Cohen attorney letter to FEC appears to undercut DA Bragg's Trump case

Former President DonaldAletter from an attorney representing former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen attests that the disgraced ex-lawyer acted alone in making a payment to Stormy Daniels in 2016, potentially undercutting a key component of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's case against the former president.

In the 2018 letter, Cohen attorney Stephen Ryan writes to the Federal Election Commission asserting that Trump was not involved in making the hush payment to Daniels and that the then-presidential candidate did not reimburse Cohen. Just the News has reached out to Ryan to confirm the authenticity of the email.

"In a private transaction in 2016, before the U.S. presidential election, Mr. Cohen used his own personal funds to facilitate a payment of $130,000 to Ms. Stephanie Clifford [Stormy Daniels]," the letter reads. "Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed Mr. Cohen for the payment directly or indirectly."

"Wow, look what was just found—A Letter from Cohen’s Lawyer to the Federal Election Commission," he wrote. "This is totally exculpatory, and must end the Manhattan District Attorney’s Witch Hunt, immediately."

"Cohen admits that he did it himself. The D.A. should get on with prosecuting violent criminals, so people can walk down the sidewalks of New York without being murdered!" he continued.

If authentic, the document could indeed be exculpatory for Trump. A potential charge legal experts have floated hinges on Trump falsifying his business records to hide a potential campaign finance violation.

Trump's alleged falsification stems from his listing of a payment to Cohen as a legal fee, which some have suggested was a reimbursement for Cohen's payment to Daniels. Trump's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, denies the record's inaccuracy and has contended that "[t]he payments were made to a lawyer, not to Stormy Daniels. The payments were made to Donald Trump's lawyer, which would be considered legal fees."

The letter from Ryan appears to lend some credence to Tacopina's interpretation.

Cohen's prominence in the case has presented a complication for the DA, given his argument may largely rest on testimony from the former lawyer, whose credibility has already come under scrutiny given his legal record.

South Dakota Bans Ranked Choice Voting Which Favors the Left and Idaho Might be Next

South Dakota scored a major win for election integrity on Tuesday by becoming the first state in 2023 to ban ranked-choice voting (RCV) in elections, with Idaho potentially following suit.

On Tuesday, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem signed SB 55, which stipulates that the state’s board of elections “may not authorize” and political subdivisions “may not adopt or enforce” in any manner “a rule, resolution, charter provision, or ordinance establishing” a ranked-choice voting system. The bill received overwhelming support in the state’s House of Representatives (63-5) and Senate (31-4).

“South Dakota’s election laws are built with integrity. We have one of the best election systems in the nation,” Noem said in a statement. With laws such as SB 55, “we will further strengthen our fantastic system and provide accountability for the future.”

In addition to South Dakota, Florida and Tennessee banned the use of RCV in state elections last year. On RCV ballots, voters rank their options rather than choosing only one. RCV tends to boost leftist candidates and often leads to confusing and even inaccurate election outcomes, as The Federalist has reported.

Meanwhile, Idaho Republicans put their state one step closer to banning the confusing system following the state Senate’s passage (28-7) of HB 179 on Tuesday. The measure had previously cleared the House of Representatives (56-12-2) earlier this month and will soon head to Republican Gov. Brad Little’s desk for approval. Little did not respond to The Federalist’s request for comment on whether he intends to sign the bill.

A royal banquet at the Palace of Versailles planned for King Charles is forced to be relocated due to continuous threats of violence in Paris.

The banquet was planned for Monday.

Protests have been sweeping France’s capital this week in direct response to President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to force the divisive bill raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 through without a vote in parliament.

BEIRUT (AP) — A strike Thursday by a suspected Iranian-made drone killed a U.S. contractor and wounded five American troops and another contractor in northeast Syria, the Pentagon said. American forces said they retaliated soon after with “precision airstrikes” in Syria targeting facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, with activist groups saying they killed at least four people.

The attack and the U.S. response threaten to upend recent efforts to deescalate tensions across the wider Middle East, whose rival powers have made steps toward détente in recent days after years of turmoil.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement that the American intelligence community had determined the drone was of Iranian origin, but offered no other immediate evidence to support the claim.

Tweeting from prison, former Stormy Daniels lawyer Michael Avenatti has warned that there is considerable evidence in the Trump hush money payment scandal that could benefit the former president if the case reaches the trial stage.

