The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his advisors were met by Russian missiles as they arrived in Odessa, Ukraine for an official visit.

Mitsotakis was about to meet the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky when an explosion hit the city center a few hundred yards from the Greek delegation. State Minister Stavros Papastavrou has confirmed to Greek media that there are no injuries among the Greek delegation following the blast.

An Air Force contractor accused of spilling military secrets about Russia to a Ukrainian girlfriend has been pictured for the first time.

Retired Army lieutenant colonel David Franklin Slater, 63, was arrested Saturday on charges of illegally disclosing national defense information and conspiracy.

He plead not guilty to all three charges on Tuesday and is set to be released from jail on Wednesday pending trial.

The veteran, who retired in 2020, served in Afghanistan and Germany during his time in the Army. His social media likes show he had an interest for Russian and Ukrainian women.

He was assigned to the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and had Top Secret security clearance from August 2021 until April 2022, attending briefings between February and April 2022 about Russia's war with Ukraine, the Justice Department said.

Despite having signed paperwork pledging not to disclose classified information, he allegedly intentionally and improperly shared details about military targets and Russian capabilities on an online messaging dating platform with an unindicted co-conspirator who claimed to be a woman living in Ukraine.

The co-conspirator is referred to as Slater's 'secret informant love' and described him as her 'secret agent.'

Court documents show she showed a keen interest in how the war was progressing and what any future plans might be. At least nine messages were identified by authorities where the woman asks for specific details about the military operation.

'American Intelligence says that already 100 percent of Russian troops are located on the territory of Ukraine. Do you think this information can be trusted?' the woman asks on March 7.

Four days later, she is seen asking specifics about data shown in one of the offices.

'Dear, what is shown on the screens in the special room?? It is very interesting,' she writes.

'By the way, you were the first to tell me that NATO members are traveling by train and only now (already evening) this was announced on our news. You are my secret informant love! How were your meetings? Successfully?' the woman confirms.

Body parts: Four people were in custody after severed body parts of a man and woman were found scattered on Long Island last week — as authorities unearthed more remains, sources told The Post. The collars came Tuesday, after cops raided a home on Railroad Avenue in Amityville late Monday, sources and neighbors said. (Wasn’t there a horror movie with Amityville in the title?)

Although cops didn’t find any human remains at the home, they found more dismembered limbs hidden in Bethpage State Park and miles away in a wooded area of West Babylon, the Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement Tuesday.A man’s tattooed arm was found in Babylon, LI.

Authorities believe the newly discovered remains belong to the same two people whose body parts were uncovered Feb. 29 in Southards Pond Park in Babylon, the release said. Cops haven’t publicly identified the victims, but said in the release that the assortment oflimbs belong to a 59-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man, both of whom lived at the same address in the city of Yonkers in Westchester County.

“Based on the investigation, this appears to be an isolated incident with no threat to the public,” the release added. “The investigation is continuing. “

Police did not mention a possible motive for the killings.But sources told NBC New York that authorities are looking into whether the murders were linked to a possible love triangle. Thefirst body part was found Thursday morning by a girl walking to school with a group of friendson Siegel Boulevard — which is on the east side of Southards Park in Babylon, Suffolk County.

On Monday night, battering ram-wielding officers busted through the front door of one of the units on Railroad Avenue sometime around 10:30 p.m., a neighbor told The Post. “There were detectives and police going into my neighbor’s house, so I came over to see what was happening,” she said.

“They had bashed in the door, and there were a bunch of people standing inside the house, cops talking to my neighbors. They had already taken some people away.”

She said she doesn’t know much about the neighbors in question, except that they’re renters who work nights and brought a number of occupants with them.

“Cops were here all night,” she told The Post. “I watched as long as I could stay awake, and when I woke up in the morning, they were all still here. “One of them finally told me what they were looking for [and] what this was about,” she said. “I was terrified. I just stopped asking questions.”

The girl on her way to school called her dad after spotting a dismembered left arm in the bushes. Her father went to the scene, then called the cops to report the stomach-turning discovery, according to sources. Officers swept the area in a gory hunt, andeventually turned up more limbs and the two unattached heads.

