>main class sould [sic] depend on random effects

Nope, that's not what I suggested. My point was that the possible downside (and upside) of alchemy was simulated in some way in ADD. They could try to simulate it in another way, such as you can only feed two alchemist potions to a character within a day without repercussions. You might give them more, but there will be side effects, be they random or not. Maybe they would reduce an ability for a day, increase aggression, create mutations, give them a boner that won't go away...

I'd like to see some randomness though to make the player get tempted to gamble and give the possibility of positive effects, such a side effect might raise strength by 6 but lower intelligence by 2. I suppose the effects shouldn't be too extreme, unless you feed them several excess potions. No your colon explodes drenching everyone with shit in a 60 feet radius.

Alchemy should at least include the science of experimentation in some manner.

rather than being a specialized chemist, the alchemist class is a codification of the D&D 3.5e rogue build known as the flask rogue

they added a form of spellcasting (extracts) that focuses on personal buffs and spell effects that center on or originate from the caster (such as fire breath). Compounding this with mutagens makes a tank mage and daily bombs mitigates the reliance on purchased acid and other splash weapon

because the extracts are intended to center on the self, they added the inability for anyone but the alchemist to ingest them, the reason given being about each alchemist tuning their extracts to their own physiology and needing to take a discovery to make a generic version

Eh, I wouldn't agree with his statement, unless we were talking about a Paladin (or other angelic being). Torturing a paladin is giving him another reason to kick your ass when he gets out of the situation he's in.

The easy way to get around that, is the fact that you would just have to threaten someone else, and only the most extreme of circumstances would alleviate his code to prevent harm (either by the fact that letting information go would create even more harm)

Compared to, an enslaved gremlin creature, goblin or kobold, take your pick... there is not the same amount of conviction, especially for creatures who come from a society where they are at best second class citizens under much stronger baddies.

You could even get a demon/devil to squeal with cold iron/silver, and some holy water applied to the face

Assuming everyone undergoing torture is a trained spy who has information they're willing to sacrifice everything for to keep it out of your hands isn't how things work. Even before we get into the moral argument.

"Our laws states, that faith in interrogations should neither be given nor discarded: indeed those are fragile and dangerous and can fail to reveal the truth. Some obstinate by patience or toughened by the torments of life hold torture in contempt, and it is not possible to make them tell the truth. Others are so impatient they will lie to spare themselves the slightest torture: and thus will change their words, implicating themselves, but others as well in crimes."

So basically all he's saying is not to take criminals at their words and in a legal context that people shouldn't be condemned only by declarations.

Such great wisdom.

Torture is mostly used in democratic countries following rule of law to obtain admissions of guilt for kangaroo courts that don't require factual evidence, because by the time you're done pulling all man's fingernails he's ready to confess he eats children after raping them and have personally gassed 5 billion innocent people out of sheer hatred.

About people being impressed or not. Considering how cheap, and easy it is to make hamburgers from scratch for a large group, it has been a default if I didn't want to worry about dishes, or wanting to poorfag it up, to use more money on alcohol. Learned how when I worked in a restaurant. And people were easily impressed, because they simply did not make them from scratch. It just comes down to what people are familiar with in the kitchen. And out of convenience, a lot of shit that was routine is not as common. Like making bread from scratch, without a machine.

> Whats the best way to prep for storytelling in such a game?

1. Have a rough idea who the campaigns' big movers and shakers are. Base them on real people you know so you can instinctively guess what they would do when they plans go astray, even those you did not imagine would.

2. Create generic material you can use on the spot. Ships, Warriors, maybe even puzzles if you have a group that might appreciate them.

3. Pick elements from your player characters' background, and use them creatively. The most obscure elements make sometimes for the strongest link. Let's say that a character mentioned an element of his childhood, like a school. If the Empire captain is recognized as a childhood acquaintance (share the same planet, region, city and school), it changes the dynamic of the rp and involves the character more.

> Any dos and donts as a GM?

<< Have a character dedicated to something that has to be done separately.

E.G.: Pilot / Spacer. Either give some of that shit for free so everyone can enjoy. But this also applies to Shadowrun Decking and similar stuff. Warning! Some groups stipulates that, since Jedi are able to do what most non-jedi can do anyway and have different agendas, that Jedis / Non-Jedis should not be mixed. While I do not use such a rule, I understand.

<< Prepare too much very specific stuff.

When you prepare something awesome, you kinda wanna use it, which might end you pushing for circumstances where that thing will happen, thus ruining it. Produce generic stuff easily flavored in.

>> Give players agency.

A featureless plain is boring, confusing, frustrating because you don't know where to go. A railroad is the same because choices don't matter or matter too little. A road system with clear paths and Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

Depends on the version of the RPG you're using.

d6; You go all Jedi or No Jedi. You can allow force sensitive nonjedi, but you can't let them hve the same power suites.

d20 OCR/RCR; You ban certain powers but overall, as long as they're different specialties it's fine.

d20 SWSE; You ban the "force replaces skills" powers, and tell your Jedi player to not be a spotlight hogging dick. Or you ban the Jedi class.

