Originally posted at >>>/qresearch/22629988 (220233ZFEB25) Notable: Papua New Guinea, Australia sign defence treaty to push military integration - The Papua New Guinea Defence Force and Australian Defence Force will push for increased integration and more joint exercises under a newly signed defence treaty. The agreement, which is the first defence treaty signed by Papua New Guinea with a foreign country, was announced during a meeting between Australian and PNG officials in Brisbane on February 20. The agreement is designed as a legal framework upgrade to an existing Status of Force Agreement signed in 1977 between the two countries. Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marles, speaking during a press conference in Brisbane, said Papua New Guinea is Australia’s nearest neighbour and both countries have an incredibly close defence relationship. "Consistent with the guidance that's been given to both of us by our respective Prime Ministers to enhance and build bilateral relationship between Australian Papua New Guinea, today, the Minister and I are announcing that our two countries are commencing negotiations to establish a defence treaty between Australia and PNG," he said. "This will be a treaty with ambition. It will be the most significant defence agreement between our two countries since Papua New Guinean independence. And to that end, it is very significant that we are negotiating this in the 50th year of Papua New Guinea's independence. This will help our two defence forces to work much more closely together. Already, Australia's biggest defence cooperation program is in Papua New Guinea. Already, there is extensive training which occurs amongst the Papua New Guinea Defence Force in Australia. But this will enable our two defence forces to walk down a pathway of increasing integration and increasing interoperability."

Originally posted at >>>/qresearch/22630016 (220243ZFEB25) Notable: Donald Trump’s call out to golfing great Adam Scott may herald good news for Australia - Golf legend Bobby Jones once said, “golf is the closest game to the game we call life” and Australia’s top diplomats could do well to heed his words while tee-ing off with the new US President. President Donald Trump gave top Australian golfer Adam Scott and his home country a surprise call out on Thursday while meeting with the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) top brass at the White House, including Tiger Woods and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “We have Adam Scott here also. Winner of the Masters. One of the greatest golfers in the world,” Mr Trump said. “I’ve always tried to swing just like Adam. It never worked out that way.” He added that he sees Scott as “sort of” American, reported Fox News. “Adam, even though he doesn’t quite come from our country, he sort of does, right? He’s here a lot,” he said. “He comes from another nice place like Australia, and they’ve been very, very good for us.” The unexpected praise will be welcome news in Canberra, where the Government is on tenterhooks about winning an exemption from punishing steel and aluminium tariffs due to kick into force at an inopportune pre-election moment in March. Australia has stressed Washington’s bilateral trade surplus and Canberra’s vital contribution to regional security in an effort to evade the levies. Mr Trump’s seemingly random compliment may suggest the message is sinking in. Coming on the back of golfing great Greg Norman’s recent bridge-building between Mr Trump and Australian ambassador Kevin Rudd, it could also offer diplomats and politicians a hint on how best to forge a connection with the US president. “If I can just give one little bit of information to help two people get together, then I’m so proud to be able to do that,” Mr Norman recently told a dinner event in Washington to honour Australians who had helped foster closer bilateral ties.

Mr Chalmers told the ABC's Insiders program that trade and tariffs were firmly on the agenda for the meeting, though he didn't expect to lock in a decision from the US during the visit. "This won't be the first time that I've met with Secretary Bessent, but the first time since he was confirmed in that new role," Mr Chalmers said. "Trade and tariffs will be part of the conversation, but not the whole conversation. That's an ongoing discussion that we are having with our American counterparts. "I don't expect to conclude those discussions on steel and aluminium while I'm in DC, but whether it's the flow of capital or critical minerals and trade, there's lots to talk about." Shortly after taking office, US President Donald Trump announced 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium imported into the US, both of which are due to take effect next month. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke to Mr Trump shortly after he announced the sweeping tariffs, in what the prime minister described as a "constructive and warm" conversation. Shortly after the call, Mr Trump said he would give "great consideration" to Australia's request for an exemption to the tariffs.

