Let's talk Shadowrun. Do you have any stories to tell? Have you tried recreating Lord of the Rings using it? Have you considered porting campaigns from vidya to tabletop?

4th is best. 3rd is also alright. Augmentation, Arsenal, Runner's Companion, Street Magic, Unwired are essential. I'd avoid most of the pre-written modules, but Food Fight is top kek and a decent introduction to any campaign, even if you ignore or alter the follow-up mission.

>>303424

How in the goddamn would you do that?

>porting the vidya campaigns to tabletop

Eh, they're way too straightforward and simplistic IMO. Little room for creative thinking and planning. Maybe the overall plots could work, though.

I sure hope you're not going to use the Returns campaign with Harlequin, OP.

I've found the Shadowrun Primer is pretty good for getting new people into the world. It's got stuff about megacorps, a timeline of historical events, descriptions of all the different states in North and Central America, info about dragons and races etc. It helps to have a background to the world so you can make and play a more believable, informed, character.

I just feel really compelled by Shadowrun's setting, it makes me want to write for days. Also GMing for it felt pretty natural, aside from me being new and having to check the book pretty often but I'm sure that will go away as I've been studying 3rd like it's a holy book.

That's the plan since none of my friends DM. Honestly I just feel lucky to have friends who are willing to be players in something so time consuming. We'll see if that changes, but for now I feel like a natural born DM with little interest in being a player. I'd rather be the guy hiding and revealing secrets than the one searching them out, and Shadowrun is all about juicy secrets.

>SJWs infesting

It's supposed to be punk.

Where the scrappy oppressed underdogs fight the man (this is how the left unironically sees itself while fighting against people who are genuinely being oppressed by their governments and media) and combine this with the fantasy racial aspect where these white leftists can pretend they are non-white/non-human.

Naturally this would attract the most left of the left.

Now back on topic.

With how bizarre things have gone IRL, you can incorporate tons of it in a shadowrun game.

Demon worshiping vampires with high rank in corporations running child trafficking rings. The only people fighting against these vampires are Humanis /Pol/iclub. If you fight back you are seen as an anti-metahuman or metahumanphobe. (At least a quarter of the Humanis /Pol/iclub are married to elves or have elf fever. They call the elves, honorary humans. another quarter are meta-humans who sympathize or who have a human parent.)

An old frog god manifests itself in the matrix but only to members of the vampire hunting Humanis /Pol/iclub (It might be an AI based on a god or an actual magic being in the matrix).

Demon worshiping shamans try to take over korea, people find out riots and chaos.

Make the players do something good for the people with low personal reward except feel good and then tell them how the media spins it and how half the population is being tricked into hating the players.

I hope that was a shadowlands post and not legit what the book was trying to tell you. Due to their stats alone more often than not trolls will be dumb hulking monsters. Now they're not all pants-on-head retarded and most have average intelligence, but average intelligence isn't that great in a world of 6+ Ints. Now if it was a post on the shadowlands you have to take it with a grain of salt as it was written by a troll talking about trolls. Still I feel like 3rd edition's entry isn't that bad, still cries about the cliches a bit much but by the end it's admitting that most trolls are toughs who take criminal jobs because they're natural born enforcers. Sounds about right given trolls are the blacks of shadowrun's world and so of course they'd bitch about stereotypes they themselves reinforce.

Well, here's some interesting points in time which can be used as anchors from which to begin:

> 2035: General Secretary Kropunin resigns over the failure of the Euro Wars. The Democratic Recovery Alliance takes power and initiates halfhearted reforms. Vladivostok, Rostov and other strategic cities closed since 2009 reopen.

> 2037: The National Soviet Reconstructionists defeat the Democratic Recovery Alliance in national elections after the Alliance fails to bring about economic recovery. Viktor Kantemir becomes General Secretary.

And if you're willing to move WAY back in time:

> 2016: President Chelenko is assassinated, during a three-week period in which the leaders of the United States, Great Britain and Israel are picked off as well. MVD forces kill Chelenko’s assassin during a violent confrontation. News reports later paint the assassin as delusional, but conspiracy theories abound.

Perhaps power struggles inside Mafiya or presidential election sabotage?

On top of FASA there is three more reasons; first nanomachines, son you see they put nanomachines in and gave rules to use what are essentially your cliche sci-fi nanomachines which means you can quite literally do almost anything with them and I mean anything you could think of your only limit being the rules and giving your GM "ideas" when it's time to throw a curveball your way.

Second, the open wide internet essentially ripped power right out of the Megacorps' collective fingertips, the world building of a free non-restictive wireless internet can basically be described as change, change everywhere and it's now virtually impossible to truly hide or be disconnected from the Matrix for everybody (see nanomachines) and ditto the ones spying on you so Shadowrunning got a whole lot harder.

Finally morality, Shadowrunners went from rebel mercenaries with a conscious or some semblance of honor to straight out money grubbing bastards that actually makes the cut throat ruthless gangs look tame by comparison, and makes the very corporations, their employeesm and corporate culture they sneer at look reasonable by comparison. It even goes so far as to paint the Megacorps as not being full evil even Aztechnology got in on this with Blood Magic being a distinct and separate practice that's been conflated with Mayan practices, and it's more or less confirmed Shadowrunners are so poor their comments on what is "high class" should be taken with a grain of salt.

Meanwhile while this is happening world building and metaplot brings in Technos and the Matrix transformation, and a duality of technology and magic, and fucking sentient AI up the ass going so far as to make some short, but confirming, fluff that they have "towns" and their own communities and social circles and the different varieties that exist (note: Return's Dragonfall falls under the "alien and incomprehensible type"). Making a Face in a running team with zero hacking skills in 4e/20th and be viable in a full matrix group is perfectly doable since you can give him all the traits for social bonuses dealing with AI and any of the other team can just copy his own programs and give them to the Face to fire and forget no problem.

I got the 5e rulebook to run a game with my group and I never noticed any of this.