Avenatti rose to fame in 2018 while representing Daniels in legal efforts to invalidate her non-disclosure agreement related to the 2016 payment. During that time, he also mulled a presidential campaign and regularly appeared on cable networks. The former Daniels lawyer lost a defamation suit he brought against Trump on Daniels' behalf.

He was arrested in 2018 and has since been convicted of extortion, wife fraud, and other crimes. He has continued to tweet sporadically while serving his sentence.

"There are many critical facts and pieces of evidence (texts, emails, etc.) relating to the hush money scandal that have yet to see the light of day," he said last week of Bragg's investigation. "And they will unfortunately be very damaging to the prosecution if Trump stands trial. At this point, you simply can't build a case on the testimony of Cohen & Daniels."

The former Daniels lawyer did not elaborate as to the nature that evidence.

Ten lawyers were the subject of a first round of ethics complaints filed Monday.

Former Foley & Lardner partner Cleta Mitchell and Michael Best & Friedrich attorney Andrew Hitt are among the 10 lawyers hit with ethics complaints on Monday in the first wave of activism from the 65 Project, a newly founded group that seeks to sanction attorneys who participated in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Managing director Michael Teter, a Utah attorneypublicly launched the group Monday, calling it a bipartisan effort to hold accountable lawyers who engage in fraudulent abuse of the legal system to overturn election results and fuel insurrection. The advisory board includes former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle; Paul Rosenzweig, who served as deputy assistant secretary for policy in the Department of Homeland Security in the George W. Bush administration; and former Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Christine Durham.

The Kremlin on Friday said Russia will skip the annual global Earth Hour event this weekend after the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) was labelled a “foreign agent” by Moscow.

The move comes as Russia cracks down on most foreign-linked groups since its offensive in Ukraine, including climate-orientated organisations.

Earth Hour, which WWF organises, encourages people worldwide to turn their lights off for 60 minutes to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Russia has taken part in the event, which is scheduled this Saturday, for 14 years.

“This year, we took the decision to hold back from this event,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Friday.

“It is because they have become a foreign agent.”

The Russian justice ministry included the WWF’s Russia branch on its list of foreign agents earlier this month.

The global environmental advocacy group has worked in Russia since 1994. The foreign agent label has Soviet-era connotations and has been widely used against Kremlin critics.

Before the Kremlin’s announcement, WWF in Russia said on its website that Earth Hour will only take place online this year because of its new status.

The organisation said it will legally challenge the foreign agent decision.

But it also urged caution asking supporters not to use the WWF symbol “as we are worried about our partners and colleagues.”

More than 60 environmental groups have signed a petition to President Vladimir Putin this month, calling on him to reverse the WWF foreign agent designation.

They said the organisation is “apolitical” and has “successfully” worked on its mission to protect the Russian environment since the 1990s.

“We are convinced that this decision will have a negative impact on the preservation of the unique nature of our country and believe it should be reversed,” they added.

Putin was for much of his long presidency a climate-change sceptic but in recent years has made a U-turn on the issues, calling on Russia to adapt to a changing climate.

Russia has been badly affected by climate change, with permafrost in its northern regions warming and Siberia’s forests hit by massive fires every summer.

Microchip’s story is believable, and he doesn’t appear to have a good motivation for taking credit for QAnon if he didn’t actually help create it. LISBON, Maine —

Border Patrol officials are releasing new details on what they are calling an "elaborate human smuggling scheme."

That's after 17 immigrants who were described as "undocumented non-citizens" in a statement released by Border Patrol, were arrested Tuesday night. Lisbon police were working to solve a hit-and-run in February, when the investigation led them to the discovery of the immigrants at the home, officials said.

Border Patrol agents say they later learned the immigrants were found to befrom Nicaragua and Guatemala.

“We are seeing a sharp increase in the flow of illegal labor in and out of Maine,” said William Maddocks, chief patrol agent of the Houlton Sector. “Border Patrol will continue to protect our local communities here in Maine and the U.S. as a whole by ensuring those illegally entering the country are apprehended.”

Agents reportthe immigrants were employed by an unnamed Massachusetts-based company, which also rented the home at 93 Main Street for them.

Border Patrol officials say housing 17 immigrants in Lisban Falls home is ’unsafe and degrading’ after arrest Tuesday.

Photos provided by Border Patrol show several airbeds and mattresses side-by-side on the home's floor, with only thin blankets covering most of them.

"Housing 17 people in one house is unsafe and degrading," said Maddocks.