Originally posted at >>>/qresearch/22638566 (230844ZFEB25) Notable: China conducts second live fire drill in Tasman Sea - China has conducted the second live-firing exercise from a warship in two days in the waters between Australia and New Zealand. The most recent incident follows the Albanese government’s declaration that China had failed to answer for its lack of notice, after the first event caused commercial flights to divert their routes. A Defence spokesperson said that a Chinese warship had advised via radio of live firing activity on Saturday and the situation was being monitored. “Defence is working with Air Services Australia to minimise the impact of activities on commercial airlines and maritime vessels.” The Chinese navy is operating in international waters and is complying with international law. However, it is understood questions remain about the period of notice given before firing commenced, and notification to mariners or aviation authorities. New Zealand Defence Minister Judith Collins’ office said that one of her nation’s Navy frigates observed live rounds being fired, and that the Chinese warship had advised of the activity via radio. “The safety of all people, aircraft and vessels in the area remains our paramount concern,” Collins’ office said in the statement, Stuff reported. “Our concerns regarding notification times and best practise when undertaking military exercises stand, and will be communicated appropriately.” Speaking earlier on Saturday, Defence Minister Richard Marles said that, following the first incident on Friday, China must explain its failure to provide sufficient notice for the exercise, which has been branded a provocative act by defence experts.

Originally posted at >>>/qresearch/22638582 (230850ZFEB25) Notable: 'Strongly dissatisfied': China accuses Australia of 'hyping up' navy drills - Australian complaints over recent Chinese live-fire naval drills in international waters between Australia and New Zealand were "hyped up" and "inconsistent with the facts", China's defence ministry says. Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Saturday Beijing had failed to give satisfactory reasons for what he called inadequate notice for live-fire drills on Friday which he said had forced airlines to divert flights. China's defence ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Sunday China had issued repeated safety notices before the drills. He said China's actions complied with international law and did not affect aviation flight safety. "Australia, fully knowing this, made unreasonable accusations against China and deliberately hyped it up," Qian said in a post from the Chinese defence ministry. "We are deeply surprised and strongly dissatisfied." Analysts believed the sailing was an attempt by Beijing to project power and send a message to Canberra about China's capability. Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was asked on Saturday if he would call President Xi Jinping in light of the incident but instead defended China's right to carry out the exercise as it had not breached international law. "It's important to not suggest that wasn't the case," he said. The live-fire exercise follows a run-in with the Chinese military last week when a fighter jet fired flares in front of a Royal Australian Air Force surveillance aircraft during a patrol over the South China Sea. The Australian government lodged a complaint with Beijing over the near-miss.

South Korean court issues warrants to detain impeached President Yoon and search his office over declaring Martial Law

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) --- A South Korean court issued warrants Tuesday to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol and search his office and residence over allegations of rebellion in connection with his short-lived declaration of martial law.

It’s the first time for a warrant has been issued to detain a sitting South Korean president. But experts say there is little chance of detention or searches unless Yoon is formally removed from office.

The Seoul Western District Court issued warrants to detain Yoon and to search the presidential office and residence in central Seoul, according to a statement from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials, which is leading a joint investigation with police and military authorities.

The agency says it’s been investigating whether Yoon’s Dec. 3 declaration amounted to rebellion.

Under South Korean law, the leader of a rebellion can face the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted. Yoon has presidential immunity from most criminal prosecution, but the privilege does not extend to allegations of rebellion or treason.

Yoon’s powers have been suspended since the opposition-controlled National Assembly voted to impeach him on Dec. 14 over his imposition of martial law, during which hundreds of troops and police officers were deployed at the assembly. By law, a president in South Korea is allowed to declare martial law only during wartime or similar emergencies and has no right to suspend parliament’s operations even under martial law.

BT (WEB) Air Accident Investigation inspectors have been sent to Belfast City Airport to begin their investigation today after a plane crash-landed during bad weather yesterday.

The AAIB said their team are currently enroute to the airport, with the update coming as flights resume at the site.

An Aer Lingus Regional ATR aircraft skidded down the runway at around 4pm yesterday.

Four crew members were on board but no-one was seriously hurt.

GL (T.me) ⚔️Fatah's journey: One movement’s struggle for the liberation of Palestine through decades

January 1 marks the 65th anniversary of the creation of Fatah, the famous Palestinian liberation movement.

