(Bloomberg) - Markus Jooste, former chief executive officer of scandal-ridden retailer Steinhoff International Holdings NV, has died at 63.

His death comes just one day after South Africa’s financial regulator levied a 475 million rand ($25 million) fine against him for making and publishing false, misleading or deceptive statements about the company. That was in addition to a 20 million rand previously levied by the regulator for insider trading.

The police statement said the cause of death was a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Lawmakers cut $1 billion from Space Force’s 2024 budget request

The House and Senate Appropriations Committees early on March 21 unveiled a long-awaited fiscal year 2024 compromise spending package for government agencies, including $825 billion for the Defense Department.

The House and Senate are expected to vote on the measure March 22 to avert a partial government shutdown. The compromise bill was delivered almost halfway through the 2024 fiscal year that began in October.

The $825 billion defense spending bill is less than the $842 billion the Biden administration requested. The U.S. Space Force is getting approximately $29 billion — or about $1 billion less than the $30 billion request.

Appropriators reduced the Space Force’s procurement request from $4.6 billion to $4 billion, and the RDT&E account (for research, development, testing and engineering) from $19 billion to $18.6 billion.

However, compared to the enacted fiscal year 2023 budget that Congress passed in December 2022 — appropriating $26.3 billion for the Space Force — the fiscal year 2024 appropriation represents a roughly $2.7 billion increase.

The 2024 funding for the Space Force reflects recommendations made by the Senate Appropriations Committee in its markup of the defense bill last summer.

While compromise 2024 bill was less than DoD requests, it boosts some space launch accounts:

It cuts $45 million from the $2 billion budget for National Security Space Launch services but adds $80 million to the NSSL research and development account.

It increases funding for the Tactically Responsive Space program from $30 million to $50 million.

A big winner in the 2024 defense bill is the Defense Innovation Unit, an organization established in 2015 in Silicon Valley to serve as a bridge between the Department of Defense and the commercial tech sector.

DIU gets an increase of $842 million in the 2024 budget. The agency identifies promising technologies with potential military applications and streamlines the often-bureaucratic acquisition process. Several DIU projects have focused on space technologies including space launch, on-orbit services and satellite communications.

Appropriators said the additional funding is justified given the importance of DIU in bringing innovation into the Defense Department.

It is understood that the King – who is also currently undergoing cancer treatment himself – and the Queen have both been informed of the news.

Mass shooting in Moscow mall: LIVE UPDATES

A large mall in Moscow was the scene of a mass shooting and has been set on fire with many casualties reported

Crocus City, a large mall and music venue just northwest of the Russian capital, came under attack by unknown assailants late on Friday. At least three individuals armed with assault rifles attacked visitors, as well as targeted a concert hall at the mall, setting it on fire.

The White House has condemned the attack on the mall, describing it as a “terrible” incident. “The images are just horrible and just hard to watch,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. The spokesman also insisted the US possessed no intelligence on the attack, nor does it believe it is somehow linked to Ukraine.

A new explosion has been reported from the burning mall. An RT correspondent from the scene, however, has not corroborated such claims.

The Chairmen of the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees, Jim Jordan (R-OH) and James Comer (R-KY) say that a whistleblower has brought them information that 'seems to corroborate our concerns' that the CIA directly interfered with DOJ and IRS investigations of Hunter Biden.

According to the whistleblower, the CIA "intervened in the investigation of Hunter biden to prevent the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) from interviewing a witness," the letter, addressed to CIA Director William Burns, reads.

Specifically, the Committees were concerned at how "the DOJ deviated from its standard processes to afford preferential treatment to Hunter Biden," which they learned "after two brave whistleblowers testified to Congress" that the Justice Department had done just that.

"DOJ officials restricted what investigative steps the investigators could pursue, tipped off Hunter Biden’s attorneys about investigative steps, and even prevented investigators from conducting witness interviews. The whistleblowers’ testimony about the preferential treatment provided to Hunter Biden has been corroborated by testimony from other witnesses and documents the Committees have received."

The new whistleblower says that in August 2021, the IRS wanted to interview Hunter Biden associate Patrick Kevin Morris - and that "the CIA intervened to stop the interview."