Twin-sized mattresses were found side-by-side in Lisbon Falls home during the arrest of 17 immigrants Tuesday.

"The exploitation of the undocumented population will continue as long as there is no consequence. We will do all we can to remove the incentives that drive such exploitation," he continued.

More beds with thin blankets found shoved together at Lisbon Falls home, where 17 immigrants were arrested Tuesday.

After being brought to a detainment center in Rangeley,two of the immigrants were found to have re-entered the country after being previously removed, officials said. Re-entering is a felony crime punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine.

Four of the immigrants were found to be already in removal proceedings, having allegedly entered the U.S. illegally by crossing the southwest border.

The other 11 immigrants were entered into removal proceedings by Border Patrol agents, who say the incident is still under investigation.

LISBON, Maine – Border Patrol Agents working in Lisbon, Maine, identified a location being used to house undocumented non-citizens and removed 17 migrants from the grounds.

The subjects, from Nicaragua and Guatemala, add to a growing trend of undocumented non-citizens transiting in and out of the State of Maine.

On March 21, 2023, agents assigned to the Rangeley Border Patrol Station conducted a follow-up investigation on information provided by the Lisbon Police Department relating to a hit-and-run accident. The investigation led to a house in Lisbon, Maine, where 17 undocumented non-citizens were discovered.

“U.S. Border Patrol will continue to protect our local communities here in Maine and the U.S. as a whole by ensuring those illegally entering the country are apprehended,” said William J. Maddocks, Chief Patrol Agent of the Houlton Sector. “No one is made safer by allowing criminal activity to go unchecked. Immigration law violations are no different, and criminal activity without consequence is not in our community or national interests,” he added.

The agents determined the undocumented non-citizens worked for a Massachusetts-based company. The company rented the house to provide a residence for the migrants. “We are seeing a sharp increase in the flow of illegal labor in and out of Maine,” said Maddocks. “Housing 17 people in one house is unsafe and degrading. The exploitation of the undocumented population will continue as long as there is no consequence. We will do all we can to remove the incentives that drive such exploitation, including the continued issuance of civil penalties, fines, and seeking federal criminal prosecution through the U.S. Attorney’s office for every criminal law violation we encounter.”

The undocumented non-citizens were transported to Rangeley, Maine, for processing. During processing, two of the subjects, from Guatemala, were found to have re-entered the United States after being previously removed. Reentering the United States after removal is a felony crime, punishable by a fine under Title 18 and not more than two years of prison.

Four undocumented non-citizens were found to have entered the United States illegally along the southwest border and were already in removal proceedings. Those subjects were released to await immigration proceedings.

The other subjects - from Nicaragua and Guatemala - were entered into removal proceedings under Title 8.

This incident remains under investigation.

Maine and federal law enforcement officials were either unable or were unwilling to reveal the identities and current whereabouts this week of seven men arrested at a Rockland Home Depot on Saturday, Feb. 18.

“The Asset Protect Office of Home Depotwas watching [the seven men] via remote camera and management from Home Depot wanted the people trespassed from the store,” a the Rockland Police Department said in a Feb. 18 press release.

“Rockland Police have received information in the past regarding a particular group or groups of individuals, often using white vans, that have allegedlystolen tens of thousands of dollars, or more,of materials and equipment throughout the state, particularly from Home Depot,” the release said.

Two Rockland PD officers arrived and detained the seven men, but when it was discovered that they spoke poor English and had no U.S. identification, they called in an unnamed U.S. Border Patrol agent.

“Based on the limited information the Rockland Police Officers had on scene and complexity of the investigation, all the persons involved were trespassed with the criminal investigation ongoing,” the release stated. “Rockland Police and members of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office assisted Border Patrol in detaining and transporting all the individuals to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office for further investigation.”

From there, the seven unknown men were handed off to U.S. Border Patrol and transported to an unknown location.

The Maine Wire contacted the Rockland Police Department, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) multiple times by email and phone to learn more about the case, the individuals involved, and their current whereabouts.

But none of the law enforcement agencies would — or could — provide more than basic information about what happened to the seven men, who they are, or where they are being kept.

None of the men have been charged with a crime in Maine, but they have been held in law enforcement custody since Saturday.

On Tuesday, Ryan Brissette, public affairs officer with the Department of Homeland Security office in Boston, responded to an inquiry seeking information about the arrestees.

“At this time, all inquiries should be forwarded to Rockland PD,” Brissette said.

