can't keep improving, and more importantly, it doesn't mean that you can't continue to enjoy drawing for its own sake. If you are going to compare yourself with anyone, compare yourself with who you were yesterday. Then ask yourself, "Can the me of tomorrow beat the me of today?"

I think even among good artists, very few ever developed the habit of doing art for extended periods of time day in and out until they were getting paid for it.

Here's a good video where Seth Mcfarlane talks this in hindsight realizing that he didn't really make large improvements as an artists until he started getting paid to do it for 10 hours a day:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzHUoB4CKc0

Regardless of whatever you particular art goals are, I don't know if there is anything as forcefully motivating as a deadline. While there are many drawbacks to professional art in regards to your continual improvement as an artist who is advanced in skill, "going pro" is probably the only thing that can raise the vast majority's skill from that of an amateur

One of my own goals is to inspire a lot of fanart of my own characters so to think of it being twisted in that manner into a negative thing like that is brutal. Luckily for you it was only a dream, but from one artist to another the struggle to make sure you're good enough that your fans don't end up making you look like crap is real. In the end you look at projects like One Punch Man and Touhou and can take solace in the fact that even if you don't become the best artist for lack of time or energy or whatever that at least you could make something that might inspire others one way or another.

Make something that other people will enjoy and perhaps some of them will enjoy it enough to make some excellent art of their own-it's far more likely that they'll do so out of sincerity than out of spite.

Of course, in real life it's an absolute honor to inspire people. When they're better than you technically (as most of my peers are anyway), for instance, it feels like you're doing something right, as one may assume they have a trained eye for art and recognized something interesting in what you're doing. It was just a bad dream (it also took place in a blue board for some reason).

One related feel is the one where you find out someone fills the exact same niche as you do, but you feel as though they're doing it much better.

But the "2 cakes" picture is right, and placing oneself in a viewer's position helps to understand that.

We're all going to die and the only thing you two seem to want to do is hasten yourselves towards it.

To be alive and squander your time will only mean yourself in the future will hate the person you are now, get the fuck up and get something done in your life, draw some little stupid sketches, get out a piece of paper, draw all the shit you wanna buy with the money you want to earn as an artist, or draw what your heart desires, draw chicks with huge tits, big asses, whatever. Sad posting on the internet does nothing to help your situation and only brings you further into despair, seeing people who seem to be able to do the things you aspire to. You can do them to, if you set your mind to it, just get the fuck up and do something.

Something you draw is shit? Good, it means you can tell the difference between trash and treasures. Do you think Da Vinci or Monet just started out as the masters they were? No, they started out as little retard babies who waddled around in their own shit and stupidity, but they practiced, they practiced to the point where they were able to show someone else their work and that person would think "Wow! I wish I could do that!" Some tried, and gave up, but no one ever truly fails at art. Some keep moving forward, keep pushing though.

And thus, the cycle of true artists continues. Not of fantastic piece after fantastic piece, but of a mire of trash dotted by pieces of excellence. Some day, someone could look on something you've drawn or painted and think to themselves, "I wish I could do that!"

But if you give up on yourself and simply want to wallow in your sadness, thinking to yourself that all you will draw is trash, you will never think of the people who have no talent at all, those who have never touched a pencil in their lives, who look at something you might have done, and are inspired by your work.

All it takes is skill (additionally I like complex clothes and some girls wear heavy armor), I imagine them done, posted, tons of fans and what, why. I don't seek fame and masturbator auditory, but maybe I will enjoy it and maybe Anon right and I will like to convert .png's to money. Money for me just bills and food. No one retweets.

I haven't grown at all. Is my art really that bad? what should I do different?

I've tried growing in different ways too, like those artist support threads etc.

and yeah, I do comment, like and retweet other peoples works, of course. I generally love what people can come up with and get inspired by them..

I don't know, I guess it kinda saddens me that my stuff doesn't inspire anyone else, I guess?

It's tough to learn but don't judge your art's worth by how many followers, retweets, and shit you get.

I mean isn't the most retweeted picture on Twitter a photo of an egg? There's no justice to this.