"Two DOJ officials were allegedly summoned to CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia for a briefing regarding Mr. Morris," at which "it was communicated that Mr. Morris could not be a witness during the investigation."

The Committees have asked the CIA to explain the alleged intervention - for which the Chairman have requested "all documents and communications" regarding the DOJ and/or IRS investigations of Hunter Biden, as well as "referring or relating to Patrick Kevin Morris."

Major terrorist attack at Moscow concert hall: What we know so far

Gunmen have killed and injured scores of people attending a concert near the Russian capital

Russia suffered one of the worst terrorist attacks in its modern history on Friday. At least 40 people were killed and scores injured by a group of gunmen who stormed a large music venue just outside of Moscow.

Details are still emerging, but it appears that the attack was well prepared and designed to maximize casualties. Here is what is known so far.

A packed venue

The terrorists struck at Crocus City Hall, a concert venue located in Krasnogorsk, a settlement on the western outskirts of the Russian capital. It is part of a larger entertainment complex opened in 2009, which also includes a shopping mall and hotel.

The concerthall holds up to 7,500 peopleand was almost packed when the terrorists launched their assault. The popular rock band Picnic was set to perform.

Shooting spree

According to footage circulating online, somefive gunmen took part in the shooting. They appeared to be carrying automatic firearms and had other military gear.

They reportedly killed the security guards – who were unarmed – at the main entrance to the venue, and blocked it before continuing their rampage inside.

Large blaze follows

Once the terrorists reached the concert hall, they reportedly set chairs inside on fire. The blaze spread across the building and reached the roof before firefighters could start combating it. Helicopters were seen pouring large quantities of water on the building following the attack.

Dozens killed

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has put the preliminary death toll in the attack at 40, adding that around 100 people have been injured.

At least 70 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to attend to the wounded, according to officials.

A list of wounded released by the Moscow Region Health Ministry has more than 140 entries, some of which are yet to be identified by name. Dozens of victims were said to be in serious condition.

Five people on the list are children as young as seven, while an 11-year-old girl is also listed.

Fate of the perpetrators

Russian law enforcement did not report any arrests in the wake of the shooting. Commando units were dispatched to the scene, but it was not immediately clear whether they confronted the gunmen inside.

Unconfirmed media reports said that several Crocus employees had been detained.

Identity of the terrorists

No terrorist group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Senior Ukrainian official Mikhail Podoliak posted a video statement on social media shortly after the news broke. The aide to President Vladimir Zelensky distanced the Ukrainian government from the tragedy, claiming that Kiev does not resort to terrorism in its fight against Russia. (They admitted to terrorism on Russian soil multiple times)

Reactions from abroad

International organizations and foreign governments, including those that Russia considers unfriendly, have condemned the terrorist attack.

White House White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby, who was giving a daily briefing shortly after the incident, called the images from the scene “hard to watch,” adding: “Our thoughts obviously are going to be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack.”

Security alerts in March

Earlier this month, the US issued a warning to its citizens in Russia, urging them to avoid public places and mass gatherings. The embassy claimed that “extremists” had imminent plans for an attack in Moscow. Several other embassies followed suit, issuing similar alerts.

Kirby stressed that Washington had “no advanced knowledge” of Friday’s shooting. (How did they know there would be a terrorist attack. Did they give the info to Russia?)

Mike Benz: I just have to break this down in a video to make it perfectly plain and clear to people what’s happening with Hunter Biden and the CIA. Why was I saying a year and a half ago that the reason Hunter Biden is untouchable by the Justice Department is because he was part of a CIA operation. Multiple ones, actually.

You have to understand what’s going on here. Let me just give you a dozen data points on Hunter Biden CIA. The first thing is, Hunter was on the Chairman’s Advisory Board of the National Democratic Institute, the NDI. The NDI is the DNC wing of the National Endowment for Democracy, which is the top CIA cutout used in our tens of thousands of NGO swarms. NED ranks number one. It was created to be the NGO affiliate of the CIA. It was created to do overtly what the CIA was doing covertly and getting in trouble for doing in the 20th century, created under the Reagan administration in 1983. There’s something called the NDI for Democrats and the for Republicans, the CIA wing of the Republican Party. They both split spoils, basically on US foreign policy jobs that the CIA orchestrates.

