More than two years after President Joe Biden pledged to build 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations throughout the United States only seven are operational across four states.
The Washington Post reported Friday on the sluggish pace the allocated $7.5 billion in infrastructure funds have been put to use.
The bulk of the funds, $5 billion, are to go toward building fast chargers along major interstates - what's being called the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure or NEVI program.
To satisfy the federal program's requirements, chargers must be built at least every 50 miles over major highway routes and be operational 97 percent of the time.
They also must take credit card payments and certain components must be made domestically.
Additionally, states must submit proposals to the Biden administration for approval, solicit bids for construction and then can award the funds.
So after the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was passed in November 2021, only seven charging stations are operational.
They are in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Hawaii and New York and offer 38 spots for cars to charge.
Twelve additional states have been awarded contracts for construction to begin, while another 17 states haven't even submitted proposals.
'I think a lot of people who are watching this are getting concerned about the timeline,' Alexander Laska, deputy director for transportation and innovation at the center-left think tank Third Way told The Post.
Nick Nigro, founder of Atlas Public Policy, told the newspape that some of the delays are to be expected.
'State transportation agencies are the recipients of the money,' he told The Post. 'Nearly all of them had no experience deploying electric vehicle charging stations before the law was enacted.'
'I expect it to go much faster in 2024,' Nigro added.
If Republicans take back full control of Congress and also the White House - some of these programs could see a backslide.
Biden's challenger, former President Donald Trump, has been openly antagonistic toward the Democrat's green agenda.
In mid-February at a campaign stop in the battleground state of Michigan, Trump said that Biden 'ordered a hit job on Michigan manufacturing' with mandates to move the American car industry away from gas guzzlers toward EVs.
And GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill also haven't been impresssed.
'We have significant concerns that under your efforts American taxpayer dollars are being woefully mismanaged,' read a letter sent to the Biden administration from a group of Republican representatives in February.
'The problems with these programs continue to grow — delays in the delivery of chargers, concerns from States about labor contracting requirements and minimum operating standards for chargers,' said the letter, which was signed by GOP Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, Jeff Duncan and Morgan Griffith.

Two high-speed military cargo ships are stuck in the Port of Baltimore following Tuesday morning's collapse of the 1.6-mile-long Francis Scott Key Bridge. The major US East Coast port has been paralyzed for several days as the bridge collapse prevents inbound and outbound vessel traffic along the harbor's channel.
Using the automatic identification system, or AIS, data that tracks commercial vessels, three bulk carriers, two general cargo ships, one vehicle carrier, one tanker, and four Ready Reserve Force vessels (RRF), along with the container ship Dali that struck the bridge, are trapped in the harbor, according to the shipping blog gCaptain.

He said the four ships being stuck is a “huge problem if a war starts [but] not much of a problem if the next few months are peaceful.”
“The big problem with that is two of the stuck ships are SL-7 rapid response ships,” he said, referring to the Antares and the Denebola. “SL-7s are the first to go if the balloon goes up because no other cargo ships have their speed,” he said.

Last week’s Crocus City Hall attack was organized anonymously via social media, according to officials
The chief suspects in last week's terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall outside Moscow have testified that their orders came from a mystery man who told them to flee to Ukraine afterwards, the Russian Investigative Committee announced on Friday.
Security services detained the four suspected perpetrators near the Ukrainian border last Saturday. The attack claimed 144 lives and left over 200 people hospitalized.
In their initial testimonies and during their subsequent interrogations, the suspects said the attacks were prepared in coordination with “a man who introduced himself to them under a pseudonym,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.He communicated with them by voice messages sent over Telegram, it added.
“On the instructions of the coordinator, after committing the crime, the terrorists drove in a car towards theRussian-Ukrainian border to subsequently cross it and arrive in Kiev to receive the promised reward,” the law enforcement agency said.
The Investigative Committee has said it is continuing to “verify the involvement of representatives of Ukrainian special services in organizing and financing the terrorist attack.”
Russian special forces intercepted the four suspected perpetrators last Saturday, en route to the Ukrainian border. They were identified as nationals of Tajikistan and initially described by officials as “radical Islamists.”
The terrorist group Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K) has claimed responsibility for the massacre. The US and EU have insisted that ISIS-K was the sole culprit and that Ukraine was in no way involved.
Moscow, however, remains skeptical. President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and the heads of theFSB and the Investigative Committee have all claimed that multiple clues point to Kiev’s involvement. Lavrov described the West’s insistence on Ukraine’s innocence as suspicious in itself.
On Thursday, the Investigative Committee revealed that the four suspects hadreceived “significant sums of money” from Ukraine, in the form of cryptocurrency. The funds were then used to prepare the attack on Crocus City Hall, the agency said.

Nearly 200 people who visited Jeffrey Epstein's 'pedo' island left a trail of mobile device data which links them to homes and offices in the US around the world, a new analysis reveals.
The analysis exposes the movements of visitors to the island from 2016 to Epstein's final arrest in 2019, years after his conviction in 2008 for procuring a child for prostitution.
The location data was pinged from their mobile devices to platforms which facilitate targeted advertising. This information was then compiled by Near Intelligence, a controversial location data broker.The data analyzed by Wired is believed to include both visitors to the island and victims of the abuse.
Some of the devices were linked to luxury properties in Michigan, Florida and Martha's Vineyard. Others are said to have been traced back to low-income areas where Epstein's victims are known to have lived and attended school.
One device reportedly pinged coordinates from a sidewalk across the street from the Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
Near Intelligence obtained the data from advertising exchanges, which are online platforms that facilitate the buying and selling of ads on the internet. The information can include location data which allows analysts to track the movements of devices.

