Thousands march in Tel Aviv despite PM halting judicial overhaul process

With coalition and opposition set to meet in Jerusalem for compromise talks, protesters call for bills to be completely thrown out rather than suspended

Around 3,000 demonstrators marched against the government’s judicial overhaul plan in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreeing to pause the legislative process the previous day.

The protest, significantly smaller than those witnessed in the city over the past 12 weeks, was held due to demonstrators’ fears that Netanyahu’s suspension of the legislative process was a ruse designed to stifle demonstrations before eventually resuming the legislative blitz in a few weeks’ time, protest organizers said.

They also said the protest was a response to Netanyahu’s agreement with National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to advance plans for the formation of a “national guard” force under the far-right minister’s direct control.

Ew, Disgusting: Oklahoma Teacher Sent Nude Photos To At Least 10 Students

Serena Cator, a former home economics teacher at McLoud High School in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma, has been arrested and charged with three counts of engaging in sexual communication with a minor using technology.

The 43-year-old has been released on $15,000 bail. The investigation into Cator began in November 2022 after a student told her mother that the teacher allegedly had sex with a student.

According to the affidavit, Cator sent nude photos to at least 10 male students ages 14 to 18 on Snapchat and asked them to reciprocate with explicit images. She also reportedly groomed the students similarly, messaging them through social media. In addition, Cator became friendly with the mothers of the students she was interested in, sending them pictures of their sons in class or at school events. Two of the students were even in a relationship with her daughter at one point.

UN Issues Rare Condemnation As Zelensky Moves To Evict More Monks, Seize Churches

The United Nation's human rights watchdog has voiced alarm over the Zelensky government's targeting of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in a report published on Friday. The UOC, which still maintains communion with the Russian Orthodox Church, has seen its priests and monks expelled from some churches and monasteries of late, after the Ukrainian government has sought to bolster a rival nationalist church, also through controversial legislation.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights said in the new report that it is "concerned that the State’s activities targeting the UOC could be discriminatory." The UN report pointed to "vague legal terminology and the absence of sufficient justification" in proposed anti-UOC legislation being pushed forward by the Zelensky administration.

In January monks of the ancient Kiev-Caves Lavra were ousted from a main cathedral church in favor of the nationalist state-backed "Ukrainian Orthodox Church" (UOC).

And now there's a standoff between Orthodox Christians and police over the future of fate of the 11th century Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The monks say they'll stay at their monastery and home for "as long as physically possible". The monastery said "There is no legal foundation" state's expulsion order, and many thousands of supporters have stood side-by-side with the monks over days.

According to a description in the Associated Press:

The courtyards of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra have been busy with more than just the usual worshippers, going to and from its churches in the sprawling monastic complex that is Ukraine’s most revered Orthodox site.

Also busy Friday were people in civilian clothes, loading cars with plasma televisions, furniture and other items from the buildings — helping the resident monks remove belongings of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, or UOC, before a threatened government eviction on March 29.

There also were police officers checking the cars to make sure no one was removing items that belong to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra preserve, which oversees the complex.

Recent footage has shown church services led by the monks with thousands of Ukrainian supporters present. Zelensky officials have accused the monks of being sympathetic to Moscow.

Belarus rebukes West’s accusations on Russian nukes

Minsk has pointed to the practice of “nuclear sharing” by the NATO alliance as a precedent

Military co-operation between Moscow and Minsk is in “strict accordance with international law,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, denying Western nations had grounds to criticize a deal to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons.

Over the past few years, Belarus has been subjected to “unprecedentedpolitical, economic and informational pressure” by the US, the UK, other NATO countries and the EU, the ministry said, blasting their “direct and blatant meddling” in its affairs. The nuclear hosting deal is in response to those actions, according to Minsk, which is “taking necessary actions tostrengthen its own security and defense capability.”

The ministry went on to state that “the training of Belarusian pilots to fly aircraft with specific munitions, the modernization of such aircraft, as well as the deployment of nuclear warheads on the territory of Belarus without transferring control over them to Minsk,” would not qualify as a breach of non-proliferation agreements.

“Moreover, this isnot a noveltyin the field of military cooperation between non-nuclear and nuclear powers. NATO has long had the practice of ‘joint nuclear missions,’ the planes of the alliance member countries are certified for flights with nuclear weapons, the flight personnel for such ‘missions’ is being trained, and appropriate exercises are being conducted,” the statement continued, adding that currently, “more than150 US tactical nuclear weaponsare stored on the territory of European NATO member countries.”

The deployment of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarusian territory was announced last week by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Currently, Moscow is finishing the construction of a specialized storage facility for such munitions, following repeated requests by Minsk to station them on its soil, he said.

The move was condemned by Western officials, with the EU’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell,threatening to impose new sanctionsagainst Russia’s ally unless it withdraws its approval.

“Belarus hosting Russian nuclear weapons would mean an irresponsible escalation and threat to European security,” Borrell said on Sunday. “Belarus can still stop it, it is their choice,” he added, warning the bloc was “ready to respond with further sanctions” if necessary.

LOUISVILLE — The Advocacy Committee for Women’s Concerns and Presbyterian Women are calling on the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to stand with transgender, nonbinary and LGBTQIA+ youth and their families.

According to a statement found here, the PC(USA) as a Matthew 25 denomination “is compelled to celebrate and support transgender and nonbinary youth and their parents within our denomination and beyond.”

“The rash of transphobic and homophobic legislation being introduced and passed across the United States stands in direct opposition to our call to care for those held down by systemic discrimination and oppression,” the statement says. LGBTQIA+ youth are four times more likely to seriously consider suicide, to make a plan for suicide and to attempt suicide than their cisgender, heterosexual peers, according to the statement, which adds, “They cannot afford for us to remain silent.”

Government officials in several states are making “false and dangerous claims about gender-affirming health care for youth as well as threatening honest and potentially lifesaving education for LBGTQIA+ youth in our schools,” the statement says. “We cannot stand by as legislation is put in place to withhold that which we know has the capacity to not only honor their lived reality, but ultimately save the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth.”

ACWC and Presbyterian Women in the PC(USA), Inc., say they’re “proud to belong to a denomination that celebrates gender diversity, recognizing that each person is a unique and beautiful reflection of the very image of our Creator.”

ACWC and Presbyterian Women urge Presbyterians act immediately to:

Educate yourself about the challenges faced by transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming youth

Advocate for access to lifesaving medical care as well as support for LGBTQIA+ children in school systems

Inform yourself about anti-trans legislation in your state, and contact your local government officials to let them know why your faith demands you speak up

Preach or ask your pastor to preach on God’s radical and abundant love for transgender children and youth and the call of Jesus to each of us to stand and act with those most in need of that transformative love.

