Hey, /film/, this is basically the only internet community on film that I enjoy visiting, maybe you guys can give me feedback on the short film I made recently. It was made with zero budget and I was the only crew, so don't expect too much. But I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, other than not having a tripod/steadicam.
Here it is: https://vimeo.com/138888895

….What a comfy bed….Is that the Space Needle?….That looks like me on sundays…..A Suicide note?….Christmas man? What did he saying?….That's why you don't take a bunch of pills and down them with alcohol….
That was ok. Very easy to undestand what was happening in most part of the short except the part with Christmas lights man. An Hallucination caused by a failed suicide attempt? Just a comforting dream?
Keep making films, I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for sharing, where do you draw your inspiration from?
I could only watch the first 3 minutes I'll check the rest out later. I will say from what I've seen there is a lot of lingering shots that are pretty static. Maybe there's a purpose behind it I'll find out when I watch.

Hey, thanks for the feedback. The exact nature of the Christmas lights guy part is supposed to be unclear, as much as that sounds like a cop-out I think it works better that way than over-explaining it, the whole thing is meant to be dream-like anyway.
>>5666
thanks for watching! I draw inspiration from a lot of places, I've been reading a lot of Borges lately and also just finished The Invention of Morel so that's been on my mind, and I've been watching a lot of films by Tsai Ming-Liang and Lav Diaz which may have influenced my decision to have so many static shots, although if you finish watching it is also to provide contrast.

The Invention of Morel? Isn't that one written by his friend Adolfo Bioy Casares?
And I thought that you were inspired by Philip K. Dick when Christmas Lights man appeared.

That's the one. I haven't actually read any Dick but I have seen many of the film adaptations of his books so it could certainly be a subconscious influence. Actually now that I think about it, I was definitely inspired by the scene in A Scanner Darkly when the alien thing reads the list of sins to that one guy committing suicide, I forgot that was one of the original catalysts for my film haha, thanks for reminding me

Cool, thanks for posting this. At least /film/ isn't one of the places pushing people over the edge (yet).
I couldn't make out every word of the visitor, but he said exactly what I was thinking. I liked the sequence that followed. Great visual collage and music.
Speaking of The Invention of Morel, has anyone seen either the French or Italian film adaptations? I planned to watch one or both of them.

I heard that the Italian version is as good as the book.
And talking about Argetinian writers. Have you ever read a work by Julio Cortazar?

You should start with his short stories collected in Bestiario, Las armas Secretas and Final del Juego and then read the novel, Rayuela, But that one is a very challenging and interesting read.

I have not read him but I'll keep an eye out for his works. I did go to that Montparnasse cemetery in Paris where he's buried (along with Chopin, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison). I just didn't know who he was at the time…

I just finished your short, it was a little slow paced I realize you were maybe going for a somber tone but the slow pacing drew me away a bit, specifically the first half. I feel like that could have been tweaked more. I like the bleak ending and I love the title screen, the head being cut off by the frame and the silhouette in front of the window. It's good. The shots are mostly kind of flat which might've added to my pacing problem but overall it was an interesting look into depression. I thought the light man was trippy as fuck. Keep it up dude good to see another striving film maker.

I actually like the quality of the footage whether its intentional or not, it reminds me of the way that Lav Diaz's earlier films looked. It looks like that was fun to make. I liked the bits of humor and the Wilhelm Scream.
If I were producer I'd say tighten up the editing on some of the sequences. For example when the title came up I forgot that we were still in the credits.

Hey thanks for checking it out! It was our first "legitimate" project. I say that because we actually had a script, did multiple takes and took it fairly seriously as apposed to when we were kids just shooting random shit. I learned a lot making it and this winter I feel our next project will be far better. I agree with you the editing could be tightened, that's mostly due to no storyboard so the shots were on the fly and that caused problems for me in post; so storyboarding is a must.

I hadn't even thought about storyboarding (and probably wouldn't have done it either) but I agree it would help ensure strong sequences in the final product.
Regardless it's great that you took on a creative challenge and saw it through to the end.

idk, some nice images, but this is basically one step above home video. if you're going for like a Mekas thing you still need to do something more with this. what's the idea, you know? your thing in OP is your best imo because you have an actual narrative, a clearly identifiable idea giving the thing its being. i understand the joy of just shooting random stuff out and about, lots of things to look at and they're all beautiful, but you either need to up your edit game to make it more poignant (seriously watch Mekas' Diaries, Notes and Sketches if you haven't) or you need to focus more on narrative to have something really worth watching (imo of course if you really do have a specific thing you're trying to do with this, keep on, i just don't see it)

Thanks for watching and giving thoughtful feedback. Mekas is definitely an inspiration, and I value a lot of his methods and films, although with this one I was more thinking of Sans Soleil and Chris Marker in general, and the idea of taking "documentary" travel footage and recontextualizing it within a fictional framework. The fictional framework in this one is particularly loose, but what I was trying to get across with the beginning and the drawing/animation aspect was to present the idea of memory and time being created and controlled, the idea of film and editing as creating a new highly subjective world from pieces of our own world, etc. The book that was on the table in the video, The Invention of Morel, deals with similar themes. I was also drawing from the work of Jose Luis Guerin, especially the short film of his which I stole the song and title from, Souvenir (viewable here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VAucUcwWXg).
I could go on and on in more detail but I think the more I explain the less interesting it would be. But basically, all of this is to say that I did have more going on in my mind in ideas-wise than just a home video but I understand that it might not come across that way to other viewers who aren't me haha.

I don't mind watching a brief travelogue mood piece. This was more complex than the previous two.
The other commenter has some good ideas to take it farther. It depends how much you're trying to do -- to experiment with the creative process, or to make something definitive (if that makes sense).