However, you can have a small core of followers that enjoy your stuff, that give you comments sometimes, that interact with you, and that's pretty cool.

Maybe not if your point is to live from your art but still.

Same, Clint Cearley mentions how "your relationship with art changes" when you become a commercial artist (https://vimeo.com/57349573); while he isn't explicitly negative about it, I'm not sure I like the idea of being wrung dry to express someone else's vision even if money's involved. I want the skill associated with a solid commercial artist, not the responsibility. I think I'd enjoy tutoring younger kids, that's the only "art job" I'd tolerate.

I don't have any experience (I'm a NEET), but I assume everyone on here is similar to me.

My advice is to try it out, but don't be heavily disappointed if you mess up. When I say this, I don't mean as a sly way to say "lol you're gonna screw up undoubtedly haha etc. etc." or insult because mistakes are natural when you start something for the first time. Even if you do hard core grinding for 10 years and began opening a pateron for updating your webcomic for the first time, you can still fuck up because making money off of your art is mostly not related to your art ability- though quality does matter in some way, the most important thing is communication skills and knowing how to advertise your pateron at the right place/time.

Because I tend to be really disappointed/butthurt when I screw up my schedule, or make a mistake. Maybe my goals were too much or I tried to juggle 10 activities instead of just 2 at a time etc., and I tend to think "Oh god I'm not good enough for this, I'm so embarrassing I shouldn't have ever done this, I should just stick to spending the rest of my life trying to work a dead-end job, NGMI, etc.etc.etc." But the reality is that even if you stopped in a middle of your lesson, you still have the notes you've taken, so its not like you've repentantly forgotten everything. Even if you spend 1 month or more lamenting about your mistake, you can still go back after you've taken your break to review and resume your lessons.

So yeah, I wanted to really emphasize that last part. I understand the difficulty because once you've posted something on the web, it never goes away; but the best thing to know is that we were all newfags at some point- even now we all make mistakes. Unless if you do crazy shit in your first attempt- and also do the same thing for usually a decade (like Andrew Dobson); then most of the time people forget about it and rarely shit gets archived (even anime that has 20 pages of fanart tends to not be archived or reposted on sites like danbooru).

Keep your chin up high and I wish you the best. And this goes for everyone else too. Be happy and pursue those goals.

Of course but the point is that fundamentals are exponentially easier to learn on pencil and paper. Look at this board. All of the very low-quality art done on tablet I guarantee you haven't picked up a sketchbook.

"Talent doesn't exist" and "Practice is all that matters" are goddamn memes. I can barely draw straight lines and simple shapes without fucking up. I hate seeing what other people create as it builds intense feelings of jealousy, sorrow, anger, and depression when I realize I can never match those things that I inevitably can't stop consuming.

I think it's time to scratch art off my long list of things I'm just terrible at.

What's your method for practicing? Have you tried switching it up? Drawing is really hard, and that chance you're going to be the one who continues drawing for years is very unlikely, But complaining about drawing straight lines and drawing simple shapes, is dumb. No one can, but you rub out your lines until you do, then you become more consistent at it.

Take what I'm about to say with a grain of salt, because I don't use a tablet myself (just really cheap pencils). There's a couple of routes you could take.

The first is to not open the box yet and work just on paper to get up to snuff before proceeding to the tablet. If you don't think you'll progress to the tablet, you could sell it to someone else.

Alternatively, if you're dead-set on this, open it up jump right in. The tablet is a tool and you need to get your hands dirty to get used to using it.

Again, I have never used a tablet myself. I don't know what the experience is like compared to paper and pencil.

Didn't sleep at all tonight. Lately I've often been spending my nights drawing, because it feels like I'm pussying out if I go to bed. It went like shit, frankly, but at least I was putting in the hours. Towards the morning I was in this weird state of excessive alertness and somehow I just started seeing, and thinking.

How the sunlight was strong enough to almost completely light the obscured side of the ribs on my kitchen chairs from reflected light alone, coming from the wall opposite of the window, and their shadow was lighter than larger ones and gradually blurred further away from the root. How the color of the floor bled into the walls quite far up their height, but never in direct light because it's strong enough to blow it out completely. I went over to a wall and put my foot next to it, moving it to and from just looking at how there was more and less white reflected in it. Looked at my shadowed face in the mirror with one eye closed to see how much form you can make out in such a narrow value range without the depth perception. How are you even supposed to draw something like that? There's almost nothing to work with.

