A Conversation with Rockwell "Rocky" Chin

Rockwell "Rocky" Chin

Rocky Chin is a retired government civil right attorney and member of the New York City Commission on Human Rights. He is a founder of the Asian American Bar Association of New York and among the first Asian Americans to lead the Basement Workshop, the iconic Asian American art & cultural grassroots organization located in Chinatown, New York. Rocky was involved in early conversations that led to the founding of the Asian American Arts Alliance, and subsequently served as President & Member of A4’s Board.

How did you first connect with A4?

A4 owes its creation to those who were active participants in the iconic Basement Workshop - the iconic Asian American art & cultural grassroots organization with humble beginnings in a basement at 54 Elizabeth Street in Chinatown, NYC. These artists and activists recognized that the Basement - under the initial leadership of Danny N.T. Yung and later the poet and activist Fay Chiang - had successfully birthed an incredible number of new and diverse AAPI creative ventures. The time had come to create a new organization. One that would be a fierce advocate for AAPI artists and organizations. One that would harness the strength of AAPI artists, activists, cultural heritage organizations, enhancing the AAPI community’s voice and presence. The Basement was something very special at the time it was formed - and it was that kind of spirit of working together to address common issues facing communities of color - that I think clearly motivated the early founders of the Asian American Arts Alliance.

Can you speak to the time period in which A4 was formed and the necessity behind it?

There were so few organizations like A4 when it came together in 1983. The issues that we were dealing with, having a voice in the cultural and arts world, addressing racism, stereotypes in the media, discrimination, anti-Asian violence addressing roles, and addressing stereotypes in the media..all that was nothing new to the activists that were involved in the early history of the Arts Alliance, because these were the common conversations that go back to the time period when the Basement Workshop was founded. I guess you could say A4’s founders were part of the first Asian American movement that included artists, which was very important for the movement. At the time A4 was founded, our AAPI numbers in the City were not large, even if you combined our diverse Asian Pacific communities together. But we were starting to become more visible, you know? This is all a reflection of the change in the immigration laws in 1965. So I guess you could say it took maybe the first 10 years of the late ‘70s and the early ‘80’s, for New York to accumulate and grow a population of families and diverse AAPI nationalities. At the time, when the Arts Alliance was formed, there was a blatant need to address the lack of Asian American artists on and off Broadway and in the media.

What roles have you seen A4 play in the AAPI community over the years and how has the need for an organization like A4 changed during that time?

A4 took on, over time, a variety of roles - surely advocacy, service and offering technical workshops, granting and even some programs e.g. music showcases, national conferences and festivals. With limited staff and volunteers, over time it had to focus on service and advocacy.

Currently, the world is experiencing dengue fever outbreaks in countries that include Columbia, Costa Rica, Haiti, Jamaica, Paraguay, and Panama. The World Health Organisation (“WHO”) will present two new texts for adoption by its governing body, the World Health Assembly, in Geneva on 27 May – 1 June.

The new Pandemic Treaty needs a two-thirds majority for approval and, if and once adopted, will come into effect after 40 ratifications. The amendments to the International Health Regulations (“IHR”) can be adopted by a simple majority and will be binding on all states unless they recorded reservations by the end of last year.

The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) has lost its battle against ivermectin. After a case was filed in court, the FDA has settled and agreed to remove webpages and its social media posts urging people to avoid the usage of the drug for covid treatment.

The FDA has already taken down a page that stated: “Should I take ivermectin to prevent or treat covid-19? No.” It will also delete posts, including one that reads: “You are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y’all. Stop it.”

In June 2022, three doctors, Paul Marik, Mary Talley Bowden, and Robert Apter, filed a lawsuit against the FDA and its secretary Robert Califf, as well as the Department of Health and Human Services and its secretary Xavier Becerra. They accused the FDA of meddling with their capacity to practice medicine. In September 2023, a court agreed with the doctors. Last week, the parties agreed on a settlement.

The tech mogul has announced his support for the Republican Party in the upcoming US presidential election

The US needs a red wave and will be finished if the Republican Party does not prevail in the 2024 presidential election, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

The billionaire, who had previously revealed he voted for Joe Biden in 2020, has since criticized the incumbent US president and clashed with his administration. Musk has repeatedly criticized Biden’s handling of the Southern US border crisis and has accused Democrats of being “controlled by the unions.”

“I voted 100% Dem until a few years ago. Now, I think we need a red wave or America is toast,” Musk wrote on X.

According to media reports, the entrepreneur became increasingly critical of Biden after Tesla, the top-selling electric-car company in the US, was excluded from a White House summit on EVs in 2021.

Last year Musk revealed that he had doubts he’d be voting for Biden in the 2024 presidential election. As of yet, however, he hasn’t endorsed Biden’s rival Donald Trump.

“I think I would not vote for Biden,” Musk told a DealBook summit in November, adding “I’m not saying I’d vote for Trump.”(He will never admit it but he has to, like a lot of other under the radar tech leaders)

Earlier this month the New York Times reported that Trump had met with Musk in Florida, as the former US president seeks a major cash infusion for his reelection campaign.

Musk confirmed the meeting but maintained that he is not donating to the Republican’s campaign.

“I was at a breakfast at a friend’s place and Donald Trump came by, that’s it,” he told former CNN host Don Lemon last week, adding that Trump had not requested any financial assistance.

“I’m not paying his legal bills in any way, shape or form. And he did not ask me for money,”Musk said.