You don’t get to be part of the chairman’s advisory committee of the NDI unless you are CIA-linked or CIA-vetted. It is a CIA. – NGOs, government-organized, non-governmental organizations. This is a CIA-organize a CIA-organized, non-CIA organization. It’s the CIA. He’s on the chairman’s advisory board of that. By the way, when he was at Burisma, who was the other person on the Barisma board from the US there was Cofer Black, who had spent 30 years in the CIA. Cofer Black was Mitt Romney’s Sherpa to the intelligence community during his presidential run in 2012. You know what? Mitt Romney is on the board of the IRI, who I just mentioned, the International Republican Institute, the CIA cut out counterpart to the NDI. Barisma was a CIA operation. Let me say this again. Burisma was a CIA operation. So was Naftagas. That’s the public and then, respectively, the private and public natural gas companies there. There were a couple of other private ones in addition to Burisma. But the CIA was trying to break down Gazprom and swing the gas market from Russia to NATO. They’ve been trying to do this for 16 friggin’ years.

US Intelligence Says It Knew ISIS-K Was Planning Terror Attack On Moscow

Update(1950ET): The initial reports that ISIS has claimed responsibility for the terror attack in Moscow appeared rumor at first, and has still been subject of widespread scrutiny and debate, however, US media and government officials are saying that the Islamic State (or ISIS-K) statement is authentic. "A branch of the Islamic State claimed responsibility on Friday for the attack in Moscow that killed at least 40 people and injured about 100 others, and U.S. officials confirmed the claim shortly afterward," The New York Times writes late in the day.

What's more is that US intelligence knew there was to be an imminent attack on Moscow: "The United States collected intelligence in March that Islamic State-Khorasan, known as ISIS-K, the branch of the group based in Afghanistan, had been planning an attack on Moscow, according to officials. ISIS members have been active in Russia, one U.S. official said," according to more from NYT.

The Kremlin had earlier in the day demanded answers of Washington explaining why the US Embassy in Moscow issued an alert earlier this month for all US nationals to avoid public venues and be extra vigilant. We previously reported on that early March embassy notification here. NY Times continues, citing US officials: "After a period of relative quiet, the Islamic State has been trying to increase its external attacks, according to U.S. counterterrorism officials. Most of those plots in Europe have been thwarted, prompting assessments that the group had diminished capabilities."

Hawks pushing for 'axis of evil' reunion tour

Lumping US adversaries into a single-headed monster is a paranoid delusion used as to fuel militarism

The head of Indo-Pacific Command, Admiral John Aquilino, recently warned members of the House Armed Services Committee about increasing cooperation among Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea and said, “We’re almost back to the axis of evil.”

There has been something of a revival of this discredited Bush-era idea in recent years, and it has become more common for members of Congress and now high-ranking military officers to describe the relationships between various authoritarian states using some version of George W. Bush’s ridiculous phrase.

While it is true that there has been some increased cooperation between these four governments, it is dangerous and misleading to suggest that they form anything resembling a close alliance or coalition. If the U.S. were to “act accordingly,” as Adm. Aquilino recommended, it would risk driving these states much closer together and creating the very axis that U.S. officials fear.

Aquilino’s phrasing is revealing. When he said, “we’re almost back to the axis of evil,” that seems to suggest that he thinks there was a real one that serves as a model for the current group. The first “axis of evil” that George W. Bush denounced in his 2002 State of the Union address was made up of three states — Iran, Iraq, and North Korea — that were united only by Washington’s hostility to them. Iran and Iraq had long been enemies and remained so at the time, and North Korea was added to the mix so that it wouldn’t be entirely fixated on predominantly Muslim countries. These states weren’t working together, and two of them were opposed to each other.

There was no axis then, and there still isn’t one now.