Shouldn’t parents of minors be the first to know if their child feels suicidal? Many of these vulnerable kids, particularly the gender-questioning ones, may have mental health comorbidities or may be struggling to accept themselves as gay. Congressman demands IRS explain Matt Taibbi home visit

The tax authority sent an agent to the independent journalist’s New Jersey home earlier this month

Republican Congressman Jim Jordan has demanded the Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service explain why an agent of the tax authority visited the home of journalist Matt Taibbi while he was testifying about government abuses in Washington.

Taibbi testified before Jordan’s Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government earlier this month.

Jordan described the circumstances of the IRS visit “at the exact time [Taibbi] was testifying to Congress about ‘the most serious’ government abuse he has witnessed in his career as a journalist” as “incredible.” In a letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen andIRS Commissioner Daniel Werfelon Monday, Jordan also suggested the visit was a “thinly-veiled attempt to influence or intimidate a witness before Congress.”

The congressman requested any documents the agencies had “referring or relating to the IRS’s field visit” to Taibbi’s New Jersey property on March 9 and any internal communications referencing the journalist, a former contributing editor at Rolling Stone who is now a freelancer.

Upon returning home from Washington, Taibbi told Jordan he found a note asking him to call the IRS, which subsequently told him his 2018 and 2021 tax filings had been rejected because of “concerns over identity theft*.”

Taibbi provided Jordan’s committee with proof his 2018 filing had in fact been electronically accepted with no issues until the agent's visit nearly four years later, and explained that while his 2021 return had been rejected twice, the issue was not “monetary” by the agency’s own admission, and the IRS allegedly owed him a sizable amount.

The journalist was selected by Twitter CEO Elon Musk to report on the ‘Twitter Files’, which are internal communications between employees of the platform, government agencies, and other third parties that appear to reveal unconstitutional collusion to censor undesirable narratives. Along with fellow Twitter Files journalist Michael Shellenberger, Taibbi was called to testify before Jordan’s committee about that collusion.

Taibbi’s latest Twitter Files report, released ahead of his testimony, exposes what he calls a sprawling “censorship-industrial complex.” This includes not only the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies previously implicated, but also ideologically motivated think tanks such as the Atlantic Council, and intelligence cutouts such as the National Endowment for Democracy, all of which could request to have specific “misinformation” suppressed.

In 2017, the IRS officially apologized for disproportionately targeting conservative political groups for enforcement, years after an agent admitted the tax authority went after groups with certain key words in their names.

A former Google engineer has made a stark realization that humans will achieve immortality in eight years - and 86 percent of his 147 predictions have been correct.

Ray Kurzweil spoke with the YouTube channel Adagio, discussing the expansion in genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics, which he believes will lead to age-reversing 'nanobots.'

These tiny robots will repair damaged cells and tissues that deteriorate as the body ages and make us immune to diseases like cancer.

The predictions that such a feat is achievable by 2030 have been met with excitement and skepticism, as curing all deadly diseases seems far out of reach.

Kurzweil was hired by Google in 2012 to 'work on new projects involving machine learning and language processing,' but he was making predictions in technological advances long before.

In 1990, he predicted the world's best chess player would lose to a computer by 2000, and it happened in 1997 when Deep Blue beat Gary Kasparov.

Kurzweil made another startling prediction in 1999: he said that by 2023 a $1,000 laptop would have a human brain's computing power and storage capacity.

Singularity is a theoretical point when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and changes the path of our evolution, LifeBoat reports.

Kurzweil, an author who describes himself as a futurist, predicted that technological singularity would happen by 2045, with AI passing a valid Turing test in 2029.

He said that machines are already making us more intelligent and connecting them to our neocortex will help people think more smartly.

Contrary to the fears of some, he believes that implanting computers in our brains will improve us.

'We're really going to exemplify all the things that we value in humans to a greater degree.'

Rather than a vision of the future where machines take over humanity, Kurzweil believes we will create a human-machine synthesis that will make us better.

The concept of nanomachines being inserted into the human body has been in science fiction for decades.

Church Accused of Covering for Molester

NASHVILLE (CN) - A Presbyterian church covered up for a "confessed child molester," and "in cult-like fashion" put children in the molester's so-called "safe house," a family claims in court.

Austin Davis and his daughter Daisy sued theCovenant Presbyterian Churchof Nashville and its parishioner Dale Lewelling, in Davidson County Court.

Lewelling is not the alleged molester. The Davises claim Lewelling "assaulted the plaintiffs in an open hallway filled with people" during a period of turmoil at the church.

Austin Davis said in an interview that the alleged assault in the hallway came after he attended a class as a former member of the church.

"I got separated from my daughter and they were telling me I was breaking the law," Davis said. His daughter was a minor at the time.

In the lawsuit, Davis claims that on July 14, 2008, "the defendants quietly accept[ed] the resignation of the confessed child molester,John Perry, from the Covenant Diaconate, with Lewelling recorded in the board minutes as being present in the room."

Perry is not a party to the lawsuit, which continues: "The defendants intentionally conceal[ed] knowledge of the confessed child molester from appropriate authorities, the majority of the members of the congregation, and the plaintiffs. …

"In furtherance of the concealment of the sexual abuse of a child or children, the defendants permit[ted] the confessed child molester to remain a member of Covenant (having access to the church, its members, and the private school elementary property associated with the church) until 2010." (Parentheses in complaint.)

The Davises claim they were harassed, and ultimately assaulted, because they "were privy to information concerning defendants' concealment and concealment efforts of the unlawful sexual abuse of a child or children."

Austin Davis claims that in 2008 he objected to "the defendants' cult-like abuse of authority over vulnerable children … who were (in cult-like fashion) intentionally, knowingly, and willfully placed in an alleged 'safe house' owned and possessed by the confessed child molester." (Parentheses in complaint.)

Davis claims in the lawsuit that Perry was excommunicated on June 6, 2010, "for heinous and repetitive sin against his family."

In October 2012, Davis claims, the defendants threatened "to have plaintiffs arrested and thrown in jail," threatened to sue them "for no reason," threatened "to bring criminal actions" against them, defamed and intimidated them. The unnerving incidents allegedly culminated in the Oct. 21, 2012 assault, during which, Davis claims, Lewelling was acting as an employee or agent of the church.

Austin said in the interview that he had a right to be on church property.

"I think they're public places that people are allowed to go to," he said.

