If it's okay for me to just beg here, what are some films involving alien space? I might be okay with their being a bit lowbrow - perhaps I can't expect every recommendation to be Stalker or Solaris, but then I'm not exactly looking for something of a human philosophical space, anyway: The thing is that I wish to see a world fundamentally unlike our own (or fundamentally unlike what we would see to have made our own, anyway) rendered as vividly - as coherently - as possible. Think cosmic horror, perhaps.

Have you seen Jodorowsky's Dune? It's a very cool recent documentary about a failed (but possibly epic) adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel. You can pick up a few nice recommendations from it too. Alien is pretty obvious but Dark Star is often overlooked.

A great widescreen Technicolor sci-fi with pioneering electronic sound design is Forbidden Planet. You might as well watch the French animated classic Fantastic Planet too.

Silent Running is a hippie space movie directed by acclaimed SFX artist Douglas Trumbull. It's a little dated but still worth a viewing.

Maybe you already know about these, but they're a few basics that came to mind. I'll try to add some less obvious names later.

It's hard to get a more lowbrow view of alien space than Gayniggers from Outer Space, a classic cross-cultural documentary on human relations. Similar in quality is the masterfully-directed Garzey's Wing, notable for its high-quality English dub and deep storyline told through distinctly Japanese cinematography instead of expository dialogue.

> Kin-Dza-Dza

Many creators who try to pressure the viewer into emotions with blatant drama and special effects should weep when they see it.

Also, while being /film/ material on the West, it is one of the most watched movies of general public in ex-USSR area.