I didn't bother with most of the stories or fluff they put in, but I never noticed anything about nanomachines, or the changes to the Matrix and Megacorps. Even during character creation everything seemed fairly similar to previous editions.

Was it all in sourcebooks or did I miss all of that shit through sheer dumb luck?

They took it out, the nanomachines for example isn't in 5e because they removed it via metaplot. most of this stuff is in supplements where most metaplot and world building lies. megacorps changed back fro,m what was happening due to metaplot, and the Matrix was changed back to something resembling 3e matrix rules.

Somewhere along the line I decided to build an unarmed adept with decent social skills (since nobody else wanted to touch those). The skills were easy enough, but does anybody have any input on making effective hand-to-hand characters? I'm looking at the martial arts options from Run & Gun but they seem to be a lot of investment for little return.

Holy fuck, okay you newbies conversations on this board is fucking slow, alright? You don't need to bump a thread if you've got nothing to say, if you have a legitimate question there is no reason to expect a reply for at least a week. The game is designed for specialists, you're pretty much a slightly gimped Pornomancer, so instead of investing in a lot of melee you should become the face of your group and invest in your social skills.

I have been a LONG time SR player/reader. I remember the first time I saw the Jeff Laubenstein artwork in that first promo flyer (in fact, I still have it). I had become burned-out on the AD&D novels and the Star Trek novels of the time (what we would now call the Prime Timeline, post TMP), had re-read Gibson's Neuromancer, Count Zero, Burning Chrome & Mona Lisa Overdrve; Mirroeshades edited by Bruce Sterling & a few others. I had burned out on playing AD&D, especially with the magic system (at the time) where make a mistake in casting had no consequence.

Then I picked up SR1, using a gift-certificate. I have been hooked like a BTL-head slotting the latest porn hotsim.

Yes, I have ALL the books, from SR1 to current. I even contributed to Ka*Ge, the only authorized SR fan-mag & still have a full set. I still have my SR1 'goatskull' pin.

My first character was inspired by Johnny Mnemonic (THE SHORT-STORY, not the film) & became a fan-created template. I later moved onto my own mage character.

I love reading the books, especially the fiction (and yes, I have ALL of those too)

My advice for new players? Sit in on a game, ask questions, watch & learn. Go through the paces of the latest QuickStart adventure (yes, you will have fun in Food Fight 5.0). Don't feel intimidated by the rules. Take your time reading them. Then check out SR-Anarchy. It's not the streamlined rules most people assume it is, but it does make things a little more smooth & opens the game up for more Narrative than Rules-Lawyering.

Find your niche. Play around with the templates. See what fits. When you're ready, create YOUR character.

The Sixth World will chew you up, spit you out, stomp you flat, then burn to ash what's left. And then it will get mad. But show some respect & you might survive long enough to get paid. *might*.

And as always, Shoot Straight, Conserve Ammo, Geek the OTHER team's Mage First, and Never, Ever, EVER Cut A Deal With a Dragon.

From what I know, Alaska is governed by the Athabaskan Council. The two major players there are Athabaskan Oil (the Alaskan pipeline, except cyberpunk'd - so oil, mining and all that heavy industry), and the Iris Firmware (subsidiary of Renraku, deals with the Athabaskan Grid - so the net, communications and all that shit). Recently the Astral Space has become visible above certain areas of Alaska. They're also mostly focused on the local Indian tribes, while the anglos don't get any say in the politics.

So potential plot hooks? Mostly dealing with the grid or oil. An interesting scenario would be to use the frigging cold for something - Iris is creating a supercomputer in Alaska, and they're using the extreme cold to make near-absolute zero cooling and superconductors. An entire AI, devoted to studying the Astral breach. Which will of course go wrong.

Right now I have a couple rough ideas for what Anchorage is like, based on some sparse knowledge found online and related to the Athabascan Council.

>major criminal competition over control of best smuggling routes within it

>strong Ares and Wuxing presence, struggles for power with totalitarian native ruling council

>slum/barren neighborhood made up of huge barges and ships tied together out in the way

>barrens that are carved into huge iceflows

>barrens stalked by yeti and giant magical wolves and bears

As well as a couple others not-quite-formed concepts for it. Anybody have any ideas about Anchorage in Shadowrun?

At this point, any number of things might fit into Shadowrun.

The question is - does the campaign keep running?

Do people keep coming back every week to play the game?

It is damn near pointless to make a one-shot that you brag about on the Internet, but that never gets played more than once.

So I'm going to start GM'ing this Shadowrun 4E, and since the entire group is new to Shadowrun, no one knows how to play this right and the matrix and astral shit is kind of overwhelming.

We the books we have are the 20 Anniversary Core, Runner's Companion, Arsenal, Augmentation, Safehouses, Unwired and Street Magic.

So far, the party is composed of a Gun Adept/Infiltrator, a full on combat mage, and a Technomancer. Whatever tips I've grabbed are from the Shadowrun Storytime but I'd like to know more to prepare a better game and maybe some veterans from /tg/ might give some advice.

What should I do? Is 5E better than 4E? How should I prepare runs? Should I ban anything beforehand? Why does Food Fight sound like a great way to start a game of Shadowrun and makes me want to run it right now?

>What should I do?

First things first, ask your players what they expect from Shadowrun. See if they want a game of neo-noir subterfuge and double-crossing or a balls to the wall futuristic shoot-em-up.

>Is 5e better than 4e?

According to most people, yes, primarily because it makes the Matrix interesting and something you actually have to build a character around instead of simply throwing your money at until you have all the best devices and programs.

>How should I prepare runs?

Since your players are always going to come up with a way to do the run you never even thought about, think up events rather than methods. Don't make the players find the one open window in the warehouse to get in, just give them a warehouse, a guard who has a keycard, a security monitor they can talk into opening the door, a security system they can just hack, etc.

Remember to make things have consequences. If they're throwing lethal force around at rent-a-cops, they're going to get a much harder time down the road because it costs a lot more to pay for Mike Security's funeral, give his family a pension, and train someone to replace him than just resetting his broken bones and giving him some vacation time to recuperate.