Davis claims he and his daughter "live under a continuing threat of arrest for communicating with Covenant members and threat of arrest for returning to Covenant property," while Perry "walks around a free man" because the defendants filed "to report the child molester to the appropriate authorities."

Covenant Presbyterian Church of Nashville did not respond to a request for comment.

The Davises seek punitive damages for malicious harassment, assault, and negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention.

Once again, the nation finds itself reeling from another mass shooting. Authorities in Roseburg, Oregon are still investigating what led a 26-year-old man to open fire at the Umpqua Community College, killing nine people and injuring at least seven others in the remote northwestern community. The shooter, identified as Chris Harper Mercer, was killed by police during the rampage.

The shooting has once again raised the issue of gun control across the nation, prompting the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to issue a new call for prayer and action.

“We mourn with the families of those who lost their lives in this senseless shooting and pray for God’s comfort over the entire community,” says the Rev. Gradye Parsons, stated clerk of the PC(USA)’s Office of the General Assembly. “We also denounce this act of violence, and urge those in power to push stringently for gun control.”

Roseburg is described as a former timber town nearly 200 miles south of Portland, where the PC(USA)’s 222nd General Assembly 2016 will be held. Approximately 3,000 students attend the community college. This is not the town’s first encounter with gun violence. Authorities say a local high school freshman shot and wounded another student in 2006.

“This was the 45th shooting at a school in 2015 and the 142nd shooting since Sandy Hook,” says Carl Horton, coordinator of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. “As we as the church prepare to gather around a wide table this World Communion Sunday, may we strengthen our resolve to work to end violence in all of its forms.”

Meantime, Jim Kirk and Sally Dyer, volunteers with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance National Response Team, are headed to Roseburg this weekend to meet with the Synod of the Pacific and Presbytery of the Cascades as well to as worship with members of First Presbyterian Church in Roseburg on Sunday. PDA will be offering its support and council, as needed, to church officials.

PC(USA) church leaders are asking Presbyterians to remember the victims and their families in prayer during this time and have posted a prayer by the Rev. Dr. Laurie Kraus, PDA coordinator, on the PDA website.

The amended resolution passed unanimously and advances to the assembly.

Running ahead of schedule, the group decided to move into its Saturday agenda, beginning discussions around [VIOL-11] OnDirecting MRTI to Place Gun-Related Companies on the Divestment List.

The resolution asked to direct Mission Responsibility Through Investment to suspend the corporate engagement process of their investment policy and immediately place all companies engaging in the manufacture, sales and retail distribution of firearms and components (such as bullets) on the PC(USA) divestment list.

Representatives from MRTI, the Presbyterian Foundation and the Board of Pensions explained to the committee why the overture could not be enacted as written, so an alternate resolution was developed.

Semi-automatic and assault-based weapons are already on the divestment/proscription list. The resolution was amended, asking the General Assembly to“direct MRTI to engage with Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Kroger, three publicly traded retail companies held by either the Board of Pensions or Presbyterian Foundation, that sell guns not classified as semi-automatic and assault-based weapons.”

The committee voted 20-8 to approve the amended language, completing item VIOL-11.

Boy Scouts’ $2.4 billion bankruptcy plan upheld by judge

DOVER, Del. (AP) — A federal district court judge has upheld the approval of a $2.4 billion bankruptcy reorganization plan aimed at resolving tens of thousands of child sexual abuse claims against the Boy Scouts of America.

The ruling docketed Tuesday rejects arguments by non-settling insurance companies and attorneys representing dissenting abuse survivors that the reorganization plan was not proposed in good faith and improperly strips the insurers and survivors of their rights.

The ruling follows a September decision in which U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Laurie Selber Silverstein approved the plan. The plan would allow the Irving, Texas-based Boy Scouts of America to continue operating while compensating tens of thousands of men who say they were sexually abused as children while involved in Scouting.

More than 80,000 men have filed claims saying they were abused as children by troop leaders around the country. Plan opponents say the staggering number of claims, when combined with other factors, suggests that the bankruptcy process was manipulated.

While affirming Silverstein’s description of the proceedings as “an extraordinary case by any measure,” U.S. District Court Judge Richard Andrews found no fault with her ruling.

23-year-old Martine Vik Magnussen was raped and murdered in 2008. Her body was found under debris and garbage in a London basement. Her Yemeni killer managed to elude police and avoid addressing his guilt until slipping up recently in an interview with the BBC.

Farouk Abdulhak, the playboy son of an Arab billionaire who fled the United Kingdom to Yemen, admitted to killing the student, writing off her tragic rape and murder as "just a sex accident gone wrong."

Despite this admission of guilt, Abdulhak has made it clear he has no intention of returning to the U.K. to face justice, in part because he is not a fan of the weather.

The murder and getaway

Magnussen, a Norwegian student, was last seen alive on March 14, 2008. She had gone out to celebrate having aced an exam at Regent's Business School. Between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., she was seen getting into a taxi with fellow student and friend Farouk Abdulhak, reported the Guardian.

One of the victim's friends suggested the victim and her killer had a platonic relationship and that she had rebuked him in a prior instance where he had attempted to kiss her.

Magnussen's friends later noted that Abdulhak got angry that evening whenever anybody attempted to take a picture of him and his future victim together, reported the BBC.

Two days later, police found her naked body dumped in the basement of a central London flat where the unrepentant rapist had been living. Abdulhak had reportedly made a "token attempt" to disguise Magnussen's corpse.

The Guardian noted that Magnussen's body showed signs she had put up a significant fight against her rapist. She had suffered 43 cuts and grazes, "many of them typical of assault type injuries or those received in a struggle."

Abdulhak erased his Facebook profile and boarded a March 14 flight to Cairo. A Yemeni national, he then returned to his homeland on his father's private jet.

The rapist's father, whose wealth enabled this escape, was Shaher Abdulhak, the founder of Shaher Trading. Shaher died of cancer in 2020, at which time, his net worth was roughly $8.4 billion, reported the Daily Mail.

While Abdulhak was Scotland Yard's prime suspect, his powerful family protected him. Additionally, Yemen has no extradition treaty with the U.K., so British officials proved powerless to force him back to the island to face justice.

Additional efforts were made, largely by the victim's father, to pressure the British government to use its leverage over the Islamic-terrorist haven to compel Abdulhak's extradition, but these too proved to be in vain.

The admission of guilt

Abdulhak has previously ignored interview requests from Western journalists but agreed to speak to BBC News Arabic special correspondent Nawal Al-Maghafi — a fellow Yemeni.

