I like what one person said in that /tv/ thread

> Few things annoy me more than movies where there is a father depicted as an asshole because he's providing his son with a way while the son wants to be a flaky artist dreamer.

This trope might make a good story but I agree it's unrealistic - poor life advice. I'd rather see people with different occupational backgrounds making films. If everyone is a starving bohemian artist you'll see the same sort of ideas over and over.

Do not pursue film unless your dads spielberg. Go buy a camera, teach yourself to write and network with other people in your city. If you can make enough noise with a low budget approach, you'll get noticed a la Shane Carruth.

Unless this is something you just have to get out of your system and if that's the case, maybe your dad will hire you back in five years when you're broke and haven't done anything.

I am very interested in ethical situations in specific conditions. It could be a school or university or a business model. I recently read a cool text https://paperap.com/paper-on-enron-the-smartest-guys-in-the-room/ which has a lot of options for the development of events. A business partnership is a series of disputes and compromises. I think that controversy gives rise to truth and this is a fact. This is reminiscent of the old meetings of enterprise shareholders who argue about the allocation of investments. A person has a choice, and we empathize with this choice, but we always represent our interests. Students studying marketing or business are required to read this text.

We the Living - censored, lost, rediscovered Italian adaptation of Ayn Rand's first book

<We the Living (originally released in 1942 as two films, Noi vivi and Addio Kira) is a film adaptation of Ayn Rand's novel We the Living. It was directed by Goffredo Alessandrini and stars Alida Valli, Rossano Brazzi, and Fosco Giachetti. It was made and released in Italy during World War II, then subsequently banned by the Fascist government and pulled from theaters. The film was lost and forgotten for decades, then found and restored with Rand's involvement. The film was released for the first time in the United States in 1986.

I've been thinking about the purpose of this board. What is your opinion:

Do you think this should be a place to talk only about "high cinema", with words like "movie" or "director" forbidden (there are only "films" and "auteurs") with no "capeshits" and blockbusters and allowed,

Or, a place for discussion about every single film with no prejudices, as long it is a film and there is a discussion, not spamming pictures of Aiden Gillan. (there's >>>/tv/ for that)

Discuss, state your mind.

Excluding new releases, which films do you want to watch but cannot find?

I'm intrigued by Once, an allegorical dialogue-free feature that premiered at Cannes in 1974. The film could be fascinating or boring as hell, but the soundtrack of lo-fi ambient electronics would make it worthwhile to find out.

<Personal issues and emotions don't translate well into art

isn't the main attraction of art that skilled artists can translate any any psyxic thing into a communicible form?

nothing must be understood, but your experience of an art product is often going to be better if you understand the art product. though you're right about the 'understanding' card: if you say "you just don't understand the art product, if you understood the art product, you would understand this", you are not really helping anyone understand anything; and there is a sort of person who will leave arguments like that with a feeling of discouragement as though he cannot understand art, which tends to cause him to stop making attempts to understand art.

so

>>14030

please, instead of telling us that we need to do X to understand it, help us understand it. tell us about it. give a description of it's essential qualities that make it what it is. and don't just say 'ineffability of art', art is not ineffable, maybe some particular art products are, but then you must give a good reason for us to believe that that art product is ineffable.

>>14150

<since he isn't European he doesn't get a pass to be artsy

that's false reasoning, though the conclusion is true: nobody gets a pass to anything based on the parts of their identity which they cannot control. if being european and making art is sufficient for that art to be considered good, then why is my art not considered good? i'm european, i make bad art. despicable. or maybe my art is just misunderstood and ineffable

^this nigga goin wild

First things, first; I didn't even said that "art is ineffable" trash you came with (which is funny you enter the debate showing yourself that way). On the other hand, you're misunderstanding making an axioma to defend your personal thoughts for not being capable to understand art with the inherent condition of an art being expressed by feelings which is where I was focusing the argument in the first place. You want to go wild and jump out the window, it's ok for me.

>That said.

I think I was very clear pointing a direction to "understand" what emotional films like the one Gallo did, anyways, I'll give you both more hints since you asked.

Add to your wishlist films directed by sensible directors like Ozu, Ford, Bresson or Gotard (among others); people who understood the importance of gestures and so did Gallo (trough his egomaniac ways) in both of his movies.

Aside of that, you can see in BB a lot of improvisation, a thing which is completely forgotten these days, just watch Cassavettes's Faces you'll understand it quickly.

Btw, cut both of you the "product" thing since we're talking of art manifestations not industry little toys. You're welcome.

The Prussian Cur (1918)

WWI anti-German propaganda directed by Raoul Walsh. This poster is rather interesting as we see Uncle Sam about to intervene with Lady Liberty and "DEMOCRACY" behind him. The first of many such interventions!

<The film's director, Raoul Walsh, called it his "rottenest picture ever" for its anti-German sentiment, while its star Miriam Cooper (Walsh's wife) called it the worst film in which she had ever appeared.

The film includes a depiction of a Canadian who was crucified by German soldiers. The shocking story was based on real accounts from the war, though difficult to verify it was effective war propaganda. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crucified_Soldier

The list is helpful to get started on NOIR with plenty of great titles waiting. I've been working through the 250 films on and off for a few years, so why not discuss it here? I hope I'm not the only one interested in this style of filmmaking.