Kremlin comments on calls for death penalty after terrorist attack

The Kremlin is not discussing the potential reinstatement of capital punishment, the Russian president’s spokesman said

The Kremlin is not involved in any talks on lifting Russia’s moratorium on the death penalty in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.

At least 137 people were killed in Friday’s massacre at the Crocus City concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow, and more than 180 were injured, according to officials. The atrocity has reignited a debate among lawmakers on reinstating capital punishment, which has effectively been banned in Russia since 1996.

“We are not taking part in this discussion,”Peskov said in response to a question from TASS news agency.

Supporters of the move, including the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR), Leonid Slutsky, have argued that an exception to the moratorium should be made for the four gunmen that carried out Friday’s attack.

The head of the United Russia faction in the State Duma, Vladimir Vasiliev, also stated after the tragedy that the idea of reintroducing the death penalty for acts of terrorism would be “deeply and professionally worked through”and that a decision will be made that will “meet the mood and expectations of our society.”

While the Russian criminal code technically has a provision for issuing the death penalty, courts are de facto banned from handing down such a sentence.

As explained by the head of the Federal Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation, Andrey Klishas, the reintroduction of capital punishment is legally impossible as neither chamber of Russia’s parliament “can overcome the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Russia on the issue of the death penalty.”

The head of Russia’s Constitutional Court, Valery Zorkin, previously pointed out that under the Constitution, everyone has the right to life, and therefore is guaranteed “the right not to be sentenced to death.” He suggested that thereintroduction of the death penalty would require the adoption of a new Constitution.

Meanwhile, the head of the State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation, Pavel Krasheninnikov, has argued that while the discussions on punishment for the terrorists are important, they should not be the main focus.

“Discussions about the death penalty, it seems to me, may lead us in the wrong direction,” the lawmaker said, insisting that “it is more important for us that such acts are not repeated.”

A group of gunmen stormed Crocus City Hall on the evening of March 22, just before a concert by the rock band Picnic. The venue, which has an estimated capacity of 7,500, was almost full. The terrorists killed the guards, opened fire on visitors, and then started a blaze, which quickly spread through the building.

Four men suspected of carrying out the attack have since been captured. Two of them have confessed in court, and are set to remain in custody until late May. They all face life in prison.

(Keeping these people alive in prison is much worse then getting the death penalty in Russia.)

Ukraine using US-made chemical weapons – Russian diplomat

Their deployment is a direct violation of international law, Moscow’s envoy to the OPCW has said

Ukraine has repeatedly used chemical weapons provided by the US against the Russian military, a senior diplomat claimed on Monday in an interview with the newspaper Izvestia.

Vladimir Tarabrin, Moscow’s Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and Ambassador to the Netherlands, noted that the use of chemical weapons is a flagrant violation of international law.

“Over the course of the special military operation,we have recorded cases of Ukraine’s Armed Forces deploying chemical weapons manufactured in the US,” Tarabrin said, saying that the deliveries are part of a well-established and illegal scheme of sending non-lethal chemical weapons to Kiev.

He stressed that the use of toxic chemicals by Ukraine has become systematic, as Western backing allows Kiev to violate international law with impunity. According to Tarabrin, theUkrainian military uses various types of home-made ammunition, grenades, and containers with unknown substances against Russian forces.

The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), an arms control treaty administered by the OPCW, an intergovernmental organization headquartered in The Hague, was adopted in January 1993 and came into force four years later. As of August 2022, 193 states had signed the treaty. Ukraine has ratified the document and accepted all its obligations.

The convention bans all member states from producing, acquiring, and stockpiling chemical weapons, as well as transferring them directly or indirectly. The signatories are also banned from using such weapons.

The diplomat stressed that Moscow is attracting the attention of international organizations, especially the OPCW, to the violations.

“I think the US and its dependents can only be stopped by maximum transparency, the identification of specific facts that show that they directly supply, or facilitate the supply, of these substances to Ukraine in violation of the CWC,” he said.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has repeatedly accused Kiev of preparing provocations with the use of chemical weapons, including acts on the territory of Ukraine. Last April, the ministry claimed that Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) was plotting such a provocation with the use of “hazardous chemicals” in the city of Sumy, in northeastern Ukraine. Kiev has denied the accusation.

NBC’s McDaniel mess threatens to explode

Network insiders are watching to see if more hosts and contributors speak out about the ex-RNC chair’s hiring.

The uproar inside NBC over Ronna McDaniel’s hiring spilled into Monday morning as more of the network’s top personalities denounced the deal with the former RNC chair, escalating a battle over the relationship between powerful media companies and Donald Trump’s loyalists.

The decision to hire McDaniel, which was unanimously supported by top network executives, has already divided and destabilized one of America’s most storied news organizations, with internal dismay flaring on text chains and Slack channels since the deal was announced late last week.

The dissent broke into the open Sunday when the network’s top political analyst, Chuck Todd, pilloried executives moments after McDaniel’s first network appearance, an interview with Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press.”

“There’s a reason why there’s a lot of journalists at NBC News uncomfortable with this,” Todd told Welker, citing prior “gaslighting” and “character assassination” from McDaniel’s RNC.

Welker and producers at “Meet the Press” knew in advance what Todd was going to say, according to people familiar with the situation, and did not discourage him from speaking out.

The on-air protests represent what could be a seminal moment in political media as news organizations continue to grapple with how to responsibly represent voices from the Trump right on their screens and in their pages without handing their platforms over to election deniers or bad faith actors who have attacked and attempted to discredit their own reporters.

