>incident

The seriousness of movie accidents is overstated. Individuals perish, art is forever. I'm kidding, but labor's a lot more likely to die building a house than they are doing wild stunts. I think it's only a juicy topic because death by Hollywood puts the whole entertainment complex to blame, implicating all of us in the audience with red hands. Fittingly melodramatic.

OP has a good point. More interesting than bloody gossip is Rossellini describing seeing his actors as furniture.

Much like other things, the behaviour of an auteur genius can very easily be mistaken for the work of a complete incompetent without looking at the final product. I wouldn't encourage this kind of thing unless the actors thought it was worth it.

I think it could be a good idea to start this board off with some OC, what do you think?

I've made this, it's a work in progress and I think it should be a group endeavor to include the most diverse tastes, so if you think something should be edited/added/removed feel free to contribute.

I've also made a template if someone else feels like making their own grid (I'm also looking for suggestions on other themes), you can download it here:
http://www26.zippyshare.com/v/2717201/file.html

It's very easy to edit: I've grouped the titles and the posters together, to add a poster (or a screenshot if the latter is not available) simply copy the image, select the grey rectangle with magic wand and paste into (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V) so you don't have to worry about them being aligned.

Fassbinder on Melodrama:

-EFFI BRIEST

-MARTHA

-FEAR OF FEAR

Fassbinder on Terror

-Mother Küsters Goes to Heaven

-The Third Generation

Fassbinder on Society

-Katzelmacher

-Chinese Roulette

-Satan's Brew

Fassbinder: The Gangster Films

-Love is Colder Than Death

-Gods Of the Plague

-The American Soldier

and The Merchant of four seasons

Haven't touched his stuff before, but heard it was worth it-

I've approached entry and mid level art house films by country- I started with Japan (Kurosawa/Ozu/Nakagawa) now I'm heading down German way hence the purchase

Well firstly there is a small part of me thats intrigued by Werner himself, I find his destructive lifestyle interesting and I want to know more about hime through his films

But the main reason is the availability of films here in Australia is trash. Obtaining this stuff legally is hard to do, our main outlet is Madman Entertainment who provide a lot of great stuff but it's no where near as expansive as say the criterion collection. So i figure the more support I can give to fuel their expansion the better.

On top of that I pirated a lot of stuff and I feel like making amends.

The one i picked from the library is 110min, i think criterion's is 116min and Wikipedia mentions that the original cut is 146min, that's the one I'm looking for, thing is i don't know if it could be found somewhere, if that's the case then I'll have to go with criterion's.

I like this Dennis Hopper documentary The American Dreamer. It was filmed on Hopper's land in New Mexico while he was trying to finish post-production for The Last Movie.

The documentary was a VHS-only gem until a month ago. I'm very interested to watch it again with this new release.

The Last Movie is not very good though. Jodorowsky told him to experiment narrative and editing, but the result is mostly a mess.

Cinema's most important aspect is the aesthetics.

It's the logical axiom of cinema, the first and therefore absolute truth to the medium. Meaning that, in a rough manner, sounds and storyline coherence are secondary to the will of aesthetic.

Following the systematic distribution of categories within cinema, it's logical to affirm that the diegetic structure of the mimesis is what matters the most, as it's closely vinculated to the roots of the medium itself.

Well silent comedies are usually undercranked a bit. But that creates a different effect: to heighten the action when the film is played back at normal speed.

Aside from other WKW or Christopher Doyle films I can't think of many that use this dreamlike slow shutter more effectively than Chungking Express. Maybe some big budget action movies have a scene or two that resembles it...Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan?

Fallen Angels is similar enough but with a bit darker tone.

that aesthetic in particular seems resigned to the early to mid/late 90s and I don't think anyone pulls it off quite like Wong Kar-wai.

I thought it was aesthetically efficient. I liked the offbeat tone and the disregard to standard filmic narrative. I also liked the combination of a sterile and gritty dreamlike Paris (devoid of any charm and magic) habited by marginal and borderline grotesque characters, going opposite to what is often being promoted by the media. But at the end of the film I realized it was nothing to write home about. A very simplistic and carefully constructed story done with occasional doses of flare and passion, surprisingly never losing the diegetic ground for unconvenient mistakes that might've prejudiced viewing immersion. A precise film.

I'd like to hear what you folks thought about this one.

I liked it, simplicity and all. I'll grant you that the ending didn't amount to much, but up to that point it kept me guessing. I thought we'd probably see beautiful Paris, and perhaps there would be more conflict between Jules and Jean (the boat love triangle trope). Vigo's writing and Michel Simon's acting were both sharp.

It also had several silent movie sequences. Most people probably don't even think about it, but the wordless montages of characters wandering around the streets is a silent era construct. It's fun to spot these silent sequences in sound films; John Ford is another director who used them a lot.
