According to a report published on December 28, 2024, by Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence, the Magura V5, operated by the elite Group 13 special unit, has successfully destroyed or damaged 15 Russian naval vessels.

This landmark achievement marks a significant turning point in naval warfare, demonstrating the transformative potential of unmanned systems in reshaping military dynamics.

Far from addressing labor shortages or fostering innovation, the H-1B visa program has become a tool for corporations to exploit cheap foreign labor, drive down wages, and displace American workers. Tesla’s own skyrocketing use of the program exemplifies these abuses, making it clear the program must end.

Wage Suppression.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) routinely certifies H-1B positions at wage levels far below the local median, effectively undercutting American workers. Sixty percent of all H-1B positions in FY 2024 were certified at wage levels that fell short of local standards. The law grants the DOL the authority to mandate fairer wages, but it has failed to act, allowing systemic exploitation to persist.

This deliberate inaction enables employers to pay H-1B workers as little as the 17th percentile of local wages. While advertised as a program to attract the best global talent, H-1B is structured to maximize corporate profits at the expense of both the American, and migrant workers.

Tesla: A Case Study in H-1B Dependence.

Under Elon Musk’s leadership, Tesla has rapidly climbed the ranks of H-1B employers. In FY 2024, Tesla had 742 H-1B petitions approved for new employment, a dramatic increase from 328 in FY 2023. The company also had 1,025 H-1B petitions approved for continuing employment, reflecting its growing reliance on foreign labor.Tesla’s Labor Condition Applications (LCAs) reveal the breadth of its dependence on H-1B workers. In FY 2024, Tesla filed requests for roles including:

Israel’s spy network infiltrated Hezbollah for decades, leading to Hassan Nasrallah's assassination and the world-renowned explosive pager operation.

Israel's assassination of Hezbollah's former leader, Hassan Nasrallah, was the culmination of extensive spy infiltration and intelligence gathering from the terror group that spanned decades, the New York Times reported on Sunday.

The NYT investigation, based on interviews with more than two dozen current and former Israeli, American, and European officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss classified operations, revealed just how extensively Israeli spies had penetrated Hezbollah as part of two decades of methodical intelligence work in preparation for an all-out war that many expected would eventually come.

The Israeli spies recruited people to plant listening devices in Hezbollah bunkers, tracked meetings between one top commander and his four mistresses, and had near-constant visibility into the movements of the terror group's leaders, per NYT's report.

NYT acknowledged there were major breakthroughs, such as in 2012 when Israel's Unit 8200 stole a trove of information, including the specifics of the leaders' secret hide-outs and the group's arsenal of missiles and rockets. NYT also highlighted significant stumbles, such as in late 2023, when a Hezbollah technician got suspicious about the batteries in the pagers, which were later detonated by Israel, crippling thousands of Hezbollah terrorists.

NYT noted that Unit 8200 scrambled to save their efforts in September when they collected intelligence that Hezbollah terrorists were concerned enough about the pagers that they were sending some of them to Iran for inspection.

This led top intelligence officials to persuade Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to give the order to detonate the pagers, setting in motion the campaign that culminated in the assassination of Nasrallah due to concerns that the operation would be exposed, the report claimed.

Israel's great success

The report further stated that the campaign against Hezbollah defanged one of Israel's greatest adversaries and dealt a blow to Iran's regional strategy of arming and funding groups bent on Israel's destruction, with the weakening of the Iran-led Axis reshaping Middle East dynamics, contributing to the fall of Assad in Syria.

Right up until he was assassinated, Hassan Nasrallah did not believe that Israel would kill him, the report claimed. His aides reportedly urged him to leave his underground fortress to a safer location, which Nasrallah brushed off, given his perception that Israel had no interest in a full-scale war. However, he did not realize that Israeli spy agencies had been tracking his every movement for years, according to NYT.

“Hezbollah can’t continue to get support and funding from Iran without being in a war against Israel. That’s the raison d’être for Hezbollah,” said Brig. Gen. Shimon Shapira, a former military secretary for Mr. Netanyahu and the author of “Hezbollah: Between Iran and Lebanon. "They will rearm and rebuild,” he said. “It’s only a matter of time.”

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 2 stated Kevin Johnson, 52 of Madisonville, Kentucky, walked away from work detail at the Convention Center in Hopkinsville.

KSP received the report about the escaped inmate at 3:29 p.m. on December 28, from the Christian County Detention Center.

Johnson is said to be a white male, 6'2" tall, weighing 250 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was described as wearing khaki pants and a black shirt.

Members of the violent Venezuelan prison gang, Tren de Aragua (TdA), continue to expand criminal operations nationwide, including in the midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

In Illinois, Chicago has long been plagued with illegal border crosser crime, serving as a major hub for drug trafficking operations run by the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel and transnational criminal organizations working with street gangs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency has reported.

As the border crisis escalated over the past few years, a record number of Venezuelan illegal border crossers, more than one million, were reported under the Biden administration. As hundreds of thousands were released into the U.S., including TdA members, violence spread nationwide, including in the so-called sanctuary city of Chicago.

Tren de Aragua gang members are known for violence, murder, kidnapping, extortion, bribery and human and drug trafficking and are linked to more than 100 law enforcement investigations nationwide.

An investigation by America First Legal found that Chicago law enforcement learned that TdA members were perpetrating human trafficking, sex exploitation, drug trafficking, and retail theft rings, also using extreme brutality – including dismemberment – to threaten their rivals.