Despite Fatah being created sometime in the second half of the 1950s, the movement’s “birthday” is considered to be January 1, 1965 when it carried out its first combat operation on Israeli soil.

The movement’s name, Fatah, is the acronym in reverse for Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini, or “movement for the national liberation of Palestine”.

Established as a military-political organization of Palestinian Arabs, Fatah’s original goal was the expulsion of Jewish settlers from lands that Palestinians regard as their own.

After Israel’s occupation of vast swathes of Palestinian territories following the Six Day War in 1967, Fatah expanded its influence in the region.

Though originally regarded as a radical movement by many countries, Fatah managed to change its image in 1993 when its head Yasser Arafat signed the Oslo Accords with the Israeli leadership -- a deal meant to help achieve a peace treaty between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (a coalition to which Fatah belongs).

As a result of this agreement, Fatah gained international recognition and even became the head of the Palestinian National Authority.

Fatah, a nationalist movement, eventually found itself at odds with Hamas, another Palestinian group fighting for the expulsion of the Israelis from the Palestinian territories. Founded in 1987, Hamas is an Islamist organization with ties to Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

MUST WATCH: Woman tells Trudeau to 'get the f*ck out of BC'

https://www.westernstandard.news/watch/must-watch-woman-tells-trudeau-to-get-the-fck-out-of-bc/60787

She had some choice words for the prime minister after bumping into him during his vacation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau received a less-than-warm welcome from one local as he vacationed with his family at Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, BC.

The woman had some choice words after bumping into the him.

"Mr. prime minister," she calls out, causing Trudeau to turn around and approach her. After shaking hands, she adds, "Please get the f*ck out of BC. You suck."

Trudeau then turns around and walks away.

The Trudeau clan was rumoured to have been in BC, however this was the first confirmed sighting. The video has gone viral on X, with many sharing the original poster's sentiments.

Others, however, have questioned whether it is appropriate to accost a prime minister as he vacations with his family.

In 2025 Critical Political Choices Will Define Canada's Future: Clement

https://www.thebureau.news/p/in-2025-critical-political-choices

Many Canadian politicians have forged unhealthy relationships with China; Ottawa must renew its most important partnership with the United States, former senior Mountie Garry Clement writes

The China Challenge

Since the era of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, many Canadian politicians have forged what we now recognize as unhealthy relationships with China, enabling the country to interfere in our electoral process at all levels of government. This has provided an opportunity for Triads and Chinese Communist Party sympathizers to infiltrate Canadian society and Canadian politics.

In the past decade, Canada’s relationship with China has been strained, primarily due to geopolitical tensions and human rights concerns, but this has not resulted in any meaningful restrictions being placed on China by Canada. In 2025, this relationship will remain a balancing act---Canada must tread carefully between maintaining diplomatic and trade ties with a rising global power while aligning with Western allies who increasingly view China as a strategic adversary. Canadian politicians will also need to understand and accept that United Front Groups existing in Chinese diaspora communities across Canada have been shown to be allied with the Chinese government. Elon Musk Says “Hateful, Unrepentant Racists” Should Be Removed from the Republican Party “Root and Stem” as Debate Over H-1B Visas Intensifies

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2024/12/elon-musk-says-hateful-unrepentant-racists-maga-should/

In a recent escalation of the internal Republican Party debate over H-1B visas, tech magnate Elon Musk has called for the expulsion of “hateful, unrepentant racists” from the party.

This statement comes amid rising tensions between Silicon Valley leaders and certain factions of the MAGA movement regarding the employment of highly skilled foreign workers.

The controversy centers on the appointment of Sriram Krishnan, an Indian-American entrepreneur, as a senior policy advisor on artificial intelligence in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

Krishnan’s selection has drawn criticism from the MAGA movement, notably Laura Loomer, who accused Indian immigrants of “stealing jobs” and labeled them as “third-world invaders.”

