Did you have time to see anything else from Rivette before watching this one?

I've seen a handful from him at random, not following ratings or guides, and it was all pretty impressive/distinctive in different ways.

Your impression of OUT reminds me a little of Celine and Julie, which seemed like it was going to be aimlessly long and uneventful. But the more I watched the more I was sucked into it.

I just watched Paris Belongs to Us to see how Rivette got started.

It begins as a typical drama about a group of young artists in the city. Sometimes these sorts of movies can be a little dry if nothing much happens.

However this story adds an interesting dimension with noirish elements of paranoia, mystery and fatalism. The result lies somewhere between Cassavetes and Kiss Me Deadly. A solid first feature.

Now I'm interested to read some of Rivette's writing for Cahiers... I don't suppose anyone has a recommendation?

Hi /film/. I've been thinking about starting a film blog, which I've done a few times before but I always give up on it. This time I'm going to try to be more committed to it, and as most people here seem to watch good movies and have interesting thoughts on them, I thought it might be kind of cool to reach out to you guys and see if anyone was interested in contributing some film writing.

I don't have any specific angle in mind, I was probably just going to write a few hundred words on whatever movies I've been watching recently, but I would be open to more structured ideas for recurring columns (i.e. a column covering all the Zatoichi movies or films of a certain director or country, whatever). I would also be open to making the whole thing more focused if anyone would be interested, one potential idea I had was covering "New Waves" of various countries. But I'll see what everyone wants to do.

As long as the writing is thoughtful and interesting I don't really care what the movies are, only restriction would be none of the really mainstream Hollywood stuff like Star Wars and Superhero movies, but I doubt anyone would want to write about that anyway. I don't expect this to go anywhere but I think it could be fun. If any of you are interested, let me know, I'm flexible and open to suggestions. Here's the initial site I made, subject to change: https://moviesfilmscinemablog.wordpress.com/

I just want to make something. I see a lot of good discussion about movies on this board and I feel like with just a little bit of polish and effort people could turn their thoughts into something readable that can escape the insularity of the board and be visible to more people and maybe inspire them to watch something different, or think of the things they have watched in a different way.

This has to be one of Franco Nero's best roles and one of the best Italian cop movies. The genre is often pulpy and violent but Confessions of a Police Captain is less action and more brooding. The film gives a cynical critique of Italian society and the complex web of corruption that dominates it.

Saw this last night, a rare and long forgotten piece of American independent cinema. It's main value is ethnographic, providing a realistic depiction of impoverished rural American, and is really the only thing that kept me awake through the amateurish editing and pacing, as well as some rare moments of solid cinematography.

Finally watched The Fountain.

Great movie, almost cried.

When you make a movie about life you have to touch death, and this movie really touched it, in almost every possible way. Its sad that the criticism I see for this movie is more about hur dur trees cannot live outside in space, instead of actually taking the meaning in.

Anyone on /tv/ attending? I was thinking about going this year, but decided next year would be better so my buddy can come with.

Which movies are you most excited about? Which movies are getting positive buzz? Which one will be the crown jewel?

Discuss all things Sundance and Robert Redford.

The ones I'm interested in so far:

>Goat (frat-hazing drama featuring Nick Jonas)

>Other People (black comedy featuring Jesse Plemmons and Molly Shannon)

>Manchester by the Sea (community/family drama featuring my boy Kyle Chandler; also Casey Affleck)

>Christine (Rebecca Hall plays an anchor who an heroes on a live broadcast)

I'm really rooting for Rebecca Hall. She's a very underrated actress who has never relied on looks to get a role. Then again, I'll always root for a movie to be good---it's a win for the fans of the medium.

I have no answers, only more questions.

Was Sundance "better" before so many movie stars started showing up?

Are there any independent studios left? Most "indie films" seem to come from branches of large established Hollywood studios with names like "Sony Pictures Classics".

And what is the best film festival in the US ... this or New York Film Festival or something else?

> Filmmaker Eddie Alcazar and musician Flying Lotus have been traveling the festival circuit with their disturbing and mesmerizing short film, "FUCKKKYOUUU," which most recently made waves at a sold out screening at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Flying Lotus, whose music provides the short with an unnervingly hypnotic score, just premiered the entire short film online via YouTube, and it's sure to be one of the most beautifully nightmarish pieces of cinema you'll see all week.