>Should I ban anything beforehand?

4E's Matrix is a flaming pile of garbage and it takes an eternity to accomplish anything in. Seriously try getting the techno to reconsider.

And if anyone tries to bring you anything from a book by the name of WAR!, punch them in the dick for being a powergamer.

>Why does Food Fight sound so great?

Because it's a simple combat tutorial that also comes with a nice introduction into the world of Shadowrun and has a lot of ways you can play off of it.

Thanks man, Shadowrun is a big system, and kind of hard to get into, but I really liked the character creation, and they ways it could be played.

The Adept player looked like he was more interested into a Black Trenchcoat campaign, but I never really asked him or the group, we're just testing the system so I still got time to see if they'd like Pink Mohawk or Black Trenchcoat for the campaign.

Events sound easier and far more interesting to implement and play, but I was thinking layouts of facilities and places, since cover is kind of a big deal in battles, also was trying to see how to balance the lethal/non-lethal ways.

We all have the same 4E books and I''ve barely touched Matrix shit, so I guess I'll have to look into it, since that shit does seem kind of byzantine, I'll try to see if I can find 5E core to use those matrix rules, but thankfully, Adept player is also studying the rules and generally helps running whatever game as a player, so for now, 4E Matrix it is.

And having just read the 4E version of Food Fight, I now understand why so many people love it.

I have a question, and forgive me if this is the wrong thread for it. I'll be running Shadowrun Anarchy this weekend (myself and my group have never played SR), If I read the rules correctly it say all combat rolls are opposed. I'm a bit confused as to how this plays out if something like these scenarios happen:

Example 1

Let's say PC attacks with 9d6 and rolls

2,3,4,4,4,4,5,5,6 (7 hits)

and NPC reacts with 7d6 and rolls

4,4,4,4,5,5,5 (7 hits)

Does the PC still hit or did the NPC dodge it since he rolled all hits?

Example 2

PC attacks with 6d6 and rolls

4,5,5,5,6,6 (6 hits)

NPC reacts with 6d6 and rolls

4,4,4,5,5,6 (6 hits)

Does the PC hit or did the NPC dodge? Is it a flat pass/fail or do I judge it based on the who rolled higher hits?

Example 3 (a stretch)

Again PC attacks with 6d6 and rolls

6,6,6,6,6,6

NPC reacts with 6d6 and rolls

6,6,6,6,6,6

This only holds up if the answer to the previous example was to rule in favor of the higher rolls, but who wins?

If I missed something in the rules let me know.

So, I'm preparing a shadowrun prison campaign. My players will be on a prison island full of rejects from different parts of the world and have to find a way out. I'm making them create their characters with the point system so they won't spend any point in money. I want it to be more or less based in anime prisons with weird people. In particular Dead Leaves with crazy research, implants and superguards.

The thing is, how should I design a prison island big enouth to hold 4 cities and divide it in 4 levels?

Level 1: Politicians and highclass prisoners - Minimun security.

Level 2: Regular prison where they throw random people from tax evaders to murderers.

Level 3: REALLY dangerous people. From mass murderers to war criminals responsibles of genocides. Also rejected test subjects.

Level 4: Prisoners too dangerous to be alive but too valuable or powerful to be killed. Also test subjects with much better results.

The question is, which corporation pre-Big D assassination is interested to make international prison cities that breaks human rights that isn't Renkaku?

I've neverer played Anarchy, but from what I remember, it worked like:

If PC has more hits than opponent has dodges, he hits. The individual rolls don't matter.

For every 2 more hits than the opponent has dodges, you upgrade the damage by one category.

The enemy makes a body roll to reduce damage.

It has been a really long time since I played shadowrun so I might be wrong.

Don't know. Stuff in general. I'm going to start a 3rd edition prison campaign with my characters being prisoners living among other inmates in a super prison island with different towns with level restrictions.

Also, I was thinking to include magenetic experiments or even space stations to keep the weirdest magical creatures in place because there was a total lack of magic in the vacuum of space.

Well, one interesting option there to take would be to use Aztlan and have the prison island be located somewhere in the Caribbean. What looks as a peaceful island resort for the rich and famous is actually the place where the political prisoners and asylum seekers from all over the world are being held.

The twist here is that Aztlan has been perfecting a blood rite that lets them target anyone in a specific bloodline, given they have a blood sample. What this means is that, if they get your grandpa's blood, they can target you, your dad, or your half-brother you didn't even know existed with their magic. So, while the surface is filled with politicians, actors and who knows what other "elite", they're held there by Aztlan having a magical gun pointed at their entire bloodline. So of course, they're doing whatever they can to keep their families safe, while Aztlan reaps the rewards.

For extra shit and giggles, really turn the place into a tourist hotspot. Aztlan basically takes a blood sample of everyone who visits the island, and then later extort them for everything they've got. They plan on doing this to every important person in the world, and aren't too shy of throwing money at Isla Deathshead.

And if you want to include space stations or other weird shit, the island is also a perfect place for that. The ritual Aztlan uses was taught to them by a magical entity they're keeping in place there, either by ridiculously advanced tech (that everyone wants a piece of) or because they keep it inside a satellite and the only way to communicate with it is via a secret orbital array on the island.

As for other inmates, well, the island has its uses for them as well. The underground bunkers and tunnels are all filled with "expendable" inmates who're there to either be brainwashed and turned into staff, or experimented upon by the blood sorcerers. Throw in that the rich kids who're stuck on the island are also bored, and you could throw shit like Pizzagate on the island and make it work.

Your players are sent there to assassinate a bloke. Have fun when the whole island turns against you.

The thing is that I'm going to actually make it like a prison with different levels, but I sure was thinking about using Aztlan because they were a recurrent villain in my previous campaign. Because I guess no other corporation goes so close to Umbrella Corp. levels of stupid evil science besides Ares and Renkaku?