However, the Rockland Police Department said it did not book or process the individuals but only transported them to a Knox County facility.

Rockland Police Chief Timothy Carroll said the department had no records whatsoever regarding the identities of the individuals it delivered to federal custody.

The Rockland PD press release said “criminal charges are pending” against the seven individuals. Asked how charges could be pending without any public records related to the subjects, Carroll said the release was incorrect and should have simply said the investigation is ongoing.

A Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy said the Sheriff’s office did not book or process the individuals but just held them for U.S. Border Patrol officials to pick up. Like Rockland PD, the Knox Sheriff’s Department said it had no records other than the initial complaint from Home Depot concerning the subjects.

Neither Maine agency could provide any information or public records about the individuals they transferred into federal custody.

On Saturday, February 15, (sic) 2023, agents from the US Border Patrol’s Houlton Sector responded to a request for assistance call from the Rockland Police Department as they investigated an incident at the Home Depot in Rockland, Maine. While assisting with the criminal investigation, the responding agent determined that six of the subjects being questioned by the Rockland Police Department were foreign nationals that did not have valid immigration status or documentation to be in the United States.

It was determined that five of the subjects had entered the United States illegally, and were therefore in violation of 8 USC 1325, Improper Entry. First time offenders of 8 USC 1325 may be fined and face misdemeanor charges. Subsequent violations may also face additional fines as well as felony charges.

The sixth subject was found to have reentered the United States illegally after having previously been removed, and was therefore in violation of 8 USC 1326, Reentry after Removal. Violating 8 USC 1326 is a felony offense.

The Border Patrol evaluates each offender regarding their immigration status, and other aggravating circumstances such as recidivism and criminal history to determine the legal pathway each subject will be processed under. Those pathways may include administrative actions such as issuance of fines, asset forfeiture and removal from the U.S. Criminal violations may also result in criminal prosecution.

In this case, all subjects have been processed for administrative removal from the United States. In addition to being processed for removal, some have been fined $5,000 each for entering the United States illegally.

Any questions regarding the initial criminal investigation should be directed to the Rockland Police Department.

Russia would be justified in using any means necessary if Kiev tries to retake the peninsula, former President Dmitry Medvedev has claimed

Any Ukrainian attempt to capture Crimea could bemet with a nuclear responseby Moscow, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has warned. He insisted, however, that Kiev’s claims that it could seize the peninsular are nothing more thanhollow threats.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, Medvedev dismissed the likelihood that Ukraine would carry out an attack on Crimea, asserting that “this is propaganda and should be treated that way, during war it always exists.”

Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, added that “if we talk about some sort of serious offensive that is associated with an attempt to retake Crimea, it is quite obvious that this is the basis for the use ofall means of protection, including those provided for by the fundamentals of the Doctrine of Nuclear Deterrence, when the use of any types of weapons against Russia threatens the existence of the state itself.”

Crimea became part of Russia in 2014 after the local population voted overwhelmingly in favor of the move following a Western-backed coup in Kiev. Ukraine and its Western supporters have refused to recognize the step, and Kiev has repeatedly vowed to retake the peninsula by force.

Medvedev stressed that any attempt to break off part of Russia would be considered as athreat to the nation’s existence. “Therefore, draw your own conclusions. There are absolutely grounds for using any weapon here. Absolutely any kind. And I hope our ‘friends’ across the ocean understand this,” the former president said.

He also stressed that the prospect of a nuclear conflict has not faded, but insteadcontinues to grow.Every day that Western weapons are delivered to Ukraine, the closer the world moves towards a “nuclear apocalypse,”Medvedev cautioned, adding that “it doesn’t mean that this will happen, butthe horsemen of the apocalypse continue to move.”

The former Russian leader also claimed that without military aid and “direct cash injections”from NATO, the “Kiev regime would not have survived even a week” against Russian forces. The greater the supply of weapons, the more difficult the situation becomes, Medvedev added.

He stated that it is “obvious” Kiev is preparing some sort of new offensive, although Russia’s General Staff is making its own assessments and planning a response. Medvedev insisted that Russia would prefer to resolve all issues peacefully, but that the West seems uninterested in such a resolution.

The move comes in response to Raiffeisen Bank's decision to maintain business operations in Russia

Ukraine’s National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP) has included Austrian banking group Raiffeisen in its list of international sponsors of war.

According to an agency statement on Thursday, the designation is due to the continued operation of the European bank in Russia and to its official recognition (through its representative office) of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), which were recognized by Moscow as independent states in February 2022.