Ten days into a series of text exchanges, the rapist told Al-Maghafi, "I did something when I was younger, it was a mistake."

“George Soros and J.B. Pritzker’s million-dollar contributions underscore that Protasiewicz will simply be a progressive rubber stamp, and they’ll drop whatever cash needed to buy her a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat,” Rachel Reisner, a Wisconsin GOP spokesperson, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Top-Democratic leaders are funneling millions of dollars into the Democratic Party of Wisconsin ahead of the state’s “nonpartisan” Supreme Court race, according to finance reports released Monday.

Both George Soros and Democratic Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker funded the party with $1 million each, and Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California donated $12,000, according to finance reports for this period, Feb. 7 to March 20. The liberal candidate, Milwaukee County Judge Janet Protasiewicz, received roughly $8.7 million from the Democratic Party of Wisconsin in funds.

“Janet Protasiewicz’ campaign is being bankrolled by far-left Democrats responsible for soft-on-crime policies, liberal prosecutors, and catch and release DAs nationwide,” Rachel Reisner, a Wisconsin GOP spokesperson, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “George Soros and J.B. Pritzker’s million-dollar contributions underscore that Protasiewicz will simply be a progressive rubber stamp, and they’ll drop whatever cash needed to buy her a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat because her pro-criminal record aligns with their agenda, one that has wreaked havoc on Democrat-run cities throughout America.”

Protasiewicz received just over $8 million in monetary donations and more than $700,000 in non-monetary funds from the state’s Democratic Party, the finance reports show.

Protasiewicz is also endorsed by Hillary Clinton, EMILY’s List and Planned Parenthood largely due to her pro-abortion stance, as well as former Attorney General for President Barack Obama Eric Holder.

“Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and Eric Holder – Janet Protasiewicz is DC liberals’ flavor of the week because they know she would be the most openly partisan judicial activist Wisconsin has ever seen and put her thumb on the scales to score political points instead of ruling according to the Constitution,” Ben Voelkel, campaign advisor for conservative candidate Justice Dan Kelly, told the DCNF.

For this period, Protasiewicz’ campaign, Janet for Justice, received a total of $12.4 million in funds and Kelly’s campaign, Friends of Justice Daniel Kelly, garnered just $2.2 million, their respective records show.

“While Janet Protasiewicz relies on out of state megadonors and state party bosses to fund her campaign, Justice Kelly is proud to have the support of grassroots activists across the state of Wisconsin,” Ben Voelkel, Kelly’s campaign advisor, told the DCNF.

President Donald Trump discussed the evidence of collusion between Big Tech giant Twitter and multiple federal agencies during a new interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, acknowledging Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk’s role in exposing government corruption.

“He did a big favor by letting people learn how corruption our government is,” Trump remarked in the interview that aired on Monday.

Musk, who acquired the social media giant in 2022 for $44 billion, recently reevaluated the worth of Twitter at under $20 billion, according to a report from The Independent News.

A pension reform protest in Paris degenerated into violence on Tuesday, as groups of masked rioters clashed with heavily-armored riot police. Authorities say nearly 100,000 people marched in the French capital, as public anger over the government’s pension reform plan refuses to subside.

The march started out peacefully, but as the crowd neared its destination of Place de la Nation in the east of the city center, activists dressed in black set fire to a storefront, prompting police to charge the crowd with batons drawn. Demonstrators were clubbed back and water cannons brought out to disperse stragglers.

Video footage showed ranks of officers raining down blows upon the frontmost rows of demonstrators, some of whom responded by throwing rocks and other projectiles.

Some videos posted to social media showed officers clubbing groups of demonstrators who were apparently not associated with the masked rioters.

Demonstrators in other areas of the city set garbage cans on fire and caused damage to an unknown number of storefronts.

City authorities say that 93,000 people took part in the protest, down from 119,000 at a similar rally last Thursday. A total of 740,000 people protested in towns and cities across France, the interior ministry said. Labor unions and protest organizers have repeatedly accused the government of undercounting attendance, with the CGT union estimating the turnout in Paris alone at 450,000.

Prior to the rally, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin deployed 13,000 extra police officers to locations throughout France, 5,000 of them in Paris. Announcing the mobilization on Monday evening, Darmanin said that such a force was necessary as “more than 1,000 radical activists” were preparing to instigate violence at the protests.

France has been hit with constant protests and riots since President Emmanuel Macron bypassed parliament earlier this month to pass a bill raising the retirement age for most workers from 62 to 64. More than a million demonstrators took to the streets across France last Thursday, and more than 450 were arrested in Paris after clashing with police and lighting fires.

At least 22 arrests had been made in Paris by mid-afternoon on Tuesday, police said.

Chief executive of JPMorgan Chase Jamie Dimon is set to be interviewed under oath over his bank’s decision to keep on infamous financier Jeffrey Epstein as a client as part of two of lawsuits brought forth by an alleged Epstein victim and the US Virgin Islands.

The deposition is set to take place in May behind closed doors, according to the Financial Times. JPMorgan banked Epstein from 1998 to 2013.

The lawsuits claimed that JPMorgan ignored several internal warnings regarding Epstein’s illegal activities and that the banking giant benefitted from human trafficking. The bank has called these claims meritless.

During the pre-trial process, communications between JPMorgan employees revealed a reference to a "Dimon review" into the bank’s relationship with Epstein.

According to the Financial Times, JPMorgan has denied that Dimon had any knowledge of such a review. A person familiar with the matter said that no record was found during the internal probe of Dimon being in direct contact with Epstein or being included in any discussions regarding keeping him as a client.

JPMorgan lawyers have resisted attempts to depose Dimon, and have tried to limit during the pre-trial process the range of documents handed over.

Judge Jed Rakoff denied in part last week the bank’s request to dismiss the lawsuit, and allowed some of the claims made against JPMorgan as well as Deutsche Bank to proceed.

Rakoff later ordered the bank to hand over communications regarding Dimon and former general counsel Steve Cutler from before 2006, when Epstein was first arrested.

Former JPMorgan executive Jes Staley is set to be deposed by his former employer’s lawyers in April, with the complaint stating that Staley witnessed and participated in sex crimes at Epstein’s residences and did not disclose such details.

A person familiar with the matter told the Financial Times that Dimon was originally set to be deposed in April as well, but lawyers argued that Dimon’s interview should take place after Staley’s.

Supreme Court justices and all federal judges must provide a fuller public accounting of free trips, meals and other gifts they accept from corporations or other organizations, according to revised regulations quietly adopted this month.

