This is probably the best film MTV has ever produced. I came in with no expectations except that it made me feel uncomfortable to watch as a kid. Alexander Payne deserves more recognition for his work.

Has anyone read the novel?

Based on the list I'm inclined to agree, sight unseen. Payne seems like the most competent film director in the bunch. In fact it's a little odd that he'd be involved with an MTV project at all.

I feel like in 1999 mtv still had a shred of credibility, I bet Payne saw it as an opportunity to not only get the movie made, but have the mtv marketing juggernaut behind his project as well.

I haven't seen pootie tang or black dynamite, someone should ask cucktino. He knows everything there is to know about bbcs, blacksploitation and i haets witey.

Thanks. I just watched that. This rip isn't perfect (some low-bitrate color distortion) but it's clearly better than the earlier one.

It's hard to say why it's not easier to find. The film is based on a Dostoyevsky story so it works well. One minor complaint is the robotic acting.

What else do people like from Robert Bresson?

They're a modern day Triumph des Willens when it comes to the kind of influence they're going to have on film. The sound, editing, framing, etc. is all very distinct even as the video directors are obviously trying to imitate video games and Hollywood. I think the reason the ISIS videos are so striking is because they have such a unique subject matter and viewpoint.

You can bet your ass that film makers are going to be stealing shots from ISIS videos for decades to come.

There's a decent collection of ISIS vids over on >>>/islamicstate/ iirc

With Easter and Passover this week, it's an opportune time to think about cinematic depictions of faith and religion. The film to spur the discussion is Cecil B. DeMille's silent account of the adult life of Jesus Christ.

> In a genre that deserves the best that artists can offer but is too often plagued by mediocrity, DeMille's flawed but powerful The King of Kings remains one of Hollywood’s most remarkable achievements. ~~ Decent Films

> Whether you’re religious or not, King of Kings is a monumental technical achievement of its era. Most notable are its impressive cinematography, ghostly special effects which must have been shocking in its day, and the appearance of an early form of color in two of its scenes — a two-strip Technicolor predecessor that remains one of few uses of color in a silent film. ~~ AMC Movie Guide

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0018054/reference
http://ladailymirror.com/2011/09/27/louis-adamic-cecil-b-demille-movie-evangelist/

In addition to discussing The King of Kings, I think we should broaden the scope to evaluate other portrayals of religion onscreen. Do religious films face unique challenges that other films do not? What positive and negative traits stand out in the films you've seen? Is there a tradeoff between the sacred and the entertaining?

I feel like I don't really get what you're trying to accomplish cinematically. The content and theme is good but as a film collage I find it pretty uninteresting.

The music clashes with the editing. The former even with the repetitive electronic beat has a dreamy overtone to it which the latter fails to capture. Take away the music and it's still aesthetically unaffecting.

ITT: Request certain premises, concepts and etc. that you'd like to see in a film, and others will suggest films fitting, or similar to, those ideas.

I'd like to see more Muay Thai related film, but stuff that's not just about the fighting; With actual drama going on, with the fights being sort of a glue holding it together. OGF was the closest to this I found, but I wish there was more fighting throughout, not necessarily just for the sake of having an action scene, but to pose a setting in which further exposition could be presented and to make a cohesive pattern out of the few fight scenes that are actually there, so they don't feel so sudden.

Got the older rip, decent giallo, the good thing about it was the atmosphere, created by that location in the old, partially ruined theatre, I've come to enjoy things like nonsensical plot, gratuitous nudity and poor dubbing/acting of those movies, it's all part of their charm.

But as it turns out that other one The Clown at Midnight was the one I was looking for. I have no idea why was it in Italian when I saw it as a boy, since it's Canadian. The poor image quality of my TV probably lead me to believe than it was older than it actually was. But I watched bits and pieces, and it looked so beyond terrible that my urge to rewatch it has disappeared completely. Thanks man.

That makes me wonder - has there been serious fighting films based on the strip mall martial arts that they teach to 8 year olds? I don't know much about the different fighting styles but I've never heard of a Tae Kwon Do action movie (for example). I get the feeling that it's not as "tough" or complicated as other techniques?

I'm trying to get a friend of mine into patrician films, I told him we'd watch Werckmeister Harmonies but I want him to see it in good quality and he doesn't have a KG account or anything... I remember we streamed a couple of films back in the film club days, can anyone tell me how to do that? What's a good site? ty

Did you have time to see anything else from Rivette before watching this one?

I've seen a handful from him at random, not following ratings or guides, and it was all pretty impressive/distinctive in different ways.

Your impression of OUT reminds me a little of Celine and Julie, which seemed like it was going to be aimlessly long and uneventful. But the more I watched the more I was sucked into it.