None of the remains appear to have been in the park very long, police said Friday. “Preliminarily, it appears it’s a matter of a small amount of days, if not hours,” Suffolk County Detective Lt. Kevin Beyrer told reporters Thursday night. One of the heads — as well as a right arm and leg — are thought to belong to the same female victim, law enforcement sources told The Post. The other head, as well as two arms, seem to be from the same man, they added.

The man’s tattooed left arm —which is missing fingertips — could mean the victim has a record, according to sources. Perhaps his killers didn’t want him identified through his fingerprints, because that might lead authorities to them, a source said. Police hope the tattoos will help identify him.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) failed to earn enough support from states to bring a resolution to ban paying former President Trump’s legal bills to a vote.

Henry Barbour, who serves as Mississippi’s national committeeman, confirmed to several news outlets that the resolutions he draftedthat would have prohibited the committee from covering the former president’s growing legal bills is dead.

The RNC is meeting Friday in Houston to elect a new chair after former Chair Ronna McDaniel announced she would resign on March 8.

Barbour confirmed to Politico that the resolution is “dead”and won’t be voted on during Friday’s meeting because he only received co-sponsors from eight out of 10 required states to bring the resolution to a vote.

Trump has already endorsed his preferred replacement for McDaniel’s former seat, RNC general counsel Michael Whatley. He also endorsed his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to serve as the next co-chair.

Lara Trump previously said she would spend “every single penny” of RNC funds to reelect her father-in-law to the White House.

Republican critics say the move is Trump’s attempt to streamline the RNC with his campaign, prompting the major question of whether the party will pay his legal bills. Trump currently faces 91 felony charges across four separate investigations, and he was recently ordered to pay more than $355 million in a civil fraud case in New York.

Trump’s campaign advisers have said he won’t ask the RNC for help with his legal bills, but according to federal election filings posted in January, the former president’s fundraising committees spent nearly $30 million on legal fees in the second half of 2023. Toothpaste based on the mineral hydroxyapatite, popular across Asia and much of Europe today, is finding its first foothold in the U.S. But the idea behind this alternative to fluoride-based toothpaste was conceived here in a short-lived NASA field center more than 50 years ago.

While working at NASA’s Electronics Research Center – active in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1964 to 1970 – Senior scientist Bernard Rubin discovered semiconductor crystals for electronics grew best in a silica gel. He quickly realized this gel diffusion system mimicked how hydroxyapatite crystals grow in bones and teeth, giving them their hardness. Building on this observation, he and a colleague patented a method for repairing a tooth by growing hydroxyapatite crystals on the tooth’s surface.

A few years later, a young Japanese businessman named Shuji Sakuma, having just founded Sangi Co. Ltd. in Tokyo, obtained the patented research and set about turning it into a product with the help of dental professionals. Lessons learned from Rubin’s patented methodology inspired the company’s Apadent and Apagard toothpaste lines in the early to mid-1980s. Japan and many other governments now recognize hydroxyapatite as an anticavity agent, and studies have found it to have other benefits, like improving whiteness and reducing sensitivity.

Zelensky would lose election – poll

The recently sacked General Zaluzhny is more popular than the current president of Ukraine

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would lose office if an election were held right now, according to a poll made public on Tuesday. Zelensky, whose current mandate expires this spring, has cancelled all elections, citing marital law.

A survey carried out by the Ukrainian pollster SOCIS shows Zelensky trailing in the first round and then losing a runoff to the recently sacked General Valery Zaluzhny. The SOCIS survey shows Zaluzhny with 41% of the vote in the first round, and 67.5% in a runoff,while the incumbent would secure only 23.7% initially and no more than 32.5% in the second round. (Zelensky will ban polls because they are under martial law, and try to find out who were surveyed, then they will ramp up propaganda on the people.)

Former President Pyotr Poroshenko would get just 6.4% of the vote in the first round, while the ex-speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Dmitry Razumov, just 5.6%, the pollster said.

If the parliamentary elections were held today, ahypothetical “Zaluzhny bloc” would gain 46.4% of the seats, and Zelensky’s party just 21.1%, while Poroshenko would max out at 7.5%.