The levels of the prison are described here >331781 and I'm even thinking about adding a Fifth level set in a space station in orbit.

Well, there's Universal Omnitech, who work alongside Aztlan. So you could tie it with the previous campaign, while also focusing on a new megacorp - the no. 1 in the world when it comes to biotech and genetech. And, though one of their subsidiaries, they also focus on mining.

Said partner also is close with Wuxing, so you know, you can throw what >>331806 said in there.

So a potential way here to create "levels" would be to go deeper and deeper into the mines, with the "surface" level being the one reserved for the politicians, the one below for the regular prisoners, etc. Also, now that you've mentioned RE, you could steal the idea from the first movie where all the offices have artificial windows and all staring into a fake sky while actually being deep underground. Same thing, except for a prison.

 No.332391

>>332387

Hm.. at first I thought about making the levels more like small settlements arround a large island, The rich criminals on the coast, the usual criminals a bit deeper, the maniacs and death penalty inmates in almost in the center and the supercriminals in the center of the island, a massive building with a space launcher or however you call the spot NASA launch spaceships, english is not my first language. Between those settlements there is pure empty space full of awakened monsters, ghouls, angry spirits and other deadly things. That if we don't count the constant patrols and the sensored collar they all wear and a subdermical implant that will blow their heads off. I was even thinking about placing a tattoo focus on them so a guardian spirit could attack them in the astral plane even if the characters are projecting themselves.

Still, I like the idea of mines, mostly to give my players some 'jobs' to get prison currency. Getting some support for certain someone to escape in exchange of freeing him.

Or I could go crazy and just put them in a space prison.

You want to go crazy? Said subsidiary of UO focuses on rare metals. Shit that you could find in volcanoes.

So now, the whole mining operation takes place on a volcanic island, where the political prisoners are stationed in the high-quality spas and smaller settlements disguised as tourist destinations. Deeper inland you have the mining/processing complex, where the regular prisoners are kept and are working. Deeper still is the volcano itself, where the most dangerous criminals are forced to labor. And inside the volcano itself, hanging over all that lava and magma, are the labs where the experiments are kept.

>But could a whole body being cloned have any essence?

Essence is just a measure of your spirit, life force, and connection between your soul and your body. Also your soul in regards to soul eating. So yes they'd be alive and have essence, however they would not be anything special from a natural born metahuman in regards to anything that matters. You need to mix-up magic in the bioengineering process for that.

Critters made from cloning and other bioengineering are called Chimaeras, they are heavily skewed in the "science" aspect of abilities and one that can use magic and is "Awakened" is so rare that it'd probably be worth more then the reward for the run itself.

If you want to do it that way it's fine, but ridiculously expensive it's cheaper to just kidnap orphans from the Barrens and mind wipe them. Clones provide no special attributes for possessions from bugs, bug spirit possession itself will render natural attributes of the host irrelevant anyways. The big thing for cloning and bioengineering is the holy grail of controlling the Awakening process, and augmentation is the secondary benefit. Everything past that is kind of pointless.

Well, I was thinking about cloning mostly because that prevents, for example, random effects in bug spirit mutations, as I think how spirits mutate depends on the genetic disposition and stuff like that. Also taking the aspects of a particulary exceptional individual and recreate them for a massive army like in One Piece's Vismond army.

Also… because I see mass clonation cheaper than making people disappear. The only hard and expensive thing I see is the research, but from there go crazy. Maybe even getting close to find the secret of the metamagic gene and create enharced magically active soldiers.

>Also… because I see mass clonation cheaper than making people disappear.

Nobody cares about what happens to people in the Barrens just grab them and mind wipe them, no expunging of records they don't have is necessary. Although Clones do have essence technology and science fucks everything up and they still have essence issues, this is an explicit rule for cloned characters and bug spirits would not want to possess them on principle. Ghouls and Vampires have problems consuming essence from clones for the same reason, the equipment you need for essence healthy clones is too expensive compared to snatching orphans.

Very briefly played a game. Was incredibly fun. Played one of them riggers, and basically had a tank, and a few flying drones. We blew up a walmart, after some street thugs started threatening people searching for some elf chick.

No idea why they were doing it, and no idea why we helped. We sort of blew up the car we were chasing full of the guys who knew, and left the girl at the walmart.

Amazing session. Ended with us looking at the burning car slowly sinking into the water, and my character asking something along the lines of "Didn't we need them alive?".

We were rewarded with a end-there zoomout credit roll.

It basically boils down to what edition you get into by the time of 4e it's not even cyberpunk anymore, then it proceeds to drop the ball and double down on the "punk" part in 5e to the point where it starts to delve into really stupid shit and the most blatant SJW pandering crops up the most. Used to be that there was some actual politics and more intelligence put into the setting but now it's just not even maintaining it's own internal consistency like for example treating nanomachines and bio-augmentations as if it's the bleeding edge even though it's already been a thing for at least 3 decades. Making cyberspace really interesting to non-hackers so you could in fact have the potential to do something interesting but no the writers can't figure out what to do with AIs so the Monads are probably just going end up being Deus coming back, mars being a spooky place and that's that.

3.75e(pathfinder) if you are the edgy kid who believes that "Pathfinder fixed 3.5e" or if you are a weeaboo.

5e if you want to attract normies.

3e and earlier is FASA and the original creators of the game and therefore the original continuity (links to Earthdawn and all), anything since has been some pretender trying to break in to tabletop (and usually failing). Also the matrix is wired so none of that retarded hacking real life shit where deckers can suddenly brick guns because every retard has a wireless gun because "IT'S THE FUTURE!!!" even though that makes no god damn sense. Also a fuck of a lot less social justice. A big change to note in the rules from 3e to 4e was simplifying the dice rules and taking away the rule of 6 making it so every dice that landed 5 or 6 was a success instead of a d6 aiming for a TN which changes based on how difficult what they're doing is (with landing on 6 allowing the player to keep rolling and adding to the number to do the impossible with a good string of luck). I do understand why they made the change, they wanted the game to be more accessable and successes to be more obvious right on the roll so they could get a little of that "YEAH NATURAL 20 AGAIN!!!" excitement from d20 systems, not really a bad change but it makes it so you'll never get that moment where one die takes you over the line to doing something crazy and instead you have to hope you have enough die to clear the challenge success-wise. It's a change I don't like, but it's a change I understand.