The purpose in tying together unrelated adversaries has always been to exaggerate the size of the threat to the United States to scare policymakers and the public into supporting more military spending and more overseas conflicts. If inflating the threat from any one adversary isn’t enough to instill sufficient fear, the invention of an axis that includes some or all adversaries around the globe can be very useful to hawks. Because it automatically calls to mind World War II and the fight against the Axis Powers, it also helps them to demonize the other states and smother domestic dissent. Supporters of hawkish policies in each region will then have an incentive to embrace the axis rhetoric and reinforce these views among their political allies.

Several current and former elected officials have referred to a new “axis of evil” in recent months. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) used the phrase last October and demonstrated its threat inflating potential: “It’s an emergency that we step up and deal with this axis of evil — China, Russia, Iran — because it’s an immediate threat to the United States. In many ways, the world is more endangered today than it has been in my lifetime.”

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley used it to burnish her hawkish credentials when she was running for president. Sens. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) have also indulged in the fearmongering.

The four states that hawks want to lump together as part of an axis today have some dealings with each other, but their security relationships are quite weak. None of them is formally allied to Russia, and Russia and China have no obligations to come to Iran’s aid. All four governments are run by intensely nationalistic leaders, and they nurse grievances over past humiliations and conflicts that make closer ties difficult to establish.

Former President Barack Obama privately met with President Biden on at least two occasions and expressed concern that he could lose the 2024 election, according to a report.

A new report from TIME Magazine claimed that Obama met with Biden last June to deliver a warning about his re-election chances. Obama allegedly advised Biden to become more aggressive and make the upcoming presidential race a referendum on Trump.

During a private lunch, Obama told Biden his campaign was unstable, persuading unhappy voters would be a challenge and defeating Trump would be more difficult than 2020, according to a Democrat briefed on the discussion.

While he believed at the time that Biden had taken his advice to heart, Obama allegedly saw little improvement over the next six months.

“This time, Obama’s message was more urgent. He expressed concern the re-election campaign was behind schedule in building out its field operations and bottlenecked by Biden’s insistence on relying upon an insular group of advisers clustered in the West Wing, according to the same Democratic insider,” TIME noted.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, the former Director of the National Counterterrorism Center said he became 'fearful' of aggressive tactics by members of the Democrat-led panel who tried to stop him speaking publicly about a narrative that didn't align with their final report.

Miller's bombshell claims follow a report by Republican Rep. Barry Loudermilk that reveals the committee withheld a transcript from an interview with a top White House official where he told Vice Chair Liz Cheney and other staffers that Trump did want to deploy troops.

Cheney did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether she or any other members of the Select Committee corresponded with witnesses in a way that could be interpreted as threatening.

Trump appointed Miller as the Pentagon chief in November 2020 after he fired Mark Esper amid attempts to overturn Joe Biden's presidential election victory.

He was only in the job for two months, but was thrust in front of the committee during their probe into the events that unfolded on the day the electoral college votes were certified.

Miller claims the members intimidated him, and warned they would repeatedly bring him in for 'hours' of additional testimony if he kept going on TV and defending the former president's actions.

At the time, Miller said, he did not have the 'resources to continue to battle' the committee and didn't want to face more depositions for speaking to media outlets about his experiences.

It was a Sean Hannity segment on June 6, 2022 featuring Miller and Trump national security official Kash Patel that seemed to 'hit a nerve,' according to the former DOD head.

'The two of us were on [the Fox News show] and the next day my lawyer got a call from the Jan. 6 staff director – I forgot exactly who it was – but basically saying, very legalistic: 'Well, if your client has additional information he wants to share, we'd be happy to have him re-interviewed,'' Miller recalled.

He continued: 'It was more that latent threat of: 'If you want to keep going on TV, we're gonna drag you in here again for additional hours of hearing testimony.' So that was the nature of that whole thing.'

'It was the latent threat of the government continuing to intrude into my life.'

Republican communications strategist Erica Knight told DailyMail.com: 'Knowing how other witnesses close to me were treated,it wouldn't surprise me if people in media were also threatened by the committee to stop discussing this issue.' ..