EotE ... fuck if I know? Does it even support Jedi yet?

Or at least some suggestions in the book reading thread, or even the manga thread if nothing else. All of this game material is just blatantly ripped off of better writers. Medieval bestiaries, adventure-type movies, and even video games can all help to round things out.

If you absolute insist on game modules, then Ten Foot Pole is one of the better review blogs for old-school or 5E materials. You can also dig through the old Judges Guild content. Keep in mind this is pretty much all fantasy-leaning, so it won't help you much for other genres.

How bout crustaceans?

The local surface river systems are heavy with oversized crayfish, and I had the modern settlement employing those as a food source.

Massive stone aquifers full of big fat crayfish... and giant blind catfish?... And a subsequent ecology of lesser crustaceans/arthropods (giant subterranean isopods)?

> Produce is cheaper by volume since it takes less to feed a family of dwarves

Wouldn't food be more expensive per volume since less would be produced per capita? Also being underground I would imagine food isn't as abundant as above ground, even accounting for dwarven agriculture, fishing, hunting and gathering.

> Calender's are neither solar nor lunar, time is measured by a candle-clock burning at a known fixed rate, precise dates and times are kept by the civil/religious magistrates who sound alarms at relevant intervals (first quarter, half-candle, third-quarter, new candle) alarms probably aren't sounded during the "sleep" period. The length or even existence of weeks/months are entirely civil/liturgical and are unrelated to seasons and astronomy.

Perhaps underground seasons could be based on various underground phenomena, like having a wet season/dry season cycle based on when snow melts on the surface and underground rivers swell each year, or if part of the year has more earthquakes/tremors than usual.

Also since there is no sun it would be fun to play with the sleep cycle, like having a 16 or 40 hour day/night cycle. You could also have multiple sleep cycles going simultaneously: dwarves have a 16 hour work day, they work 8 hours, sleep 4 hours and have 4 hours to themselves. In addition there a 4 'shifts' each dwarf belongs to based on the family they were born into, so that at any given hour 50% of the population is at work, 25% is asleep and 25% is off work.

> Cemeteries do not exist instead family estates build a tomb/catacomb attached to their main property/structure. The "landless" poor or those otherwise without families to receive their body are dumped into wherever waste is normally deposited.

I feel like usable organic material would be at a premium so deep underground because due to the lack of sunlight there would be no photosynthesis to replenish nutrients in the soil or whatever growth medium they use, bodies would probably be composted or cremated and used as fertilizer in some way, perhaps thrown into an underground lake or pond to feed a population of subterranean fish and crustaceaPost too long.  No.423864 [Open thread]

Background: I am a forever-DM who enjoys complex/intricate worldbuilding and long-term campaigns. The last campaign ran weekly for over two years and the characters reached only level 10. We concluded the campaign prematurely because one of the players, who was integral to the overarching plot, had to move across the country. Likewise, other players became overwhelmed with work and university.

I am ready to start a new campaign. I am taking note of the fate of my last game and am building this one such that players can come and go, and characters can be introduced (and die) without much ado. It was a mistake to unite my players so intimately with the fate of the universe they were playing in.

Setting: It is going to be a cliche high-fantasy old-world that relies heavily on standard tropes and is large enough to contain virtually all D&D-related lore with a flexibility for appropriate changes that add spice and novelty. There will be an Adventurer's Guild that has been active across the globe for a long time. It will be similar 'Goblin Slayer'-esque, with ranks, a fair amount of commissioned quests to choose from, and the Guild will provide wealth and experience for completed quests.

ITT: I would like to get as many ideas as possible for quests of any level requirement, but especially for low-level (LVL 1-3) characters. I would like them to be more than fetch-quests and "go take care of monster(s) for us," but I'll need some of them, too. I hope this thread can be a resource to other DM's who need some inspiration.

Please post short descriptions quests and quest ideas:

I'd say first to consider a classic game that focus predominately on exploration, adventure, and self-motivation, as discussed here:

>>422895

But since we're talking quests:

>Standard Fantasy RPG trope quests

Nothing beats a quest for a specific magic item that somebody else (or maybe a lot of people) also wants. The reward of the quest is presented upfront. Because the motivational conceit is I want shit, you can have an interesting array of rivals as antagonists - anything from a greedy sorcerer coveting a ring of power, to a noble knight aiming to get a staff of resurrection to bring back his wife, and all the colors in between. It also adds time as a factor, which means there's an actual chance of failure; and that failure, in turn, can mean more things to do. From a meta-perspective, device-driven quests can be applied at almost any level of play, or even extended over entire campaigns.

>Your favorite quests you've played/run

In tabletop? A wizard used magic to capture and imprison the human half the party (which consisted of PCs and henchmen), so our non-human remainder had to infiltrate through his defense of cyclops guards. It was a mess, people died, but fun.

