/monster/ vs /tg/ both had intent to name Guts to their roster for the Cup. As a gentleman's agreement, it was decided that a wrestling tournament would decide who earns the right to field Guts on their squad.

Each board will name 16 wrestlers to represent them in the tournament. The 32 combatants will then face off in the Squared Circle on July 19th at https://cytu.be/r/8chMonsterFedWrestling to determine the winner. >>>/8cup/3182 will hold each board's nominations.

How do you work out the stands? Seeing how there's such a wide array of abilities in the original work, it seems pretty hard to work out new ones that will be consistently useful without being too OP or recycling old stands. Oh shit, the wall of text.

Best formula I've ever had for my campaigns.

1. Railroad an intro, based on an element you want to exploit, a genre you want to use, an enemy they want to defeat, a catastrophe they need to prevent.

2. At the end of the intro, have hints on how PCs can achieve the goal. Path they can choose but don't need to. Make the railroad a road system, if you will, with possibilities to go off road.

3. Have generic enemies ready (wolves, highwaymen, undead, insects, cultists...) you can easily flavor and send their way.

4. Watch them go and provide the input they need. Once in a while, introduce new elements. Watch what stick kn what they find and how the theorize and use that. Distract them with sidequests and obstacles.

Other tricks:

> Don't plan too much in advance.

Whole cities of Shroedinger. It is okay if a town has and has not a mages' guild until the knfo is relevant.

> Go 3Ys deep.

Both for lore deepness and sidequest potential, when choosing an element for your bg, ask yourself why that is. Do the same with the reason and the reason's reason. It provides depth, solidity and encourage creativity.

> Use anything and everything players give you.

Family ties are not kidnap material until other PCs met them and grew attached to them. If PCs have grudges, turns out the target of that grudge is an element of your plot. And if they like or like to hate an NPC, re-use it.

What's more satisfying in a tabletop RPG than creating a community out of the people you've helped? Getting to that section where you've got enough power to start affecting lots of NPCs and have sway on the setting is something really special to me, since it offers opportunities for for continuity that feel a lot more personal and meaningful than in other mediums. Even if they're all fake people, it's weirdly satisfying to improve their lives on the micro and macro level over years of adventures and effort. Is there anything like it short of completing a campaign?

It's been a while since we last talked about this game.

>So what's Cyberpunk 2020?

Second edition of the Cyberpunk game line by R. Talsorian Games. They also made Mekton (universal system for mecha games, very flexible but a nightmare to develop a character for) and Teenagers From Outer Space (the first universal system for anime-based games). It is a distilled version of the original, Cyberpunk 2013. Cybergeneration does not exist. Cyberpunk V3 does not exist.

>So how is this different from Shadowrun?

No magic, spirits or Native American bullshit. Cyberpunk 2020 is 100% cyberpunk, 0% bullshit. High tech, low lives. If you want a pure, Gibsonean romp of megacorps, antihero protagonists, distopia, more cyberware than you can shake your cyber-dick at (Mr. Studd Sexual Implant: All night, every night, and she'll never know) and a small drop of Mad Max outside of the megacities, then this is the game for you.

>How does it play?

A simple system of Attribute + Skill + 1d10. D6es are used in some occations, so keep those handy as well. The game is not grid-based, but it does use maps. Players have "roles", rough classes with access to a mix of skills. Some include Solos (the street samurai with the biggest guns), Rockerboys (musicians/political agitators), Techies (grease monkeys), Medias (intrepid reporters), Corporates (the guys working for the Megacorps), Fixers (the guys on the street), Nomads (the aforementioned Mad Max expies) and more. Each have a special ability pertaining to their role: Medias get credibility for their stories, Techies can jury rig things, Corporates get access to corporate resources and so on.

Now, the game is not very balanced as is. Upon character creation you get a fuckton of points to spend, with you being able to max out certain stats with ease without gimping your character in other stats. Reflexes are imperative when wanting to be good in a firefight, Body Type allows you to tank quite a bit of damage, Intelligence flat-out gives you more points to start with and Empathy allows for more cybertech to upgrade yourself with without turning into a Cyberpsycho Post too long. Considering the levels of insanity and degeneracy of Night City, I'd say very likely, but still something you don't see everyday. Fuck, even nowadays, depending on how big your city is and where you go, you can see people cosplaying on casual days. Considering biosculpting in the future is both very cheap and common, and that people kind of expect to die two weeks from now (average life expectance in Night City was 40 years old, IIRC), I would rule Naruto runners with implanted headbands to be relatively common.