Laura Loomer then claimed that she was suspended for 12 hours on X after a heated exchange with the platform’s billionaire owner, Elon Musk

Biden Is Wrong To Double Down on Syria

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2024/12/biden-is-wrong-double-down-syria/

On December 19, the U.S. Department of Defense announced that there are roughly 2,000 troops stationed in Syria -- 1,100 more than previously shared with the public. Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder disclosed the new number almost off-handedly, without explanation for the shock news as Syria experiences a generational moment following former President Bashar al-Assad’s regime collapse on December 8. The announcement personifies the ongoing and widespread disdain of American political and military leaders for transparency on military operations abroad. Continue...

DJT (TruSoc) The extension of the Debt Ceiling by a previous Speaker of the House, a good man and a friend of mine, from this past September of the Biden Administration, to June of the Trump Administration, will go down as one of the dumbest political decisions made in years. There was no reason to do it - NOTHING WAS GAINED, and we got nothing for it - A major reason why that Speakership was lost. It was Biden’s problem, not ours. Now it becomes ours. I call it “1929” because the Democrats don’t care what our Country may be forced into. In fact, they would prefer “Depression” as long as it hurt the Republican Party. The Democrats must be forced to take a vote on this treacherous issue NOW, during the Biden Administration, and not in June. They should be blamed for this potential disaster, not the Republicans!

DJT (TruSoc) President Jimmy Carter is dead at 100 years of age. While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for. He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, far more than most Presidents, after he left the Oval Office. Warmest condolences from Melania and I to his wonderful family!

Crashed Azerbaijani plane hit from ground -- president

The passenger jet had also been rendered inoperable by electronic warfare means, Ilham Aliyev has claimed

The passenger jet that crashed in Kazakhstan earlier this week had been struck from the ground near the Russian city of Grozny, Azeri President Ilham Aliyev has claimed.

An Embraer 190, operating as Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny, diverted to Kazakhstan and crashed on Wednesday, killing 38 of the 67 people on board.

In a Sunday interview with the state-run broadcaster AzTV, Aliyev claimed that the aircraft “was damaged from the outside on Russian territory, near the city of Grozny, and almost got out of control.”

“We are also aware that our aircraft was rendered uncontrollable by electronic warfare means... In addition, the tail section of the plane was severely damaged by fire from the ground,” he said.

Aliyev noted that the exact circumstances of the crash would become known after the data from flight recorders is accessed. However, he insisted that the preliminary versions of the incident “are well founded and based on facts.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Aliyev on Saturday to express his condolences over the deadly plane crash, the Kremlin said in a statement. He offered an apology to his Azeri counterpart for the fact that the incident, which he attributed to a Ukrainian UAV raid, “took place in Russian airspace.”

President-elect Donald Trump and his appointees are floating plans to bring the Justice Department under closer presidential control and fire career employees.

WASHINGTON---Justice Department lawyers who have angered President-elect Donald Trump and his allies are facing tough decisions about whether to stay in government—and how to best protect themselves from threats of retribution after Inauguration Day.

Dozens of prosecutors and agents have worked on cases that potentially make them vulnerable, such as special counsel investigations of Trump, prosecutions of hundreds of his supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and contempt-of-Congress cases that sent top Trump associatesSteve Bannon and Peter Navarro to prison this year.

Their concerns are part of a broader wave of uncertainty that has swept through the Justice Department since Trump’s re-election, as he and his appointees openly float plans to fire career employees and bring the department more closely under presidential control.

Some department lawyers on the fence about leaving have sought counsel from Attorney General Merrick Garland and other senior officials, who have encouraged them to stay on for continuity of government and for their expertise, people familiar with the discussions said.

“Career Justice Department lawyers must be fully committed to implementing President Trump’s policies or they should leave or be fired,” Mark Paoletta, who worked on Trump’s Justice Department transition team, said in a series of social-media posts after the election.

If confirmed, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, would lead the department after emerging as one of its leading critics since Trump was indicted.

“The Department of Justice, the prosecutors, will be prosecuted, the bad ones,” Bondi said on Fox News last year. “The investigators will be investigated.…We can clean house next term, and that’s what has to happen.”

Pam Bondi, center, Trump’s pick for attorney general, emerged as a leading critic of the Justice Department after he was indicted.

Kash Patel, the hard-line conservative provocateur Trump wants to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has made similar statements, pledging to hollow out the bureau’s ranks.