TdA members have embedded themselves in South American migrant communities, with Chicago Police Department records revealing at least 30 arrests were of confirmed TdA members between Jan. 1, 2023, and Sept. 10, 2024, according to records obtained by AFL through Freedom of Information requests.

In October, AFL released its first report on TdA crime impacting Cook County, publishing records from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. In November, it published data and documents from the Chicago Police Department and Illinois Governor’s Office related to TdA crime and city policies.

According to police arrest records obtained by CWB Chicago News, arrests of Venezuelan nationals in Chicago exploded by more than 2,500% under the Biden administration between 2021 and 2023. Chicago Police Department officers arrested six Venezuelan nationals in 2021, 26 in 2022 and 686 in 2023, according to the data. Venezuelan arrests in 2023 were up 11,333% from 2021 and up 2,538% from 2022, the outlet reported.

TdA crime doesn’t just stay in Chicago but has been found to be linked to multiple cities. Last month, an alleged TdA member operating in Chicago was arrested in Chattanooga, Tenn. in a sex trafficking crackdown, NBC 5 News Chicago reported.

This is after he illegally entered the U.S. in Eagle Pass, Texas, in July 2022, was processed for removal and released into the country instead of being detained, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. By February 2024, he was arrested by Cicero, Ill., police officers on multiple charges including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and subsequently released. In March, ICE arrested and detained him, nearly two years after ICE first released him into the country.

In Indiana, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives busted a sex trafficking ring connected to TdA members allegedly engaged in forced prostitution with ties to a sex trafficking ring in Boston, Mass., authorities said, WTHR News reported.

In Wisconsin, a confirmed TdA member was arrested in Crawford County late last year on six charges including strangulation, false imprisonment, sexual assault and child abuse, WXOW News 19 reported.

Some reports by think tanks and on social media appear to confuse TdA with South American theft groups (SATG) operating in the Midwest. The SATG are primarily run by Columbian and Chilean nationals who either illegally entered the U.S. or exploited a visa program, The Center Square reported. Those targeting NFL and NBA players in Michigan and Minnesota have been confirmed to be part of the SATG, The Center Square reported.

Although TdA has established a stronghold in Colombia, Chile and Peru, authorities have yet to confirm TdA affiliation when making SATG announcements. Many of these cases are ongoing and SATG culprits remain at large.

A rather hilarious update to this story. The owners of the Fontainebleau are Jewish.

Rabbi Shmuley apparently didn’t know this and went on social media to smear the Jewish owners as “antisemitic nazi collaborators”.

And now they are suing him for defamation.

Brazilian authorities have halted construction of a BYD electric vehicle (EV) factory in Brazil’s Bahia state after rescuing 163 Chinese workers from what they described as “slavery-like conditions.” The workers were employed by Jinjiang Construction Brazil Ltd., a subcontractor hired to build the plant for the Chinese EV manufacturer.

The Labor Prosecutor’s Office reported that workers were subjected to dire living conditions, had their passports confiscated and 60% of their wages withheld. Following the report, BYD terminated its relationship with Jinjiang Construction and vowed to safeguard subcontracted workers’ rights.

On Friday, Brazilian authorities suspended the issuance of temporary work visas for BYD. In their report, the Labor Prosecutor’s Office said that workers were being brought to Brazil irregularly and were victims of human trafficking.

A pattern of exploitation

The investigation uncovered numerous labor abuses, including overcrowded accommodations with inadequate facilities. One dormitory reportedly had only one bathroom for 31 workers, forcing them to wake up at 4 a.m. daily to prepare for a 5:30 a.m. departure to the worksite.

ATLANTA (Dec. 29, 2024) — Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States and winner of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 29, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He was 100, the longest-lived president in U.S. history.

President Carter is survived by his children — Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rosalynn, and one grandchild.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The government in Damascus has changed, but Israel's relentless aerial assaults on Syria have not. A Sunday Israeli strike targeted an old army weapons depot northeast of the capital.

"An Israeli airstrike in the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday killed 11 people, according to a war monitor, as Israel continues to target Syrian weapons and military infrastructure even after the ouster of former President Bashar Assad," reports The Associated Press.

The depot which was struck has been described as belonging to "Assad's forces" in the industrial town of Adra. But Israel has been known to launch massive strikes in heavily populated areas, resulting typically in significant civilian casualties.

In the days and weeks after the December 8 takeover of the country by anti-Assad jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Israel has conducted hundreds of attacks seeking to degrade and destroy the national stockpile of weapons and advanced anti-air defenses.

Syria under the Assad government was known as having the most advanced air defense missile system in the region, having long been supplied by Russia.

Israel has used the opportunity of Assad's ouster to permanently decimate Syria's sophisticated weapons systems, including large-scale bombings of chemical weapons research centers, the main locations which are on the outskirts of Damascus.

This is also to prevent the return of Iranian forces to the country, and perhaps to ensure that whatever government rules Syria years from now can have no access to 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'.

At this point, Israeli tanks are a mere 20 miles from Damascus, and the Israeli military has seized Syrian land which extends out from the Golan Heights.

Washington DC’s District Department of Transportation denounced a transit ad that was spotted near the Capitol that likened MAGA hat wearers to garbage.

Biden reportedly regrets withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race and believes he could have defeated Trump.

Also according to WaPo, Biden regrets appointing Merrick Garland as Attorney General because he allowed the DOJ to prosecute Hunter Biden and didn’t work hard enough to derail Trump.

In November 2022, Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Trump three days after the former president announced his 2024 bid for the White House.

In June 2023, Jack Smith indicted Trump on 37 federal counts in Miami for lawfully storing presidential records at his Mar-a-Lago estate which was protected by Secret Service agents.