As for how to think of the different versions between 1e-3e would be that basically it's all the same system just being worked on and streamlined and debugged. 1e was the first edition, I don't suggest it, 2e is considered classic Shadowrun and was likely the most popular, and 3e is the cleanest version of the original system with some good streamlining and with the rules not strewn over multiple books as well as rules that were more balanced (though magic is fuck off powerful).

If you want to play real Shadowrun I suggest either 2e or 3e in 2e's setting (though 3e's setting is nice if you've been running a game for a while and want to move time forward).

Rigger is in my experience the most rewarding way to play shadowrun, because you can feel how much you improve whenever you do anything.

Like, you start with a rotodrone with a mounted pistol that's barely enough to keep you alive and then you start making some money, and before you know it you have 20 turns in the initiative pass because you have like 40 robots armed to the teeth, and your character isn't even in danger because he's chilling at the getaway car eating McDonalds with his Rigger Console on his lap.

>2032: Ichirou is born

>2045: An arcade is opened- the events of the genesis game Kid Chameleon happened- No really. Ichirou took the place of the protagonist and won, saving all those children. Mysteriously, the arcade is abandoned shortly after and there is no news about it in media. Laterin the year, Ichirou runs away from home with nothing but a tortoise laptop in hand and sheer luck. He manages to live off of the streets until an ex-shadowrunner named Yorman takes him under his wing.

>2045-2049 Ichirou ditches his name and becomes Jacks. For the next few years, Jacks lives under Yorman's care, and is given the opportunity to follow his dreams of venturing in the matrix, and indulge in desires and learn skills that he could've only wished for previously. During this time, Jacks eventually makes his way to Shadowlands and becomes "Lowkey" on the matrix. On one of his birthdays, he was given a pet dog to have whom he named Fenrir. Unknowingly to Jacks, its actually a paranormal species of canine called Fenrir. During the latter half of his stay, Jacks skills in the matrix shot up an extremely quickly, leading him to be able to earn a large sum of money on his own while under Yorman's care. His body and mind both thrived and grew under Yorman's care. At the end of 2049, Jacks decided to strike it on his own. With a heartfelt goodbye, he left towards newer pastures. Jacks sits around, impatiently waiting in the matrix for a certain someone to contact him.

>>>>>[Yeah, I've been waiting on you to get in contact. Slow as drek today.]

Soon after, a proper voice channel is opened between Jacks and Yorman.

"Hoi." was Jacks greeting

"Hoi kid. Keep you waiting long?"

"Feels like it on the Matrix."

"Had a job offer for you, now that we're in the new decade. Figured you might be getting bored stealing money from poorly guarded access points."

"This already sounds like a good start."

"You've got some serious talent, kid. You're barely an adult and you're a hell of a decker, better than most experienced ones I've seen. Only thing I could see against that is that you have a tendency to not notice things, and you'll iron that out in time. I can only think of a handful of other deckers that got good anywhere close to your age. I'd rather not see that go to waste. So why don't you take a trip into the big leagues? "I think you might take a shine to it. Only thing you've got to worry about is that it's dangerous. I mean that. Don't accept this offer unless you're sure you're willing to take some serious risks, or you know you can handle it."

Jacks thinks it over for a moment, thinking about the decision; as well as the money that could go with it. "It's worth a shot at least. If I don't like it, I could just not go on another."

"True enough. How many days you need to prepare?"

"I think a couple days should be good."

"You've got some extra time then. Four days from now is the soonest I can schedule this thing. I've got at least two others to go with you on the run, the pay'll be split between you. This is a starter job though. I can get you some good nuyen, but nothing crazy. 15K minimum, since the payload is pretty important. I've spent some good time setting this one up."

"That's more than enough to cover the month's rent right there…"

"With the potential for more jobs in the near future. I can't give out details over the Matrix, so it'll be a meeting in person. Four days from now unless you hear otherwise, at Mound's. You've been occasionally, right?"

"Yeah, that's right."

"I picked up a good Rigger through him. Dwarf, has a good transport van, not bad in a fight. Smuggler by trade before this. Other one I got's an Elf, musician by trade actually. I've known her for a while, and she's pretty much green at this sort of thing- the good news is that she's awakened. A real Wizard with more than just music. I want to get at least one more person for the run, and then I have a few other parties who might be interested in joining you."

"Sounds like a party waiting to happen."

"Speaking of, don't always expect good pay from these runs, alright? And don't be too picky about work. If you decide to keep doing this, expect that not all employers are going to be as generous. Of course, if a run pays too much it's good to be suspicious, but…"

"Usually. At the same time…get ready to set yourself some personal morals, kid. It's good to have a line to draw. Seperates the real runners from the animals."

"Does it get that bad?"

"It can. My advice is to look into your employers, try and dig up information even when they're vague and secretive about who they are. Don't agree to anything unless you're sure you want to get involved."

"You always said to do your research."

"It's a shame you tend to miss certain details…"

"It uh… just means I have someone to double check my work until it irons out."

"Luckily for you, there's some good runners at the bar. Most of them will run with you for no additional charge besides equal pay on the job. Some of the more experienced runners out there will take advantage of rookies."

There is certainly a chapter for Riggers in the german book but I haven't read it yet. Was it missing in the original release? If you mean the other books, they are just translations of the english release. Many books have some extra chapters added to them, according to the publisher. Those are usually about the ADL. Some english 4e books were re-written for 5e in german.