NACP expressed discontent with the fact that the Russian branch of Raiffeisen provides favorable credit terms to the Russian military, and that it also uses the wording ‘special military operation’ in its documents.

The Ukrainian agency has included in its notorious listGerman wholesaler Metro, French retailer Auchan, Italian cement company Buzzi Unicem, and others for the same reason.

Meanwhile, according to media reports, Raiffeisen has also come under pressure from the European Central Bank (ECB), which is urging the Austrian banking group to quit the Russian market. The ECB has been pressuring it to develop a plan for unwinding its business in the sanctioned country, with one of the options being a sale or closure of its Russian affiliate, Reuters reports.

Raiffeisen, which has been operating in Russia since 1996, plays a critical role in the country’s economy, providing a lifeline for euro payments to and from Russia. It’s one of only two foreign banks on the Russian Central Bank’s list of 13 systemically important credit institutions, the other being Italy’s UniCredit.

Riley Williams was branded by prosecutors as an “accelerant” to “mayhem”

A Pennsylvania woman who was among a crowd of protesters that breached the US Capitol building during the January 6, 2021 riot in Washington DC was sentenced on Thursday to 36 months in prison. Riley Williams, who was convicted last November, gained notoriety over her alleged role in thetheft of Nancy Pelosi’s laptop.

Williams, who was 22 at the time of her crimes, was branded by prosecutors as “among the worst” rioters and “an accelerant, exacerbating the mayhem.” She was found guilty ofinterferingwith law enforcement officers during a civil disorder, ofresisting or impedinglaw enforcement officers, and offourassociated misdemeanor offenses.

The jury wasdeadlocked on the chargerelated to the laptop of then-House Speaker Pelosi. The US government also accused Williams of obstructing an official proceeding, but failed to convince the jury on that charge either. The prosecution consequently dismissed both charges. According to the Justice Department, during the Capitol breach Williams “directed other rioters,pushed against officers, andtook video, audio, and photo recordingsof her activities. She alsothrew a water bottleat police officers and called them traitors.” She thenwiped her computer “with commercial-grade software” six times, according to prosecutors. Williams explained that in January 2021 she was “a young and stupid girl” who “was addicted to the internet” and made an error in judgment by believing claims about the 2020 presidential elections by outgoing President Donald Trump and his supporters. She apologized for her actions and said there was “no justification or excuse for my behavior.”

Judge Amy Berman Jacksoncalled Williams’ conduct “utterly reprehensible” and dismissed her claim that her young age was a mitigating factor.

“She’s not some little waif blowing in the wind,”Jackson declared. “She poured fuel on the fire.”

Williams has been held in custody since her conviction, meaning the four months that have passed since will be deducted from her prison term.

US launches airstrikes in Syria

The Pentagon has said Iran-affiliated groups were targeted, while local sources claim civilian infrastructure was hit

American forces have carried out retaliatory strikes in Syria in response to adeadly drone attackon a US-led coalition base in the northeastern part of the country, the Pentagon has said.

One US contractor was killed while five American troops and a contractor were wounded after “a one-way unmanned aerial vehicle” struck a maintenance facility near town of Hasakah around midday on Thursday, the Department of Defense reported. “The intelligence community assesses the UAV to be of Iranian origin,” it added.

In the same statement, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said hehad been directedby President Joe Biden to authorize “precision airstrikes tonight in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).”

The bombings were carried out “in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against Coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the IRGC,” Austin stated.

“No group will strike our troops with impunity,”Austin insisted, adding that the US will “always respond at a time and place of our choosing.”

The US secretary of defense did not reveal the location of the strikes, but footage on social media allegedly showed explosions in Syria’s eastern province of Deir ez-Zor, which borders Iraq.

Local sources told Iranian broadcaster Press TV that theUS missiles had not hitany facilities linked to Iranian groups. Instead, a rural development center and a grain facility were struck, they claimed.

“No Iranian was killed in the act of aggression,” the broadcaster stated. It also cited an unnamed military source who vowed that “resistance groups” are planning to respond to the American strikes.

Some900 US troopsremain in oil-rich northeastern Syria after being deployed there in the mid-2010s under the pretext of fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) militants. Damascus considers their presence illegal and has repeatedly complained to the UN. The Syrian government’s stance is shared by Russia and Iran, who have aided the country in fighting terrorism.