Exhaustive congressional inquiries could provide another avenue for Trump and his allies to exact a measure of payback. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have already told Smith’s team to retain all their records and communications.

2024 Trafficking in Persons Report: Hong Kong

The Government of Hong Kong does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts to do so. These efforts included increasing the number of screenings of vulnerable populations for trafficking indicators, arresting six alleged sex traffickers, and training officials from various agencies on anti-trafficking topics. However, the government did not demonstrate overall increasing efforts compared with the previous reporting period. It did not convict any sex traffickers and did not convict any labor traffickers for the fifth consecutive year. Victim identification efforts and services remained inadequate. Despite the government screening thousands of vulnerable persons for trafficking indicators, it identified only three victims, a decrease compared with identifying 32 victims during the previous reporting period. The government did not provide services to any victims. Foreign domestic workers remained at high risk of trafficking, and authorities did not take adequate measures to protect them and prevent trafficking; the government did not identify any victims among foreign domestic workers. A code of practice is in place; however, the government allowed employers and labor recruiters to charge recruitment fees to migrant workers, and did not adequately enforce limits on such fees, passport retention, and other practices that increase trafficking risks. Authorities likely penalized trafficking victims through arrest and deportation for immigration, narcotics, and commercial sex offenses committed as a direct result of being trafficked. The government did not fully criminalize all forms of trafficking and did not provide comprehensive data of successful trafficking investigations, prosecutions, or victim identification efforts independent of associated criminal investigations. Therefore Hong Kong was downgraded to Tier 2 Watch List.

Shona Robison boosts 'out of control' benefits spending by £800m in budget funded by highest taxes in the UK

John Swinney's first ever SNP budget as First Minister brought little joy to those who pay higher taxes than England as income tax was frozen, with £800m more being ploughed into benefits.

4 DEC 2024

Shona Robison has ignored experts who have warned about high taxes damaging the economy by refusing to introduce tax cuts for hard-working Scots. But the Finance Secretary confirmed that an extra £800m of public cash will go towards an "out of control" benefits bill.

Scotland has six of the 10 regions with the most people on out-of-work benefits but instead of combating this, more money will be ploughed into the Social Security System. Ms Robison also boasted that Scots will no longer wait more than a year for out-patient appointments by 2026.

Councils have also been given free reign to increase council tax for families across Scotland as a freeze was lifted. Some are considering rises of up to 17% from next April, although Ms Robison pleaded with local authorities not to do this and pointed to a increase in funding by more than £1 billion.

"And the reality is we are paying a heavy price for years of SNP waste, on ferries, gender reforms, failed independence bids, and a national care service that has already cost the nation £30m. The benefits bill is rising by a further £800m and is out of control because the government cannot get people back into work.

"NHS waiting lists are so long that sick people are staying sick. The budget confirms that the SNP has wrecked public services, John Swinney is out of ideas, and his government is running out of time."

Tracy Black, CBI Chief Strategy Officer and Devolved Nations Ambassador, said: “Following a tough UK Budget for business, firms looking to the Scottish Government to provide some festive cheer will be left feeling a little cold.

“With fiscal headroom in famously short supply, this was always likely to be a Scottish Budget focused on shoring up the public sector and helping households most in need. Any small hope for an injection of capital to catalyse enterprise was dashed, even as firms battle a range of costly challenges.

Jamie Livingstone, Head of Oxfam Scotland, said: “This budget undoubtedly delivers some much-needed progress, like ending the two-child limit, but ultimately the First Minister’s promises to eradicate child poverty and tackle climate change will remain built on sand without further new public spending funded by bold, long-term fair tax reform. The real test of the new Tax Strategy is whether it delivers a tax system that delivers fairness, not one that props up a financial house of cards.”

Joseph Rowntree Foundation Associate Director for Scotland Chris Birt said: “While this budget won't eradicate child poverty, the First Minister’s stated driving purpose, it does show positive signs of investing in the right things. Committing to the eliminating of the two child limit by investing in social security is a positive recognition that political choices can reduce poverty.