Polls in late 2023 showed Zaluzhny giving Zelensky a challenge. However, the incumbent president was predicted to receive over 47% of the vote in the first round and defeat the general in a runoff.

However, over 65% of the respondents to the latest survey agreed that elections should not be held while the conflict is ongoing. The poll was carried out from February 22 to March 1, on a representative sample of 3,000 adult Ukrainians,with a margin of error of 2.1%.

Before entering politics, Zelensky was a comedian who played Ukraine’s president on a TV show. In 2019, he campaigned on a peace platform and challenged Poroshenko, winning the runoff in a landslide with 73% of the vote. His newly formed party, named after the TV show (Servant of the People) swept the June 2019 parliamentary elections as well.

Last December, Zelensky announced that there would be no elections for either president or parliament as long as martial law remains in force, essentially extending his mandate and that of the parliament indefinitely.

Zaluzhny was the supreme commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine until February 8, when he was replaced by Russian-born General Aleksandr Syrsky. According to multiple reports in the media, the former had been clashing with Zelensky and showing political ambitions, but Zaluzhny has never made any overt moves to become involved in Ukrainian politics.

“The only thing I will add from my side is that it is also necessary to attack the Russian Ministry of Defense or the intelligence service,” the MP said. “It is absolutely clear that this is not about civilian targets and not about the people, but about explaining to the Russian population that they are the aggressors,” he added.

When asked by the host of the show whether Kiesewetter thought that the attack on Moscow would be rational, the politician responded that those were Pistorius’ words.

“To attack Moscow with Taurus missiles?” the host asked. “No, Mr Lanz, now you are putting words into my mouth.No, if, within the framework of the agreement, we oblige Ukraine to use missiles only in the occupied territories, then they will act according to this principle,” Kiesewetter argued.

The calls for attack on Russian government buildings come amid the latest diplomatic row between Moscow and Berlin, following the leak of an audio recording in which German military officers discussed a potential attack on the Crimean Bridge.

Stunning images captured by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile reveal unique insights into planet formation around young stars.

In these portraits, emerging planet systems look more like miniature galaxies rather than disks of debris. The figures showcase clearly defined spiral arms arising from thick dust. Others exhibit less-defined clouds of luminescent matter. For astronomers, these observations present a unique opportunity to study how planets are born. The collection of images, captured by one of the world's most powerful telescopes, is one of the largest of its kind, framing more than 80 young stars and their planet-forming disks.

"This is really a shift in our field of study," Christian Ginski, a lecturer at the University of Galway in Ireland and lead author of three papers detailing the observations, said in a statement. "We've gone from the intense study of individual star systems to this huge overview of entire star-forming regions."

The young stars and their fledgling planets come from three major star-forming regions in the Milky Way galaxy. Some live in either the Taurus or Chameleon I gas clouds, both of which are located some 600 light-years from Earth, and others hail from the somewhat more distant Orion gas cloud about 1,600 light-years away.

The researchers found a wide variety of planet-forming disks that displayed significant differences based on which site they came from. In the Orion cloud, for instance, the astronomers observed groups of two or more stars surrounded only by faint planet-forming disks. Some of the most massive stars in the region had oddly shaped disks, suggesting a presence of very large planets that distort their respective disks with their enormous gravitational pulls.

"Some of these disks show huge spiral arms, presumably driven by the intricate ballet of orbiting planets," Ginski said.

Others in the dataset feature rings and large cavities, most likely carved out by forming planets. Still others are smooth and seemingly inactive.

More than 5,000 exoplanets, planets orbiting other stars than the sun, have been discovered by telescopes in space and on Earth since the 1990s. Some of the uncovered planetary systems look completely different from our solar system, and astronomers are therefore still trying to figure out what factors influence the outcomes of planet-forming alchemy. To observe these processes, however, is a difficult task. Regions where stars form are not only far away, but also usually obscured with dust.