Mexico's president says he won't fight drug cartels on US orders, calls it a 'Mexico First' policy

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president said Friday he won’t fight Mexican drug cartels on U.S. orders, in the clearest explanation yet of his refusal to confront the gangs.

Over the years, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has laid out various justifications for his “hugs, not bullets” policy of avoiding clashes with the cartels. In the past he has said “you cannot fight violence with violence,” and on other occasions he has argued the government has to address “the causes” of drug cartel violence, ascribing them to poverty or a lack of opportunities.

But on Friday, while discussing his refusal to go after the cartels, he made it clear he viewed it as part of what he called a “Mexico First” policy.

“We are not going to act as policemen for any foreign government,” López Obrador said at his daily news briefing. “Mexico First. Our home comes first.”

López Obrador basically argued that drugs were a U.S. problem, not a Mexican one. He offered to help limit the flow of drugs into the United States, but only, he said, on humanitarian grounds.

“Of course we are going to cooperate in fighting drugs, above all because it has become a very sensitive, very sad humanitarian issue, because a lot of young people are dying in the United States because of fentanyl,” the president said. Over 70,000 Americans die annually because of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which are mainly made in Mexico from precursor chemicals smuggled in from China.

López Obrador's view — like many of his policies — harkens back to the 1970s, a period when many officials believed that Mexican cartels selling drugs to gringos was a U.S. issue, not a Mexican one.

“For decades, past administrations in Mexico have thought the war against drug cartels was basically a U.S. problem,” said security analyst David Saucedo, noting that Mexican domestic drug consumption, while growing — especially methamphetamines — is still at relatively low levels.

Here’s what happened when St. Michael visited Ireland

Continuing our series on the “Sword of St. Michael,” we will now examine various apparitions of St. Michael along the sacred line of seven monasteries that stretches from Ireland to Israel.

According to tradition (recorded by Irish monks in the manuscript Libellus de Fundacione Ecclesie Consecrati Petri), St. Patrick was having a hard time expelling the last demonic creatures from the land and needed some heavenly aid.

He was able to drive the beasts to the south-western edge of Ireland and as he stretched out his hand a great heavenly host of angels appeared, with St. Michael in the lead. This “High King of the Angels” (Adrigh na Aaingeal) was visible to St. Patrick standing on a pinnacle of rock out in the middle of the sea.

This particular skellig would later be named “Skellig Michael” by the monks who lived there.

After St. Michael cast out the last of the demons and serpents from Ireland he left his shield behind on the Great Skellig.

Later when the monastery was established on the island, the monks passed down a story regarding a regular visit from St. Michael to replenish their supply of wine for the celebration of Mass. Below is a retelling of the story by Giraldus Cambrensis, a royal clerk who traveled to Ireland in the 12th century.

In the southern part of Munster, in the neighborhood of Cork, there is an island with a church dedicated to St. Michael, famed for its orthodox sanctity from very ancient times. There is a stone outside the porch of this church, on the right hand, and partly fixed in the wall, with a hollow in its surface, which, every morning, through the merits of the saint to whom the church is dedicated, is filled with as much wine as will conveniently suffice for the service of the Masses on the day ensuing, according to the number of priests there who have to celebrate them.

With these two stories St. Michael is clearly painted as a protector from demonic attacks and an angelic guardian, ready to provide for whatever is lacking.

In Ireland there also grew a belief that St. Michael was the one who kept the Evil One at bay until the end of time. Then, when this world passes away, Michael will come with Christ to take up the just to Heaven. This belief is usually taken from St. Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians.

For the Lord himself shall come down from heaven with commandment, and with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God: and the dead who are in Christ, shall rise first. (1 Thessalonians 4:15)

It is no surprise that St. Michael has been a favorite saint of the Irish for many centuries and Irish monks took this affection wherever they went.

STRONG X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: The sun just produced a solar flare so strong, it took two sunspots to make it. The long-duration X1.1-class flare started on March 23rd around 0130 UT when both AR3615 and AR3615 erupted. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the double blast.