For example, "Shadowrun 2050" was released for 5e had an extra Berlin bit added, which they based on Dragonfall. It's written by Monika Schäfer, the game's NPCs are listed as contacts and they even used the map of Kreuzbasar. Too bad they didn't stat the playable characters from the game. That would have been a nice detail.

In character I beat him up for it but damn, everyone else seems indifferent - although they're playing competent characters. I dont even know why the DM approved his character, he's a pretty no nonsense guy and has expressed some distaste for party conflict. two of us are playing ex CAS / UCAS soldiers, one is a former denver gov't worker and the other is the decker who hasn't really divulged his backstory that much. We're all playing pretty competent and team oriented characters.

Am i wrong in having an issue with this character? We're working together because we've been poisoned and assigned to find an artefact in exchange for freedom. I want to transition the group into shadowrunners post completion, but i struggle to create any motivation for my character to keep working with his.

This was essentially a loophole that was snuck in which makes Shadowrunners perfectly legal to use against each other. They're also labeled as terrorists in the media. It gets even better when you can deliberately setup a situation where a Shadowrunner can go blow up a building and the local beat cop can't do a god damned thing to touch you, it's still a bad idea but it can happen.

>>punk IS "the man" now

>There is something incredibly depressing about that statement. It's like a spiritual injury.

Even back in the 1970s, Some fashion designer tried to use the New York Dolls as marketing promotional material and they told him to screw himself, so he just hired the Sex Pistols. Thus the Sex Pistols, who were some of the most famous punks, were sell-outs. Maybe punk was not "the man" but the Sex Pistols were "the man." IMHO the Clash were more punk than the Sex Pistols ever were. Anyway, back in 1980 to 1984, people were writing the first canonical cyberpunk stories, but they had no idea about how computers worked. Gibson was always awful, but a lot of folks were crazy for his speculations. They didn't know that in 1991, Linux would herald a new era.

Punk in the sense of "think for yourself" is not dead. Punk in the sense of 1980s nostalgia is about as dead as any other kind of nostalgia. Heck, "cyberpunk" itself was alive and vibrant and non-stereotyped for a very short period of time, and most of what we remember as "cyberpunk" was derided as derivative during the 1980s. Then by 1990, everyone and his dog was screaming "that's not REAL cyberpunk." In that wretched context of horrible people, Shadowrun was squeezed out, just to prove that God hates us. Shadowrun was always awful, and even Gibson hated it for stealing from him.

Cyberpunk was truly speculative fiction during the 1980s because no one knew how many computer crimes we would be able to get away with. Wozniak got away with lots. People after him got away with fewer. Initially Bruce Sterling was the prophet of individualism and anarchy and freedom from cop harassment. Then Bruce Sterling wrote _The Hacker Crackdown_ and basically did his best to sell out to the cops. And God let this happen, just to prove that He hates us. At that time, Linus had just barely invented Linux.

For the next few decades, Linux took off and changed the whole landscape of what was possible for a computer. People woke up to the notion that open source was a subversive idea - possibly the most important subversive idea. Right now, no one can speculate with the axioms that Gibson imagined back before 1984. We know a lot of Gibson's speculations are totally implausible now. We don't know if we are heading toward a privacy utopia of free darknets or an Orwellian dystopia where all the national networks are run by totalitarian thought police.

Texas should have plenty of shit going on:

The headquarters of Lone Star Security, the only AA corp that would dare give your decker the raspberry.

Half of Texas now belongs to Aztlan, aka Super Mexico. Plenty of conflict potential there

The CAS has a dedicated department for inspecting the megas and potentially taking away their extraterritoriality. Problem is they have to alert them of upcoming inspection. Unless of course some deniable assets get them proof that something big is going down.

As for edition that depends on your players. 5th is the newest and supposedly easiest to play but the book was written by fucktards who can't into layout and you'll be flipping back and forth a lot. 3rd is classic but it's from the 90s with everything that comes with that. Veteran players shouldn't have much trouble with either but 3rd is probably more for people who like retroclones and the like.

I was the group's face. The Knights-Errant had hired us to raid a gang's warehouse. The gang had stolen a cargo ship from a triad, had moved everything into said warehouse. We scoped out the place, we had a dwarf sniper, a rigger, a decker, two shamen, and an elf heavy.

I decided to pose as a rival gang leader that wanted to do business, maybe buy a few crates of weapons. Dwarf sniper covered me to the door, the shamen peered in, the decker hacked the camera feeds.

It was going alright, was getting really chummy, but still slow.

Then the rigger and elf found a 2 story high truck or bulldozer. And they were bored.

There I was, finally getting the gang to trust when my team drives through the wall, firing widly. I got shot, and the truck ran over my cybernetic arm.

Maybe someone here can help me with this. I understand that the 'optimal' way to play is four, hacket street, some form of magic, and infiltrator but why does it seem that some roles are contradictory? If a infiltrator does his job well there'll be no need for a street samurai or maybe even a shaman depending on if they use magic. Meanwhile if a mission goes south Infiltrator goes out the window and now it's Sams time to shine. Even moreso Hackers may as well be playing in their own little world where no one else has any form of input. This doesn't seem like a great group game from outside looking in. I'm just asking as I have a fiend in my group trying to run this and I'm giving the stuff a once over while waiting for confirmation.

Combat is the one chance in which the combat archetypes can shine while the others are usaully able to do something at least.

Actually, does anybody here have some published adventures, fan or official, that you'd recommend?

>Actually, does anybody here have some published adventures, fan or official, that you'd recommend?

I like the adventure in 3e's quickstart rules: Prototype Envy. It's a good quick 1 off to show players how things should work (starts off stealth but things are set up in such a way that combat may come up though the game shows that fighting isn't always the best option, shows off plot twists and if done right lets the player discover one on their own), also I'd suggest any of the runs from the First Run adventure book from 3e (the lore starts a little deep since it's 3rd, but the runs give a solid taste of what Shadowrun should be).