The new requirements mark a technical but significant change that lawmakers and court transparency advocates hope will lead to more disclosure by judges and justices and also make it easier for parties in specific cases to request that judges remove themselves from cases when potential conflicts arise.

Gifts such as an overnight stay at a personal vacation home owned by a friend remain exempt from reporting requirements. But the revised rules require disclosure when judges are treated to stays at commercial properties, such as hotels, ski resorts or corporate hunting lodges. The changes also clarify that judges must report travel by private jet.

The revisions come after years of pressure from members of Congress, who say the judiciary should follow ethics guidelines closer to those that apply to the executive and legislative branches.

The revised rules were adopted by a committee of the Judicial Conference, the courts’ policymaking body. They took effect March 14, according to a letter last week from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts replying to questions from Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), who has pressed for more transparency as chairman of the Judiciary Committee’s panel overseeing the federal courts.

Democrat Bill Seeks to Ensure Transgender People Can Serve in US Military

Democratic lawmakers have introduced a new bill that would prohibit the U.S. Department of Defense from discriminating against or barring transgender individuals from serving in the military.

Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-Calif.) introduced the bill on Monday with the support of 22 Democratic co-sponsors. Though a full-text version of the legislation is not yet available, Jacobs said its purpose is to “prevent future discriminatory policies” against transgender military service members.

Jacobs introduced the bill just over a month after Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.) introduced legislation seeking to codify specific eligibility requirements for transgender individuals to serve in the military. The Republican bill, titled the “Ensuring Military Readiness Act,” would require transgender individuals to have been “stable for 36 consecutive months in their biological sex prior to accession” into the military, and would allow transgender service members who were diagnosed with gender dysphoria while in the military to remain in service as long as they do not pursue gender reassignment therapy or hormone therapy.

Jacobs said her bill, titled the “Ensuring Military Readiness Not Discrimination Act,” would “prevent future discriminatory policies like ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ President Trump’s transgender military service ban, and Senator Rubio and Congressman Banks’ bill that would reinstate President Trump’s transgender military service ban.”

“Anyone willing and able to serve our country should be able to serve authentically,” said Jacobs, who serves as vice-chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus and co-chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force.

Jacobs also presented her bill as a way to address the military’s recent recruiting challenges. All U.S. military branches struggled with recruitment last year, and the U.S. Army missed its recruiting goal by 25 percent, or about 15,000 fewer recruits than it had planned for the 2022 fiscal year.

“Discrimination of all kinds, especially against the transgender and gender non-conforming communities, prevents our military from recruiting and retaining the best and brightest and weakens military readiness,” Jacobs said Monday. “As our military faces recruitment and retention challenges, we need to ensure that our policies reflect our military’s values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.”

Jacobs’ bill also garnered the support of various LGBT advocacy groups, including the Human Rights Campaign, SPARTA, the Modern Military Association of America (MMAA), the National Center for Transgender Equality, Minority Vets, and American Veterans for Equal Rights.

Biden said that ESG is good for investors and offers high returns to workers and pensioners. Wrong.

President Joe Biden recently issued his first veto since taking office on Jan. 20, 2021.

Biden rejected a bipartisan bill that would have required investment fund managers to take politics out of their investment decisions and to stay focused on providing the best return to their clients as much as possible.

Why should you care? Because Biden was, in effect, saying it was permissible for fund managers, who have control of trillions of dollars in pension accounts, to take into consideration a company’s ESG score (related to how it stands on racial justice, climate change and LGBT issues) when they decide where to invest the money.

Workers and retirees are angry about this decision — as they should be. ESG is effectively a tax on your retirement funds, and it means you will have a smaller nest egg when you retire than if the money managers simply bought the top-performing stocks. Workers don’t want politics diluting the returns on their 401(k) plans and other pension accounts.

Let’s step back a minute. Social investment funds have been around for decades. I’m fine with it. As a matter of conscience, if people want to avoid investing in pro- or anti-abortion causes, divest from products made with child labor or avoid owning any fossil fuel companies, gun manufacturers, plastic companies or firms that don’t have enough transgender bathrooms — it’s a free country. These funds normally underperform the market, but that’s a decision of personal conscience.

I try to be a socially conscientious investor myself. I don’t like the politics of Ben and Jerry’s, for example, so I try not to buy their ice cream. But to be honest, I love their ice cream, so sometimes I give in to temptation. The Left tried to stage boycotts against Chick-fil-A because of some of the owner’s social policy views, but the chicken sandwiches are so popular that the crusade failed miserably.

But this new fad of ESG investing is entirely different and more nefarious. ESG stands for environmental and social justice governance. The idea is to promote racial equality, save the planet from climate change, and advance gay rights and a whole host of other related trendy and mostly left-wing causes.

ESG investing is perfectly appropriate when the investors are making their own decisions with their own money on where and what to invest in. But the scandal arises when fund managers that make investment decisions with other people’s savings, or pension plans start injecting their own political biases into the investment portfolios and choose company stocks they should or shouldn’t buy.

Fund managers, such as Fidelity and Blackrock, that pool their clients’ investment dollars and pick (hopefully) high-performing stocks have what is called a fiduciary duty. They are legally required to get the best return they can. Their duty is not to save the planet.

Biden said in his veto message that ESG is good for investors and offers high returns to workers and pensioners. Wrong.

A recent analysis by Bloomberg found that last year, ESG funds severely underperformed the market — in some cases by well more than 10%. Many ESG funds were divested from oil and gas companies, even though Exxon, Conoco Phillips and others were among the highest-return stocks. In other words, if you bought the stocks that ESG funds sold, and sold the stocks that ESG funds bought, you’d have made a lot of money in recent years. And by the way, given that more than 70% of our energy now comes from fossil fuels, how does it advance our well-being as a nation by closing these energy sources down?

Another study by Boston College professors in retirement policy examined the performance of ESG funds and found “the average annualized return for those with a state ESG mandate would be 20 basis points lower than for those without a mandate.”

My estimate is that ESG has cost the public billions of dollars of reduced returns on their retirement nest eggs. This comes atop the $30,000 or so that people have lost on average in their 401(k) plans after Biden came into office, and the combination of high inflation and lousy stock market returns overall.

The good news is that more than a dozen Republican governors are fighting back to protect pensions from “political influences.” They are telling fund managers in their states that ESG is a violation of their duty to workers whose money has been placed in their trust. ESG should only be allowed with the explicit approval of the investor.

In other words, politicians and community activists aren’t very good stock pickers. So keep your grubby hands off our pensions.

Beshear signed House Bill 236 on Friday, requiring that such asset managers only consider financial factors and the interests of the fund's beneficiaries. It further explicitly bans "actions on nonpecuniary interests including environmental, social, political, and ideological interests," a summary of the bill explains.

