Anyone want to share alternate transfers for movies they like?

For instance, the Attack of The Clones Blu Ray is a hot mess, but the HDTV capture on MySpleen is a lot better, bitrate aside.

We could also make this a thread about best available transfers.

For example, David Fincher has one film not on Blu Ray (Panic Room) but it is on Superbit DVD.

But that's just a crapshoot. Looking at two very different versions of an image can be fun, and if people have some they want to share I think it'd be a good thread.

AotC is going to look likr shit in any case. It was the first digital shot movie using early first generatiin hardware. The live footage is basically in master format 1440x800 with 3:1:1 chroma, iirc.

Since you're on spleen, just search "35mm", lots of good shit there like the Jurassic Park and The Matrix in original color timing transfers.

I actually like the rough look of early/prosumer digital so it doesn't bother me.

Revenge of The Sith does look a lot more like a blockbuster Hollywood digitally shot film though.

IF you haven't, download the Back to The Future torrent on myspleen that says it's a DCP rip. It has a really nice and high bitrate, higher than Blu Ray.

Myspleen changed its rules a few years ago? They used to have very few movies, mostly 90s MTV and comedy shows. Now it's a lot better with a broader scope of material. I see they've featured the great Hollywood series transferred from Laserdisc.

I snagged it ages ago, I think it was from the same master as the blu-rays but during the blu-ray conversion, they decided to apply additional DNR and degraining, and obviously overdid it. Encoding a blu-ray direct from the DCP proved a BD-25 could have substantially more detail without the additional processing.

I once read about Mulholland Dr VHS release that did not have blurring during the sex scene. It might have been a Dutch VHS. Now I can't find anything about it! Anyone have more info on this?

I watched The Searchers on an old Warner DVD because all subsequent versions turned up the yellow too far.

Instead of red sand and blue sky, you have yellow sand and sometimes greenish sky.

I prefer the way it was released. There is always just one version, all the others that follow the first are inherently shit.

Chris Nolan worked on the new 70mm print of 2001, which screens for the first time today at Cannes. Nolan attempted to recreate the 1968 cinema experience by "unrestoring" the film.

Here's another.

Left is a technicolor print. Middle is more your average shown-in-theaters back then print. Right is the Blu Ray.

I prefer middle, myself.

I was looking at the different versions of Playtime and was surprised that 2 Criterion blurays released only 5 years apart have a significant difference in color. The 2009 version is cold and neutral while the 2014 boxset version has more character and resembles a vintage postcard. Since Criterion is supposed to be true to the original, I'm curious what changed in their color timing and why. Without checking I suppose they could have licensed the first transfer and restored it themselves the second time.

It's Playtime by Jacques Tati. If you're new to the director I suggest Mr. Hulot's Holiday as initiation to his peculiar style. His comedic sensibilities carry a distinct influence from the silent era -- minimal dialog and many sight gags.

Playtime was his most ambitious project, shot on the expansive canvas of 70mm. It's one of those films you want to see on the largest screen possible.

This isn't a quality comparison but a color comparison. The bluray Harry's face looks purple, the new 4K print that is a 4K not 2KDI looks much better.

I tried to think of examples of open matte releases where you see more than you're supposed to see and it spoils the illusion. The only thing I could find is from the 2008 German bluray of American Psycho.

I have vague memories of some film about a sex change operation released in open matte where you discover the tranny character is actually just a woman. Something like that anyway.