What do you lads think of the martial arts system?

I'm a martial arts fag and half of the styles they have are either useless or too circumstancial, and the other half are missing bonuses, or have bonuses where they shouldn't, or they just don't make sense.

There are only a few martial arts that will actually teach you how to fight, and then usually only one dimension of fighting (striking, grappling).

>boxing

>muay thai

>savate

>brazillian jiujitsu

>wrestling

>sambo

The rest just teach you fancy moves that are only useful when you already know how to fight (throws, holds, wrist-locks, stylish kicks and strikes).

>aikido

>kung fu

>capoeira

>judo

>tae kwon do

>wing chun

>karate

>tai chi

Some of them are complete meme martial arts, which I'm actually okay with because they're made up, so they can be as effective or as ineffective as your setting warrants (Gun-Fu, Arasaka-Te, Panzerfaust). But the rest should at least reflect how they're actually used, and how useful they are. Ninjutsu shouldn't even be there, or should at least be its own skill entirely, since its focus is on espionage techniques, and close-combat is a last resort. Jeet Kune Do, similarly, shouldn't be there as it's more of a fighting philosophy than a concrete style. People who claim to practice it are more akin to traditional Kung Fu practitioners. Sumo doesn't even pretend to be a fighting style so I'm not sure why it's on this list.

Choi Li Fut, Koppo, Te and Thamoc I've never heard of, but I'd wager they are either useless, or go in the "fancy moves that are only useful when you know how to fight" category.

Why does this matter? If you're a fighter, or you watch any fighting, you'd know that any good fighter has a foundation of a striking and grappling martial art, usually boxing/muPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

the first thing you've got to understand about CP2020's martial arts is that they're there to serve the same function as everything else: kick ass and look stylish doing so

so when a given martial art is mired in style over substance in reality, it's serving its function in the game perfectly

the same for meme-tier martial arts

for expanded and reworked rules, consider the Interlock Unlimited martial arts supplement (attached file)

as for the stat discrepancy between two arts of the same IP cost, consider what else an art gives you instead of focusing on just one aspect of it. Tae Kwon Do may give you less kick, but Muay Thai doesn't give you any block or sweep

 No.423971

>>423966

You make a good point. Style over substance. For that reason alone you can justify the existence of each martial art in the game, however I still maintain that the bonuses need a reworking.

I'll focus on Tae Kwon Do and Muay Thai specifically.

My example was bad because looking at it again, TKD is the obvious better choice. Each art gives you punch, kick and block. TKD however gives you sweep and dodge, and the art only costs 3 points. MT gives you grapple but costs 4 points.

In reality, TKD should give you punch (but a low bonus), kick, sweep and dodge. I've seen TKD fights and they rarely block, and never have to worry about low kicks.

MT should give you punch, kick, sweep, block and grapple. It should also allow you to "punch" and "kick" in grabbing range to simulate knees/elbows. It should also take away that grapple bonus if the fight ever goes to the ground.

TKD should also give the higher kick bonus, but be more difficult to learn, and have some unique kicks. E.g. the wheel kick (high damage but leaves you open). Or the stepping back-kick (high damage, can be made from casting range).

MT should give lower bonuses to punching than boxing, and lower bonuses to kick than TKD, but be easier to learn, to reflect the fact that they focus on power.

But this is just my autism talking. Thanks for the book, looks good.

Why do most combat spells take only one standard action to cast? Why don't they need to be drawn and held like weapons first?

For example, if you want a cast a flame bolt spell, you would take an action to draw a magical flame into your hand, then another action to attack with it, or a full-round action to do both. By using a higher-tier spell slot, you would have more "ammo" per spell. It makes logical sense, it's not complicated, and it might slow down caster supremacy a little bit.

Because WoW edition is... simplified.