“We weren’t asked our opinion of the hiring but, if we were, we would have strongly objected to it for several reasons,” Joe Scarborough said Monday at the top of “Morning Joe,” MSNBC’s flagship morning broadcast, with co-host Mika Brzezinski adding, “We hope NBC will reconsider its decision. It goes without saying that she will not be a guest on ‘Morning Joe’ in her capacity as a paid contributor.”

They then played a reel of McDaniel’s various comments questioning the outcome of the 2020 election.

Network insiders are now watching to see if other hosts and contributors speak their minds, as well, with eyes particularly peeled for MSNBC’s prime-time lineup Monday, where tent-pole anchor Rachel Maddow is set go live at 9 p.m.

It’s yet unclear whether the NBC-McDaniel relationship can survive the uproar. It was forged last year when NBC executives wooed her to land a Republican presidential debate, a high priority at the network. CNN had beat NBC in the race to host a Trump town hall, and securing a debate took on extra significance.

Through that process McDaniel built a good rapport with NBC News executives Carrie Budoff Brown, senior vice president of politics, and Rebecca Blumenstein, president of editorial. They secured a deal, at a price: McDaniel insisted MSNBC could not simulcast the debate.

After McDaniel announced last month she would leave the RNC, she signed with CAA and went looking for a TV contract. While in talks with other networks — she had serious discussions with CNN and ABC — NBC always had the inside track. “Ronna had a good experience with Carrie and Rebecca and felt more comfortable than with some of the other networks,” a person close to McDaniel said.

The McDaniel deal was unanimously supported by leaders of all their networks, according to an NBC insider, including by Rashida Jones, president of MSNBC. The internal backlash began on Friday morning after Budoff Brown sent an email announcing that McDaniel would appear “across all NBC News platforms.”

That sent panic through MSNBC, prompting Jones to tell employees that there were no plans to have McDaniel on the network, as the Wall Street Journal first reported. The NBC insider clarified to Playbook that there was no ban on McDaniel at MSNBC and that the cable network’s shows can use McDaniel as they see fit.

Interviews with executives, hosts, correspondents, and producers in the wake of Todd’s public excoriation revealed a breakdown in trust and communication among the company’s balkanized and ideologically fractured divisions.

To start, there is the message sent by hiring McDaniel on a nearly $300,000-a-year contract amid a growing sense inside the Washington bureau that Comcast sees its news division, which has been subject to recent layoffs and other cuts, as a divisive nuisance to be stripped down.

Ukrainian general condemns sympathy for dead draft dodgers

Citizens who criticize conscription efforts are playing into Russia’s hands, Land Forces Commander Aleksandr Pavlyuk has claimed

A senior Ukrainian military commander has lashed out at sections of the public and media for criticizing the enforcement of the draft in the country,claiming that the dissent amounts to collusion with Russia.

Some of Ukraine’s male population have risked a perilous swim across the Tisza River on the border with Romania in an effort to dodge the draft, with dozens reportedly dying in the process.

In a social media post on Sunday, General Aleksandr Pavlyuk, who heads the Ukrainian Land Forces, rebuked reports “about poor people drowning in the Tisza,” arguing that any such sympathy undermines the mobilization effort. His comments also came after claims of general unwillingness among Ukrainians to join the fight against Russia and a shortage of volunteers.

Earlier this month, the Ukrainian border guard service reported the 22nd drowning death the Tisza River since the hostilities with Russia broke out in February 2022. Separately, theservice has released images of officers beating and humiliating dozens of men after they were caught during attemptsto be smuggled across the border.

“Some of our citizens, unfortunately, no longer realize that their actions and public statements have turned into a powerful weapon in the hands of the enemy,” Pavlyuk said.He further accused “bloggers and the free media” of reducing the public debate on mobilization “to an animal level.”(Don’t forget Ukraine is a Democracy, consisting of Nazi leaders.)

In addition to the “moral support of draft avoidance,” the general hit out at the “harassment” of conscription officials, claiming that many are disabled veterans who “went through hell.”Ukrainian civilians now brand them “human-catchers,” the general fumed.

There are multiple videos circulating on Ukrainian social media which show the military using violence against men as they are being drafted.Pavlyuk claimed that the clips are taken “out of context”and that any criticism of conscription officers “fails on purpose to get to the main point: that it is illegal for men to avoid their constitutional duty of defending Ukraine.”

The Russian military estimated Ukrainian combat losses at over 444,000 as of the end of February. Earlier the same month, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky claimed that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed.

13 people trapped in Russian gold mine

Rescuers are working around the clock to reach the workers following the collapse of the mine, Amur Region’s authorities have said

An operation to rescue 13 people trapped underground following thecollapse of a gold mine in Russia’s Amur Region has entered its seventh day.

There has been no contact with those inside the Pioner (Pioneer) mine, but there is hope that they may still be alive, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported on Sunday. The facility has good ventilation, while the groundwater that flows into the shaft is drinkable, the outlet explained.

The mine collapsed on March 18 when 13 workers employed by a contractor specializing in mine-development operations were inside. Since then, rescuers have been working around the clock to reach them.Hundreds of tons of rock have been removed from the pit, and the first of three planned curtain walls– which are needed to ensure the safety of the response teams – has been set up.

Rescuers are in the process of drilling four surveillance shafts to find out what happened to the miners, according to the Amur Region’s administration. They’ll be used to deploy a special camera that can work at a depth of up to 300 meters and is resistant to water.