Earlier this month, a Republican-sponsored bill calling for the withdrawal of American forces from Syria failed to pass in the US Congress, losing a vote by 103 to 321.

China has yet to decide whether it wants to mediate in the Ukraine conflict or “carefully stand aside,” top Kiev official claimed

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky may hold negotiations but the preparatory work has stumbled into certain complications, Mikhail Podoliak, a senior aide to the Ukrainian leader, said on Thursday. (Awkward excuse why Xi won’t participate)

Speaking on Ukrainian national TV, Podoliak confirmed plans for talks between the two leaders, claiming that this initiative had been floated by Kiev. He added that the groundwork is being laid by both the Ukrainian presidential office and by the foreign ministry.

However, “this is quite difficult,” the presidential aide pointed out. “The issue is that China has not yet found its new political place. That is, whether it wants to take upon itself the question of settlement between Russia and Ukraine, orwhether it will still carefully stand aside”.

“China hasn’t figured this outfor itself yet, as I see it,” Podoliak added. (That sounds insulting)

He also described Zelensky as virtually the only leader capable of “clarifying the consequences of finalization of the war in a wrongful manner,” including to those countries which position themselves as neutral.

Xi’s plans to speak with Zelensky after his three-day state visit to Moscow and talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin were first reported by the Wall Street Journal last week.

On Tuesday, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk stated that, while the sides “have things to say to each other,” it wasstill unclearwhether the negotiations would take place “for sure.”

The possibility of direct talks between Xi and Zelensky, which could become the first since the Ukraine conflict broke out in February 2022, was also hailed by the US. Last week, National Security AdvisorJake Sullivansaid that Washington had beenencouraging the Chineseleader to reach out to Kiev, explaining that he “himself should hear directly the Ukrainian perspective and not just the Russian perspective” on the ongoing hostilities. Meanwhile, last month, when asked about potential talks between Xi and Zelensky, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin noted that Beijing “has maintained smooth communication with all relevant parties, including Ukraine,” while reiterating China’s commitment to a peaceful settlement of the crisis.

Hubble Snaps a Galactic Jellyfish

The galaxy JW100 (lower right) features prominently in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The streams of star-forming gas dripping from the disk of the galaxy like streaks of fresh paint are formed by a process called ram pressure stripping. Their resemblance to dangling tentacles led astronomers to refer to JW100 as a ‘jellyfish’ galaxy. JW100 is over 800 million light-years away, in the constellation Pegasus.

Ram pressure stripping occurs when galaxies encounter the diffuse gas that pervades galaxy clusters. As galaxies plow through this tenuous gas, it acts like a headwind, stripping gas and dust from the galaxy and creating the trailing streamers that prominently adorn JW100. The bright elliptical patches in the image are other galaxies in the cluster that hosts JW100.

Toward the top of this image are two bright blotches surrounded by a remarkably bright area of diffuse light. This is the core of IC 5338, the brightest galaxy in the galaxy cluster. IC 5338 is an elliptical galaxy with an extended halo, a type of galaxy called a cD galaxy. These galaxies likely grow by consuming smaller galaxies, so it’s not unusual for them to have multiple nuclei since it can take a long time for their cores to be absorbed. The bright points of light studding the galaxy’s outer fringes are a rich population of globular star clusters.

This observation took advantage of Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 and its capabilities. The data is part of a sequence of observations designed to explore star formation in the tendrils of jellyfish galaxies. These tendrils represent star formation under extreme conditions and could help astronomers better understand the process of star formation elsewhere in the universe.

Harvard physicist plans expedition to find ‘alien artefact’ that fell from space

A prominent Harvard physicist is planning a Pacific expedition to find what he thinks might be an alien artefact that smashed into the ocean.

Avi Loeb announced that he is organizing a $1.5m ocean expedition to Papua New Guinea to look for fragments of an object that crashed off the coast of its Manus Island in 2014.

Loeb noticed the object in 2019 and identified it as the first interstellar meteor ever discovered – meaning it originated outside our solar system. According to Loeb, the meteor’s interstellar origin was confirmed to Nasa in April 2022 by the department of defense’s space command.

Loeb and his team also concluded that the meteor was tougher than all other 272 meteors in Nasa’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies catalog.

“Intrigued by this conclusion, I established a team that designed a two-week expedition to search for the meteor fragments at a depth of 1.7km on the ocean floor. Analyzing the composition of the fragments could allow us to determine whether the object is natural or artificial in origin,” Loeb wote in a post on Medium.