Long story short on how it should all work out: A good GM will give everyone their chance to shine, letting the sneaky guys pull off their sneaky business without that being the set up for combat usually with a run in with a rival corp/team acting as the combat encounter in the later parts of the run. A run isn't just a single op, it should be like a good story made of various acts each of which feel a little different, sure you have the break in to the secured lab to obtain the secret project, but you also have the backstab ambush at the drop off point, the chase that takes you through the city as you attempt to lose the heat, and then the confrontation with the man (or dragon) pulling the strings that ties everything in a neat bow wrapping around a package of nuyen for the runner's reward (if they did well).

Take the current city and inject rampant dystopian corporate greed into it sounds like a good start.

What industries does the city have? What is it known for? What major cultural landmarks are there? The Corps all have fingers in those pies.

Remember that when magic came back it reversed a lot of people's fortunes. To make a radical oversimplification, the rich became poor and the poor became rich. The affluent areas of your real-world city? Those are slums now. A resident can probably see hints of the neighborhood's former glory poking out here and there, but for the most part it's gone. Meanwhile, the poor areas got gentrified; housing projects got bulldozed and bright, shiny, soulless corp structures got put up in their place. These new buildings either look radically out of places, with architecture styles that clash with the rest of the skyline, or they're self-conscious recreations (a "new take") on the surrounding architecture which comes off as looking awkward.

Well said. I feel it has to do with the years it was being worked on. Shadowrun 3 is mid-90's and feels it, where as Shadowrun 4 is early 2000's and it also sadly feels it. Gone is the grit and punk of the 90's replaced instead by the sleek futurism of the 00's, and it just doesn't feel Shadowrun anymore. Our views on the future changed fundamentally so of course something like Shadowrun was going to end up getting corrupted beyond recognition.

I'm trying to set up a character with contact lenses and goggles and a few other thins with skinlink and my availability is capped at 12 to start. The problem of course is I would like to tack on a couple more things like flare compensation and low light but I'm not sure how skinlink's availability applies to the object it is being attached to. Chummer isn't much help and the 2 core books don't seem to go into it in great detail. When I asked him the GM figured the devices availability would be whichever of the 2 is higher, like contacts with skinlink having 6 availability and goggles with skinlink having 6 availability but I want to get a more concrete answer.

tl;dr

>what is the availability of goggles with skinlink and contacts with skinlink respectively

>what books in 4E can I point at to prove this to the GM?

In the Vidya, the most broken class is the mage because of blind and petrify letting you remove enemies from the fight for some turns while you overwhelm their allies. It's like changing a 4v4 into a 4v3 followed by a 4v1. Is this class also the most broken for tabletop?

I expect based on DM fiat, Netrunners Deckers could be the most broken because of how many things (doors, security alarms, files, passes, resources, etc.) could be explained as accessible via the net. Of course it's no fun if a mission goes from a smash-and-grab job to, "rest of the team watch the hacker in his chair".

The weakest class is the Adept which is appropriate because the idea of someone swinging a sword like a retarded jester as viable in a setting with grenade-launching hoverdrones is absurd.

Hoo boy, are you not going to like Harlequin when you read about him. This is Shadowrun, it's not 100% realism by any measure and a properly wired street samurai with a katana will absolutely fuck up some shit. Also vidya Shadowrun is trash except the SNES and Genesis games. HBS couldn't code their way out of a wet paper bag.

4th ed adept can put Karma into a sword for bonus rolls. the adept ability Critical strike adds 1 damage point to unarmed attacks, I am currently doing 10 BASE DV with -3 AP thanks to penetrating strike on my adept at game start.

Magic level, and therefore ranks, can be raised on adept limited only by the amount of Karma you get, every rank in Critical Strike gives 1 damage base to unarmed. "The total Force of all

bonded foci is capped at the character’s Magic x 5" so think about a melee weapon focus. The Adept isn't weak but it is a late bloomer.

> Is this class also the most broken for tabletop?

The rules might permit you to make an overpowered character, but your GM can tell you that the rulebook doesn't apply in his game. Mages are usually full of potential for overpowered combos. GMs frequently permit players to make mage characters and then get upset when the mage ruins the difficulty curve. Thus GMs tend to kill off mage characters arbitrarily. Such is the nature of tabletop.

The rules make promises to the players, and the GM often breaks those promises. This cycle of failure could be broken if someone could figure out a way to make a difficulty curve that doesn't evaporate the first time a player uses the magic rules as written.

Many gamers abandoned tabletop because they didn't enjoy spending hours of effort making characters that follow rules and having GMs revise the rules on the fly. Thus Magic: the Gathering got a lot of frustrated D&D players who were sick and tired of "rocks fall, everyone dies." Every now and again, we get hints that some campaigns actually manage to play the damn game instead of degenerating into bickering, but people who are having actual fun often fail to document their secrets and pass them on to the next generation.

In general, if you think a class is broken, try running a sample combat between two examples of that class. E.g. if you think mages are too powerful, try a mage-versus-mage combat and see how it works. I don't have much hope for the future of tabletop unless software engineers start testing tabletop rules.

Gygax had many faults, but at least he applied unscientific, empirical playtesting. Most later designers rarely playtested their rules before releasing them. I would like to see some kind of "quality assurance" process for tabletop, where people who understand software testing are allowed to test the rules. I imagine that Magic: the Gathering does some software-based testing, but I don't know.

Each role can become absolutely broken when they're allowed to use supplements meant for their career choice. Mages and Riggers standout because Mages are deliberately designed to be like that fluff wise and rules wise so any GM who allows it then backpedals was way in over his head, while Riggers are basically the most powerful non-Magic solution that can be thrown at you and a creative player can utilize with lethal efficiency that you won't immediately realize until after a player makes his own drone kill team and makes every other member of the team obsolete.

I was told that, specifically, they need a face and a decker, so I want to try to be both.

What would a decent build be for that?

I'm mostly looking to pulling "signature moves", specializing in that one good thing I can do very good.

Prime Runner option is used and I was thinking as a theme I wanted a classic yakuza/mafia type of thug that thinks technology is for nerds and only uses his deck to bully said nerds.