Access roads are also being prepared to install a powerful water pump at the Pioner mine, which would allow water to be removed from the pit more effectively, it added.

The regional authorities also said on Monday that a ground-penetrating radar will arrive on site in the coming days. It’s needed to quickly assess the state of rock masses, ice and water inside the mine as the response effort continues.

Relatives of the trapped miners have arrived in the nearby town of Zeya. They’re being provided with daily updates about the rescue operation. Psychologists from the Emergencies Ministry are also providing them with assistance, according to the administration.

On Monday, the local branch ofRussia’s Investigative Committee announced that the managing director of the Pioner mine had been detained. A criminal case on the violation of safety regulationsduring the execution of works had earlier been launched in relation to the incident.

Immune imprinting occurs when previous exposures leave such a strong immune memory that the body continues to produce antibodies targeting the past experience.

People who have taken at least three doses of the original version of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine have been strongly immune imprinted, a study by the University of Washington (UW) found.

Consequently, when vaccinated with the most recent COVID-19 XBB.1.5 mRNA boosters, recipients produced few to no antibodies specific to the XBB.1.5 variant.

Immune imprinting occurs when previous infections or vaccinations leave such a strong immune memory that the body continues to produce immune cells and antibodies targeting the previous immune experience—even when exposed to a new variant or vaccine.

“[Immune imprinting] could be a problem if the person was unable to mount a useful immune response against a new variant,” Dr. Stanley Perlman, an immunologist and microbiologist at the University of Iowa, told The Epoch Times. He was not involved in the study.

While that did not occur in this study, most of the antibodies made following vaccination targeted the original COVID-19 variant and not XBB.1.5.

MOSCOW, March 25. /TASS/. Russia strongly condemns the March 21 terrorist attack in Afghanistan, which claimed the lives of dozens of innocent citizens and expresses its condolences to the families of the victims, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said in a commentary.

"We strongly condemn the barbaric terrorist attack committed on March 21 by an extremist suicide bomber at the entrance to a bank in Kandahar. This attack, which claimed the lives of several dozen innocent people,was distinguished by extreme cynicism, as it was carried out during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. It was aimed at destabilizing the situation in the spiritual capital of Afghanistan," Zakharova said.

She expressed "deep condolences to the families of the victims" and wished "a speedy recovery to the injured."

"We hope that the Afghan authorities will be able to track down and bring to justice the organizers of the terrorist attack in Kandahar," Zakharova concluded.

On March 21, an explosion took place at an office of New Kabul Bank in the city of Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. As the TOLOnews TV channel reported, the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. The Iranian news agency Tasnim quoted local sources as saying that at least 19 people died and more than 20 others were injured. According to the Al Jazeera channel, the Islamic State (terrorist group banned in Russia) claimed responsibility.

W. Brian Keegan, chief engineer of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, dies

W. Brian Keegan, a chief engineer at NASA, died of cardiac arrest March 12 at Keswick Multi-Care Center in Baltimore. He was 83.

William Brian Keegan was born in the Irvington neighborhood of West Baltimore to William and Madellyne Keegan. Mr. Keegan’s father was an engineer with Westinghouse, and his mother was an administrative staffer for a surgical practice.

Although Mr. Keegan spent most of his youth living in Parkville, he briefly lived in Biloxi, Mississippi, while his father worked as an aircraft mechanic for the Navy in the mid-1940s.

In 1958, he graduated from Loyola Blakefield in Towson before earning a degree in physics at Loyola College, now Loyola University Maryland, in 1962.

Mr. Keegan met his wife, Charlotte, at a church event at a bowling alley. They married in 1962 and raised their family of three children in the Catonsville and Ellicott City areas.

The family took annual trips to Bethany Beach in Delaware and held Christmas parties that continued after their children married and grandchildren came onto the scene.

“My dad was an example of how you can be a strong person and a strong leader without sacrificing compassion and kindness,” said his son Kevin Keegan. “He taught me how to be a good person and a good husband and father, and quite honestly there are moments at work when I hear his voice and words coming from my own mouth.”

In 1966, he began his career at NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center as a structural engineer. He would eventually work his way up to chief engineer.

In 1986, he was selected as the deputy director of flight assurance at Goddard. In 1994, he became the deputy director of engineering. He then was Goddard’s director of applied engineering and technology from 1997 until his appointment as chief engineer in 2000.

Mr. Keegan resigned from NASA in March 2002.

“Brian was very well regarded and held in high esteem, and had such a lasting impact on Goddard Space Flight Center,” said Lee Niemeyer, a colleague at NASA. “He was sharp, mission-oriented, fair and would push the organization to always be better.”

He was also a mentor to other engineers. Mr. Keegan would mentor his neighbor’s child, Pragnesh Shah, during a critical time in his career, Mr. Shah said.

Mr. Keegan’s advice was to be proficient in the people side of the business as well as the technical side, Mr. Shah said.

“I was in a career transition and called to seek his advice. He quickly responded to schedule a phone call,” said Mr. Shah, a former mechanical engineer at Goddard. “Mr. Keegan’s sage advice regarding the ‘people side’ often rang through as at the end of the day organizations and businesses are driven by people, no matter what the industry, even if rockets are not involved.”

Mr. Keegan enjoyed traveling and visited six of the seven continents. For his 50th wedding anniversary, he went with his wife, children and grandchildren to Hawaii in 2012.