In September 2023 Trump was hit with 4 counts in Jack Smith’s January 6 case up in DC: Conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.

Both cases fell apart after the Supreme Court ruled that US Presidents have immunity from prosecution for ‘official acts.’

Biden is angry that Merrick Garland waited too long to prosecute Trump.

Russia won’t make concessions on Ukraine in NATO – Lavrov

The conflict must be settled through legally binding agreements that eliminate its root causes, the foreign minister has said

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said Russia will not agree to a mere postponement of Kiev’s NATO membership, or to the deployment of European peacekeepers to Ukraine – two ideas reportedly proposed by advisers of US President-elect Donald Trump, as part of a potential peace deal.

In an interview with TASS news agency published on Monday,Lavrov said Russia has not received any signals from Trump’s team regarding talks to resolve the Ukraine conflict.

“We have always been and remain ready for negotiations. But it is important to understand with whom and about what to conduct them,” he stressed.

Lavrov said thatif discussions with the next US administration take place, Moscow will not accept the proposals reported in the media, coming from members of Trump’s team.

During his campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to find a swift diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis if elected, but did not provide specifics on how he would achieve the goal.

The Wall Street Journal reported in November that Trump’s advisers had drafted a plan to resolve the conflict. The proposal includes delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership for two decades, a freeze along the current front line, and establishing a demilitarized zone controlled by peacekeepers from Ukraine’s European allies.

Lavrov said peace between Moscow and Kiev can only be achieved through “reliable, legally binding agreements” that address the root causes of the conflict and include mechanisms to prevent future violations.

The foreign minister noted that Russia’s position on settling the hostilities is “well known” and has been articulated by President Vladimir Putin on numerous occasions, including during his end-of-year press conference earlier this month.

At that event, Putin reiterated that Moscow remains open to negotiations with Kiev without any preconditions, aside from those already agreed upon in Istanbul in 2022.

These terms involve a neutral, non-aligned status for Ukraine – preventing it from joining NATO – as well as restrictions on deploying foreign weaponry in the country. Putin also stressed that any talks must take into account the realities on the ground that have emerged since 2022. This includes the status of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, which became part of Russia following referendums held in the fall of that year.

WASHINGTON—Justice Department lawyers who have angered President-elect Donald Trump and his allies are facing tough decisions about whether to stay in government—and how to best protect themselves from threats of retribution after Inauguration Day.

Dozens of prosecutors and agents have worked on cases that potentially make them vulnerable, such as special counsel investigations of Trump, prosecutions of hundreds of his supporters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and contempt-of-Congress cases that sent top Trump associatesSteve Bannon and Peter Navarro to prison this year.

Their concerns are part of a broader wave of uncertainty that has swept through the Justice Department since Trump’s re-election, as he and his appointees openly float plans to fire career employees and bring the department more closely under presidential control.

Some department lawyers on the fence about leaving have sought counsel from Attorney General Merrick Garland and other senior officials, who have encouraged them to stay on for continuity of government and for their expertise, people familiar with the discussions said.

Law firms say they have seen an unprecedented flood of résumés from department lawyers looking for the exits. While presidential transitions always upend the ranks of political appointees, “now, it’s seeping into a lot of career people,” said Steve Nelson, a legal recruiter who helps lawyers make the jump from government into the private sector.

“The number of people leaving, or looking at opportunities outside the Justice Department or elsewhere in the government, is way higher than it’s ever been before,” Nelson said.

Some Justice Department officials who might not have gone into private practice are now considering jobs at big firms as the best way to personally protect themselves.

One problem: There aren’t enough Big Law landing spots for all the attorneys eager for private practice. Some who sent out résumés have since decided to stay, unwilling or unable to give up their dream government jobs right away, department employees said.

Others have sought legal guidance from friends and private lawyers in preparation for the ways the next Trump administration and its supporters could make their lives difficult whether or not they leave the government, from potential harassment to investigations that could hurt them legally and financially for years.

At the center of the storm is special counsel Jack Smith and his team, some of whom are expected to leave, people close to them said, rather than return to department positions they held before being detailed to investigate and prosecute Trump for election interference and mishandling classified documents. Smith last month dropped both cases, citing longstanding Justice Department policy of not prosecuting a sitting president.

Smith still has to submit a report of the investigations to Garland, who has promised to make it public. That could further increase tensions with the incoming administration, but the report is likely to add little beyond the information that has already been made public, people familiar with it said.

A spokesman for Smith declined to comment. A Trump transition spokesman didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Trump’s surrogates and nominees have voiced a series of warnings.

“Career Justice Department lawyers must be fully committed to implementing President Trump’s policies or they should leave or be fired,” Mark Paoletta, who worked on Trump’s Justice Department transition team, said in a series of social-media posts after the election.

If confirmed, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, would lead the department after emerging as one of its leading critics since Trump was indicted.

“The Department of Justice, the prosecutors, will be prosecuted, the bad ones,” Bondi said on Fox News last year. “The investigators will be investigated.…We can clean house next term, and that’s what has to happen.”

Kash Patel, the hard-line conservative provocateur Trump wants to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has made similar statements, pledging to hollow out the bureau’s ranks.

Exhaustive congressional inquiries could provide another avenue for Trump and his allies to exact a measure of payback. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have already told Smith’s team to retain all their records and communications.

Since Trump’s election, a loose network of sympathetic lawyers has formed in preparation for defending Smith’s team and other officials who may face scrutiny from the Trump administration. Attorneys started calling friends and colleagues in the weeks after Trump was re-elected to see who would be willing to volunteer, people familiar with the effort said.