“Reversing the huge cuts to affordable house building is also welcome while we're in the jaws of a housing emergency. More than 50 children were raped or subjected to vile sex abuse by paedophile monks on UK holy island, damning report reveals

TOM BEDFORD and LIZ HULL

9 December 2024

More than 50 children who visited a remote holy island off the coast of Wales were raped or subjected to vile sex abuse by paedophile monks, a leaked report reveals.

Children as young as three were allegedly groomed and attacked in 'plain sight' on Caldey Island, a picturesque tourist spot off the Pembrokeshire coast.

For more than 100 years, the island has been home to Caldey Abbey and a small community of Trappist monks. It receives up to 60,000 visitors a year.

In April, an independent review was launched after several people came forward to report allegations of historic sex abuse, dating back more than 60 years.

The review found that monks, and men with criminal records who claimed to be monks, were able to join the monastery without checks.

They hid behind their 'chosen' religious names to carry out the horrific attacks, which took place while children were on summer holidays with their parents, often paid for by the Catholic church, or during visits with Catholic schools or youth groups, bePost too long. Mystery Drones Won't Interfere With Santa Claus' Work: US Air Force General

Dec 24, 2024 21:00 pm IST

Santa Claus has no need to worry about recent mystery drone sightings over New Jersey, a US Air Force general said Tuesday, as an annual tradition of "tracking" Saint Nick swung into action.

General Gregory Guillot's reassurances came as the joint US-Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command reported that Santa and his reindeer were making stops across Asia, including Japan and North Korea.

Santa's journey this year comes after weeks of mysterious sightings of alleged drones in New Jersey, sparking worldwide curiosity even as many of the reported sightings were debunked.

"Of course we are concerned about drones and anything else in the air," NORAD commander Guillot told Fox News. "But I don't foresee any difficulty at all with drones for Santa this year."

NORAD's Santa tracker dates to 1955, when a Colorado newspaper advertisement printed a phone number to connect children with Santa - but mistakenly directed them to the hotline for the joint military nerve center.

To avoid disappointing the little ones, NORAD's director of operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, ordered his staff to "check" the radar to see where Santa might be and update the children calling in on his location.

When not spreading holiday cheer, NORAD conducts aerospace and maritime control and warning operations - including monitoring for missile launches from North Korea, something perhaps on Santa's mind as he guided his reindeer-hauled sleigh over Pyongyang.

The tracker, which has been modernized and moved online to noradsanta.org, includes a 3D map showing Santa's movements in real time, as well as a ticker conPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

US biolab activity in Africa: Russia’s country-by-country analysis

The continent is the new focus of American biolab activities, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has claimed

24 Dec, 2024

The US is significantly expanding its military-biological presence in Africa, raising concerns about sovereignty and healthcare dependencies among participating nations, new analysis from the Russian military has claimed.

According to documents presented on Tuesday, the US is collaborating with local ministries, private contractors, and Big Pharma companies to implement American standards in biological safety and health management in Africa.

The documents indicate that the US military-biological presence on the African continent is rapidly expanding. Studies on the resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to medical drugs are reportedly being conducted in 18 African countries, while funding is provided through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Here is a breakdown of the countries mentioned in the report from the Russian military.

Ghana and Djibouti

Branches of the US Navy Medical Center are located in these countries, where work is being conducted to isolate and sequence pathogens in natural disease hotspots.

Nigeria

In 2024, a joint medical research center and a military medical laboratory were established in Nigeria, staffed by US Defense Department specialists. Additionally, the country is funded for HIV projects, where Nigerian citizens participate in clinical trials of drugs by the Pentagon-affiliated company Gilead.

NATO scrambles warplanes after brutal Putin terrorises Ukrainians with Christmas missile and drone attacks as Keir Starmer condemns 'bloody and brutal' strikes

Updated: 07:55 EST, 25 December 2024

NATO was forced to scramble warplanes on its eastern flank on Christmas Day as Vladimir Putin unleashed savage missile and kamikaze drone strikes on targets across Ukraine.

Russia's warplanes, missiles and drones attacked key civilian infrastructure, specifically power plants and supply networks, to leave long-suffering Ukrainians freezing over the festivities.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer condemned the strikes on Ukraine's energy grid, labelling the attacks 'bloody and brutal... with no respite even at Christmas'.

