Ive only ever heard bad things about larps. Like theres usually a group of friends who are the main characters and if you get in you are usually just given the job of being a goblin or some shit and everyone will get pissy if you actually kill anyone.

There's a huge sunk cost element to some of these LARP events. You definitely get cliques of people who have been going for years, building up their characters and becoming King Shit of Fuck Mountain. Even if you have every reason to kill off someone else's character, they'll still be salty about it. Not Dark Dungeons "NOT BLACKLEAF NOOOOO!!" salty, but still.. Then again, people who LARP purely for social reasons and attach intense emotional investment into their characters tend to be fags, and the kind of LARPs that reward and foster that high school popular kids clique bullshit tend to be prissy pseudo-goth Vampire/World of Darkness shit, anyways. So, fuck those people.

Broken bones and scars are pretty common in HEMA. It's why they stress actual martial arts training and legit gear, and not just boffer dicksword tap-tagging fights. But no one who does HEMA seriously will be socially pissy or hostile over some bumps and bruises.

Played in one a few years back. It was actually a lot of fun, with more of an emphasis on fighting and team tactics than magic. Most of us were too poor for anything more than a shield and a sword. a couple people went balls deep and bought armor, or made chainmail. There was just enough diversity to the weapons to keep things interesting each melee, and a few archers to make sure everyone's heads were on a swivel. It was mostly broken into nations/factions, so you'd either group up with one of them, or you'd stick it out as a nomad. Plenty of events and different games to keep things interesting, with lots of locations to pick where you wanted a battle or event to happen. I don't regret the time I spent doing it. We had a few camping trips as well, where there's a general big overarching story going on, but plenty of time to break off, and screw with other camps. It was fun. I don't regret it. We didn't really have any drama tho, so your mileage may vary.

I LARP, I do fantasy and post-apocalyptic. Pic related. I've been doing it for over 10 years at this point, it's great and I love it.
That being said, I live in Germany, and German LARP (European LARP in general it seems) is far superior than what I've seen from America.

Yes. Because a guy throwing around hacky sacks while yelling "fireball" doesn't do much to help with immersion.
Everything else at least looks more or less like the "real" thing, but good luck doing that with magic. Maybe if you specifically set out to create a system with magic that's easily recreatable with modern technology. Like yelling "Light" and then turning on a flashlight hidden in your robe.

Nah, LARPing is great fun. Pull of epic pincer manouvers - replicate Shaka Xulu's Bull Horn strategy with a combined greenskin charge of a goblin shield wall and orcs for the flankers. Great fun!

Have you never used an out of character sign before? Its just something stupid (like holding your pinky up or crossing your fingers or something) to let people know that what your saying doing is out of character (because you spend most of it in character in some games).
The gangraped sign is very different and involved shoving as many fists as you can into a paper sack until it breaks.

Moving goalposts..eh.. standards.
Houses made in 1970s (even if made well) will not meet current specifications. And there are a lot of minor specs like minimum height of the balcony rail, minimum width so it's accessible to fire-trucks etc.
Usually today's specs are don't apply to old buildings but as soon as you try to change something that where the local government slams you with the hundreds of details that is needed to be in spec.

Went once, it had no "main characters" except if you count the leaders of the races, but they would usually hang back as they were managing the game both IC and OOC.
Anyways I went to it for like half a year, I kitted out pretty well, mail, breastplate, sword 'n board and various other shit.
We had a huge event (around 500-600 people) where all the evil races (goblins, dark elves, iron and normal orcs) would fight against all the good races (humans, dwarves and elves) at the end of the day for one climatic battle.
I, for some reason, ended up standing beside the king in the shield wall. Which meant the other side thought I was some kind of bodyguard and I had like five people and a mage charge me directly and I died 2 mins into the battle.
10/10 would recommend.
Now you also have some of the smaller larping groups or even some that just go to a local park and play with foam swords. It really depends what organization you join.

From what I understand, American LARP just isn't all that good. Ranges from theater kids and mall goths doing WoD/camarilla shit, to a dozen guys in t-shirt "tunics" swinging boffer dickswords at each other at a local park. There's the occasional, rare LARP event that try to set up the big tent towns and tend to have a few hundred people at them, like some kind of impromptu ren faire, but those are hard to come by and probably won't be as good as you're hoping anyways.