Hey, /film/, this is basically the only internet community on film that I enjoy visiting, maybe you guys can give me feedback on the short film I made recently. It was made with zero budget and I was the only crew, so don't expect too much. But I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, other than not having a tripod/steadicam.

>incident

The seriousness of movie accidents is overstated. Individuals perish, art is forever. I'm kidding, but labor's a lot more likely to die building a house than they are doing wild stunts. I think it's only a juicy topic because death by Hollywood puts the whole entertainment complex to blame, implicating all of us in the audience with red hands. Fittingly melodramatic.

OP has a good point. More interesting than bloody gossip is Rossellini describing seeing his actors as furniture.

I think it could be a good idea to start this board off with some OC, what do you think?

I've made this, it's a work in progress and I think it should be a group endeavor to include the most diverse tastes, so if you think something should be edited/added/removed feel free to contribute.

I've also made a template if someone else feels like making their own grid (I'm also looking for suggestions on other themes), you can download it here:
http://www26.zippyshare.com/v/2717201/file.html

It's very easy to edit: I've grouped the titles and the posters together, to add a poster (or a screenshot if the latter is not available) simply copy the image, select the grey rectangle with magic wand and paste into (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V) so you don't have to worry about them being aligned.

Well firstly there is a small part of me thats intrigued by Werner himself, I find his destructive lifestyle interesting and I want to know more about hime through his films

But the main reason is the availability of films here in Australia is trash. Obtaining this stuff legally is hard to do, our main outlet is Madman Entertainment who provide a lot of great stuff but it's no where near as expansive as say the criterion collection. So i figure the more support I can give to fuel their expansion the better.

On top of that I pirated a lot of stuff and I feel like making amends.

Do you mean the BFI version? I remember hearing that Criterion omits a little bit

I think there are three versions, but I'm not sure about one.

The one i picked from the library is 110min, i think criterion's is 116min and Wikipedia mentions that the original cut is 146min, that's the one I'm looking for, thing is i don't know if it could be found somewhere, if that's the case then I'll have to go with criterion's.

You're right. Here are the current releases:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/salo.htm

I can't find much useful information about the missing footage. It was cut and now it's lost.

I guess it takes Italian film makers to mention Jews in a film about American slavery. Never ever seen a film that ever mentions them in connection to slavery of africans.

Can anyone identify what film this still is from? I know it's James Coburn in the picture, but besides that I have no idea. Reverse searching got me nothing.

My guess is the photo was taken around 1973. Nothing in his filmography seems to fit. Are you sure it's from a movie?

Maybe this person on fb knows more about it

I like this Dennis Hopper documentary The American Dreamer. It was filmed on Hopper's land in New Mexico while he was trying to finish post-production for The Last Movie.

The documentary was a VHS-only gem until a month ago. I'm very interested to watch it again with this new release.

The Last Movie is not very good though. Jodorowsky told him to experiment narrative and editing, but the result is mostly a mess.

There are times when you'll wonder whether there is a plot being followed. They're a gang who embody bestial nihilism, even towards each other at times.

I was first attracted to by their usage of swastikas, and wondered whether that symbol had any place in any sort of pre-war, pre-60's leftism counter culture.

It must be to rustle jimmies, make society mad, show your group's edginess.

I guess punks did a similar thing in the early 80s. In the 90s zine culture was fascinated by Nazis (along with serial killers and other crazy shit).

And now anti-establishment corners of internet have their turn with the FUCK YOU swastika fetish.

It's a fuck you to the establishment. I don't think a lot of guys even looked at it as a racial thing back then, more of a fuck the system, we're edgy and we like to get fucked up.

Something like that.

What kind of movies did you enjoy as a child, and do you still think any of them have merit?

Under 10? Mostly cartoons ... not too many actual movies aside from live-action Disney. Def not anything like Lawrence of Arabia.

I think those movies have merit for kids. I'm guessing the classics (made before I was born) are better than new kids movies.