Months after the anniversary trip, his wife was diagnosed with leukemia, and she would die later that year. Mr. Keegan eventually met his partner Melissa Fulton, and they moved to The Carrollton in the Oakenshawe neighborhood of Baltimore.

They would take many many cruises, including on the Mekong River in Vietnam in 2022 and on the Nile in Africa last year.

In addition to his partner Melissa Fulton, Mr. Keegan is survived by his sons, Stephen, of Geneva, Illinois, and Kevin, of Lutherville; daughter Kerry Keegan Naunton, of Nottingham; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A memorial was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on March 18.

"He has been called the father of modern spaceflight, but we called him Dad, Granpa, and Uncle George.

"He was a quiet man, brilliant, humble, and very private. The world will be so emptier without him.

"He had hundreds of friends and associates from all over the world who will miss him.

"His long life was notable for accomplishments as a pilot, engineer, manager, educated, and father."

Abbey was a US Naval Academy graduate who served in the Air Force before starting his career at Nasa in 1964.

He was a technical assistant in the Apollo Spacecraft Program, which prepared and landed the first men on the Moon from 1968 to 1972.

Following the Apollo 1 accident in 1967, which saw the cabin catch fire during prelaunch testing and kill the entire crew onboard, Abbey became a leading developer and implemented critical safety modifications required for future Apollo flights.

He later became the center director’s technical assistant.

As Nasa prepared for the space shuttle's launch, Abbey was named director of Flight Operations and responsible for astronaut training, development, and mission operations support.

Abbey was also responsible for selecting shuttle astronauts, which led to the first female and minority space flyers in 1978.

As director of the Johnson Space Center, he was critical to the Nasa Shuttle-Mir Program, providing crucial oversight, management, and guidance in the first phase of the International Space Station.

BREA, Calif. (KABC) - A big rig crashed and overturned onto the opposite side of the 57 Freeway, reportedly colliding into several cars in the Brea area Monday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic log, the incident happened around 8 a.m. at Imperial Highway.

The big rig was going northbound when it crashed into the freeway's center divider, overturned and caught fire on southbound lanes.

Up to five vehicles were hit in the process, according to the CHP traffic log.

AIR7 HD was over the scene where the southbound side of the freeway was completely shut down. An estimated reopening time was not available.

Dyson will spend six months aboard the station as an Expedition 70 and 71 flight engineer, returning to Earth in September with Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub of Roscosmos, who will complete a year-long mission on the laboratory.

Novitskiy and Vasilevskaya will be aboard the station for 12 days, providing the ride home for O’Hara on Saturday, April 6, aboard Soyuz MS-24 for a parachute-assisted landing on steppe of Kazakhstan. O’Hara will have spent 204 days in space when she returns.

Hubble Sees New Star Proclaiming Presence with Cosmic Lightshow

Jets emerge from the cocoon of a newly forming star to blast across space, slicing through the gas and dust of a shining nebula in this new image from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

FS Tau is a multi-star system made up of FS Tau A, the bright star-like object near the middle of the image, and FS Tau B (Haro 6-5B), the bright object to the far right obscured by a dark, vertical lane of dust. The young objects are surrounded by gently illuminated gas and dust of this stellar nursery. The system is only about 2.8 million years old, very young for a star system. Our Sun, by contrast, is about 4.6 billion years old.

FS Tau B is a newly forming star, or protostar, surrounded by a protoplanetary disk, a pancake-shaped collection of dust and gas leftover from the formation of the star that will eventually coalesce into planets. The thick dust lane, seen nearly edge-on, separates what are thought to be the illuminated surfaces of the flared disk.

FS Tau B is likely in the process of becoming a T Tauri star, a type of young variable star that hasn’t begun nuclear fusion yet but is beginning to evolve into a hydrogen-fueled star similar to our Sun. Protostars shine with the heat energy released as the gas clouds from which they are forming collapse, and from the accretion of material from nearby gas and dust. Variable stars are a class of star whose brightness changes noticeably over time.

FS Tau A is itself a T Tauri binary system, consisting of two stars orbiting each other.

Protostars are known to eject fast-moving, column-like streams of energized material called jets, and FS Tau B provides a striking example of this phenomenon. The protostar is the source of an unusual asymmetric, double-sided jet, visible here in blue. Its asymmetrical structure may result from the difference in the rates at which mass is being expelled from the object.

FS Tau B is also classified as a Herbig-Haro object. Herbig–Haro objects form when jets of ionized gas ejected by a young star collide with nearby clouds of gas and dust at high speeds, creating bright patches of nebulosity.

FS Tau is part of the Taurus-Auriga region, a collection of dark molecular clouds that are home to numerous newly forming and young stars, roughly 450 light-years away in the constellations of Taurus and Auriga. Hubble has previously observed this region, whose star-forming activity makes it a compelling target for astronomers. Hubble took these observations as part of an investigation of edge-on dust disks around young stellar objects.

Hubble Views a Galaxy Under Pressure

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image shows LEDA 42160, a galaxy about 52 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. The dwarf galaxy is one of many forcing its way through the comparatively dense gas in the massive Virgo cluster of galaxies. The pressure exerted by this intergalactic gas, known as ram pressure, has dramatic effects on star formation in LEDA 42160.

The gas and dust that permeates space exerts pressure on a galaxy as it moves. This resistance, called ram pressure, can strip a galaxy of its star-forming gas and dust, reducing or even stopping the creation of new stars. However, ram pressure can also compress gas in the galaxy, which can boost star formation.