Civil service rules offer career employees some protection against being outright fired, and some lawyers see the chances of them being dismissed—or even prosecuted—as remote.

“We can’t fall down before we get hit. We can’t be hysterical,” said William Taylor, a defense lawyer familiar with efforts to recruit attorneys for government officials. “They’re going to make life unpleasant for some people, but actual consequences to people are really unlikely.”

Charles Dolan, HBO Founder and Pioneering Cable TV Mogul, Dies at 98

Charles Dolan, the astute businessman who created HBO in the early 1970s before transforming a small cable TV business on Long Island into a multibillion-dollar entertainment, sports and telecom empire, has died. He was 98.

Dolan’s family told Newsday, the newspaper that they own, that he died of natural causes, surrounded by loved ones. “Remembered as both a trailblazer in the television industry and a devoted family man, his legacy will live on,” they said Saturday.

The Cleveland-born mogul got his start in the cable business in Manhattan, where his Sterling Manhattan Cable company was awarded rights by New York City in 1965 to wire the lower part of the borough for cable TV service. It was a way to bring reception to places like high rises, where antenna reception was difficult.

It was while building out Manhattan’s fledgling cable business that Dolan came up with the idea to offer exclusive programming through cable TV to try to drum up subscribers. His idea, which he detailed in a memo while vacationing in France in 1971, was to give subscribers access to exclusive movies and sporting events. He subsequently cut a deal with Madison Square Garden to air exclusive New York Knicks and New York Rangers games.

“You couldn’t buy the movies and the games unless you also bought the reception,” he recalled in an interview with the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School in 2013. “We wanted to provide a complete television service.”

His initial idea, which he dubbed The Green Channel, was intriguing to executives at Time Inc., the majority investor in Dolan’s Manhattan cable operation.

The Green Channel was renamed HBO before launch, and Dolan and other executives like Gerald Levin sought out exclusive sporting events and films for it.

“There was a discussion, and the first idea was, ‘Well, let’s call it The Home Box [a slang term for the box that delivered broadcast signals to cable homes],’” Dolan recalled. “Then somebody said, ‘Well, if it’s Home Box and we’re selling movies, why don’t we make it the Home Box Office.’ That’s what it became, and it didn’t take long for that to convert to HBO. Everybody liked that name, and that was the beginning of it.”

Dolan’s Manhattan cable business, however, struggled. According to Felix Gillette and John Koblin’s 2022 book, It’s Not TV, HBO mustered a scant 10,000 subscribers in its first year, a number Levin called “very demoralizing.” Time ultimately bought out Dolan’s stake in HBO in 1974.

But it was after that sale that Dolan made his fortune, bringing cable services to New York suburbs via his Cablevision Systems Corp. Based on Long Island, Cablevision offered service in most of the city’s fast-growing suburbs to the east, north and west before expanding into such other markets as Boston, Cleveland and Chicago.

At Cablevision, Dolan and his family tried to replicate their success with HBO, launching a movie-focused channel in 1984 called American Movie Classics. AMC and its sibling channels operated under the Cablevision-owned Rainbow Media banner, which it subsequently spun off and now operates as AMC Networks Inc.

In 1994, Cablevision acquired a 50 percent stake in Madison Square Garden, which included the namesake arena as well as the NBA’s Knicks and NHL’s Rangers, from Viacom for a reported $1.1 billion, and it acquired the other 50 percent three years later for $650 million.

Dolan and Cablevision launched, bought and sold a variety of businesses over the years, including SportsChannel, the first regional sports network in the U.S., as well as the New York-based theater chain Clearview cinemas. Cablevision also acquired the electronics retailer The Wiz in 1998 and at Dolan’s urging purchased Long Island-based Newsday in 2008 in another $650 million deal.

In 2015, Charles and the Dolan family agreed to sell Cablevision to Patrick Drahi’s European telecom giant Altice for $17.7 billion. AMC Networks and Madison Square Garden continue to be owned by the Dolan family, with Charles’ son James Dolan running those businesses.

“The impact he made on the media, sports, and entertainment industries, including as the founder of Cablevision and HBO, is immeasurable,” said a statement on behalf of MSG Entertainment, MSG Sports, and Sphere. “His life was a testament to the importance of innovation, generosity, and hard work, and his legacy will live on in the industries he pioneered, the communities he served, and the memories of those who love him. Our thoughts are with the entire Dolan family and the countless people Mr. Dolan influenced throughout his remarkable life. We do not expect this to directly or indirectly change ownership by the Dolan family.”

Charles Francis Dolan was born in Cleveland on Oct. 16, 1926. His father, David, was an inventor; Gillette and Koblin noted that he came up with an early prototype of the automatic transmission for automobiles.

“When I learned how to drive,” Dolan said, “it was in a car that didn’t have a clutch. I’d pull into a gas station and the attendants would just be amazed.”

While attending Cleveland Heights High School, he got $2 to write a weekly column for the Cleveland Press about Boy Scout activities, and that led to him appearing on a radio program. He then served with the U.S. Air Force and studied at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, before dropping out to pursue an interest in telecommunications.

With his wife, Helen, whom he married in 1951, he launched a sports-reel business, sending prints of a “Game of the Week” to TV stations around the country in a syndication deal.

He moved to New York to produce for the syndication company Telenews, then joined Sterling Television, which he eventually bought with a partner. Sterling helped its clients reach their target audiences with films, usually by showing them at conventions held in New York.