State Treasurer Allison Ball celebrated the law's signing, saying "Kentucky now has the strongest anti-ESG legislation in the nation."

"For many years, pension investments were about maximizing returns," she continued. "Recently, however, there has been a destructive shift in investment methodology to use the savings of Americans as financial muscle to push ideological causes through the ESG movement. Kentucky has said no to this shift by passing HB 236, which clarifies that pension fiduciaries must base investment decisions solely on financial metrics, not politics."

ESG investing is a practice in which asset managers make investments with a mind toward non-financial considerations, such as a firm's sustainability practices. The concept has attracted scrutiny from Republicans due to concerns that this approach may constitute a breach of fiduciary duty to investors.

That scrutiny has grown stricter in recent weeks following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, an avid practitioner of ESG investing.

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis moved to bar state fund managements from considering ESG concerns in January of this year. Earlier this month, the governor announced the formation of a coalition of 19 states to combat ESG practices. Kentucky was not among them.

The Brief: As Prosecutors Pursue Their Lame Cases Against Trump, His Support Rises

If liberal Democrats are trying to elect Donald Trump to a second term, they are succeeding.

The more they threaten to prosecute the former president on trumped up charges, the more his poll numbers rise as his base of support rallies to his defense. What’s behind the boomerang effect? All of the threatened criminal cases are transparently political, not legal.

Americans can plainly see this, and they resent liberal prosecutors interfering in elections by trying to knock out a leading candidate for the highest office in the land. Voters choose presidents, not prosecutors with a partisan agenda who are pursuing legally lame charges.

There are three pending cases aimed at Trump. Let’s take a closer look at each.

New York DA Alvin Bragg’s Asinine Case

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his predecessor devoted unlimited resources to scour Trump’s personal and business records. Failing to find evidence of a crime, the DA simply dreamed one up. But his legal theory of supercharging a dubious misdemeanor into a felony is not supported by the law, making his case not just absurd but pathetic.

The so-called “second crime” is a supposed campaign finance violation. But the law does not permit him to do that. A local prosecutor cannot charge a federal crime. And he can’t charge a state campaign crime because it was a federal election. Either way, the statute of limitations ran out long ago. So, this is simply a fabricated case that is politically driven.

If unclear the Manhattan DA is foolish enough to proceed with his planned grand jury indictment, Bragg will pay a price.

First, sources say there’s an internal revolt within the DA’s office by senior experienced prosecutors who are accusing Bragg of engineering the prosecution of a non-crime that is unsupported by the law and any credible evidence. Second, the grand jury itself may now recognize that Bragg snookered them by endorsing a lying witness, Michael Cohen, and hiding exculpatory evidence —which is both sneaky and reprehensible. It’s the kind of stuff for which lawyers get disbarred.

Only an incredibly dumb prosecutor blinded by his hatred of Trump would endorse Michael Cohen as a reliable or trustworthy witness. Among the many crimes to which he pleaded guilty was perjury. Cohen is one of the most disreputable and disgusting people you will ever meet. His name is synonymous with sleaze and dishonesty. It is mystifying how Bragg doesn’t comprehend this. Any half-decent lawyer will easily shred Cohen on cross-examination, leaving Bragg to look like the fool that he is.

The Department of Justice looked at the Stormy Daniels payment and concluded there was no crime. So did the Federal Election Commission. Why? Because the payment did not constitute a campaign contribution. All you have to do is read the law. It’s obvious.

But Bragg has apparently convinced himself that he can be a hero among progressives and Democrats by prosecuting Trump. Instead, history will write that he was an incompetent buffoon. The case will never stand up to the expected legal challenges.

It’s obvious that Trump was targeted for purely political reasons. Amazingly, Bragg’s now-former assistant DA openly admitted it in an ill-advised book that he published. Mark Pomerantz vented his hatred of Trump and reasoned that he had to be stopped because the former president “posed a real danger to the country and to the ideals that mattered to me.”

It’s the duty of a prosecutor to see that justice is done fairly and equitably. Disagreeing with someone’s political views or harboring personal animosity is not a basis for criminal prosecution. Indeed, it is a serious breach of legal ethics that merits disbarment.

Bragg and Pomerantz should be the subjects of a legal proceeding, not Trump.

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s Inflated Case

It’s bad enough that Biden’s Attorney General has been running a protection racket for the many influence peddling schemes that netted the president’s family tens of millions of dollars from malign foreign adversaries such as China and Russia. The AG didn’t bat an eye when the FBI pressured social media companies into censoring and suppressing the Hunter Biden laptop story in advance of the 2020 election.

It’s equally bad that Garland ordered the FBI to treat vocal parents at school board meetings as domestic terrorists, to spy on Catholics, and to target pro-life activists while refusing to pursue abortion activists who commit crimes. Protesters were allowed to threaten conservative Supreme Court Justices outside their homes with no criminal charges, despite clear violations of federal law.

But all of that pales in comparison to Garland’s grandest political ploy. He assigned a special counsel, Jack Smith, to investigate Trump over the events of January 6th, as well as the alleged classified documents imbroglio at Mar-a-Lago that triggered an exaggerated and wholly unmerited FBI raid.

There is no evidence whatsoever that supports a charge that Trump incited violence on January 6, 2021, or that he was involved in an insurrection conspiracy. In his speech at the National Mall, Trump encouraged his supporters to let their voices be heard but cautioned them to behave peacefully. Under no construction of the law did he advocate imminent violence which the incitement statute and case law demand.

As for the classified documents dispute, Trump insists he declassified the records before he departed office. The law affords him unfettered discretion to do so. If the materials at his residence were no longer classified, then he has not run afoul of the law.

As I have written before, the Trump records are little more than a dispute over the custody of papers that is governed exclusively by the Presidential Records Act of 1978. This controlling statute is civil, not criminal. The proper remedy for Garland was to seek a return of the contested documents by filing a motion in civil court and allow an impartial judge to resolve any conflict.

It is not obstruction of justice for Trump to assert his rights under the Presidential Records Act. After all, that is precisely what Bill Clinton did in a similar case a decade ago. At the time, the Justice Department argued that a former president can keep whatever documents he wants, and the government has no authority to seize them.

Trump was following the same standard enunciated by the DOJ and endorsed by both the National Archives and a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

Moreover, Trump invited the FBI to take whatever records it wanted. A warrant was unnecessary and abusive. But Garland chose to criminalize a civil statute that contains no criminal recourse. Senior officials at the FBI correctly objected to the raid, but the attorney general overruled them and ordered a phalanx of armed FBI agents to descend on Trump’s home.