To produce the latest collection of images, the astronomers used the VLT's Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research instrument (SPHERE), which holds a powerful adaptive optics system that can correct for blurring caused by Earth's atmosphere and produce sharper images. The researchers were thus able to image stars only half as massive as the sun, which most other instruments cannot do, according to the statement. Additional observations taken with the VLT's spectrograph X-shooter and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array provided information about the mass of the stars hosting the imaged planets as well as the amount of surrounding dust.

The researchers hope that, in the future, when the new Extremely Large Telescope comes online in Chile, they will be able to obtain more detailed images, perhaps detecting even small, rocky planets in inner regions of the emerging planetary systems.

Three papers describing the observations were published on Tuesday, March 5, in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics (here, here and here).

Boeing yesterday announced a $439.6 million contract to build the twelfth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) communications satellite for U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command. The WGS constellation delivers high-capacity, secure and resilient communications capabilities to the U.S. military and its allies.

The constellation's responsive and steerable beams provide connectivity via the Protected Tactical Enterprise Service (PTES) ground system and enhanced anti-jam communications by combining the U.S. military's jam-resistant Protected Tactical Waveform with antenna nulling in the Ka band.

Boeing's WGS-12 will offer significant performance improvements due to the use of advanced manufacturing techniques, like additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping and agile development.

The anti-jam capability of Boeing's new Protected Tactical Satcom Prototype payload will also be integrated on WGS-12, providing a second Protected Wideband Satellite to the U.S. military, and expanding anti-jam tactical communications capacity for U.S. warfighters and allies to operate in multiple contested theaters.

According to Michelle Parker, Boeing's VP of Space Mission Systems, WGS-12 will provide the military with more than 1,500 individually steerable, shapeable beams in the Ka band.

Boeing is currently building WGS-11 at its El Segundo, Calif., site.

Satellite operators are being called in to help keep Europe and Asia connected after subsea internet cables in the Red Sea were severed last week.

Four of around 15 submarine cables in the Red Sea have been affected, according to Hong Kong-based cable operator HGC Global Communications, which is helping reroute affected traffic.

Two of these come together at the area of the cut, the Washington Post reported citing a subsea cable expert at research company TeleGeography, meaning just three cables have been severed.

Still, HGC said in a March 4 update that about a quarter of the traffic passing between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East has been disrupted.

The Yemen-based and Iranian-backed Houthi movement that has been attacking ships in the Red Sea has denied responsibility for the incident, CNN reported, and has blamed British and US military units operating in the area.

A Seacom executive told CNN it could take up to eight weeks to repair the cables, pending permits from Yemen’s maritime authority.

In the meantime, subsea cable operators are rerouting internet traffic between the continents, sometimes via less direct routes.

“There are reports for example in East Africa of the internet slowing down fairly significantly,” said Rhys Morgan, a regional vice president for media and networks sales at satellite fleet operator Intelsat.

Slower internet connections have a financial impact on companies with mission-critical data, Morgan said, while governments and other internet users with sensitive data face having it rerouted via less secure countries.

Intelsat and other operators with satellites overhead can offer customers a space-based route for sending internet traffic from point A to point B.

Morgan told SpaceNews March 5 that Intelsat satellites are providing backup connectivity for a couple of customers that were sending data via subsea cable before the Red Sea incident.

While it remains unclear how the cables were severed, he said the connectivity issues highlight a growing need for hybrid subsea cable and satellite networks.

The increasing geopolitical importance of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, and growing tensions in the region, prompted media speculation that Russia might have been behind a subsea cable failure in early 2022, although no evidence has emerged to suggest this.

Morgan said connectivity-related incidents are generally getting “more malicious than they’ve been and there’s definitely an uptick in those.” There are also “discussions around submarines sitting near cables, intercepting traffic.”

According to Morgan, subsea cable users with antennas and other equipment already in place to tap into a satellite network backup can get communications restored within 15 minutes.

“If it’s a very large and sophisticated service and there’s a lot of terrestrial work needed then it could take a fair bit longer,” he added, “hours or possibly days.”

Satellite networks can also help restore communications relatively quickly after a natural disaster knocks out terrestrial infrastructure.

Intelsat and SES said their satellites restored connectivity within days after a January 2022 volcanic eruption damaged international and domestic telecoms cables connecting Tonga in the South Pacific.