One early deal he did with Sterling was buying cable rights to Knicks and Rangers playoff games in 1968 for $24,000.

“All the home games were blacked out,” he said. “The broadcast stations didn’t carry them because the Garden was worried about jeopardizing box office receipts. But our circulation was so modest in Manhattan that they were willing to make a deal.”

While his fortune was made by providing TV and internet services, his time launching HBO continued to stick with him. When asked by the University of Penn interviewers if if he had ever thought about its sale to Time, he replied, “Every day … I’ve never really felt that much apart from HBO.”

“Charles Dolan was a visionary creative, an extraordinary business leader and a great friend whose creation of HBO forever changed the quality and prestige of storytelling on television,” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said in a statement. “His impact continues to be felt today at HBO, Warner Bros. Discovery and across our entire industry. He will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to the entire Dolan family.”

Dolan is survived by six children, including James Dolan (and his wife, AMC Networks CEO Kristin Dolan) and Patrick Dolan, who runs Newsday. His brother, Larry Dolan, is the principal owner of baseball’s Cleveland Guardians. His wife died in August 2023 at 96.

Rolex, other watches stolen from Keanu Reeves’ Los Angeles home turn up in Chile

Keanu Reeves’ stolen Rolex has been found — in Chile.

The $9,000 Rolex Submariner, engraved with Reeves’ name, turned up in a police raid on four houses in Santiago. The timepiece is believed to have been stolen from Reeves’ Hollywood Hills home in December 2023. Two other watches belonging to Reeves, described by police as valuable, were also found in a sweep linked to a series of local robberies, according to CNN.

A 21-year-old man was arrested.

Reeves, perhaps most famous for his starring role in the “John Wick” movie series, had engraved the Rolex watch with his first name and the words “2021, JW4, thank you, The John Wick Five.”

The first “John Wick” begins with Reeves’ former hit man character seeking revenge after his house is broken into and robbed, and his dog killed.

According to CNN, Reeves reportedly gifted Rolex Submariners to the stuntmen he worked with on “John Wick: Chapter 4.”

Reeves’ house is no stranger to break-ins. Last December, police were called to the property on Thrasher Avenue after a reported burglary. The Los Angeles Police Department reported that burglars “entered the property through the backyard and broke a window to gain access.” Reeves was not home at the time.

Reeves’ home was the scene of back-to-back break-ins in 2014. In one case, Reeves confronted an intruder in his library, while cleaners found the other days later in his pool.

Early last year, Reeves filed for a temporary restraining order against a man who allegedly trespassed on the actor’s property at least six times between November 2022 and January 2023. In one case, the alleged stalker left behind a backpack containing a DNA testing kit, which he had intended to use on Reeves to show they were somehow related, according to the application for the order.

Spy equipment found on Russian “shadow fleet” tanker detained in Finland after undersea cable damage

Spy equipment used for monitoring NATO naval and aircraft activities was reportedly discovered on the tanker Eagle S, according to a report by the British shipping journal Lloyd's List, citing a source with direct involvement with the vessel. The ship, suspected of having ties to Russia, was recently detained by Finnish authorities.

According to the source, the sophisticated equipment aboard the Eagle S was abnormal for a commercial vessel, as it consumed significant amounts of power from the ship’s generator, causing frequent power outages.

Similar equipment was reportedly found on another tanker, the Honduras-flagged Swiftsea Rider, which is owned by the same group as the Cook Islands-flagged Eagle S. The Swiftsea Rider is under UK sanctions.

According to Lloyd's List, both ships are part of Russia's “shadow fleet” — a network of tankers tied to Russia through opaque ownership structures and engaged in activities that violate Western sanctions.

A non-crew member was also reportedly present on the ship during its voyage.

Finnish Coast Guard officials boarded the Eagle S as part of an investigation into potential sabotage related to the Dec. 25 damage to the Estlink 2 energy cable. The cable, which lies on the Baltic Sea floor, connects Finland and Estonia. Finnish police allege that the tanker slowed down and dragged its anchor around the cable, causing the damage. The following day, three additional undersea cables linking Finland and Estonia were also reported damaged.

An anonymous source shared over 60 confidential documents about the Eagle S with Lloyd’s List in June, including a vetting report detailing numerous safety violations identified during an inspection conducted while the tanker was anchored in Danish waters that same month.

"When we returned from an event to the hotel, there was a rope line, and Jonathan Li was in the lobby of the hotel where I was going to meet him for coffee," Hunter Biden said at the time. "In that line, I introduced my dad to Jonathan Li and a friend of his, and they shook hands and I believe probably took a photograph. And then my father went up to his room, and I went to have coffee with Jonathan Li."

Hunter Biden added that he didn't tell his father "anything" about who Li was.

Joe Biden has repeatedly denied any role in his son's businesses.

Flags will fly at half staff during Trump inauguration

Flags across the country will be lowered to half-staff until late next month to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100.

According to U.S. flag code, flags must be lowered for 30 days following the death of a sitting or former president.

That timeline overlaps the Jan. 20 inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump and adds another layer of history to his presidential legacy.

When Trump takes the oath of office, he’ll be the first to do so while U.S. flags are lowered.

The closest it ever happened was in 1973, when then-President Richard Nixon ordered flags lowered to honor former President Lyndon B. Johnson who died just days after Nixon’s second swearing-in.

How long will flags be at half-staff?

The 30-day mourning period for a deceased president is a federal mandate outlined in the U.S. flag code.

For former President Jimmy Carter, this means flags will remain at half-staff until at least Jan. 28, covering both the presidential inauguration and the first week of Trump’s second term.