The Hubble data used to create this image of LEDA 42160 is part of a project that studied dwarf galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping that are part of large galaxy clusters, like the Virgo cluster. Studies show that ram pressure stripping can initially cause new stars to form in larger galaxies. The researchers wanted to see if the same holds true for smaller galaxies, like LEDA 42160. The bright patches on LEDA 42160’s lower-right flank may be star-forming regions spurred on by ram pressure stripping. Hubble’s observations of LEDA 42160 will help astronomers determine the processes that created the features we see in this small galaxy.

UK Space Agency to expand with four new bases

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) is opening four new bases across the UK including a new headquarters.

The main centre will be at Harwell Science Campus in Oxfordshire from June.

Regional bases will also open this year in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Leicester, while existing offices in London and Swindon will be retained.

UKSA said the "transformational" expansion would enhance links with the private sector and boost recruitment.

Chief executive Dr Paul Bate said: "This will place the UK Space Agency at the heart of the space sector we serve, boosting growth.

"We have seen a significant rise in space organisations across the UK and it's crucial we nurture their skills and expertise."

The new premises at William Morgan House in Cardiff and Space Park Leicester will open in April, with the office at Queen Elizabeth House in Edinburgh following in the summer.

Space minister Andrew Griffith said more than 100 organisations were already based at Harwell's Space Cluster, making it the ideal location for the new headquarters.

He said the expansion would "strengthen the UK's science superpower ambitions".

The UK space sector is worth more than £17.5bn per year and employs more than 45,000 people, according to UKSA.

The agency has recently announced plans to fly a team of British astronauts on a commercially-sponsored mission, potentially to the International Space Station.

A number of structural themes have been driving US asset markets higher, including artificial intelligence, GLP-1, cloud, and biotech, as well as the prospect of a pivot in the Federal Reserve's interest rate hiking cycle if inflation does not reignite. Some Wall Street strategists, like BofA's Savita Subramanian, have hiked their year-end S&P price targets. However, her colleague, Michael Hartnett, has been countering the bull narrative that "it's only a small bubble, plus this time is different" in various notes (read: here, here, here, and here).

Given that some Wall Street strategists are split on the question, "1995 or 1999?" - one sell-side indicator has piqued our attention and could be an ominous sign that insiders see trouble ahead in the bull market.

According to Verity LLC, which tracks insider trades, the ratio of corporate insider selling to insider buying has surged to the highest level since the first quarter of 2021.

Peter Thiel, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg are some of the top corporate insiders dumping shares this quarter. They have sold hundreds of millions of dollars in shares as the AI bubble and Fed pivot narratives propelled the Nasdaq to new record highs.

The surge in insider selling is an ominous sign the bull market could be nearing a resistance level, Charles Elson, a legal veteran and chair of corporate governance at the University of Delaware, told the Financial Times.

"If they think that we're at the top and so they're getting out, that's a rather stark signal to everyone else," Elson said.

Ben Silverman, Verity's vice president of research, warned:

"We do view [corporate insider share sales] as a negative data point that investors should be aware of."

Silverman noted that the selling appears to be concentrated in the technology sector specifically, "We are also seeing a number of the big [company] names in this space with insider selling that is not typical."

"Clearly there's an appetite for liquidity generation right now," he said, adding, "Some of that is some pent-up demand following relatively quiet insider selling in 2022 and 2023, and certainly one impetus is [stock] market performance."

Boeing has announced that three of its top executives, including CEO Dave Calhoun, are stepping down amidst continued turmoil over the safety of its passenger jets.

The aerospace giant, which has been at the center of an escalating scandal since a serious incident involving a Boeing 737 Max plane, made the announcement on Monday.

The Gateway Pundit previously reported that Alaska flight 1282, a Boeing 737-9 MAX bound for Ontario, California, departed Portland, Oregon, just after 5 pm Pacific time earlier this year when a deactivated emergency door used as a regular cabin window blew out at 16,000 feet. Six crew members and 171 passengers were aboard the jet.

Dave Calhoun, who has served as President and CEO, will be stepping down at the end of 2024 but will remain at the helm through the year.

“As you all know, the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 accident was a watershed moment for Boeing,” Calhoun wrote to employees on Monday, per CNBC.

“We must continue to respond to this accident with humility and complete transparency. We also must inculcate a total commitment to safety and quality at every level of our company.

“The eyes of the world are on us, and I know we will come through this moment a better company, building on all the learnings we accumulated as we worked together to rebuild Boeing over the last number of years,” he wrote.

Alongside him, Stan Deal, the CEO and president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and Chairman Larry Kellner, who has opted not to seek reelection at the next shareholders’ meeting, are also departing.

And Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, is leaving the company effective immediately. Moving into his job is Stephanie Pope, who recently became Boeing’s Chief Operating Officer after previously running Boeing Global Services.

The departures come as airlines and regulators have been increasing calls for major changes at the company after a host of quality and manufacturing flaws on Boeing planes. Scrutiny intensified after a Jan. 5 accident, when a door plug blew out of a nearly new Boeing 737 Max 9, minutes into an Alaska Airlines flight.

Last week, airline CEOs started scheduling meetings with Boeing directors to voice their displeasure at the lack of manufacturing quality controls and lower than expected production of 737 Max planes. The meetings were to include Kellner and one or more other board members.

Calhoun for months has promised investors, airline customers and the general public that Boeing will get its myriad quality struggles under control.