And that's all fine and dandy. This is good. I feel like I'm beginning to get it. But what the fuck has my effort up to now been for? Were all those thousands of gesture drawings just an enormous waste of time? Did all the sketching and photo copying and drawing primitives in perspective really teach me literally nothing? Am I really that much of an idiot, do I really suck that bad? How could I ever call the shit I do studying? I've been doing everything wrong and the only thing it's done for me is pass the time.

Muscle memory isn't that fickle. I'm about a month back in after three years of hardly ever holding a pencil, and I'm already making the same old mistakes. Your hands will remember, don't worry too much about that part. Give it while to jog your memory and the knowledge will come back too.

There's nothing to be done about the missed gains. Remember this feeling the next time you begin to slip, and keep going.

You trash is someone else's treasure. There's some art starved people out there who can't even draw due to their lack of skills, time or energy. You've got the power to turn their world around with your scribbles. Your lewds could lead to someone having a bad day's fap. You can connect to more people than you'd ever imagine if you just shared your art. Even if it's objectively shit, even if you don't think it will stand the test of time, as long as you keep drawing, showing, listening and improving, you're going to make it. We're all gonna make it. Life is not just about passing on your genes, we can leave behind much more than just dna through our art and all that jazz.

Loomis didn't say art with a pencil, he said fun with a pencil. You either have fun, or you don't and it's not worth it. This is the kind of life we all gotta strive for living.

>>15043

Use it to your own advantage. There are theories that Monet was actually going slowly blind and that's why he depicted the world around him like he did. John Paul Larkin was afraid that his stutter would not allow him to do what he loved the most, to sing, and yet by using his limitation Scatman John was born. Who knows what sorts of things you can come up with if you do not give up your art.

I admire all drawfags, even the deviantart autists who make pancake stack fetish porn. Even if their art is shit, even if they will never improve, they're putting their stuff out there. It takes balls to keep on getting criticized, day after day, with your life problems piling on top of each other, only to take out your pencil and paper, your drawing tablet, your mouse and Paint.NET, every time you can, just to make something that you want to or that you know people will like you for doing. It's 10% skill, 90% power of will. It's now or never. Don't live life with the regret of not having even tried it once.

Go be great.

Talent exists. Practice is key to perfection. But neither matter. Your art is the only thing that matters. Your projects, feelings and products are all that matter. If you need to cut corners to keep your vision intact, you will do so. If you can't draw a line straight, use workarounds. Beauty is objective, but reaching that beauty is a personal journey. When you see someone that is leagues ahead of you, just remember that once he also had the same feelings you do for people around him. Even those with natural talents, undeniable in their existence, have felt like the worst of the worst, the scum of the Earth, 0/10, some of you guys are alright, don't come to art school tomorrow. Be terrible at your art, be consistently so, and slowly, steadily, you'll rise. And rise you will if you keep drawing. Listen to what your detractors have to say more than those trying to squeeze art out of you, the more they hate you the more they have to scrutinize your shit to tell you it's shit. Stay angry and stay mad at people for being better than you and use that anger to show 'em. Show 'em you don't need natural talent and hours of practice to make something good.

On a side note, you're not jealous, you're envious. Jealousy implies ownership, Envy implies lack.

>>14937

Sit down and try both, even other methods not previously discussed. Which one feels the most fun to you? That is all you need to know. Some people get a kick out of drawing in the sand.

>Motivation

Motivation only propels you over short term. Ideally you want to make drawing daily a habit. Once you do, it will take more effort to not draw than to draw. It takes two months to truly ingrain most habits. However, it will be noticeably easier to make yourself do something after initial two weeks, and every day will be easier than the previous one.

I'm fairly certain most of my lack of progress comes from the mental drain of the rest of my life. I'm miserable, angry, and disillusioned with the world and instead of using that to make art I can't even muster the strength to persist past 45 minutes of frustrated scribbling before the urge to smash everything around me takes hold. These days it feels like my connection to the most basic forms of enjoyment has been severed. The learning process used to mean something to me and mistakes were a chance to better myself, but now, every little thing makes me want to explode.