Can Trump order flags raised?

U.S. flag code requires flags stay at half-staff for at least 30 days for the death of a current or former president.

But, it’s not federal law, so as incoming president, Donald Trump could order flags raised back to full-staff.

Richard Nixon ordered flags raised back to full-staff on Feb. 13, 1973, during the 30-day mourning for former President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Nixon’s order was to honor the first American prisoners of war released from Vietnam. Flags were returned to half-staff the next day and stayed there for another eight days.

Are state flags at half-mast?

State flags are lowered along with federal orders.

U.S. flag code says no other flag should fly higher than the American flag on the same pole and can’t be any higher than the U.S. flag if flown on a separate pole.

So, that means state flags will be at half-staff at least until Jan. 28. (Half-mast and half-staff are essentially the same thing, though the former refers to the display of a flag on a ship or boat.)

Do I have to lower my flag?

If you’re flying the U.S. flag, it should be lowered to half-staff during the mourning period for former President Jimmy Carter, in accordance with the U.S. flag code.

The code is a set of guidelines, not law, but private citizens and business are expected to follow the protocol of lowering to half-staff any U.S. flag displayed on a vertical pole.

If you have an American flag on a 45-degree post, like the kind you mount to the side of your home, you can’t actually lower it to half-staff. But, you could add a black ribbon to the top of the pole or, if your post has one, lower the flag to the 90-degree position.

Barclays fires over a dozen bankers, traders before Christmas — without giving them bonuses

More than a dozen New York-based Barclays bankers and traders were fired just before the holidays — and they received coal in their stocking by being denied bonuses, The Post has learned.

The scrooges at Barclays, the UK-based lending giant, canned 15 Wall Street workers out of the roughly 50 it pink-slipped last month, two sources with close knowledge of the situation said.

None were given a bonus, the sources added, depriving them of a windfall since the majority of their compensation comes from the year-end bump.

For example, an investment banker might make a $200,000 salary and an expected $1 million bonus, one of the sources said.

One employment lawyer told The Post that while it is not unheard of for banks to fire workers late in the year, the fact that they were not giving a bonus is pretty heartless.

“A good employer will pay the bonus pro-rata for the amount of time worked during the year, but some don’t,” said Tanvir Rahman, an attorney for law firm Filippatos.

Rival Wall Street firms, including Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, award bonuses — perhaps half — when firing bankers and traders toward the end of the year, one of the sources said.

A spokesperson for Barclays stood by its decision.

“We regularly review our talent pool to ensure that we are investing in talent, delivering for clients and best positioned for long-term success as we execute against our strategy,” the rep told The Post.

Some of the fired bankers are considering filing $10 million-plus lawsuits, a source said.

They will likely contend that the bonus is earned throughout the year and is not discretionary, sources said.

Rahman said they may have a tough time winning their cases, though they often end up in arbitration with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

“The banks often in their labor agreements say you have to be employed at the time of the bonus to get your bonus,” Rahman said.

Barclays, which has more than 13,000 workers in the US, didn’t pay bonuses to dozens of bankers last year as revenue declined and cut bonuses by 43% across the bank in 2023, according to Financial News.

The lender was expected to increase bonuses by as much as 20% to some departments this year as dealmaking rebounded, the outlet added.

Earlier this year, Barclays announced a three-year plan to become a simpler and more efficient bank, in which it doesn’t rely on a large percentage of its revenue from investment banking.

A Russian Orthodox Church archpriest has compared the competitions to Sodom and Gomorrah

An archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church has criticized parents who enter their kids in child beauty pageants, describing such events as a “pedophile’s holiday.”

In a video published on social media on Sunday, Andrey Tkachevcomparedcompetitions in which small girls are evaluated ontheir physical appearance to Sodom and Gomorrah, the biblical cities that were destroyed by God for their wickedness.

"To be frank, child beauty pageants are a pedophile’s holiday.A five-year-old… wiggles like a grown woman, and the jury consisting of 60-year-old fat mugs drool on her,” he said.

The cleric recalled that he had seen girls participating in such an event when he visited a television studio to take part in a different program. “They were all dressed like ballerinas and had makeup like grown-up women, with bright lips,” he said.

"Little girls are being dressed like prostitutes… It is their own mothers who dressed them like little prostitutes. They put makeup on them. They made them learn stupid poems and songs. Now, they will compete on stage, with old men looking at them. And the mothers will sit in the audience and applaud their daughters,” the archpriest added.

These parents have “completely backward thinking, they are total idiots, they do not understand anything,” he claimed.

Despite concerns over their psychological and emotional effect on kids, child beauty pageants continue to be organized in Russia, with events like Mini Miss and Mister Russia attracting hundreds of participants from across the country.Some contests have also been held in an online formatin recent years, making them even more accessible.

In 2014, a draft law banning child beauty pageants was introduced in the Russian parliament, but did not pass. Back then, controversial MP Vitaly Milonov saidsuch competitions “crush a child’s psyche,” arguing that children should not be compared by their appearance “like dogs.”

Local authorities in several Russian regions, including the Republic of Tatarstan and Krasnodar Region, have banned beauty pageants for kids from being held on their territory.

Irish officials were left red-faced after it emerged a priceless piece of moon rock donated by the US and Nasa had lain in a government basement for more than three years before it was later destroyed in an accidental fire at the Dunsink Observatory.

Confidential government documents revealed the plight of the moon rock was highlighted to embarrassed Irish officials only when Washington offered to donate a second piece of lunar rock to Ireland in 1973 following another successful Apollo mission – and government officials were urgently trying to clarify what had happened to the first piece of moon rock.