As readers here are very aware, I am exceptionally frustrated with the willful blindness that permeates most of our Republican representatives. This is a big problem, and their willful blindness creates an outcome where the corrupt status quo continues despite grand pontifications and sternly worded letters intended to satiate the victims – We The People'.

The current status is as if the politicians are afraid of the IC-assisted bureaucrats within it. This reality creates the frustration that most people feel, yet few can accurately identify. However, if we can get a few politicians to accurately identify and target some very specific and corrupt people within the deep state, then we begin a process where the weeds of corruption begin getting pulled out by their roots.

Chairman Pete Sessions (TX-CD17) appears to have taken the first step in what could be a very lengthy process of sunlight.Chairman Sessions has sent a preservation letter to Georgetown University School of Law, identifying a couple of people at the root of the problem, Rosa Brooks and Mary McCord-. {SEE HERE}

As the acting assistant attorney general for the National Security Division, McCord worked with another Obama holdover, acting Attorney General Sally Q. Yates, worked together to kneecap National Security Advisor Michael T. Flynn.

The subcommittee chairman quoted McCord in the letter from an interview she gave to NBC News, in its Jan. 14 web article, “Fears grow that Trump will use the military in ‘dictatorial ways’ if he returns to the White House.”

McCord told NBC: “We’re already starting to put together a team to think through the most damaging types of things that he [Trump] might do so that we’re ready to bring lawsuits if we have to.”

The congressman then made a request:

At least 19 reported killed as Israeli forces fire on Gaza aid seekers

Authorities in Gaza said 23 people were also injured while waiting for bags of flour and aid near Kuwait Roundabout.

It said that the Israeli army and tanks opened fire with machine guns “towards the hungry people who were waiting for bags of flour and aid in a place far from posing any danger to the occupation”.

Mahmud Basal, the spokesman for the Civil Defence Department in Gaza, said there had been “heavy shooting at civilians” and victims had been transported to a nearby Ahli Arab Hospital.

Learning from Ashleigh Banfield's Landon Lecture of April 2003

Early in 2003, Ashleigh Banfield was a star in the making. A rising journalist at MSNBC, she covered the opening stages of the Iraq War. Before that, she’d made a name for herself covering the 9/11 attacks and their aftermath. Smart, pretty, highly skilled, she was heading nowhere but up. Until she gave an honest lecture on her experiences in Iraq and the Middle East on April 24, 2003.

I’ve written before about Banfield’s honest and heartfelt critique of Iraq war coverage in the U.S. mainstream media, which won her no friends at NBC News. In fact, the NBC brass sidelined and essentially exiled her. I recently reread her Landon Lecture at Kansas State University and realized NBC wasn’t just angry about her critique of mainstream media war coverage: they were likely even more incensed at how she humanized and empathized with Palestinians and other Middle Eastern peoples and groups, including organizations like Hezbollah.

Here’s some of what she had to say back then in 2003:

But it’s interesting to be able to cover this [Israel and Palestine]. There’s nothing in the world like being able to cross a green line whenever you want and speak to both sides of a conflict. I can’t tell you how horrible and wonderful it is at the same time in the West Bank and Gaza and Israel. There are very few people in this world who can march right across guarded check points, closed military zones, and talk to Palestinians in the same day that they almost embedded with Israeli troops, and that’s something that we get to do on a regular basis.

And I just wish that the leadership of all these different entities, ours included, could do the same thing, because they would have an eye opening experience, horrible and wonderful, all at the same time, and it would give a lot of insight as to how messages are heard and how you can negotiate. Because you cannot negotiate when someone can’t hear you or refuses to hear you or can’t even understand your language, and that’s clearly what’s happening in a lot of places in the world right now, the West Bank, Gaza and Israel, not the least of which there’s very little listening and understanding going on. Our language is entirely different than theirs, and I don’t just mean the words. When you hear the word Hezbollah you probably think evil, danger, terror right away. If I could just see a show of hands. Who thinks that Hezbollah is a bad word? Show of hands. Usually connotes fear, terror, some kind of suicide bombing. If you live in the Arab world, Hezbollah means Shriner. Hezbollah means charity, Hezbollah means hospitals, Hezbollah means welfare and jobs.

These are not the same organizations we’re dealing with. How can you negotiate when you’ re talking about two entirely different meanings? And until we understand – we don’t have to like Hizbullah, we don’t have to like their militancy, we don’t have to like what they do on the side, but we have to understand that they like it, that they like the good things about Hizbullah, and that you can’t just paint it with a blanket statement that it’s a terrorist organization, because even when it comes to the militancy these people believe that militancy is simply freedom fighting and resistance. You can’t argue with that. You can try to negotiate, but you can’t say it’s wrong flat out.

And that’s some of the problems we have in dealing in this war in terror. As a journalist I’m often ostracized just for saying these messages, just for going on television and saying, “Here’s what the leaders of Hezbullah are telling me and here’s what the Lebanese are telling me and here’s what the Syrians have said about Hezbullah. Here’s what they have to say about the Golan Heights.” Like it or lump it, don’t shoot the messenger, but invariably the messenger gets shot.

LONDON (AP) — A London court is due to rule whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange gets one final appeal in England to challenge extradition to the United States on espionage charges.

Two judges are scheduled to issue a judgment Tuesday morning in the High Court that could put an end to Assange's long legal saga — or extend it further.

If he fails in winning the right to appeal, his legal team fears he could be swiftly sent to the U.S. to face charges, though they’re likely to ask the European Court of Human Rights to block any transfer.