NASA to Launch Sounding Rockets into Moon’s Shadow During Solar Eclipse
NASA will launch three sounding rockets during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, to study how Earth’s upper atmosphere is affected when sunlight momentarily dims over a portion of the planet.
The Atmospheric Perturbations around Eclipse Path (APEP) sounding rockets will launch from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia to study the disturbances in the ionosphere created when the Moon eclipses the Sun. The sounding rockets had been previously launched and successfully recovered from White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico, during the October 2023 annular solar eclipse. They have been refurbished with new instrumentation and will be relaunched in April 2024. The mission is led by Aroh Barjatya, a professor of engineering physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida, where he directs the Space and Atmospheric Instrumentation Lab.

Now, however, 11,279 coordinates obtained by WIRED show not only a flood of traffic to Epstein’s island property—nearly a decade after his conviction as a sex offender—but also point to as many as 166 locations throughout the US where Near Intelligence infers that visitors to Little St. James likely lived and worked. The cache also points to cities in Ukraine, the Cayman Islands, and Australia, among others.
Near Intelligence, for example, tracked devices visiting Little St. James from locations in 80 cities crisscrossing 26 US states and territories, with Florida, Massachusetts, Texas, Michigan, and New York topping the list. The coordinates point to mansions in gated communities in Michigan and Florida; homes in Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket in Massachusetts; a nightclub in Miami; and the sidewalk across the street from Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

Updated 3/29/2024, 10:03 pm ET: In an email following publication, Kathleen Wailes, Azira's third-party spokesperson, says that WIRED's description of the Epstein island data as "deliberately collected" was "incorrect and misleading." Instead, she says, "[t]he data referenced in the story was compiled by someone using a free trial, not an employee of Near. The parameters of that report were determined by the user and not Near Intelligence."
Wailes further says that Azira, as a new company, "is not accountable for the actions and business practices of Near Intelligence referenced in the article."
"While some parties have used geolocation data in the past for purposes that are inappropriate, Azira’s management team is committed to doing everything possible to protect consumer data, adhere to known laws and regulations, and safeguard the proper use of consumers’ data," Wailes says. "Our policies are clearly stated on our website."
Following publication, Azira temporarily made the Epstein island data public after having removed it prior to WIRED's publication. The data was again removed after WIRED alerted the company to the public availability of the report.

Mother-son duo accused of running prostitution ring in New Mexico

There has been a major bust in a multi-state prostitution operation that stretched across southeast New Mexico. The mother and son duo are now facing federal charges for the scheme that involved five different massage parlors in New Mexico and three more in Texas.
Shaoping Wen and Xu Wang were arrested last week in southern New Mexico, nearly nine months after federal authorities were first tipped off.
According to federal documents, an undercover agent entered a massage parlor in Lubbock, Texas in June of last year and paid an Asian woman for a massage. He was eventually offered sex if he paid more.
Documents say the agent left before anything happened. Investigators quickly learned Wen’s name was on the lease, and that parlor was featured on two different websites advertising sexual services in exchange for money.
Documents also show there was a second undercover operation at another Lubbock massage parlor. During that operation, officers arrested a Chinese woman after she reportedly offered sex for more money. Wen reportedly bailed her out of a jail a few days later.
According to court documents, investigators eventually placed a tracking device on Wen’s car, which led them to five more massage parlors in New Mexico – two in Roswell, two in Carlsbad, and one in Clovis. All of those were reportedly operated by Wen.
Documents alleged that the tracking device also showed Wen’s car at the Roswell Air Center, where surveillance video caught her picking up multiple Asian women and driving them directly to the massage parlors after they reportedly flew in from New York and California.
Investigators say all of the New Mexico locations were also listed on the websites offering sexual services.

According to a recent article by the The New York Post, a former FBI agent claims that Marion “Suge Knight” financed the murder of Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace and that his intended target was Biggie’s boss Sean “Puff Daddy / Diddy” Combs, who was in the vehicle ahead of Biggie’s SUV on the night of his murder in 1997 in Los Angeles.
Retired FBI agent Phil Carson (who worked the case for two years) says Biggie’s murder was funded by Suge and carried out by Nation of Islam convert and hired hitman Amir Muhammad (aka Harry Billups) with the help of corrupt Los Angeles cops. He says, “All the evidence points to Amir Muhammad. He’s the one who pulled the trigger. There were plenty of others who helped orchestrate it [and] allowed him to pull the trigger. Suge Knight financed the murder. Suge was ticked off that his cash cow Tupac was murdered. Suge had an accountant that was part of Death Row Records who helped do the financial side of things to pay for the murders.“
Carson adds, “[The alleged cover-up] was the biggest miscarriage of justice in my 20-year career at the FBI. I had evidence that LAPD officers were involved and I was shut down by the LAPD and city attorneys inside Los Angeles.” When Carson told Puffy he was the target, he says he was “pretty freaked out.” Elsewhere, per the LAPD, the criminal investigation into Biggie’s murder officially remains open, but there has been little to no activity in years. Meanwhile, Suge is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter following a 2015 hit-and-run death during the filming of the movie ‘Straight Outta Compton.’