As it is with district attorneys Bragg and Willis, the pursuit of Trump by Garland is about politics, not the law. The true intent is to bludgeon Trump with the cudgel of investigations and threatened prosecutions.

Yet, the unintended consequence is that Trump is gaining even more support by those who see these prosecutors as transparently corrupt and abusive.

WASHINGTON (AFNS) – Delivering a unified and unambiguous message, the Department of the Air Force’s highest-ranking civilian and military leaders told Congress March 28 that progress is being made modernizing the Air and Space Forces, but to fully succeed Congress must pass the budget on-time so critical “transformation” is not delayed.

To properly modernize and transform both the Air Force and Space Force to meet real-world threats, “the Department of the Air Force needs timely authorizations and appropriations,” Secretary Frank Kendall told the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

“The (Department of the Air Force) is ready to move forward with the next generation of capabilities we need, and there is no time to lose,” he told lawmakers on a key subcommittee responsible for crafting and helping to pass into law the annual spending bill providing funds to the Air Force and Space Force.

Kendall’s request was echoed by Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., and Chief of Space Operations, Gen. Chance Saltzman. All three took part in a hearing before the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.

The hearing was the first major step in a lengthy, annual process that yields a new spending plan for the Department. As designed, the process is expected to finish by October 1 when the new fiscal year begins. But because of complexities in policy and political disagreements that deadline has often been missed in recent years, forcing Congress to enact temporary, short-term budgets known as “continuing resolutions” or CRs. A CR maintains spending at levels from the previous year’s budget but it also prohibits spending on new or substantially revised programs and projects.

That restriction is troublesome, Kendall, Brown and Saltzman told lawmakers because the Department’s budget request contains nearly two dozen new programs designed specifically to add equipment and capabilities necessary to address challenges posed by strategic competitors like China and Russia.

“An on-time budget will continue the change required to address both today’s and tomorrow’s national security threats,” Brown told lawmakers. “We must fulfill our sacred duty of providing our Airmen with the tools they need to be successful.”

Later in the hearing, in response to a question, Kendall warned lawmakers of the consequences if the budget is not enacted on time and ready by the start of the fiscal year. “I can’t overstate how devastating it would be,” he said.

“We have got to stay ahead of the threat; our deterrent capability depends on that and our ability to prevail depends on that. It would be utterly devastating to the Department; it would have a lot of negative impacts across the board,” Kendall said.

Brown, in responding to the same question, said, “It would be a step backwards … That’s not the place we need to be with our pacing challenge. Our goal is to stay ahead of the pacing challenge, not chase the pacing challenge.”

The Pentagon has rerouted its spy drones over Black Sea following an encounter with a Russian jet

A decision by President Joe Biden’s administration to reroute drone flights over the Black Sea to avoid provoking a direct conflict with Russian forces hascurtailed intelligence gathering on the Ukraine crisis, a senior US military official has told CNN.

Flying drones at greater distances from the conflict zone and at higher altitudes has reduced the quality of the intelligence that they can gather, CNN reported on Tuesday, citing the senior official without identifying the source. The rerouting was allegedly ordered earlier this month, after a US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper drone was forced down over the Black Sea by a Russian Sukhol Su-27 fighter jet on March 14.

Although thePentagon was publicly dismissiveof Russian complaints about the drone flight, declaring that the US will continue to “fly and operate wherever international law allows,”Washington began routing its unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) further south, keeping them at a greater distance from the Crimean peninsula and eastern portions of the Black Sea.

The rerouting was done to “avoid being too provocative,” CNN previously cited another US official as saying. However, the outlet said, there isalready “an appetite” to resume flying the UAVs closer to Crimea.

A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment on how, if at all, the quality of intelligence gathering in the Black Sea has been affected. “We maintain a robust ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) capability in the region and beyond,” he said.

The Pentagon accused Russian pilots of reckless flying, claiming that one of the jets clipped the propeller of the unmanned aircraft, causing it to go down. However, the footage purportedly shot by the drone, only showed a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter jet buzzing over it and allegedly ejecting fuel in the process. Russia denied hitting the drone or using weapons against it, and said the US aircraft was flying with itstransponder switched offin a no-go zone declared by the Russian military.

The new drone routes have kept the flights more than40 nautical milesnot only from Crimea but the Ukrainian coast as well, rather than the 12 miles normally recognized as the limit of a nation’s airspace, CNN said. Having moved the flights further south, it may be more difficult to return to the former routes and assert freedom of international airspace for US aircraft, the senior official said.US Navy vesselshave stayed out of the Black Seasince December 2021.

NASA has selected Dr. Jon B. Olansen as the new manager of the agency’s Gateway Program, an international collaboration building humanity's first lunar space station, which will support Artemis missions to the Moon.

“Jon is a brilliant engineer and talented leader with an exceptional history of managing large projects with innovative approaches to exploration,” said Vanessa Wyche, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “He’s a perfect fit for Gateway, which brings together international and commercial partnerships, and is an essential element in future human space exploration. The program is in excellent hands.”

Olansen replaces Dan Hartman, who is retiring after having served as Gateway program manager since its formation in 2019.

“Dan has assembled an outstanding team in the Gateway Program,” Olansen said. “It’s been an honor to work with him, and I look forward to building on the foundation he’s laid for Gateway as it plays its part in the expansion of human frontiers in the near future.”

Olansen has also been with the Gateway Program since its inception, managing the development of HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) module, where astronauts will live and conduct research while visiting Gateway on Artemis missions. The HALO module, along with Gateway’s power and propulsion element, will be the first components of the space station to launch in 2025.

For shepherding HALO through its preliminary design review, an important milestone that demonstrates that an initial mission design meets all system requirements within cost, schedule, and risk restraints, Olansen received the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal in 2022.

Olansen began his career at Johnson in 1989 as a flight controller, and since then has had roles of increasing responsibility within the Astronaut Office, the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, the Space Shuttle Program and Johnson’s Engineering Directorate. In his most recent role before joining Gateway’s team, Olansen led development of Orion’s Ascent Abort-2 crew module and subsequent spacecraft integration and flight test operations, successfully demonstrating the critical performance of Orion’s launch abort system in flight.

In addition to the Outstanding Leadership Medal, Olansen has received two NASA Exceptional Service Medals, a NASA Systems Engineering Tech Excellence Award, a NASA Space Flight Safety Award, a “Silver Snoopy” Personal Achievement Award, and many other honors.