In general? Hard to say, but probably the side-quests in Morrowind and (the better ones in) Oblivion. But it's difficult to say, because the best "quests" there aren't really quests, so much as shit that you pick up in rumors and follow on your own. Things like finding a letter and a key on a corpse in a tomb, and following the directions from place to place.

>Your favorite quests with twists and unexpected outcomes

Dunno. I've pretty much always seen them coming. The best "twist" ending I know of, though, is the end of the film the Usual Suspects.

For running a game, the first NPC I introduced was a bad guy, and I made it very obvious he was a bad guy, up until the point that they eventually decided he wasn't a bad guy, before immediatPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

It took 4 years but it finally happened. Those Empire forces you like are finally back in style. No Brettonians because the Ghoul meme is too stronk but this one is interesting.

For quite a while Stormcast Eternals have been something of a joke. They wanted them so hard to be the new Ultramarines they even replaced the statue outside Warhammer World with one of them. They thought these uniform faceless Spartan knock offs would be the hip new thing with the kidz!

Then Age of Sigmar actually came out and shit like the relaunched Moonclan Grots and Ghouls ended up much more popular. Probably because they were mostly the same sculpts with a few new and improved ones that could be used in both AoS and Fantasy and its hard to fuck up something like a Grot or a Skaven or whathaveyou.

But somethings been changing at GW lately. at first they tried to make the Stormcast less uniform. Some wear robes, many dont have helmets and in general they tried to diversify them. Which only meant more Stormcast models as the originals didn't go away. This for people who didn't follow what happened post End Times lead to them becoming a joke. Every set or starter box including spin off games like the massively popular shadespire had to include multiple releases for them and 1 for other races if you were lucky. But it wore on people. At conventions and even in one case a private industry event by GW the employees were nervously joking "and no its not another stormhost being revealed today" and the second edition rulebook -many would argue the first actual edition- out and out calls them 'Sigmars greatest mistake' while reintroducing things like Bright Wizards from the realm of fire, highly industrial engineers from the realm of metal and so on. All of a sudden the reject space marines, reject primaris if you want to get technical i suppose, were being treated as the redheaded stepchild of the company the consumers treated them as.

Since then they have started to take something of a backseat. They are releasing more stories, boxes and side games without them and now a reworked Empire and Dwarves army book is showing up intended to literally replace Stormcast Eternals with Warhammer Fantasy Battle minatures.

So I've noticed there is a superficial similarity between medieval England and medieval Japan, which makes sense as both are island nations off the coast of powerful continental empires. They both possess semi-noble warrior classes possessing warrior codes, hierarchical feudal governments, deeply supernatural worldviews and cultures along with other similarities. Of course these are superficial similarities like I said, if you analyze the reasons and purposes and mindset behind it all they are vastly different but it got me thinking what would a setting fusing these two cultures at their meeting points look like?

Eyy, they also stopped doing the bad things too. Hell, most things are bad because they made a point of saying so.

This leads to a point of contention in the mashup. Prescriptive law vs common law. The Japs have a tendency to do law on a case by case basis, being lenient on the poor and super strict on higher castes. The English however treat law like a fire, if you cross certain points you will be burned to the fullest extent of the heat you take. The whole Magna Carta Libertatum was a power play by the nobles to say that even the king was not above the law.

Then there is ofcourse the Roman option of two orators telling off each other in front of a jury, which may have survived in the Welsh for a time.

These avenues of justice may have no synthesis, and are likely mutually exclusive. Either indivual rights, societal cohesion, or reputations/honor come first.

British aristocracy "giving freedoms" to their subjects is really one of the most rosy tinted fairy tales and egregious examples of putting the cart before the horse. Common Law was more of a case of a state stepping too far in demands upon the locals, and needing to placate them by agreeing with their values, than some benign king deciding all of a sudden that everybody is an individual.

Everything "good" the british elite did is propaganda by said elite, if you look closer, you'll always have pragmatic reason for them to remove certain obligation or prohibition.

Any weeb who will dare and compare a mighty nation chosen by our Heavenly Father himself to spread light and light of Christendom and civilisation in general throughout the world to that overglorified heathen subhumans should be hanged drawn and quartered.

You're aware that most modern schools of moral thought originate from Christian British philosophers and humanists, right? Like the exact value system that you probably hold right now was conceived and shaped by the English. If you think what they did was bad, it's because they realized it. They introduced rights for workers, they introduced protections for children, they introduced animal rights, they put a stop to slavery and then made it a point to flex their imperial muscle and put a stop to it wherever they could. Not to mention all the things that >>423668 mentioned in regards to legality. You're tunnel visioned with your bias to hate the English, so you miss the fact that they were responsible for more good than evil.

>You're aware that most modern schools of moral thought originate from Christian British philosophers and humanists, right?

They literally don't.

>Like the exact value system that you probably hold right now was conceived and shaped by the English

It wasn't.

>If you think what they did was bad, it's because they realized it.

They didn't realize it.

Sage.