In documents dating from April 27, 1984, it emerged the first piece of moon rock was given by US ambassador J G Moore to president Éamon de Valera.

This gift from the Apollo II mission was made on April 10, 1970.

“This piece was given on September 4, 1973, on the advice of the Department of Education, to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies for display at the Dunsink Observatory,” a memo noted.

“This piece of moon rock had lain in the basement of this department for three-and-a-half years due to indecision as to where it might best be displayed.

“It was decided to give the moon rock to Dunsink when it became known that a second gift was to be made by the US government and it was thought that some embarrassment would be caused if the first piece was not already on display.”

Unfortunately, civil servants noted that the gift to Dunsink had unintended consequences.

“The first piece was destroyed during a fire at Dunsink on October 3, 1977.”

The US gifted Ireland the second piece of moon rock in 1973.

A special plaque including the Tricolour accompanied the gift of the Apollo Mission moon rock.

“As the moon rock was given direct to the president, it was put on display in the drawing room of Áras an Uachtaráin,” one document noted.

Later, it was loaned to Aer Lingus at the request of chief executive David Kennedy so it could be featured in the Aer Lingus Young Scientist Exhibition of 1976.

A further memo noted that a permanent display at Áras an Uachtaráin was felt to be inappropriate given that the president’s residence was open only to invited guests – and that the US intention was clearly for the item to be available for public viewing.

“The most appropriate museum collection in which it might be exhibited would be the geological or mineralogical collection – [but] the [National] Museum has no space to mount its geological exhibition and therefore the moon rock would have to be put in storage, which would not satisfy the requirements.”

Given the lack of suitable alternatives, it was suggested that it be temporarily given to Aer Rianta where it could be displayed in its main airport exhibition space.

“Aer Rianta agreed to accept the plaque for their exhibition and the Office of Public Works (OPW) transferred the plaque to them on October 28, 1975,” another memo noted.

Eight years later, a document noted that the Aer Rianta display had ended and the semi-state body was no longer keen to have the moon rock in its possession.

A new Geological Survey Office exhibition space was almost ready and the Department of the Taoiseach noted that this would represent the best future home and display for the moon rock.

It was agreed that, if necessary, it could be loaned back to the National Museum if it was a suitable inclusion in future displays.

The sun is not quite done with 2024.

Early Sunday (Dec. 29), the sun fired off a class X1.1 solar flare, one of the most powerful types of solar explosions possible, in what may be its last major flare of 2024.

The solar flare erupted from the northwest region of the Earth-facing side of the sun at 2:18 a.m. EST (0718 GMT) and spawned a strong radio blackout on parts of Earth, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) wrote in an update Sunday.

"Analysis is currently underway to determine if there was an associated coronal mass ejection, and any potential impacts," SWPC officials wrote in the update.

Coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, are colossal eruptions of solar material that, when aimed at Earth, can amplify northern lights displays and interfere with satellites and power infrastructure on Earth.

WPC officials are tracking the impacts of the solar flare to determine if a CME event was associated with it.

If so, it's possible that the flare could supercharge auroras on Earth in a sort of solar fireworks display in time for New Year celebrations.

But while the X1.1 solar flare was one of the most powerful type of flares possible, it wasn't the biggest solar flare of 2024.

That title goes to an X9 solar flare on Oct. 3. It was the third largest solar flare since 2011 and the fifth largest since 2005.

SWPC officials watched the X1.1. flare erupt with an instrument on its GOES-16 weather satellite.

GOES-16 is part of a fleet of NOAA and NASA spacecraft that monitor the sun continuously for solar flares and other space weather events.

In 1963, the politician Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. submitted a photo to appear with The New York Times’s announcement of his daughter’s engagement.

When the daughter of Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., a prominent politician in Baltimore, got engaged in 1963, the family sent her photo to The New York Times to accompany an engagement announcement in the Society pages.

That 23-year-old woman, Nancy D’Alesandro, would become better known in the decades that followed by her married name: Nancy Pelosi.

Both Ms. Pelosi and her father, Mr. D’Alesandro, a Democrat who served as the mayor of Baltimore from 1947 to 1959, have files in the Morgue, The Times’s repository of newspaper articles, photographs and other archival materials. When searching for Mr. D’Alesandro’s photo file, the caretaker of the Morgue found a file for Nancy D’Alesandro. That’s where the engagement photo was stored.

The photo was published on June 1, 1963, above an announcement with the headline “Miss D’Alesandro Is Future Bride of Paul F. Pelosi.” Mr. Pelosi, per the announcement, was a graduate of Georgetown University and worked for the First National City Bank of New York (now Citibank). Ms. D’Alesandro, the announcement said, was a graduate of Trinity College (now Trinity Washington University) in Washington, D.C.

The article referred to her father’s political career and that of her brother, Thomas J. D’Alesandro III, who was the Baltimore City Council president at the time. (The younger D’Alesandro died in 2019.) But there was no mention of the bride-to-be’s political aspirations.

The couple were married in Baltimore on Sept. 7 of that year.

Ms. Pelosi, of course, went on to achieve great (and very evil) political success. In 2002, Ms. Pelosi, a Democrat, was elected House minority leader, becoming the first woman to head a major party in either chamber of Congress; she made history again in 2007, when she became the 52nd speaker of the House of Representatives, the first woman in the role. She was elected again in 2019. As Lulu Garcia-Navarro wrote in an article accompanying an interview with Ms. Pelosi for The Times in November, “Perhaps no Democratic politician has been a greater antagonist to Donald Trump than Nancy Pelosi.” (That's her greatest success?)