AD&D2 got lots of combat spells that work in ways very different from "fireball of a different shape and color".

Also, many spells create either semi-autonomous attack constructs that can be commanded or temporary weapons that need to be wielded or thrown.

I started playing it a week ago myself, it's an amazing game yet very underplayed.

I did notice some die-hard MtG guys at my LGS playing Keyforge before the draft/pre-release/standard event started, and I've only heard positive things about it from other people.

The rulings are still a bit vague to me at times, but it has an amazing amount of depth to it.

To start the thread, I always had a weird feeling about the Archimedes ruling that if you boardwipe with him in the middle all creatures get archived except himself.

The rulings however state that all damage is dealt simultaneously, so logically I'd say that no other creatures becomes his neighbor.

I started playing about 2 years ago, but bob in and out of Go frenzies and burnout breaks that last months. As such I'm only about 21-18 kyu. The Theros block in MTG, sepcifically the sets Theros and Born of the Gods had some autopilot decks like "challenge the hydra" and "challenge the minotaur horde." Each one flipped a card each turn, then played a certain number of other cards from the deck or did other actions depending on what it flipped.

Just ask some of your coworkers to play, dude. You can have a fun TTRPG session with literally one other person.

Im the kind of guy who like to really immerse my players in stuff. Local customs, flags, holidays, etc. One thing i realized was that the idea of the "gold" was fundamentally flawed as a concept. Different nations have different currencies and the exchange rates are never really 1x1. This has to do with the purity of the currency exchanged, convenience of use, among other things. So if you travel to a different nation why should they take your gold, and more importantly why should they take it at face value?

>its just a game and players dont want to perform algebraic equations

thats fair in all honesty and for very casual games i wouldnt suggest this. It detracts from the actual gameplay and doesnt add anything in terms of story or experience. However if you run a game where you treat players differently based on their race then why not treat their money the same way? congratulations you found 1,000 gold in the goblin's lair but its all goblin gold which is really lumpy and impure gold. In reality its worth more like 100 gold

Any DM's have experience in this kind of thing? also any amateur economists want to weigh in on this and answer me a question?

>what would happen if you injected a massive amount of money into an economy only for a curse to make it all disappear? Obviously a depression but which would be worse? the rampant inflation or the depression from it all vanishing?

Just say the loot found is worth 1000 of a noteworthy country's currency and they'll get roughly that pretty much anywhere. Exchange rates are like taxes: They seem like an interesting idea, but making the PCs deal with them is really just a pain in the ass.

The problem is that D&D prices generally are not particularly reliable. Here are a few quick resources that you can eye-ball for private research:

http://medieval.ucdavis.edu/120D/Money.html

http://www.medievalcoinage.com/prices/medievalprices.htm

https://economics.utoronto.ca/munro5/SPICES1.htm

It's not medieval, but since D&D assumes a highly Americanized version of fantasy setting, the material here can probably be applied to give you a rough idea:

https://www.measuringworth.com/slavery.php

I can't help much for medieval slave values, since it's not a thing that's come up yet in my own world-setting.

In terms of keeping kids as slaves or whatever - Yes, slavery is in fact inefficient. Slavery was something ingrained into what people considered "normal" for most of history, but even from the start, paying market-derived wages would always have been the more economically efficient solution - something which contributes to why there's some truth to the saying that the relative quality of life for a slave in ancient Greece might have been higher than a modern work (though absolute quality of life is of course still lower). The biggest factor is that slavery is a large up-front cost, which is always an inferior option to long-term payments, unless the economy is for some reason shrinking over time. This can be mitigated when you capture your own slaves. It's also a non-factor for sex trafficking - this is a large part of the reason why, in the modern world, most of our modern-day slavery is either people tricked into working for the human trafficking ring directly, or human sex trafficking, rather than sales for hard labor.

Not too much experience with boardgames here but if you want to make an interesting economy you could link the value of coins to bullion by the prosperity and economy of different cities/nations with different coinage.

Bigger, richer cities/nations with good economies would mint coins with more gold, whereas poorer nations would add other metals.

If you could create a system with a fluid economy the coins could go up and down in value (against bullion) every decade or so, making for an interesting economy.