That sounds fine theme wise but Shadowrun punishes generalist builds. Karma is hard earned and you really have to invest in one and only dabble a little bit at most in the other, even then you'd be better served investing in handling a gun.

Unless it's 3e or earlier then the Decker isn't even in the action because he's far away so he can't even be the Face.

That's a trap.

While (in theory) it is not impossible to mesh those two and get viable character, it would require significant system mastery to make it happen and to use the build in-game. You can't do former, and even if someone does it for you, he can't help with latter.

I say, go with the face role (assuming you know the setting and will not serve yourself as a breakfast to ghouls or somesuch).

>I'm being browbeat into playing Shadowrun by my regular group, so I decided to make a Troll. The first shit I got bludgeoned with in the book was "the poor trolls are really peaceful and introspective and misunderstood because racism". I knew it was hippie shit when it was pitched to me but god damn I never knew Shadowrun was this bad from the outside. It's heavy-handed to the point of absurdity.

It's funny because in first edition they do touch upon it in a matter of fact way, boiling it down like this...orks mature earlier than humans, die earlier than humans, and Globalization causes their IQ to drop like rocks. Ork women damn near seem to get severely pregnant just making breakfast. So you have a group of humanoids with short lifespans, cognitive issues, and they're already "adult" in their very early teens...technically halfway dead by the time they are 20-25 years old. That's more or less straight pointed out as a serious problem when you place them in a society with any other metatype.

Not even talking about trolls, who have similar problems (less severe in some areas like birthrate) and also have the advantage of being walking dump trucks. Chummer might not be trying to hurt you, but that doesn't mean he won't on accident.

None if this is pointed out as muh horrid introspection back in the day outside of in-character perspective. Hell you straight up see metas acting as dicks to each other on the regular, Seattle Sourcebook early on has either an elf or dwarf complaining about how the orks shut access to the Seattle underground behind them during the Night of Rage, throwing the smooth-skins under the bus. Of course, on a grand scale, elves and dragons are the worst on paper.

In '54? Well, in general during the 50s you can do full body clones for organ replacement. I'm pretty sure boosting the bodies growth with chemicals is also a thing as per SR3 rules, if I remember the old stuff correctly (as long as you are mundane; don't try this with mages if they need parts). As far as insect spirit stuff...maybe if the clone's slow-grown that could work, not sure. Should take several months though at best. But even if the cloning was SR4-5 good, that's still pretty damn expensive. Just kidnap some loser off the streets and stick him in a pod instead, noone's gonna miss a SINless, and it's cheaper.

Well, if you recall there was a fair amount of hype after the Shadowrun PC games a few years back did well for themselves, that SR5 did not capitalize on (and in fact squandered by locking one of SR5's main plots behind a web browser game). Overall it's hard to find people anywhere who don't peg it as at the very least badly edited, something that up until that point was not something the line was known for. And that's from the people who like SR5...

But from what I read, some of the recent books have been somewhat better, we shall see. Overall I think the main problem facing Shadowrun is it really needs a "new SR2", basically an edition that is more or less better in all possible ways in comparison to the old one. But, given the last few editions, I'm not sure if that's possible. I mean keep in mind SR4 was popped out by a mix of SR3 personnel and major community members at the time working together, and that split the base up real bad. Given all the drama that's happened since then, I won't say it's impossible but it's really an uphill fight.

Monads were ended a little bit back. Basically they are going back to their home planet or something, and no one knows where the hell Fastjack is (or cares apparently). But the setting is continuing to 2080 within the established timeline. From what I understand...

>Richard Villiers is fucked from running a AAA for a time but has a shot at making a comeback if he gives Johnny Spinrad the big slot

>Ares is increasingly a basket case and appears to be half taken over by bug spirits (seems to be a callback to a late SR3 plot where it was revealed they were experimenting on them), looks like some more shit in Chi-town is going down again with military people

>a Jackpoint regular found the Bridge by diving into a fovae in Aztlan and also not dying somehow, and someone's been fixing it...also that one locus has self-repaired after the YOTC mana spike

There's probably some other shit but that's what I remember off the top of my head.

I'm hearing something about "making things easier to understand" but have any mechanics been posted anywhere?

Looking at a few posts by some people elsewhere, since I don't have time right now to go though a huge breakdown of the changes, it looks like...

A) It's still a fixed TN system like SR4 and SR5 (ie a 5 or 6 = success).

B) Limits are gone.

C) Edge is being reworked into something that will eliminate table bloat.

D) Skill list has been culled (so, for example Firearms returns to replace individual gun skills).

E) BBB is 250 pages + 50 for gear.

F) Initiative is being reworked, sounds like it's not in favor of Wired Reflex fiends.

G) Complete magic system overhaul; modular spell effects, Force is eliminated. Core magic expansion will have a lot of additional shit regarding this.

H) Matrix revised...AGAIN for the fifth or sixth time (who's counting anymore?). Seems the goal is "bin most of the rules, make datajacks (renamed to cyberjacks) the defensive component and cyberdecks the offensive component".

I) Core chargen will use Priority. Availability rules will be more SR1-like (ie: if you can afford it you can get it before the start of the game).

J) "No Future" is both the last SR5 book and the first SR6 book; it's basically the 2080 edition of the NAGRL/Sprawl Survival Guide.

I'll hazard a guess that SR4 fans will probably be happy, if nothing else comes of it.

A few other observations: SR6 has been in development since 2017-ish (talk about a tacit admission that SR5 was a bust). Also there was apparently an active attempt to make technomancers not be garbage, but how or if that has been achieved remains to be seen.

That's good that it's over with now, the whole premise that you're supposed to care about body snatchers is just absurd.

It's a shame about SR5, at least in my opinion. It's been a great tool for me to help get friends into Shadowrun. It's a starter drug, basically.

It has it's issues, don't get me wrong, but I don't hate it.

>crew has to get to the undercity from the overcity
