Can you imagine an adaptation of Yume Nikki directed by Takashi Ito. Also, if Shuji Terayama was still alive, he could definitely do it justice.

What directors could possibly make an amazing Yume Nikki film?

Just watched a Japanese movie, "Watashi wa nisai". Was very relaxing as it was slow paced, simple, and barely anything happened. Are alot of Japanese films that way? How can I into Japanese movies? And what are some simple, calming films from any country?

Check out The Million Ryo Pot. It's the earliest of three extant films of Sadao Yamanaka starring Denjiro Okochi as a battle-scarred samurai. Okochi is a proto-Mifune, playing tough characters with commanding screen presence.

You can guess the valuable object in this film is the million ryo pot. Ryo is a gold coin.

I just remembered there's a maneki neko (cat figurine) that gets flipped backwards and stays that way for a while. I'm wondering if anyone can explain the significance of doing that? I suppose I should go back to see what happens in the plot before the cat is moved.

I fired up Netflix tonight to see what I could find. It's not my account so the recommendations were tailored toward another person. Seeing nothing of interest in the recommendations, I eventually scrolled to the International section. One of the first choices was A Star Is Born (1976) ... strange, was that made in Canada or something? (Nope!) I continued. Int'l section had stuff like Amelie, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Like Water for Chocolate, Sex and Lucia mixed with documentaries. Finally I settled on 13 Assassins, something I haven't seen yet. Good enough for a night, but I expected to find more new foreign films there.

Netflix seems like a place for popular movies that you haven't bothered to watch yet.

How do I get into watching cinema (without film school)? It seems really hard to get into and understand. Recently I have been watching some films by Refn, P.T.A, Harmony Korine, Kubrick etc. I am well aware this is not the lofty heights of cinema but it has at least cracked open the door for me in wanting to see films with a more artistic bent. However whenever I try and look for more stuff to watch, the recommendations are the same A24 releases that I don't really care for. I tried to find one of those "must watch" lists also and it was basically just a bunch of pop culture meme movies like "The Goonies" and "Ghostbusters" that everyone and their grandma has seen.

So, how do I do it? How does somebody get into truly appreciating film? Pic related is probably the closest thing i've seen to "real cinema" and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Also looking for some starter recommendations of what I should watch first. Also I know >spoonfeeding but I figured you guys wouldn't mind considering this isn't a huge board.

Anyone want to share alternate transfers for movies they like?

For instance, the Attack of The Clones Blu Ray is a hot mess, but the HDTV capture on MySpleen is a lot better, bitrate aside.

We could also make this a thread about best available transfers.

For example, David Fincher has one film not on Blu Ray (Panic Room) but it is on Superbit DVD.

It's Playtime by Jacques Tati. If you're new to the director I suggest Mr. Hulot's Holiday as initiation to his peculiar style. His comedic sensibilities carry a distinct influence from the silent era -- minimal dialog and many sight gags.

Playtime was his most ambitious project, shot on the expansive canvas of 70mm. It's one of those films you want to see on the largest screen possible.

This isn't a quality comparison but a color comparison. The bluray Harry's face looks purple, the new 4K print that is a 4K not 2KDI looks much better.

I tried to think of examples of open matte releases where you see more than you're supposed to see and it spoils the illusion. The only thing I could find is from the 2008 German bluray of American Psycho.

I have vague memories of some film about a sex change operation released in open matte where you discover the tranny character is actually just a woman. Something like that anyway.

I've been reading Kenneth Anger's infamous book on the lurid history of Hollywood. What do people here think of it?

I don't know Anger's own biography. But I'm surprised an experimental filmmaker would be so obsessed by celebrity culture. Granted he's gay...

As for the book itself, it's more a collection of popular folklore than a rigorous investigation of facts. Fresh-faced starlets are said to live dark private lives of drugs, sex, and death. Often the stories do not ring true, but IMHO they still resonate because of peoples' desire to project cinematic fantasy into reality.

Anyway here's a couple links if you want to take a look. The book is pretty cheap on Amazon too.

here's a weird one -

> Grahame's fourth and final marriage was to actor Anthony "Tony" Ray, the son of her second husband Nicholas Ray and his first wife Jean Evans; Anthony Ray was her former stepson. Their relationship reportedly began when Tony Ray was 13 years old and Grahame was still married to his father (which effectively ended the marriage when Nicholas Ray caught the two in bed together).

Thanks guys, I heard about this book but never read it. Our old pal Nick Bougas was interested in this type of stuff.

There was a bad TV series based on this book. I'd never seen it before but I just noticed one episode is on youtube. The episode features stories about Junkie John Belushi, Nympho Vivian Leigh, Faggot Charles Laughton. Hosted by Tony Curtis.