“We have a boat. We have a dream team, including some of the most experienced and qualified professionals in ocean expeditions. We have complete design and manufacturing plans for the required sled, magnets, collection nets and mass spectrometer,” he added.

According to Loeb, it is possible that the meteor is tough “because they are artificial in origin … launched a billion years ago from a distant technological civilization.”

The ocean expedition is expected to use a ship with a magnetic sled deployed using a long line winch. The team will consist of seven sled operations, as well as a scientific team.

“We will tow a sled mounted with magnets, cameras and lights on the ocean floor inside of a 10km × 10km search box. A number of sources have been used to narrow the search site to this relatively small search box,” Loeb and his team wrote.

The size of the fragments to be potentially found by Loeb’s team will depend on the composition of the meteor. For an iron meteorite, the physicist predicts about a thousand fragments larger than a millimeter. If the meteor is of stainless-steel composition, Loeb’s team expects to find larger sizes with tens of fragments larger than a centimeter.

Loeb said that in case his team recovers a “sizable technological relic” from the expedition, he promised Paola Antonelli, the curator of the Museum of Modern Art, that he will bring it to New York for display.

The expedition is expected to launch this summer, the Daily Beast reports.

“There is a chance it will fail,” Loeb, who is co-founder of the $1.755m Galileo Project that is tasked with searching for extraterrestrial signs, told the outlet. Nevertheless, he remains adamant about the mission.

“Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence,” he said.

The Satanic Temple is set to host the “largest Satanic gathering in history” in Boston next month and will require attendees to be vaccinated and masked.

As the Gateway Pundit previously reported, SatanCon is scheduled to take place in Boston from April 28 – 30th, 2023.

According to the Satanic Temple’s website for the sold-out event, “Satancon attendees must be 18 or over and have proof of COVID vaccination. Attendees must wear an N-95, KN-95, or disposable surgical mask. Gaiters, bandanas, and cloth masks will not be allowed.”

The mask and vaccine requirement is ironic as their “about” section states, “the mission of The Satanic Temple is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense and justice, and be directed by the human conscience to undertake noble pursuits.”

The convention will be celebrating the Satanic Temple’s tenth anniversary.

Pharmaceutical marketers have noticed the power of patient persuasion and begun to leverage ‘patient influencers’ in brand campaigns,” says a new study by researchers at the University of Colorado, alongside the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

With the wider influencer-marketing industry expected to be worth up to $21.1 billion in 2023, the study published in The Journal of Medical Internet Research provides early insights into this growing new area, including its darker side.

“The bottom line here is that patient influencers act as a form of interactive direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising, sharing their knowledge and experiences on pharmaceutical drugs with communities of followers in which they wield great influence,” said author Erin Willis, an associate professor of advertising, public relations and media design.

“This raises ethical questions that need more investigation.”

DTC advertising allows drug manufacturers to target consumers directly, rather than through physicians. This method of advertising emerged in the 1980s, and is only prevalent in the US and New Zealand. In these countries, about half of all people who ask their doctor about a new drug do so after seeing a television commercial for it.

“Health literacy and digital literacy are both concerningly low in this country [the US],” said Willis, who notes that consumers can fail to see the difference between a sponsored ad and a well-meaning, personal post.

“The fact that patients with no medical training are broadly sharing drug information should alarm us.”

The study comes amidst a social media frenzy about semaglutide, Novo Nordisk’s “miracle” weight-loss drug which is licensed as Wegovy (for weight loss) and Ozempic (for type 2 diabetes). Popular interest in the drug reached fever pitch when celebrities such as Kim Kardashian were reported to have used it. Only a few have actually confirmed that they’ve taken semaglutide, among them Elon Musk, who admitted to his 116 million followers on Twitter in November of last year that he had used Wegovy to shed at least 30lb.

In the case of most celebrities, however, we must rely on rapid weight loss and other tell-tale signs of semaglutide use, including so-called “Ozempic face” – a hollow look due to loss of facial fat – to decide whether the drug has been used. “Ozempic face” is just one of the main side effects being reported by ordinary users of semaglutide, many of whom have been “sold” the drug by one of their favourite influencers on Instagram or TikTok. Among other commonly reported side effects is explosive diarrhea. The hashtag #ozempic has hundreds of millions of views on Tiktok as at the time of reporting.