The Egyptian pound crashed Wednesday as the government initiated a devaluation of more than 38%, while also hiking interest rates, in order to attract billions more in loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Already with one of the world's highest levels of foreign debt, Egypt is trying to avoid potential default in the coming years, and has been propped up by loans and central bank deposits from Persian Gulf states and the IMF. Like other governments in the region, particularly Lebanon, Egypt has long had a severe shortage of foreign-currency reserves, resulting in the Central Bank of Egypt artificially propping up the pound's value, leading to a robust black market exchange.

The central bank announced Wednesday, "The unification of the exchange rate is crucial, as it facilitates the elimination of foreign-exchange backlogs following the closure of the spread between the official and the parallel exchange-rate markets." It will allow "the exchange rate to be determined by market forces."

The statement said it further raised the overnight lending rate to 28.25% and its overnight deposit rate to 27.25%, and crucially that it would let the Egyptian pound trade freely on international markets, in a bid toward quashing inflation.

The central bank said of its drastic moves that they are "backed by the steadfast support of multilateral and bilateral partners" and that "sufficient funding has been secured to avail foreign exchange liquidity."

Last month we previewed the $35 billion deal that will see the United Arab Emirates develop a sprawling portion of prime Mediterranean coast in Egypt's northwest. It marks the largest foreign direct investment in an urban development project in the country's modern history. This expected windfall of foreign exchange is badly needed as local businesses have been suffering and the cost of imported goods has soared.

Economic conditions have only steadily worsened by the increasing strain of over five months of war in neighboring Gaza, amid an ever-present risk that all of this together could fuel popular unrest and destabilization in northern Africa's most populace country.

The Wall Street Journal noted, "The market reaction was swift, as Egypt’s pound lost more than half its value against the U.S. dollar, and was trading at around 48.0, compared with 30.9 at Tuesday’s close."

So a big question will remain whether the inflation surge will lead to a spike in local instability at a very delicate geopolitical moment. The Sisi government and military deep state has long been propped up by Washington, in order to ensure the Camp David Accords and historic peace with Israel; however, the opposition and outlawed Muslim Brotherhood and its ultra-conservative Islam still holds sway over huge swathes of the population.

China holds a seemingly positive stance towards the use of space resources, according to a recent submission made by a Chinese delegation to the United Nations.

The delegation appears to state that China considers space resource utilization as permissible, but must be conducted in accordance with the Outer Space Treaty (OST) of 1967.

China’s submission treats the use of space resources as legal, but also calls for adherence to the existing frameworks of international space law, with the OST as the cornerstone.

The document was submitted to the Working Group on Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities of the Legal Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

COPUOS is a body of the United Nations tasked with governing the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity, overseeing matters related to space science and technology and their applications. The Working Group plays a critical role in addressing the legal challenges posed by the utilization of space resources, helping to shape the international legal framework that will govern these activities.

The submission could be seen as a beneficial development, helping to set the stage for a dialogue on the legal frameworks for governing the use of space resources.

“This engagement by China on the international discussion on space resources is a positive development,” Christopher Johnson, director of legal affairs and space law for the Secure World Foundation, told SpaceNews. “It tells us that China is taking international fora like COPUOS seriously, and seems to be engaging in good faith with the fora and with the process.

“Additionally, it’s welcome to have a clear statement of Chinese positions on these issues, and this informs other States in their approach and preparations to the international discussions going on at the UN.”

Johnson interprets the Chinese stance as seemingly largely aligned with the broader international consensus on the use of space resources. That is, the right to possess and use space resources is not only desirable by space agencies and national governments, but is also permissible under the current international law.

Discussion and consideration of the use and legality utilizing space resources has grown in recent years due to advancements in the space sector, the rise of commercial companies and renewed interest in the moon.

Ukrainian refugees living in subsidized housing in Ireland may soon see their welfare benefits slashed, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys has warned, according to local media. The current arrangement is “not sustainable in the long run,” according to the minister.

The government already has a plan in motion to cut welfare fornew arrivals, under which weekly allowances will be reduced from the current €220 ($239) to €38.80 ($42), while housing will now be provided for 90 days rather than indefinitely.