This is called a "sympathetic solar flare." Sympathetic flares are pairs of flares that occur almost simultaneously in widely-spaced sunspots, not by chance, but because of an unseen physical connection. Nearly-invisible magnetic loops in the sun's corona connect some sunspots, allowing explosive instabilities to travel from one to the other. Some sympathetic flares are so much alike, they are considered to be twins.

This X-class event lasted for more than 5 hours, plenty of time to lift a CME out of the sun's atmosphere. Confirmation awaits fresh data from SOHO coronagraphs; stay tuned.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday as further funding for the war-torn country remains in limbo amid divisions in Congress.

Zelensky hosted Graham in Kyiv, where the two discussed aid for Ukraine, the Ukrainian army’s needs and the Eastern European nation’s eventual integration into NATO, the Ukrainian leader wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Graham’s visit comes just weeks after he voted against a $95 billion defense and foreign aid package in the Senate. The bill included $60 billion for Ukraine, including $19.85 billion to restock U.S. military weapons provided from the Pentagon’s inventory and $13.8 billion to allow Ukraine to buy weapons and munitions from U.S. industry.

The South Carolina Republican is one of the most outspoken GOP advocates for supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia, which surprised and frustrated lawmakers on both sides of the aisle who believed he would help muster up GOP support for the bill.

Defending his vote last month, Graham pointed to his concerns about the border.

Zelensky reiterated his plea to the U.S. on Monday to continue sending aid in support of Ukraine.

“It is critical that our partners continue to provide military and technical assistance, such as air defense systems and missiles,” Zelensky wrote on X, adding later, “The continued support of Ukraine by international partners, particularly the United States, is now more important than ever in implementing plans to de-occupy our territories and protect our people.”

In a video of Zelensky’s remarks, the president told Graham he is thankful for Congress and the Biden administration’s support over the past two years, and he asked the lawmaker what he thinks about future support for the nation.

The people in the little town of Sheerness in Kent are on edge.

It's not the cost of energy bills or groceries that's unnerving them, nor is it apprehension over an influx of tourists in the upcoming summer months that they fear.

The people in the little town of Sheerness are on edge because of the SS Richard Montgomery shipwreck, a World War 2-era boat whose remains lay less than a mile away and could blow at any moment.

The ship has lain untouched since 1944 when it was wrecked on the Nore sandbank in the Thames Estuary.

The problem is not the wreck itself but what its cargo holds: about 1,400 tonnes of explosives that no one is quite sure what to do with — or if they'll get set off.

After 78 years underwater, the ship has become seriously corroded and there are concerns that its three masts — which can still be seen poking from beneath the waterline — could collapse and fall onto the explosives.

The experts say this might trigger a catastrophic blast that would set off a tsunami which could destroy everything in its wake.

The tsunami would send huge waves towards the Kent and Essex shorelines and even London.

In 2022, experts at Defence Research and Development Canada raised fear levels even higher when it assessed the ship's fragile state.

The vice president visited a family home in San Juan with Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Department of Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman and Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi.

Harris and Granholm promoted the implementation of rooftop solar panel electric systems on homes in the area. 'We expect that this Summer will be the Summer of solar, where we really see the quick implementation and installation of solar plus storage,' Granholm said.

Harris commented that she visited with the mother of a multigenerational family living in the home.

‘I was able to spend some time with her and like all the matriarchs of the families we know where the power base is, we’re talking about energy and solar, that’s where the power is right there,' she said.

Puerto Rico suffered catastrophic damage from the 2017 Hurricanes Irma and Maria as workers are still working on rebuilding the power grid. Residents on the island still experience rolling electricity blackouts.

Harris spoke about the importance of rooftop solar panels providing power for homes suffering the lack of electricity.

‘We are talking about people’s homes, not only in terms of a structure but the community and of course the island and what we all must understand should be a priority for restoring, not only the beauty but the infrastructure that then houses so much good and important work,’ she said during her speech.

The home Harris visited had a Puerto Rico flag draped from the roof, as she celebrated the green energy initiative as an important recovery milestone. Protesters also took to the streets ahead of Harris' arrival demanding statehood for the island territory and a ceasefire in the Israel war with Gaza. Demonstrators waved Puerto Rico and Gaza flags while holding signs protesting her visit and even set fire to American flags.