I just saw this article on Roberto Gavaldón, billed as "Mexico’s Auteur of Noir". The title might be misleading because he directed more than just noir, but I think he's worth knowing anyway (and I recall he was mentioned previously in some other thread).

>Best known for directing urban melodramas that borrowed freely from their northern film noir cousins, Gavaldón was a highly accomplished craftsman. He applied himself assiduously to whatever projects came his way, rising quickly to the top ranks of his profession. Though his films are too varied to reduce to a single authorial signature, the best among them often focus on characters with hidden desires and split personalities that cut them off from society and isolate them within their obsessions.

Backfire (Vincent Sherman, 1950)

A decent second-tier noir with Edmond O'Brien. Characters jaunt around Los Angeles to sleuth a mysterious disappearance and its ensuing trail of murders. Like D.O.A., the well-known O'Brien noir released the same year, Backfire has a backdrop of WWII vets struggling to find their place in a society that has progressed without them. With limited job options, these men feel a tug toward the seedy side of life in order to make ends meet. The flashback-heavy plot takes us through dilapidated hotels, dark bungalows, smoky arenas and swanky nightclubs.

Warner Bros Swedish import Viveca Lindfors gets top billing in the opening credits despite limited screen time. Lindfors has a strong, exotic face with riveting eyes. She's prettier than Swedish icon Ingrid Bergman, and Warner brought Lindfors stateside hoping she'd become the Next Big Thing. While she's a standout in this film, Warner nonetheless declined to renew her contract. She was relegated to relative obscurity in B-movies and TV roles for the remainder of her career.

Another interesting castmember is Leonard Strong, who droops his eyelids and adopts a rather silly accent to play a Chinese butler. Strong was a Utah Mormon of Welsh heritage often cast as Asian bit characters. Although imdb claims he's an "Eurasian-American actor" he had no Asian blood. So his caricatured portrayals could be seen as mildly offensive yellowface.

Americans love war. And those tiny countries (aside from Granada they're the size of a US state) know how to fight, conventional militaries especially the US Military hates guerilla warfare, Apocalypse Now is a good movie. And despite being only being in WW1 for a year it was still WW1, the most brutal war of all time, Johnny Got His Gun is one of the greatest war movies ever made. And Americans are sensitive to trauma and get mentally scarred from it on top of getting no support back home so it makes good drama.

>Buñuel

There's no better thread for it, so here's a list of films he liked:

Paths of Glory, Roma, Battleship Potyomkin, La grande abbuffata, Goupi Mains Rouges, Jeux interdits, early films of Fritz Lang, Buster Keaton and Marx Brothers, Rękopis znaleziony w Saragossie, pre-war Renoir's films, Persona, La strada, Le notti di Cabiria, La dolce vita, Sciuscià, Ladri di biciclette, Umberto D. (daily reminder that de Sica is retarded american, literal retard), von Stroheim's, Sternberg's(Underworld) and Wajda's films, Manon, L'Atalante, Dead of Night, White Shadows in the South Seas, Portrait of Jennie, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, La caza and La prima Angélica (he likes Saura overall, aragonian as well)

and disliked:

Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, From Here to Eternity, Roma città aperta and Romance sentimentale (the second one is worse than the first, seems impossible, I know)

He actually hates Dos Passos, Hemingway and Steinbeck too, for which I like him very much, overrated rubbish, rubbish. But, in the end, he himself is overrated as fuck, put on piedestal by brainlets and retards like Gustavo Alatriste who saw Viridiana six times and then shout "I finally get it!". All clueless, brainless demystifiers and explainers should be shot dead. And tbh, saw Tristana recently, really, he's no surrealist(at least his second french period totally isn't), just like in Viridiana, blunt, stupid symbolism, beating the shit out of my eyes, that would be nothing but his films are that, should be that, should've been that, when you take that away, you get lacking, boring camera, like the mexanon already said, cheap props, hasty, or, rather, no production, way better done herzog-esque bullshit, self-injection of his (based) opinions into each and every character (I don't know why he didn't like Borges honestly, saying he's complacent and arrogant, like, I don't like him too, but for other reasons) and "ohmagd sodep shtyrslf" feeling, but that one he sure has done on purpose to hide himself and get cheap laughs, and good stories, sometimes. That said, I like him very much, he's very comfy to watch (Tristana with its brownish pallete is as comfy as it gePost too long. Click here to view the full text.

>Bicycle Theives

I never understood why they translated the title thus. The original translates directly to "Bicycle Thief", and that's really the focus of the film. not Bicycle Theives. Sure there may be two bicycle theives in Bicycle Theif, but the first one is mainly a premiss, while the second one is actually explored in depth. Also, the using the only makes sense when we see the second theft occurring, so it leaves those members of the audience confused (those who actually paid attention to the title) for a long time, and spoils the film for others (those who thought through what's happening and derived what seems likely). Then, of course, there's the fact that the film is only about the second bicycle theif, never about the first bicycle theif, but i already mentioned that.