Some 100,000 Ukrainians already in receipt of welfare benefits in Ireland will not be affected – at least for now. When Humphreys explained the policy change to TDs (members of the Irish parliament) in January, she said similar changes “down the road” could affect “anybody in state-provided accommodation, regardless of what date they arrived.” The new rules were expected to come into force by the end of January, but have yet to be signed into law.

Humphreys’ new remarks, which were reported by the Irish Independent on Wednesday, are the strongest yet made by the minister on the matter, the newspaper noted.

Ukrainians who arrived in Ireland in the first waves of 2022 “genuinely had nothing” and needed higher protection, she explained, but “things have changed slightly since then.”

After examining the bullet in question, Euro-Med Monitor discovered that its form and dimensions were identical to those of the bullet described above. Unlike other bullets with diametres of 5.56 mm, this one has an especially high ability to penetrate 3 mm of steel, despite not being considered armour-piercing.

Scientists look for signs of alien technology in mysterious perfectly synchronised solar system

Scientists are looking for evidence of alien technology in a faraway solar system with the most perfect mathematical alignment and synchrony of planets ever seen.

The solar system, about 100 light years away from ours, has six planets orbiting an orange dwarf star called HD 110067.

Each of the planets, researchers say, orbits in harmony with its adjacent ones in extremely rare perfect synchrony, suggesting they likely remain undisturbed since their formation a billion years ago.

The six planets, scientists found, move similar to a perfectly synchronized symphony known as resonance that is “precise” and “very orderly”.

“Amongst the over 5000 exoplanets discovered orbiting other stars than our Sun, resonances are not rare, nor are systems with several planets. What is extremely rare though, is to find systems where the resonances span such a long chain of six planets,” Hugh Osborn from the University of Bern, who was part of the team that found this planet system, said.

Astronomers are looking for radio signals from these planets, smaller than the size of Neptune, that may likely point to evidence for past or present alien technology, or technosignatures.

The idea of searching for “technosignatures” on other worlds has been considered by astronomers for more than half a century.

On Earth, for instance, one of the strongest such signs of technology is the emission from nightside city lights.

But finding signs of alien civilisations using such signatures is difficult mainly since the Milky Way galaxy is very big.

Researchers can study the spectrum of radio emissions that are produced from Earth-based technology and extrapolate this to what an alien world may produce.

While looking for signs of technology in other worlds, researchers generally focus on radio transmissions such as the famous “Wow!” signal.

In the latest study, scientists covered frequencies from 1 to 11.2 giga hertz using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) in West Virginia, US.

Researchers did not find any technosignatures in the current study, but say this “unusual” solar system remains an interesting target for future search for the signs of alien life as some of these worlds are likely to have liquid water.

After struggling for months to fill seats on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine advisory committee, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced nine new appointees. All have financial ties to vaccine makers or have publicly promoted COVID-19, RSV and HPV vaccines — or both.

Nine new members named to the committee that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on vaccine recommendations have financial ties to pharmaceutical companies or have worked with public health agencies to promote the COVID-19, RSV or HPV vaccines.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in mid-February appointed the new members to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which shapes U.S. vaccine policy.

Commenting on the new appointments, Children’s Health Defense (CHD) President Mary Holland said:

“ACIP has long been a rubber stamp for any and all vaccines Big Pharma wants to push. But the brazenness of the HHS-Big Pharma fusion has never been so much on display.

“The only silver lining in this grotesque display is that more and more people are waking up to the reality that ACIP has nothing to do with health and everything to do with profit.”

The ACIP is described as an independent, nonfederal expert body made up of professionals with clinical, scientific and public health expertise. The committee decides which vaccines should be recommended to the public, who should take them and how often — recommendations the CDC typically rubber stamps.

This external advisory committee includes a chair, an executive secretary, and 15 voting members — 14 medical experts and a lay member representing consumers.

It also includes a non-voting body that offers input composed of eight ex officio members from other federal health departments and liaison representatives from health-related professional organizations like the American Association of Pediatrics.

