Just watched a Japanese movie, "Watashi wa nisai". Was very relaxing as it was slow paced, simple, and barely anything happened. Are alot of Japanese films that way? How can I into Japanese movies? And what are some simple, calming films from any country?

I like this graphic because the screenshots themselves are very beautiful.
Yes there's a strand of Japanese cinema that's characterized by simplicity and eloquence. Ozu is one of the best and most well-known examples. He filmed low-key domestic dramas with a minimalist cinematography: static shots viewed from the level of the tatami (floor mat). A modern filmmaker who draws much inspiration from Ozu is Kore-eda.
I also recommend Kaneto Shindo's dramas, especially The Naked Island.

Not japanese but look into Eric Rohmer and Hong Sang-soo. More humor and romance involved, but they're literal talkies. Very unpretentiously and austerely filmed. More contemporary, I'd recommend Taiwanese New Wave: Hsou Hsia-Hsien, Tsai Ming-Liang, Edward Yang. Try maybe Hsien's Dust in the Wind, Liang's The Hole and Yang's The Terrorizers.

Totally agree with the first two, but Marienbad was pretty intense imho

How about checking out tao films VoD? I have set this up as an extension of The Art(s) of Slow Cinema, which has been mentioned on here before.

I know you're into minimalism but that's not much of an explanation

Does anyone know of the documentary about the 2011 earthquake that was compiled entirely of found footage from cell-phones and all that? I remember it came out pretty soon after it and it may just have been on YouTube
