Abstract

Eighty percent of the estimated 600 million domestic cats in the world are free-roaming. These cats typically experience suboptimal welfare and inflict high levels of predation on wildlife. Additionally, euthanasia of healthy animals in overpopulated shelters raises ethical considerations. While surgical sterilization is the mainstay of pet population control, there is a need for efficient, safe, and cost-effective permanent contraception alternatives. Herein, we report evidence that a single intramuscular treatment with an adeno-associated viral vector delivering an anti-Müllerian hormone transgene produces long-term contraception in the domestic cat. Treated females are followed for over two years, during which transgene expression, anti-transgene antibodies, and reproductive hormones are monitored. Mating behavior and reproductive success are measured during two mating studies. Here we show that ectopic expression of anti-Müllerian hormone does not impair sex steroids nor estrous cycling, but prevents breeding-induced ovulation, resulting in safe and durable contraception in the female domestic cat.

Yellen Says Funding Ukraine’s War Effort Is the Best Boost for Global Economy

Redoubling financial backing for Ukraine in its war with Russia is the “single best” way to aid the global economy, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday.

She added boosting emerging economies and tackling debt distress also have their role to play alongside sending billions in taxpayer dollars to Kyiv.

AFP reports Yellen used the sidelines of a G20 finance ministers’ summit in India to reveal she would “push back” on criticism there was a tradeoff between aid to Ukraine and developing nations.

“Ending this war is first and foremost a moral imperative,” she told reporters in Gandhinagar. “But it’s also the single best thing we can do for the global economy.”

Her comments on Ukraine aid came one week after former Vice President Mike Pence said during an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday that defending Ukraine is in the best interest of the U.S., even though it is not “our war.”

House Votes To Overturn Pentagon Policy Protecting Abortion Access For Troops

The Republican-led House of Representatives voted in favor of forcing the Pentagon to rescind a rule facilitating abortion access for servicemembers on Thursday.

In a nearly party line vote, the House decided 221 to 213 on an amendment prohibiting the Department of Defense (DOD) from reimbursing servicemembers for travel expenses incurred when seeking abortions and a handful of other reproductive procedures out-of-state, records show. Lawmakers also tackled DOD funding of transgender treatments in a package designed to maintain GOP unity and allow the yearly defense policy bill to move forward on the House floor, The New York Times reported.

“This illegal Biden-endorsed policy has no place in our military,” GOP Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas, who sponsored the amendment, said, according to the NYT. “The taxpayer money is going directly to support abortions, and anyone in this chamber that says differently is blatantly lying to the American people.”

Inclusion of the amendments could imperil Democratic support for the final package, where some buy-in is needed to overcome hurdles on policy items where the GOP does not agree, the NYT reported.

“The MAGA majority is using our defense bill to get one stop closer to the only thing they really care about: a nationwide abortion ban,” Democratic Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, the Democratic whip, said, according to the NYT.

I have always voted in Congress based on the issue, not the author, & looked for common ground & dialogue wherever possible. Thousands of kids will die because of cluster bombs. I will vote tonight to ban them regardless of who introduces the amendment & hope others do the same.

While Mr Marles may not have yet briefed China, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the US expected a call in the coming weeks between President Biden and China’s chairman Xi Jinping.

In response, Mr Wenbin said China would maintain “necessary communication” in the wake of the AUKUS announcement once the US showed “sincerity”.

“We believe that the value and significance of communication lies in enhancing mutual understanding and managing differences,” he said.

“Communication should not be carried out for the sake of communication. The US side should show sincerity, work with China to take concrete actions to help bring China-US relations back to the right track.”

While Mr Wenbin’s comments were couched in diplomatic restraint, the state-affiliated Global Times newspaper, designated by the US State Department as a “foreign mission”, or the propaganda arm of the Chinese Communist Party, framed AUKUS as a “time bomb” that would make Australia pay an “expensive price”.

Australia, the US and UK have hit back at China’s attacks on the AUKUS pact, saying it will be impossible for Australia to convert uranium fuelling the planned fleet of nuclear-powered submarines into weapons without ruining the boats.

As a major United Nations conference on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons gets under way in New York, the three AUKUS partners released a working paper reaffirming a commitment not to breach international law through the transfer of radioactive material and to establish a verification process for the atomic watchdog.

“Partners are committed to doing this in a way that meets the highest possible non-proliferation standards including by providing complete, welded power units so that Australia need not conduct uranium enrichment nor fuel fabrication,” the working paper said.

The AUKUS agreement will lead to the US and UK helping Australia acquire as many as eight nuclear-powered submarines but – controversially – proposes to use highly enriched uranium in the boats’ reactors instead of low-enriched uranium.

Using low-enriched uranium, as navies such as France does, would require the reactors to be refuelled after 10 years or so, whereas highly enriched uranium lasts for the anticipated three-decade life of the submarine. Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America recently held meetings of the AUKUS Joint Steering Groups, which were established as part of the governance structure of the AUKUS partnership in September 2021. The delegations discussed the intensive work under way and the progress that has been made since the announcement of AUKUS. Both meetings were held at the Pentagon, with additional sessions at the White House where the delegations met with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

The Joint Steering Group for Australia’s Nuclear-Powered Submarine Program met on July 25-28, continuing its progress on defining the optimal pathway to provide Australia with conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines at the earliest possible date while ensuring the highest standards of nuclear stewardship, including the responsible planning, operation, application and management of nuclear material, technology and facilities.

The participants took stock of ongoing progress to deliver on our leaders’ commitment to set the highest possible non-proliferation standards, including through continued close consultation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Last Thursday, Blumenthal gave a presentation to the UN Security Council. The presentation was prepared with the help of Wyatt Reed, Alex Rubinstein and Anya Parampil.

Wyatt has first-hand experience with the subject of the presentation, Blumenthal explained, “as a journalist whose hotel in Donetsk was targeted with a US-made howitzer by the Ukrainian military in October 2022. He was 100 meters away when the strike hit, and was nearly killed.”

On 28 June, the US Pentagon announced plans to send an additional $500 million worth of military aid to Ukraine. A little over two weeks earlier, on 12 June, Kiev “lost” 16 US-made armoured vehicles. “So, what did the Pentagon do? It simply passed that bill down to average US taxpayers like myself, charging us another $325 million to replace Ukraine’s squandered military stock,” Blumenthal said.

“The US policy [ ] – which sees Washington prioritise unrestrained funding for a proxy war with a nuclear power in a foreign land while our own domestic infrastructure falls apart before our eyes – exposes a disturbing dynamic at the heart of the Ukraine conflict: an international Ponzi scheme that enables Western elites to seize hard-earned wealth out of the hands of average US citizens and funnel it into the coffers of a foreign government that even the Western-sponsored Transparency International ranks as one of the most corrupt in Europe.”

Zelensky is now straight up admitting to directly working with the CIA.

He just told CNN that there will be no victory in Ukraine until they retake Crimea, that he and the United States CIA withhold no secrets together, and there is no situation where there can be peace unless they retake Crimea!

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.