Once established around the Moon, Gateway will host many capabilities for sustained exploration and research in deep space, including docking ports for a variety of visiting spacecraft; space for crew to live, work, and prepare for lunar surface missions; and onboard science investigations to study heliophysics, human health, and life sciences, among other areas. Gateway will be a critical platform for developing technology and capabilities to support future Mars exploration.

A part of NASA’s Artemis missions, which will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, Gateway will help pave the way for a long-term, sustainable lunar presence and prepare for future astronaut missions to Mars.

The contractor hired by Norfolk Southern to clean wastewater from its Ohio rail accident must find another destination

A Baltimore contractor has agreed to relocate the processing of hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic wastewater from the site of last month’s Norfolk Southern train derailment after local officials mounted strong opposition to the disposal plan. Clean Harbors of Baltimore Environmental Services announced on Tuesday morning that approximately600,000 to 800,000 gallons of water from East Palestine, Ohio would be processed elsewhere.

Local officials had only learned on Friday that Norfolk Southern had contracted with Clean Harbors to ship enormous amounts of contaminated water from the derailment site to Baltimore. From there, the water would have beenpiped into Baltimore’s aging, leaky sewer system, and from there it would travel to the city’s troubled Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant. Just last year, the state declared theplant to be on the brink of “catastrophic failure,” and less than a month ago one of the plant’s buildings dedicated to processing sewage sludge suffered a massive explosion requiring its closure.

While the Baltimore city council voted on Monday to implore the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reconsider allowing the wastewater to be sent there, the agency has refused to hear any objections, having warned state environmental agencies in a letter earlier this month that blocking Norfolk Southern’s hazardous materials from their jurisdictions would be “impermissible” as a violation of the Interstate Commerce Clause of the Constitution.

However, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott concluded that the city did not have to accept the wastewater from Clean Harborinto the local sewer system once it was inside Maryland state lines. On Monday, he announced the city could “shield its sewer system from the Ohio wastewater by modifying the discharge permit issued to Clean Harbors to ‘safeguard Publicly Owned Treatment Works’.”

Last month’s Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine spawned an environmental disaster of rare proportions after local authorities permitted the burning of highly toxic vinyl chloride that spilled from five of the cars, releasing numerous toxic substances including dioxins into the surrounding air, water, and soil. While the EPA attempted to reassure residents the pollution did not pose a health risk, numerous scientists have argued otherwise, pointing out that even small amounts of chemicals like dioxins can accumulate over years with deadly results.

The existence of the text message between Sussmann and then-FBI General Counsel James Baker was revealed in a court filing late Monday night by Durham's team. Prosecutors said they intend to show Sussmann gave a false story to the FBI but then told the truth about working on behalf of the Clinton campaign when he later testified to Congress.

"Jim – it's Michael Sussmann. I have something time-sensitive (and sensitive) I need to discuss," Sussmann texted Baker on Sept. 18, 2016, according to the new court filing. "Do you have availability for a short meeting tomorrow? I'm coming on my own – not on behalf of a client or company – want to help the Bureau. Thanks."

Letter to Bundestag seeks 15 billion euros over the coming years, citing Kiev’s battlefield losses

Heavy losses of equipment in battlemean that Ukraine’s military needs more tanks, artillery and air defenses, as well as maintenance for them, according to a letter from the German treasury to the parliament revealed by Der Spiegel on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner wrote to the Bundestag on Monday, and the parliamentary budget committee met on Tuesday in secret to consider his request, according to the German outlet. He is asking for 3.2 billion euros ($3.47 billion) more this year and another 8.8 billion ($9.54bn) for “ongoing commitments,” on top of 2.2 billion ($2.39 bn) already spent on Ukraine.

“Due to the high material losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, new supplies of material are required,” the treasury wrote, further arguing that a number of procurement and maintenance contracts for “needs-based sustainable equipment” of Kiev’s military need to be concludedimmediately.

The letter specifically says the Ukrainians needmore air defense, armored tracked vehicles – including tanks – and ammunition for tanks and artillery. Supplying the weapons systems also creates a “follow-up obligation”to provide ammunition, service and maintenance, the treasury added.

The additional expenses are “objectively unavoidable,” Lindner argues, because “without ongoing support to Ukraine, there is a serious danger of it losing” in the conflict against Russia, “with unforeseeable consequences for peace in Europe.”

Even so, Lindner did not want to submit a supplementary budget request for this funding, but asked the parliamentarians tofind unspent moneyin other departments, including the funds appropriate for dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Spiegel.

Asked about the Spiegel revelations on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Berlin’s decision to boost aid to Kiev “does not bode well.”

“Current relations between Russia and Germany leave much to be desired,” Peskov added. “Germany takes an active part in pumping up Ukraine with weapons, directly and indirectly increasing its level of involvement in the conflict.”

The Russian Defense Ministry estimated that the US and its allies had spent over $100 billion to prop up the Ukrainian military by the end of 2022. Multiple Western officials have publicly declared thatRussia “must lose” or be “strategically defeated,”while insisting that their countries were not actually taking part in the conflict.

An investigation by The Associated Press has found that China and its U.S.-based advocates spent years building relationships with the state’s officials and lawmakers. Those efforts have paid dividends at home and abroad, the AP found: Lawmakers delayed legislation Beijing didn’t like, nixed resolutions that conveyed displeasure with its actions and expressed support in ways that enhanced the Chinese government’s image.

Its work in Utah is emblematic of a broader effort by Beijing to secure allies at the local level as its relations with the U.S. and its western allies have turned acrimonious. U.S. officials say local leaders are at risk of being manipulated by China and have deemed the influence campaign a threat to national security.

Beijing’s success in Utah shows “how pervasive and persistent China has been in trying to influence America,” said Frank Montoya Jr., a retired FBI counterintelligence agent who lives in Utah.

“Utah is an important foothold,” he said. “If the Chinese can succeed in Salt Lake City, they can also make it in New York and elsewhere.”

Security experts say that China’s campaign is widespread and tailored to local communities. In Utah, the AP found, Beijing and pro-China advocates appealed to lawmakers’ affiliations with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, better known as the Mormon church, which is the state’s dominant religion and one that has long dreamed of expanding in China.

Beijing’s campaign in Utah has raised concerns among state and federal lawmakers and drawn the attention of the Justice Department.

A state legislator told the AP he was interviewed by the FBI after introducing a resolution in 2020 expressing solidarity with China early in the coronavirus pandemic. A Utah professor who has advocated for closer ties between Washington and Beijing told the AP he’s been questioned by the FBI twice. The FBI declined to comment.