Three children killed in Moscow concert hall attack – hospital data

Some of those hospitalized are as young as seven, according to officials

Three children have diedas a result of a terrorist attack at Crocus City Hall outside Moscow on Friday night, according to hospital data posted on the Moscow Region’s Health Ministry website.

At least five children were among those hospitalized after the massacre, officials have said.

The venue was booked for a rock concert when the atrocity took place, with heavily armed gunmen breaking into the building and indiscriminately shooting visitors. They then reportedly set fire to the building.

The death toll stands at more than 60, although that number may rise, the Russian Investigative Committee told the media early on Saturday.

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko has said that of the roughly 115 people that have been hospitalized,at least five are children. Their ages range fromseven to 12, and two 12-year-olds are currently in serious condition. An11-year-old girl is in moderately seriouscondition with a gunshot wound, whileher mother was among those killed, local authorities reported. Her father and older sister survived unscathed.

Earlier, children’s ombudswoman Maria Lvova-Belova told broadcaster Rossiya 24 that a boy with a gunshot wound was among the children being treated.

The Crocus City complex, located in Krasnogorsk, just northwest of Moscow, includes sports and leisure facilities besides the concert venue where the attack took place. A number of other children were there that evening, visiting from nearby towns and taking part in competitions. All were evacuated unharmed, local media reported.

Several witnesses say there were multiple families with their children among the Friday night crowd in the building when the shooting began.

“People carried their children in their arms. No one knew where it was safe at the time, there was this incomprehensible feeling of what could meet us in the hall, or on the street,” lawmaker Ayder Metshin, who was there for the concert, told RT.

He added that he and other concertgoers had stayed low to the ground andexited at the back of the hall along with the musicians, before making their way out of the venue.

“There was a feeling of some kind of denial, I couldn’t believe that this was happening,” he said.

Everyone behind Moscow terror attack will be punished – Putin

Russian president has addressed the nation in the aftermath of the deadly attack at a concert hall outside Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday addressed the nation about the Crocus City Hall shooting, denouncing it as a “bloody and barbaric” terrorist attack and vowing to punish all involved. At least 115 people have been killed and over 120 wounded in Friday evening's massacre.

In his video address, thepresident declared a national day of mourning on Sunday, March 24, to commemorate the victims of the attack.

Putin expressed his gratitude to all first responders, to law enforcement, and to ordinary citizens, too, who helped the victims of the attack. At the same time, the president stressed another effort is underway, focused on the prevention of any further attacks.

”In Moscow and Moscow Region, in all regions of the country, additional anti-terrorism and anti-saboteur measures have been introduced,” he announced, adding: “The main thing now is to prevent those who are behind this bloodbath from committing a new crime.”

Vowing to punish all conspirators behind Friday night’s attack, Putin noted that, so far, 11 suspects, including four perpetrators who directly participated in the shooting spree, have been detained. The attackers were caught fleeing “towards Ukraine, where, according to preliminary data, a window to cross the border was prepared on the Ukrainian side,” he added.

“All perpetrators, organizers and masterminds behind this crime will get just and inevitable punishment. Whoever they are, whoever guides them. I repeat: we will identify and punish everyone who stands behind the terrorists, who prepared this atrocity, this attack on Russia, on our people,” the president stated.

Crocus City Hall, in the town of Krasnogorsk in Moscow’s western outskirts, was attacked by gunmen on Friday evening. Just before a concert by Russian rock band Picnic, when the venue, which has an estimated capacity of 7,500, was nearly full. The attackers, armed with assault rifles, breached the venue entrances, shooting patrons at point-blank range then setting the building on fire, before fleeing the scene.

Moscow attack terrorists planned to flee to Ukraine – FSB

Russia’s domestic security service has reported that four assailants were detained in Bryansk Region near the border

The terrorists who attacked Crocus City Hall in Moscow Region on Friday evening planned to flee to Ukraine, the FSB security service said in a statement on Saturday.

Four assailants were apprehended in Bryansk Region near the border, and are being transported to Moscow. According to the FSB,the perpetrators of the terrorist attack– which has left at least 115 people dead –had contacts on Ukrainian soil.