However, when the committee convened last week to make its spring recommendations, it was missing so many voting members that it lacked a quorum. Vacant committee spaces on the “independent” committee had to be temporarily filled by government employees —- ex-officio members can be sworn in as temporary voting members.

Over the last year, HHS struggled to fill eight vacancies. An additional four members will be needed when existing members’ four-year terms are up at the end of June.

As seats on the committee sat unfilled, industry news sites like StatNews suggested the committee “appears to be atrophying” and Medriva said there is an “unprecedented lack of expertise in the committee.”

When HHS finally announced the new members to fill the vacancies, it was also reported the new members would be filling spots at last week’s meeting. However, they had not yet taken their positions at the time the meeting occurred on Feb. 28-29.

A CDC spokesperson confirmed to The Defender that nine members have been appointed to the committee, including Dr. Helen Keipp Talbot, an infectious diseases researcher at Vanderbilt University who previously served on the committee from 2018 through 2022 and will rejoin the committee to serve as chair.

Members typically are not eligible for reappointment, but in Talbot’s case, the HHS provided a waiver to that existing policy.

Australian Community Leaders Call on Albanese to Isolate Apartheid Israel, Scrap Weapons Deals

Favors that one country gives to another imply leverage that the former can exert on the latter. Withholding, or even threatening to withhold, such largesse, focuses minds within the recipient country’s government and can influence its policies.

The favors that the United States has given to Israel have been enormous, as reflected in $318 billion, adjusted for inflation, in foreign aid through 2022 — far more than the United States has given to any other country since World War II. Thus, the leverage the United States has available to use on Israel is large. But it has used almost none of it.

Even when Israeli policies fly in the face of U.S. preferences, the result is nothing more than a verbal slap on the wrist. Examples include the countless times that construction of more Israeli settlements in occupied territory are followed by timid official U.S. statements but no action — such as Secretary of State Antony Blinken saying last month that he was “disappointed” by Israel’s latest announcement of new settlement construction in the West Bank.

When the subject of employing the leverage is raised, voices in response usually say something similar to what retired general David Petraeus said recently, which was that the United States is “committed” to Israeli security, that we tend to “overestimate the leverage,” and that Israel is currently in a “life and death situation.”

In fact, the days of Israel being a beleaguered, vulnerable state surrounded by strong, hostile neighbors are long gone. Israel has the most potent military in the Middle East — even just at the conventional level, let alone when considering nuclear weapons. Israel’s military offsets any numerical inferiority in raw numbers of troops with advanced technology that far surpasses what any other state in the region enjoys. Despite frequently heard rhetoric that attributes to some regime or group a supposed dedication to “destroying” Israel, no enemy of Israel has anything close to the capability of doing so.

One might argue that this secure Israeli position is thanks in part to all that U.S. assistance, and thus is a reason to continue the aid. But Israel is a wealthy country. It is in the richest 20 percent or even 10 percent of nations in the world, depending on how one measures GDP per capita. Israel can pay by itself for that potent military. The voluminous U.S. aid is a subsidy by American taxpayers to Israeli taxpayers.

Therefore, reduction or termination of the aid would not endanger Israeli security, no matter how much the United States considers itself committed to that security. Israel would spend what it must to meet its own conception of security. But interruption of the voluminous no-strings-attached American subsidy would certainly get the attention of Israeli politicians and thus can have considerable influence on Israeli policy.

In many respects, spending on, and use of, the Israel Defense Forces does not enhance Israeli security and may even detract from it. In recent years, the IDF has been largely occupied with keeping down a subjugated and thus discontented Palestinian population in the occupied territories and protecting Israeli settlements there. This is not a matter of securing Israel but instead of incurring the costs of choosing to cling to conquered territory and sustaining an illegal occupation.

The full range of costs of this use of the IDF was underscored by the lethal Hamas attack on southern Israel last October. One reason Hamas was able to perpetrate its atrocity so easily was that Israel had moved forces from the area in question to the West Bank.

Bloomberg reports that New York Community Bancorp plans to announce an equity investment of more than $1 billion led by Steven Mnuchin’s Liberty Strategic Capital, Hudson Bay Capital and Reverence Capital Partners, according to a spokesperson for the bank.