That said, your goblin gold could be very resourceful as a lower-standard gold bullion seeing as they are impure lumps of gold in your case, having a fixed price against bullion.

Heck, a system where an experienced part member and/or a guy you helped out on a quest could melt it all down into pure bullion would also make it more interesting.

Do note that if you work this much with gold, remember to account for inflation, for example a whole lot of gold got available to an already rich nation, making the price of their goods more expensive as more gold coins get circulated within that nation.

This could happen if your party keeps on trading with a poor city-state with high-purity gold coins or bullions, after a while the city-state gets richer thus the prices go up.

Alright /tg/, somewhat new player here, looking for some ideas on what I could do with an item.

My character, a level 6 Dragonborn Paladin, has a vial of dragon blood and a dragon's heart, both of which were obtained from a young green dragon (Lost Mines of Phandelver). My character lives in Neverwinter, but is going on an adventure for the CoS campaign.

Point is, I was wondering, what use could I have for a vial of dragon blood and a dragon heart? I was thinking I could have someone forge them into a shield or armor to make them even stronger, but would that work?

Thoughts? Advice?

If nothing else, you could always sell both. I would imagine that an alchemist would pay a good price for a vial of dragon's blood, if not a heart.

As my current campaigns draw to a close, I am considering what to do next as a GM. I have been running Pathfinder for years and I am sick of it. I run games on the weekends. I will continue to do so but I am somewhat interested in trying to run an "open table" game at my FLGS.

I've become quite enamored of OSR D&D and have begun condensing the B/X rules to fit what I want for my setting. I plan to make a hexcrawl. I've considered several premises for this hexcrawl. One would be a simple frontier world, a small points-of-light setting with some towns here and there. Another would be a more complete setting with several small human kingdoms as well as multiple monstrous realms where such tyrants as the Troll King lord over their minions. A third would be a colony land, where after a black plague many people have set out on ships as the plague wipes out the old world, and in the new world find ruins of an ancient civilization as well as natives.

The main criterion for deciding between the three is the idea that this campaign will be part of an ongoing narrative. The first D&D campaign I ran went on for 8 years and I had planned for the next campaign to continue years after, in the world the old characters had changed and become rulers of. But that didn't happen and I thirst for something like that. Part of the reason I abandoned it is because the setting was something I had created as a teenager. It wasn't bad, but it was underdeveloped and didn't have the flavor I wanted from it.

One of my issues with B/X is that I like to use figurines for combat and B/X does not heavily rely on that. I suppose I could introduce rules for flanking and maneuvering, in fact I could lift them straight from 5e or D&D 3.5. I am not sure this is a good idea, though.

I am also not sure if it is a good idea to do an open table game at all. West Marches is a cool idea but I have done a practice game with it in Savage Worlds and while enjoyable it just doesn't feel engaging. Perhaps because Savage Worlds is incredibly easy so they just slaughter everything. Or maybe because without consistent attendance and a campaign focused on exploration, there isn't much in the way of story. I intend to change that byPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

>I have no idea why plate armor is so cheap in B/X when I think it should be something you don't get until at least level 4 or 5, but that's just me.

This is a hold-over from OD&D. In OD&D, your AC and Movement are directly more or less directly correlated:

AC 9 = 15" // AC 7 = 12" // AC 5 = 9" // AC 3 = 6"

Mail and Plate have the same move class in my games, so I have Plate cost a lot more (B/X equivalent: 1000gp) - it is, after all, a general improvement, held back primarily by the fact you die like a bitch if you fall in a 20ft pit of water.

https://wmusswtwbf.wordpress.com/2019/02/23/gronans-guide-to-gaming/

The stuff from/on Mike Mornard is excellent for getting an idea of what made the original games "tick" so much for people. It's a bit of a system shock from modern games, but it's a worthwhile one.

Those were good reads, thanks. I'm already fairly familiar with OSR mentality, I've played a bit of B/X, but only as a 1v1 where I controlled a party of 4 characters.

That makes sense. I've never been able to find the swimming rules, but I might make up my own, in that if you are in platemail you need to make a 5+ on a d6 to be able to keep your head above water.