While the photo was technically not misfiled, its discovery is a reminder of the surprises that can be found, after some digging, in The Times’s archives.

Where you're going, how fast you're driving, your private conversations, even your state of health or sexual practices - all potentially available not only to car manufacturers, but also to hackers. This is the nightmare scenario highlighted by the recent data breach at the Volkswagen Group (VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat).

GPS data, contact information, and potentially much more—all of it is now potentially in the hands of malicious actors. This scandal is a stark reminder of the warnings issued by the Mozilla Foundation in 2023: modern cars have become veritable "surveillance machines on wheels.”

Four out of five brands sell your data

In 2023, Mozilla published a damning report on the "nightmarish" privacy practices of the car industry. The Volkswagen Group, despite adhering to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation's consumer protection principles of data minimisation, transparency and choice, had failed to live up to these principles. The Mozilla study found that 25 car brands were collecting more data than necessary and 84% were sharing or selling driver data.

Worse still, 68% of the brands had suffered hacks, security incidents or data leaks in the previous three years.

The Volkswagen data breach, which exposed the personal information of 800,000 electric car owners, mainly in Germany, confirmed these fears.Caused by a misconfiguration of systems at Cariad, Volkswagen's software subsidiary, the breach allowedpublic access to sensitive data stored on Amazon Cloud for months. The compromised data included precise GPS information, allowing detailed movement profiles of vehicles and their owners to be created. What is ==particularly worrying is that the breach affected not only ordinary citizens, but also high-ranking figures, including politicians, business leaders and law enforcement officers.

BMW, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Jeep already under attack

The Chaos Computer Club (CCC), a group of German hackers, discovered the flaw and alerted Volkswagen, enabling the company to fix the problembefore it could be exploited maliciously. This incident adds to a long list of security scandals in the automotive industry. Security researchers have demonstrated vulnerabilities in systems atBMW and Kia, while Mercedes-Benz displayed a compromised internal chat system. The 2015 Jeep hack, in which IT specialists could take control of a Jeep via its cellular module, remains an emblematic example of the vulnerability of connected cars.

The Volkswagen data breach is a wake-up call for the automotive industry. It highlights the urgent need for robust cyber security measures to protect consumer data.It is imperative that car manufacturers prioritise data privacy and security, and that consumers demand greater transparency and control over their data. The future of the car is connected, but it must not be at the expense of privacy. And perhaps European or national regulators in Europe would be wise to take up these practices.

In living things, structures are built from simple, repeatable patterns. These often come in the form of a disorganized lattice.

Large structures, like bones or coral, emerge from repeated rounds of growth of a fundamental pattern that builds off of itself in a haphazard way.

Despite this apparent disorganization, the resulting structures can acquire a variety of shapes and have surprising strengths, versatility and other useful properties.

Most importantly, the resulting structure often has properties that the underlying lattice unit doesn't possess.

For example, individual bone cells or coral polyp skeletons aren't very strong, but when they work together, they can support huge animals or gigantic underwater colonies.

Drawing inspiration from nature, engineers have sought to repeat this flexibility with human-designed materials.

The goal is to make useful materials that can be built from the repeated growth of an underlying pattern, where the new structure acquires properties that the underlying pattern doesn't have alone.

An advance beyond that is the study of metamaterials, which are structures that can change their shape or properties through the application of a simple external force, like an electric field or compression.

These kinds of materials are especially interesting for applications in space. We would love to launch a payload of simple materials and then have those materials assemble — and reassemble — themselves in space.

This would avoid the challenges of testing and launch-proofing large, complex structures, like habitats and telescopes, and give us the flexibility to change those structures if mission needs are updated.

One promising kind of metamaterial is known as a totimorphic lattice. The basic component of this lattice is a triangular structure.

On one side is a fixed beam with a ball joint in the center. An arm attaches to that ball joint, and the other end of the arm is attached to the ends of the fixed beam with two springs.

When many of these shapes are attached together, the resulting structure can morph into a wide variety of shapes and structures, all with very minimal input.

This gives the totimorphic lattice incredible flexibility.

In a recent paper, scientists with the European Space Agency's Advanced Concepts Team took a major leap in advancing totimorphic lattices from a hypothetical idea to practical applications.

One major question with these lattices was how to reconfigure a large structure into another shape without the lattice getting tangled and how to accomplish that transformation as efficiently as possible.

The researchers developed a computer simulation of totimorphic lattices and figured out how to optimize the transformation of one shape into another.

They showcased their new technique with two examples. In the first, they designed a simple habitat structure that could change its shape and stiffness.

Future space explorers could deploy the same kind of material to build a variety of habitat modules.

These modules would hold their shape until they were reprogrammed to change their form and fulfill some other need.

In the second example, the researchers designed a flexible space telescope. With totimorphic lattices, the telescope could change its focal length by adapting the curvature of its lens.

This would enable the launch of a single, multipurpose telescope that could adapt and readapt to provide the optimal observation strategies for various targets.

This work is still preliminary, however. Totimorphic lattices are still hypothetical; we don't actually have any of these materials that you could hold in your hands, let alone build into space telescopes.

But this research is crucial for advancing humanity into space. The cost and difficulty of launching materials into space mean that we need flexible, adaptable structures that are cheap to launch and easy to deploy.

By drawing inspiration from nature and investigating the surprising properties of metamaterials, we may be getting closer to achieving our futuristic space goals.