In Dennis Prager’s recent article Memo to Conservatives: You Don’t Have to Agree on Everything Only on Fighting the Left, Prager criticized Trump supporters within the GOP, “the other divisive issue that poses a fatal threat to conservatism and the Republican Party — and therefore to America — is whether to support any Republican presidential candidate other than Trump. I hope I am wrong, but it seems that millions of conservatives will not enthusiastically support any Republican presidential nominee other than Trump. These people might be called “Only Trumpers.” And because of their numbers, they pose an even greater threat to Republican unity than did the “Never Trumpers” Prager wrote.

Prager is also a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. In the same article, Prager wrote, “A prominent conservative recently tweeted that every Republican who supports aiding Ukraine is a RINO (Republican In Name Only). That would mean that conservatives such as Mark Levin, Ben Shapiro, and I, not to mention more than 40% of all Republicans, are RINOs.”

Prager’s recent comments lead some to believe that Prager is no true friend of the Conservative Movement.

Downtown staple is closing

BIDDEFORD —After 15 years in business downtown, Bebe’s Burritos and Cantina is closing.

Saturday will be the last day for the Mexican restaurant and bar at its 140 Main St. location, Shilyn Moulton, who manages Bebe’s along with her sister Kieyana Francis, said Tuesday. Moulton and Francis’ mother owns the business.

Moulton said she was notified last Friday that the restaurant was losing its lease. On Monday, building owner Steve Ebling said he was not at liberty to discuss the situation at this time, nor any future plans he has for the space.

“This isn’t easy for any of us,” said Moulton.

In more than a decade of business downtown, she said Bebe’s has built an extensive foundation of regulars, such as local school teachers who frequent the bar to wind down on Fridays.

And those customers have been seeing the news on social media, said Moulton. “They’re as devastated as we are,” she said.

Moulton said local youth sports teams have for the last several months been selling pamphlets that include coupons for Bebe’s, and she would like as many people as possible to come in and use them in the next few days.

Although it has been hard news to handle, Moulton said her family hopes to reopen Bebe’s in the near future.

“We are looking to relocate,” she said. “We are hoping we can find a place not too far from here to reopen.”

Moulton said she’s expecting a large turnout at Bebe’s Saturday night as part of a send-off party.

“It’s going to be pretty emotional for all of us,” she said of the event.

Baharav-Miara: PM’s declaration that he will get involved in judicial overhaul violates court ruling; this and any further such acts ‘illegal and tainted by conflict of interest’

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday that he has violated the conflict of interest agreement that allows him to govern during his ongoing corruption trial, and called his statements Thursday night and any further involvement in the coalition’s judicial overhaul “illegal and tainted by a conflict of interest.”

The harshly worded letter from Baharav-Miara came after Netanyahu announced that he would henceforth ignore the conflict of interest deal and deeply involve himself in the unfolding, deeply controversial judicial overhaul legislation.

The 2020 deal forbade Netanyahu from making senior law enforcement and judicial appointments or getting involved in legislative matters that may impact his ongoing trial on corruption charges. Netanyahu’s announcement Thursday night came hours after the Knesset passed a law designed to shield him from being removed from office for breaking its boundaries.

“In your speech last night, you referred to the initiatives concerning the judicial system, and in particular to the composition of the committee for the appointment of judges, and announced that you are now directly involved in these initiatives,” Baharav-Miara wrote.

“In doing so, you violated the ruling of the Supreme Court, according to which, as a prime minister accused of crimes, you must refrain from taking actions that give rise to a reasonable fear of the existence of a conflict of interest between your personal interests relating to the criminal proceedings and your role as prime minister,” she wrote.

Emails published earlier this week show the office of then-Vice President Joe Biden colluding with a Bloomberg News reporter to bury a damaging story about Hunter Biden.

The emails – obtained by America First Legal (AFL) through its ongoing lawsuit against the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) – show the President of Hunter’s firm Rosemont Seneca Partners, Eric Schwerin, checking in with the Vice President’s media team about potential follow up stories to a New York Times article in 2015.

The Times on December 8th of that year suggested the “credibility of the vice president’s anticorruption message may have been undermined” by Hunter’s role on the board of Burisma Holdings. (Can you imagine such a story being written today?)

Schwerin sent an inquiry to Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s communications director at the time, and who would eventually serve as White House communications director until stepping down last month, asking about “follow up” pieces to the story.

Bedingfield replied that she had been in discussion with a Bloomberg reporter who assured Biden’s team she was “doing everything she can to not use it.”