Liberty will invest $450 million, Hudson Bay $250 million and Reverence $200 million as part of the transaction, the spokesperson said.

In connection with the deal, NYCB will reduce the board to nine members, adding new directors, including Mnuchin and Joseph Otting, former comptroller of the currency.

Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated:

"In evaluating this investment, we were mindful of the Bank's credit risk profile. With the over $1 billion of capital invested in the Bank, we believe we now have sufficient capital should reserves need to be increased in the future to be consistent with or above the coverage ratio of NYCB's large bank peers."

Non-Executive Chairman Sandro DiNello stated,

Ukrainian police have raided a private reproductive clinic that has been allegedly “selling babies” to China. While the suspects are accused of “human trafficking,” surrogate motherhood is a legal gray area in Ukraine.

The scandalous case was brought to light by the country’s interior ministry late on Saturday. The police broke up a “human-trafficking” ring that was centered at a private reproductive clinic in Kiev.

Further details on the case were shared by the Deputy Interior Minister Anton Gerashenko on his Facebook page. The ring involved the head of the clinic, her son, as well as two other Ukrainian and three Chinese nationals. They were charged with human trafficking that may lead to 12 years in prison with property confiscation.

The majority of the clinic’s clients were single Chinese males of “certain orientation,” as Gerashenko put it. While the exact number of trafficked babies remains unknown, at least 140 more Chinese nationals are under investigation, the official added.

The price tag for a single baby was about $50,000. The hefty sum covered artificial insemination of a surrogate mom, legal support and organization of fictive marriages needed to facilitate smuggling children abroad. It’s unclear if the babies’ fathers were the ones who then adopted them.

Five newborn babies, believed to be about to be trafficked, were found by the investigators in private apartments across the Ukrainian capital and placed in maternity hospitals.

While the suspects stand accused of “human trafficking,” there’s a catch – surrogate motherhood is not regulated by any laws in Ukraine and lies in a legal gray zone. As it’s not explicitly prohibited by law, nothing more than a simple contract between a surrogate mom and would-be foster parents is required.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced plans Wednesday to send the National Guard to the New York City subway system to help police search passengers’ bags for weapons, following a series of high-profile crimes on city trains.

Hochul, a Democrat, said she will deploy 750 members of the National Guard to the subways to assist the New York Police Department with bag searches at entrances to busy train stations.

“For people who are thinking about bringing a gun or knife on the subway, at least this creates a deterrent effect. They might be thinking, ‘You know what, it just may just not be worth it because I listened to the mayor and I listened to the governor and they have a lot more people who are going to be checking my bags,’” Hochul said at a news conference in New York City.

The move came as part of a larger effort from the governor’s office to address crime in the subway, which included a legislative proposal to ban people from trains for three years if they are convicted of assaulting a subway passenger and the installation of cameras in conductor cabins to protect transit workers.

The deployment of the National Guard would bolster an enhanced presence of NYPD officers in the subway system. The governor said she will also send 250 state troopers and police officers from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, a state agency, to help with the bag searches.

FBI Electronics Technician Found Guilty of Child Exploitation Offenses

NASHVILLE – On March 4, 2024, a jury in the Middle District of Tennessee found Justin Carroll guilty of sexual exploitation of a minor, coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, receipt of child pornography, and transfer of obscene material to an individual under the age of sixteen, announced United States Attorney Henry C. Leventis.

According to evidence presented at trial, between June 2020 and April 27, 2021, Carroll, who was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as an electronics technician, engaged in sexually explicit chats and exchanged sexually explicit images with three fourteen-year-old females over various social media platforms after connecting with the minors on chatting websites. Carroll’s conduct was discovered after one of the victims mailed a Valentine’s Day package to the FBI office. Sexually explicit images of the minor females were found in Carroll’s social media accounts and on his cell phone. Images of Carroll were found in one of the minor’s social media accounts and on another minor’s cell phone. Carroll continued communicating with the fourteen-year-old victim who mailed the package, even after receiving an e-mail from her mother inquiring why her daughter mailed him a package and advising him of her daughter’s age.
