Though it was released almost a year ago, I have the same opinion of it.
It’s about an 8/10, niche RPG game.
If you like the characters and the humor, you’ll probably like it, and forgive it for its flaws.
If you don’t, you’ll probably hate it.
Surprisingly, there are many people who like this type of game. Though I did work hard, there’s definitely a lot of luck involved in having a game become this popular. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if I never made a game as successful again. That’s fine with me though.
Not only did I not expect this level of popularity, but initially, I was afraid of it. I didn’t want UNDERTALE to become tiring for people, or become spoiled before anyone even got a chance to play it. Early on (this was probably excessive) I even tried to contact certain Let’s Players to tell them not to make any content about it.
But, the game became very popular. Unavoidable, even. At the height of its popularity, “not liking the game” felt like a cardinal sin to many fans online. In reaction to these circumstances, others began actively hate the game, creating an endless whirlwind of discourse…
Like a thunderclap to a small dog, all of this attention stressed me out. And every time it seemed to die down, something revived it, such as the GameFAQs contest, the award shows, bizarre theory videos, and so on. At times, I wished I had a way to quell the attention. I felt a strange powerlessness. (And guilt, for feeling stressed when the success of the game SHOULD be something I’m nothing but ecstatic about.)
At the same time, countless wonderful things were happening. People told me the game helped them through a difficult part of their life. Others told me that the game had made them laugh, or cry, or say “I want to be kinder.” Many young kids told me they wanted to create games or music because of it. And, on a personal level, because of its popularity, I have been able to help myself and many people in my life. (And, hopefully, in the future, I can help many other people because of it, too.)
So, ultimately, it’s a good thing that the game reached so many people, and I’m very, very, very, very, very, very, thankful to everyone that supported it, and everyone that helped me make it.

And thank you to anyone who has created fanworks for this game over the past year. I’ve been in fandoms my whole life. I drew Cave Story characters in the margins of my 7th grade history class notes. So it’s amazing to see something I created incite a similar passion in other people.

I'm happy with the way things ended, and I intend to preserve that. The characters of this game, they grew on me. A lot. They weren't just sprites on my computer screen. They felt real. They had hopes, they had dreams, they had flaws and they had fears. We didn't understand each other at first… But through compassion, understanding and MERCY, we overcame our differences. But were we really different to begin with? Human? Monster? What does that really mean? The world I wandered through, which seemed so cold and dark in the beginning, slowly faded away, as I realized I wasn't alone on this journey. Who would have thought? We ended up being friends. They made me smile, They made me laugh. And I'm not ashamed to say that… They also made me cry.
Sometimes, I would pass through a corridor, wondering about them, about what they were doing, about what they were thinking right now. So I'd grab my cellphone and strike up a conversation with them. I was talking out loud, asking them about what was going on in their lives. And guess what? They answered me, i could hear their voice reach me, and we talked for hours. Toriel and Sans were cracking some random bad jokes, I laughed so much when Undyne told me about how she surprised Papyrus pretending to drive on his bed! And Alphys… We talked a lot about her deep fears of coming to terms with her true-self. Eventually, I think our chats both made us stronger.
To think that they finally made it to the surface… I can't image how they felt when they took their first breath of fresh air. Ahah, I was almost jealous. But i'm glad, i wouldn't have it any other way.
And why would I throw all that away? Because some jaded flower is urging me to play a "game" again? Well guess what, Flowey: that was never a game for me to begin with.
I will never reset my Save, i will never let my friends down, and knowing that they're all probably waiting for me right now fills me with:
DETERMINATION.

This image right here came out right after the game was released, it's drawn like a Disney movie, Toriel has a good size difference to Frisk, Frisk's head is too big but it's not bad, what Toriel is doing is perfect, every god damn thing looks comfy as fuck look at it all. Why the hell did this artist draw Frisk as a white little boy? I don't know but it's like it's literally me and I project myself right in.
I have no idea who this artist is or what their motivation was but this is a god-tier image, it's been my phone wallpaper since November. Fucker didn't even put a signature on it, he/she's one of the great unsung heroes of our generation and I don't want to google Undertale art anymore.
Okay fellas. Disney just announced a live-action/animated adaptation of Undertale for theatrical release. Of course, this isn't real, but if it was, who will star in it? Who will direct it? What style would it reach? An old Disney classic or a modern Marvel funhouse?

That being said. killing them isn't that much of a deal, but that just reset the game, so you'll find them infinite times that way. Pretty clever.
However, there's the "ACT" option, where you can "discourage" them. Dodging enough attacks leads into some new set of random attacks, and more dialogs, but I've yet to get all the way down the rabbithole.
Anyone here fancy enough about it to pull it off and post results?

If monsters went to the surface wouldn't they be alright if they all bought guns and shit because they shoot magic as a way to say hello and they would only use the guns for self-defense. That way if dindus show up they can whip out a 1911 and dump a mag on them. The humans have a castle city so naturally I assume they have castle law. If they want to not hurt humans they could also use blast knuckles.

it's pretty [spoiler]bare bones[spoiler] at the moment, but hopefully the Dev will get his shit together enough to get a working overworld, photoshop-like layering and maskes..
Doorframes are universally 2 meters in height, which means the doorframe in the pacifist ending can be used to measure the approximate height of most characters
this doorframe is 104 pixels tall, which means each given character's approximate height in centimeters is their height in pixels times 2
Frisk is 116cm, Aans is slightly taller, 120cm, Asgore is only 216cm (without horns), which is surprising considering how many of you think he's like 10 feet

How strange to not find this anywhere on the net. Does anyone know about Loox's infinite EXP exploit?
Everytime you pick on him during the battle, you get an extra 5 EXP bonus when killing him, and its accumulable. You can do this as many times as you like too, e.g: pick on him five times during battle, you'll his 7 exp points + 25 extra exp, for a total of 32 exp points.