Assange, 52, has been indicted on 17 espionage charges and one charge of computer misuse over his website’s publication of a trove of classified U.S. documents almost 15 years ago. American prosecutors allege that Assange encouraged and helped U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning steal diplomatic cables and military files that WikiLeaks published.

During a two-day hearing last month, Assange’s lawyers argued that he was a secrecy-busting journalist who exposed U.S. military wrongdoing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sending him to the United States, they said, would expose him to a politically motivated prosecution and risk a “flagrant denial of justice.”

The U.S. government said that Assange's actions went way beyond those of a journalist gathering information and put lives at risk in his bid to solicit, steal and indiscriminately publish classified government documents.

The Australian computer expert has been held in a British high-security prison for the past five years.

Assange’s family and supporters say his physical and mental health have suffered during more than a decade of legal battles, including taking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London from 2012 until 2019.

“Julian is a political prisoner and he has to be released,” said Stella Assange, who married the WikiLeaks founder in prison in 2022.

Assange’s lawyers say that he could face up to 175 years in prison if convicted, though American authorities have said the sentence is likely to be much shorter.

For the third time in the last five days, Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, has been targeted by a Russian hypersonic missile attack.

1:29 PM PT Law enforcement sources tell TMZ this case is being handled out of the Southern District of New York. Reports say this appears to be tied to sex trafficking allegations which have been levied against Diddy in recent months from different plaintiffs.

FOX11 has posted video that appears to show several individuals in handcuffs near the property - and a couple of them appear to be Diddy's sons, Justin and King Combs.

TMZ has obtained additional footage that shows federal agents rolling up to Diddy's via water. The video shows armed agents standing on a boat, and they too appear to be armed.

Diddy is in the crosshairs of law enforcement on both coasts of America - as federal agents have descended on his Beverly Hills home.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ that agents for Homeland Security are in the middle of raiding Diddy's properties.

There are helicopters overhead and local law enforcement is also present, although we're told Homeland Security is the lead agency.

There are law enforcement walking through the house with guns drawn and there are people being questioned in the front of the house. We do not know if Diddy is present.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ his home on the East Coast is also being raided … we're told the home is in Miami.

As you know, there have been multiple allegations in several civil suits against Diddy, including human trafficking, all of which he has denied.

CONCORD – A Keene couple has been charged in connection with their production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), U.S. Attorney Jane E. Young announces.

Paul Baird, 43, of Keene and Krystal Baird, 38, of Keene were charged by complaint for the production of child pornography. Paul Baird and Krystal Baird appeared in federal court today.

According to the charging documents, as early as November 2023, Paul Baird was observed on a dark web chat site dedicated to CSAM of girls from four to fourteen years old. On March 7, 2024, Paul Baird posted links to three CSAM images to the website. A search of Paul Baird and his residence in Keene, New Hampshire earlier today led to the arrests of Paul and Krystal Baird for the production of child sexual abuse material.

The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has sanctioned a Chinese company for using hacks to target critical American infrastructure.

On Monday, the United States sanctioned Wuhan Xiaoruizhi Science and Technology Company, Limited, a Ministry of State Security front company based in Wuhan, China, that has served as cover for multiple malicious cyber operations.

The Department of Justice also unsealed indictments of Zhao Guangzong and Ni Gaobin, two Chinese nationals affiliated with Wuhan XRZ, and five others, for their roles in “malicious cyber operations targeting U.S. entities that operate within U.S. critical infrastructure sectors, directly endangering U.S. national security,” the Treasury Department said in a press release.

The Justice Department alleged that the defendants, “conducted global campaigns of computer hacking targeting political dissidents and perceived supporters located inside and outside of China, government and political officials, candidates and campaign personnel in the United States and elsewhere and American companies.”

To do this, The DOJ says the defendants sent more than 10,000 malicious emails to targets that often “appeared to be from prominent news outlets or journalists and appeared to contain legitimate news articles.”

“The malicious emails contained hidden tracking links, such that if the recipient simply opened the email, information about the recipient, including the recipient’s location, internet protocol (IP) addresses, network schematics and specific devices used to access the pertinent email accounts, was transmitted to a server controlled by the defendants and those working with them. The defendants and others in the APT31 Group then used this information to enable more direct and sophisticated targeted hacking, such as compromising the recipients’ home routers and other electronic devices.”

“The targeted U.S. government officials included individuals working in the White House, at the Departments of Justice, Commerce, Treasury and State, and U.S. Senators and Representatives of both political parties. The defendants and others in the APT31 Group targeted these individuals at both professional and personal email addresses. Additionally in some cases, the defendants also targeted victims’ spouses, including the spouses of a high-ranking Department of Justice official, high-ranking White House officials and multiple United States Senators. Targets also included election campaign staff from both major U.S. political parties in advance of the 2020 election.”

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement, “The Justice Department will not tolerate efforts by the Chinese government to intimidate Americans who serve the public, silence the dissidents who are protected by American laws, or steal from American businesses.”

“This case serves as a reminder of the ends to which the Chinese government is willing to go to target and intimidate its critics, including launching malicious cyber operations aimed at threatening the national security of the United States and our allies,” Garland continued.

“The United States is focused on both disrupting the dangerous and irresponsible actions of malicious cyber actors, as well as protecting our citizens and our critical infrastructure,” said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson.

Nelson added, “Through our whole-of-government approach and in close coordination with our British partners, Treasury will continue to leverage our tools to expose these networks and protect against these threats.”