The worst part is with this, so often I'm being brain-drained by every other task the "superiors" want, that I never know how shallow and pointless my life is until I attempt to do something for myself. It is a dark, gut-wrenching, hate.

Agreed, If you only do it when you feel motivated you lose out on learning the ability to get into it from any state of mind. Habitual practice grinds and polishes away the mental friction that leads to procrastination. No. It's an equivalent of bank of images, where you can get different variation of initial image selected from the grid. All you can get are generic moeblobs, catgirls, and an occasional elf. It's very generic. It even misses basic staples like delicious brown, tomboys, girls in glasses, and so on. >>15092 is slightly better in the waifu generation aspect, but it just looks like faces are made from an array of different features modified to blend together. Again, it's very generic and some images are blended very poorly.

Most present day AIs are not very smart. I suspect that it will take a few decades before AIs can realistically compete with humans in anything but a very narrow ranges of tasks. There is still plenty of time to learn how to draw.

Things will definitely move forward and accelerate with time, but there many things holding AI back. Things like amounts of learning data, current technological and manufacturing limitations, money, logistics, and society's attitudes.

Google and Microsoft have piles of money and more data than anyone else, and even they are struggling with AIs. Once they do, one instance when AI fucks up is enough to set back the implementation of it. Most futurists and future technologies companies tend to exaggerate rate of innovation, completely ignoring the limiting factors.

Even if sufficiently powerful and cost efficient AIs are created, drawing will be pretty low on the priority list. Most people who draw do it for fun, and companies who need cheap art can just outsource work to third world countries if needed. You also need to factor in fact that as more and more things will be machine made and designed, people might want to get something that was created by human craftsmen. Some of that shift is already happening. There is a revival of portrait painting, woodworking, and furniture restoration.

On a more serious notes, you could try drawing other stuff, like landscapes, cityscapes, or wildlife. I think it's good to branch out and draw a variety of different stuff, not just so that your skill can develop in different ways, but also because it can become tiresome to draw the same subject over and over again. Maybe that way you can build a portfolio of stuff that you're more willing to show to people who know you personally.

>>15109

Fuck if I don't know this feel. I hoped that as I become a better artist, I would also find myself expressing new feelings in a new way. But now drawing feels more like a chore, and it doesn't bring me any sort of satisfaction like I thought it would.

Are there any actually good artists on this board? Honestly, I don't understand you faggots, I've been dropping by here every now and then for the past 3 years and it's always been the same moaning and groaning about not being able to improve or whatever. Seriously? I was worse off than everyone else when I first came here, it took me like a week or two to get anatomy down and I moved on to more important things, am I a fucking genius or is everyone some kind of pussy? If you have the tools to get something done and you were shown the methods how to, then you really should be able to do everything pro artists do. It's either you're afraid of success and graduating from these beginner stages or you're not giving yourselves challenging enough goals, if you did then you would improve with every single piece, not when you reach some mythical "10 000 hours" mark.

Let me make it clear, so you understand:

You literally don't have to learn anatomy or landscapes or other boring chores for years.

If you're serious about making the art that you want to make then go and make it, and if not then do something more useful with your time and end your suffering, if you can't learn anything, at least learn when to quit.

I think I've improved proportionally to what I've put in, which isn't nearly enough. Still, I've improved from where I'd started to the point where I believe that it hasn't been a total loss-even if it has been a total (self imposed) slog.

I've worked off of most of the "canon" material to one degree or another hosted here and promoted on /ic/ and I'm not disappointed with the results, I know I've failed the material moreso than it could've possibly failed me. Without hesitation I'd still recommend just about any of it (excluding perhaps Bridgman) to anyone looking to get a solid foundation even if, after going on five years of this board, I haven't "made it" myself just yet.

>it took me like a week or two to get anatomy down and I moved on to more important things, am I a fucking genius

It would make sense to stop, but I just can't. I'm also too old to ever get fame as some young pretentious indie artist.