Game Theory? or On the nature of Flowey/Asriel
So I've been wondering for a while what's going on, exactly, with Flowey, because something about him just doesn't add up at all. We know that robots are made of metal and magic, but what is Flowey made of? The part that I feel most opposed to is the claim that Flowey does not have a soul. This is a fairly typical stance because Flowey is kind of a jerk, and is commonly said to be emotionless, and because Alphys said so. The first part is irrelevant, the second is incorrect (Flowey does feel emotions, just not positive ones; he frequently expresses fear, frustration, and lots of anger), and the last part… well, if you've gotten this far and trust everything Alphys says… you're doin' it wrong. Besides, how COULD she know? She didn't even know that the flower she chose was the one dusted by Asriel's ashes. She thought it was just another flower and picked it at random. She just assumed that it didn't have a soul because flowers typically don't.
Either way, it doesn't make sense that a mere flower could suddenly gain sentience simply from Determination. Determination is a power source, not a mind or soul. It wouldn't make it move. As someone else pointed out in another thread, how could a soulless being that's not a monster even be able to use magic attacks in the first place? Monsters are made mostly of magic so their souls are better attuned to it. Their souls essentially are their bodies, and thus are their magic. This is why their bodies and attacks weaken when their souls lose the will to fight. If Flowey had no soul, and no monster body, where could his attacks come from? There wouldn't be any magic to use.
But the most important reason why I can't accept the soulless-Flowey hypothesis is because it would mean the child you encounter at the end of the game WOULD NOT BE ASRIEL! It would be just something like a copy, clone, or echo of him given some weird agency and somehow pulling his memories from the aether.
It's said that the "Boss Monsters" have souls that can persist for a moment after death, something that doesn't happen with other monsters. Considering that they're the defacto rulers of the Underground, this might just have something to do with a kind of innate strength or power. The more powerful the monster, the longer the soul can last. Strength of the body is strength of the soul because they are close to the same thing. By absorbing Chara's soul, Asriel gained exponentially greater power, and so perhaps his soul could persist for exponentially longer after death. Long enough to sit inert on that flower until it was injected with Determination, maybe. Then, it wasn't until he absorbed the human souls and all the other monsters' that Flowey was able to recreate his physical body and regain a vessel that could process positive emotions, and thus returned to being completely Asriel, body and soul.
Well, at least that's my theory on the whole thing. It makes me feel better knowing that Asriel is still in Flowey somewhere, that Flowey isn't just some corrupted copy that carries his face around like a death's mask. After all, at the end of the Neutral Ending, he DID tell me how I could go back and change things so as to fix what happened. Was that just Flowey manipulating me into putting the pieces in place so he could gain the equivalent to seven human souls, because clearly six wasn't enough to defeat me? That's entirely possible. But I choose to interpret that as kindness, instead. A little bit of the old Asriel peeking out from behind Flowey to help us both get our "happy ending". Kindness doesn't come from dust; it comes from the soul.

Regarding FUN values and plot exploration.
I've been a bit curious as I've played. Has Fox confirmed that all possible story paths have been explored? i.e. neutral, pacifist, genocide, post genocide pacifist?
Is that everything worth hunting down? The only thing that makes me wonder is his comment about FUN values and how they affect endings and such. Of course befriending/killing the main characters are more obvious fun value changers but what about more nuanced things like sparing only certain non boss characters or something along those lines.
Playing from the perspective of the mystery solver the game let's us know that it's in on the joke. The game knows that we're "playing it".
I've noticed I can run two instances of the game at once. Is this only a pirate thing or can steam do this as well? I don't have the time to mess around with this but I was thinking about what affect making different choices in different instances of the game might create. Probably nothing, but it got me thinking at least.
The aforementioned method sounds very cryptic but I feel like that train of thought is the one I need to discover the truth.
If I had to hazard a guess I feel like there's something left undiscovered in either the core or the secret lab.
I know a lot of people like Asriel, but honestly? I miss that we had to trade the delightful psychopathy of Flowey for him. I just can't really connect the two characters since they're so different, even when Asriel's at his most sinister in the true ending, and so I feel like the actions of one don't fully carry over to the other.
Is this just me?
What Keeps Monsters Going?
So according to Alphys's research notes, we know that monsters can be injected with "determination" but the bigger question here is, what is within monsters that substitute the absence of determination?
We know that in order for the Boss Monsters to be considered this, canonically, they must have some driving force or at the very least something more than just the will to exist?
In this case I ask the question of;
What does Sans possess in place of Determination that powers him besides time powers?
Does Undyne possess the buddings of determination enough to be able to DEFY death itself or is it something else?
What does Asgore possess enough of, that he can channel it into his weapon?
Are they all just magic? Like how the dummy you encounter in the sewer is a ghost, but what is a ghost in this world? Is it a devoidment of life, in this case or is it merely something stronger that survives once the will to live has surpassed?
And if that were the case, how would Mettaton function, being a ghost in a body, when we all know robots are just metal and magic?
Does this mean that Mettaton possesses some form of perverse determination, even as a ghost?
For that matter, can you even kill a ghost when it doesn't have the will to live in the first place?
