I've been really obsessed with Douglas Sirk and the lineage of directors he influenced. Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Pedro Almodóvar and Todd Haynes specifically. Could someone recommend some modern or classic melodramas or comedies with strong colors, aesthetics similar to 50's Hollywood and central female characters? This can also be gen. discussion thread for Sirk and his style.

I really like Sirk too. The films can be so artificial yet vivid it's like peeking into another dimension. And the critical (over?)analysis is pretty entertaining itself, obsessing over weird sexual subtexts that start to jump out at you.

I was surprised to hear about the tragedy of Sirk's early life in Germany – and especially right after he left the country. His son stayed behind to be part of the Hitler Youth, then an actor in Veit Harlan propaganda films, and finally he was sent to the Russian front where he was killed. A few years later the boy's mother killed herself.

John Stahl is said to be an early influence on Sirk.

Have you already gone though all of Sirk's Hollywood output? I think it's hard to beat his Technicolor films.
I wish more contemporary films used the same type of color palette, but I don't know how difficult it would be to faithfully duplicate it.

Yep, that's a great suggestion. The mood, story – and even the title – are about as close to Sirk as anything I've seen from the classic era.

Has anyone seen the original Magnificent Obsession?

Perhaps it's not a pure soap opera, but try Pandora and the Flying Dutchman. It's got a Powell/Pressburger feel because Jack Cardiff filmed it.

I've seen more black and white "women's films" than color melodramas. Do any grills post here btw? It depends how strictly you define this category, I can recommend these:

Jezebel

The Snake Pit

All About Eve

Queen Christina

The Good Earth

Wuthering Heights

The Letter

The Little Foxes

Mrs. Miniver

Gaslight

Brief Encounter

Letter From an Unknown Woman

Mrs. Miniver was an interesting piece of wartime propaganda but I don't know if it counts as 'melodrama'.

Mankiewicz and Ophüls are good picks though.

The Good Earth could be a stretch too (but everyone should see it anyway)

I forgot about Ida Lupino, particularly Outrage (1950) but I think she made a few others that would also qualify.

I like what Sirk says to close out this clip:

Also, there's a new video essay called "The Vanity Tables of Douglas Sirk"

Has anyone seen it?

it's pretty interesting if you can filter out some of the narrator's cringey male feminism