I just watched Paris Belongs to Us to see how Rivette got started.

It begins as a typical drama about a group of young artists in the city. Sometimes these sorts of movies can be a little dry if nothing much happens.

However this story adds an interesting dimension with noirish elements of paranoia, mystery and fatalism. The result lies somewhere between Cassavetes and Kiss Me Deadly. A solid first feature.

Now I'm interested to read some of Rivette's writing for Cahiers... I don't suppose anyone has a recommendation?

Hi /film/. I've been thinking about starting a film blog, which I've done a few times before but I always give up on it. This time I'm going to try to be more committed to it, and as most people here seem to watch good movies and have interesting thoughts on them, I thought it might be kind of cool to reach out to you guys and see if anyone was interested in contributing some film writing.

I don't have any specific angle in mind, I was probably just going to write a few hundred words on whatever movies I've been watching recently, but I would be open to more structured ideas for recurring columns (i.e. a column covering all the Zatoichi movies or films of a certain director or country, whatever). I would also be open to making the whole thing more focused if anyone would be interested, one potential idea I had was covering "New Waves" of various countries. But I'll see what everyone wants to do.

As long as the writing is thoughtful and interesting I don't really care what the movies are, only restriction would be none of the really mainstream Hollywood stuff like Star Wars and Superhero movies, but I doubt anyone would want to write about that anyway. I don't expect this to go anywhere but I think it could be fun. If any of you are interested, let me know, I'm flexible and open to suggestions. Here's the initial site I made, subject to change: https://moviesfilmscinemablog.wordpress.com/

I just want to make something. I see a lot of good discussion about movies on this board and I feel like with just a little bit of polish and effort people could turn their thoughts into something readable that can escape the insularity of the board and be visible to more people and maybe inspire them to watch something different, or think of the things they have watched in a different way.

Thanks, I plan to keep writing stuff and putting it up and hopefully other people will get on board soon enough

This has to be one of Franco Nero's best roles and one of the best Italian cop movies. The genre is often pulpy and violent but Confessions of a Police Captain is less action and more brooding. The film gives a cynical critique of Italian society and the complex web of corruption that dominates it.

Saw this last night, a rare and long forgotten piece of American independent cinema. It's main value is ethnographic, providing a realistic depiction of impoverished rural American, and is really the only thing that kept me awake through the amateurish editing and pacing, as well as some rare moments of solid cinematography.

Finally watched The Fountain.

Great movie, almost cried.

When you make a movie about life you have to touch death, and this movie really touched it, in almost every possible way. Its sad that the criticism I see for this movie is more about hur dur trees cannot live outside in space, instead of actually taking the meaning in.

Anyone on /tv/ attending? I was thinking about going this year, but decided next year would be better so my buddy can come with.

Which movies are you most excited about? Which movies are getting positive buzz? Which one will be the crown jewel?

Discuss all things Sundance and Robert Redford.

The ones I'm interested in so far:

>Goat (frat-hazing drama featuring Nick Jonas)

>Other People (black comedy featuring Jesse Plemmons and Molly Shannon)

>Manchester by the Sea (community/family drama featuring my boy Kyle Chandler; also Casey Affleck)

>Christine (Rebecca Hall plays an anchor who an heroes on a live broadcast)

I'm really rooting for Rebecca Hall. She's a very underrated actress who has never relied on looks to get a role. Then again, I'll always root for a movie to be good—it's a win for the fans of the medium.

I have no answers, only more questions.

Was Sundance "better" before so many movie stars started showing up?

Are there any independent studios left? Most "indie films" seem to come from branches of large established Hollywood studios with names like "Sony Pictures Classics".

And what is the best film festival in the US ... this or New York Film Festival or something else?

> Filmmaker Eddie Alcazar and musician Flying Lotus have been traveling the festival circuit with their disturbing and mesmerizing short film, "FUCKKKYOUUU," which most recently made waves at a sold out screening at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Flying Lotus, whose music provides the short with an unnervingly hypnotic score, just premiered the entire short film online via YouTube, and it's sure to be one of the most beautifully nightmarish pieces of cinema you'll see all week.

Hey, /film/, this is basically the only internet community on film that I enjoy visiting, maybe you guys can give me feedback on the short film I made recently. It was made with zero budget and I was the only crew, so don't expect too much. But I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, other than not having a tripod/steadicam.

OP here, I doubt anyone cares, but I'm in the middle of editing a proper short, 20-30 mins, with a script, multiple actors, sound, etc... But in the mean time, I made another dumb little short with a friend. Here it is:

Also, its best watched with headphones because I've found the soundtrack is too bassy/low for my computer speakers and ends up inaudible