Moscow used its long-range strategic bombers, including nuclear-capable Tu-95 'Bear' aircraft, from Olenya airfield in the Arctic.

Reports said Russian missiles had overflown Moldova - a sovereign state - and crossed the territory of Romania, a NATO country, prompting the security bloc's fighter jets to take flight.

But other Muslim leaders have urged voters to avoid “cutting their nose to spite their face”, saying inadvertently electing the Liberals would be a far worse prospect for the community’s hopes for Palestine. The ALP will likely incorporate The Muslim Vote’s stance as part of its campaign arsenal in southwest Sydney, where supportive elements from the community fear a protest vote could usher in a Liberal government far friendlier to Israel and more opposed to Palestinian statehood. Industry Minister Ed Husic, the country’s most senior Muslim politician, urged his community to not vote in “anger” against Labor, spruiking the government’s “advocacy” for Palestinian sovereignty and its record at the United Nations. “I think people can see the volume of work that we have done as a government, particularly in the last 12 months … We are trying to make sure that Australia’s voice is heard in the international arena on this issue,” Mr Husic said on Monday. But The Muslim Vote convener Wesam Charkawi rejected Mr Husic’s plea, urging Muslim voters who had been “neglected … for far too long” to take a stand against Labor at the ballot box. “(The Labor government) consistently held that Israel has a right to defend itself while Palestinians were being butchered,” Sheik Charkawi said: “(The government) refused to sanction Israel, refused to expel the Israeli ambassador, refused to call for an arms embargo, and refused on multiple occasions to call for an unconditional ceasefire.”

The resolution, passed by the UN General Assembly, also calls for an end to all new settlement activities and for settlers to be removed from the occupied territory. Australia was one of 157 nations that voted in favour of the resolution. Seven abstained, and eight voted against it, including the USA and Israel. Australia has abstained from similar resolutions at past meetings of the General Assembly, including at a vote in September. Since then, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, which allege war crimes and crimes against humanity. Australia is a party to the ICC and has a legal obligation to arrest the men if they visit. Australia's ambassador to the United Nations, James Larsen, said Australia had now returned to a position it held up until the year 2001. He said that was a time "when the international community and the parties themselves came together to chart a path towards a two-state solution", and the vote "reflects our determination that the international community again work together to build momentum towards this goal".

Jewish groups were outraged at the government’s decision to support the UN motion, which Australia has abstained from or opposed for more than two decades, accusing it of breaching a pre-election pledge to maintain strong support for Israel and avoid using foreign policy to play domestic politics. Australia joined 156 other countries on Wednesday morning AEDT to back the seven-page resolution urging “the realisation of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, primarily the right to self-determination and the right to their independent state”. Mr Dutton said the Prime Minister had abandoned Australian Jews “for votes”. “He sold the Jewish community out in this country for Green votes in western Sydney and in places like Marrickville (in Mr Albanese’s seat),” the Opposition Leader said. “I think we should be standing with allies like the United States. Instead, the Albanese government is chasing Green votes and they’ve been prepared to sacrifice the wellbeing of the Jewish community here in Australia to do so.”

The Albanese government angered Israel and pleased Palestinian supporters on Wednesday by voting in favour of a United Nations resolution demanding Israel end its presence in the occupied Palestinian territories as soon as possible and calling for the evacuation of all settlers from the West Bank and Gaza. Australia had abstained or voted against similar motions since 2001, making the shift a significant departure from its previous position. Nasser Mashni, president of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, said establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel would be akin to partitioning South Africa as a way to end apartheid in the 1990s. “The two-state solution is absolutely dead,” Mashni, whose organisation is the peak lobby group for Palestinian rights, told this masthead. “The driving force behind the idea of a two-state solution in the West has been about protecting Israel as a Jewish democratic state. But at some point the world will see that there are no two states, that Israel itself doesn’t want it. What we’re left with is one land, two peoples and two laws, and that’s apartheid.” He continued: “It was wrong in South Africa, and it is wrong in Palestine. We need to dismantle an apartheid regime and no one suggested the solution for apartheid in South Africa was separate black and white states.”