“After committing the crime, the perpetrators attempted to flee, driving in a car in the direction of the Russia-Ukraine border,” the authorities stated. However, “all four [suspected] terrorists” were detained within several hours.

Seven other people have been apprehended following the mass shooting, the security service said.The attack was meticulously planned, with a cache of weapons amassed beforehand, the statement added.

The investigation is ongoing, with the security service working to determine all circumstances surrounding the case.

The tragic events unfolded on Friday evening at Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, on the western outskirts of the Russian capital. The concert venue, with an estimated capacity of 7,500, was almost full when the terrorists struck.

After firing indiscriminately with assault rifles at the fleeing crowd of panicked visitors, the assailants then set fire to rows of chairs inside the concert hall. The blaze quickly engulfed much of the building, including its roof.

(I wonder if Kirby will insist the terrorists were not from Ukraine. Yeah they get plausible deniabillity. These people are disgusting.)

NASA astronaut Tracy C. Dyson, Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy, and spaceflight participant Marina Vasilevskaya of Belarus are safely in orbit on the Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft after launching at 8:36 a.m. EDT from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (5:36 p.m. Baikonur time).

The Soyuz will dock to the space station’s Prichal module about 11:09 a.m. Monday, March 25. About two hours after docking, hatches between the Soyuz and the station will open.

Nasa to send discs depicting ‘essence of humanity’ to the Moon

Sapphire discs etched with “the essence of humanity” will be sent to the Moon under Nasa’s Artemis programme to act as a repository of human knowledge.

The project, titled Sanctuary On The Moon, includes examples of mathematics, culture, palaeontology, art and science as well as the human genomes of a man and a woman.

The discs mimic the golden phonographs sent with the Voyager spacecraft, the first ships to leave the Solar System, which contained greetings in 55 different languages, messages from world leaders and even a human heartbeat.

The new discs include schematics for Nasa’s Saturn V rocket and lunar landing modules which took astronauts to the Moon in the Apollo mission, as well as paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and Vincent van Gogh, and The Declaration of Human Rights.

There are also celestial and terrestrial maps, as well as data on anatomy, astrophysics and particle physics, phases of the Moon and developments such as the combustion engine and flying machines.

“We are delighted to take Sanctuary to the Moon,” said Joel Kearns, Nasa’s deputy associate administrator for exploration in the agency’s Science Mission Directorate.

“We believe that this internationally curated repository of knowledge on the Moon will serve as an inspiration today and for many generations to come.”

The discs are the idea of Benoit Faiveley, a French engineer who has worked with a team of international scientists, researchers, designers and artists to choose what images to place on each disc.

Mr Faiveley himself appears on one of the discs dressed in an astronaut suit.

The discs, which will be placed in a durable aluminium capsule, will be delivered to the Moon’s surface using an automatic space probe under the Commercial Lunar Payload Services contract with Nasa.

Mr Faiveley said: “The only thing left over from ancient cultures are tangible objects, hieroglyphs, stones, scripts, paintings that lasted over centuries and millenniums.

“So we took a similar path.

“It will be a variegated portrait of our species engraved in micropixels. There are important examples from astrophysics, particle physics, astronomy and planetary science.

“We hope Sanctuary will constitute a ‘cosmic hello’ to our descendants or perhaps even visitors from elsewhere.

“The Sanctuary project is a message for the very long term. We want future explorers to step back in time and join us in our exploration of ourselves, our world and our epoch.”

There will be 24 discs in all, with one pixel for every Homo sapiens who has ever lived on the planet. As well as Space, other themes will include Life & Biology, Time & Age and Matter & Atoms.

Male and female genomes sequenced at the British Columbia Genome Sciences Centre in Vancouver will be placed on two separate discs.

The 24 discs are currently being engraved at the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission.

Adama Pam, chief archivist at Unesco, which has supported the project, said: “We have always supported new and ambitious ideas. Sanctuary on the Moon resonates with Unesco’s ongoing commitment to education, science, and culture, and our mission to share our knowledge of humanity’s intellectual and moral achievements.”
