>because nobody should care about themselves or where they live, they should always be willing to sacrifice everything they've worked for to someone else, because how else will communism work?

That sounds like imperialism, when poor British common-folk would enlist to fight in foreign wars because there was no hope for them at home (poverty in Britain prior to the 20th century was so bad, young men would have growth spurts just from vile army rations vs the destitution back home) and all at the behest of a minority of already wealthy proprietors and work shy leaches (inherited wealth).

Do you really believe the Opium Wars or the British Raj were in the interests of the common British man?

Nationalism and its ilk are merely a distraction away from the one's who benefit from the status quo.

This is currently the state of /tv/ at 27 Sep 2014

There're practically almost no discussions of tv shows except for a few threads with fewer than 10 replies.

I believe we should merge back, allow a bit of shit/Bane posting so we can get more users for a single board than split up.

Otherwise most users would rather go back to posting in 1/2chan.

To add, I totally agree about the pieces of a whole comment.

I recently watched his first film, Badlands, and it doesn't feel nearly as confident as his new works.

It's still special, but he's just starting to become the (dare I say) singular genius that he is today.

Badlands has too much of a narrative and not enough pretty pictures, and I mean that sincerely.

Apparently he has "repented" and gone back to working with a real script for his next movie, some kind of war film about a conscientious objector (I think).

It will be interesting to see Malick make a slightly more conventional movie again.

Am I utterly insane if I think George Lucas elevated Star Wars to something close to Malick-ian with this film?

Also, Ron Fricke (Baraka, Samsara, etc took pictures of clouds for most of the scenes with clouds in this film.

Read the script man, it doesn't bite and it's virus free cross fingers, lol. You can compare it with the movie and believe me, there are some solid, rich dialogues and great character development butchered for the sake of time and budget that will make you fill the void in some long silences and scenes that seem out of place.

But I'm glad of some changes and additions, like Ruby's frustrated lesbian scene and later morgue sex and the omission of her death at the hands of Sarah when they have an argument the day after eating Jesse. Or the mountain lion instead of a common wildcat.

What I didn't like was the abuse of symbolism that could have been more understandable if they had followed the script to the letter, but it's just my opinion. And Keanu's acting was so stiff damn it, so porn acting level. I wanted to slap the shit out of him and tell him to act as if he was his own father. Mickey Rourke or Michael Madsen could have been better for the role. What a waste.

And of course, the Neon Demon. I' ts better described in the script, it's not only a symbol, but "something" that later becomes "someone else" and "something" again at the same time as you see in the credit scene. The golden goddess that Jack sees in her, the shining sun that Sarah so desperately wants to be, the sacrificial virgin that Ruby lusts, the relentless guilt that haunts Gigi to madness. Anything more than human and because of that, not human anymore.

I have moderate hopes for a book of Polly Stenham based on the script she helped to create.

Bill Butler, the editor of A Clockwork Orange, just died. This line from his obit stuck out to me:

>He was introduced to Kubruck by “The Shining” editor Ray Lovejoy, and cut “A Clockwork Orange” in Kubrick’s garage. His son recounted that he worked alongside Kubrick 14 hours a day, seven days a week, for nearly a year.

First off that is craziness - those numbers would mean nearly 100 hour of work per week. It's closely related to the fact that Kubrick liked to do take after take after take of a scene. You may assume he was trying to get the "perfect" take. But I don't think he always knew what he wanted at the time of filming. Instead I think he wanted a lot of footage of each scene because that gave him a lot of options for editing. Since these many options had to pass through Kubrick's obsessive perfectionism, it's no surprise to hear about such a grueling editing process.

Read 2001 also.

I'm sure many people here have at least tried to read A Clockwork Orange, it was hard for me to get into, but the foreward/intro or whatever I remembered as saying that the American version of the book did not have the final chapter in it and Kubrick had based the film off of the American version of the book.

Basically Alex ended up trying to go back to his old life but is rather fed up with it and just goes about his life normally as if nothing had ever happened. Where as in the movie when you see him flash that crooked smile again you're left thinking he just ends up back at his old tricks again for good.

>>4294

I've seen the Killing, Spartacus, and Lolita. The Killing and Spartacus are very well done but typical films of that era. Lolita you really start to see Kubrick push the envelope in my opinion.

Strangelove is my favorite. Went completely dark in and never in my life did I expect such a hilarious comedy.

Let's talk about some films with troubled/interesting/long production histories.

Bonus points if they actually turned out good.

I think A.i. is a great film, but Dune is a different story.

I love its visual style and tone, but the effects are ass, and Lynch clearly had issues condensing the story.

If you like Star Trek you really should watch Galaxy Quest. It's a truly great comedy.

I tried to watch this movie, but god damn, it is the most ponderous boring thing I have ever seen.

It seemed well made in sense, but I was really not feeling it.

I can see that. It's probably not for everyone which is why it did so poorly at the box office.

This was good, and followed up on one of the two big questions from Prometheus.

If the third film answers the other one, then this movie is an excellent middle chapter.

If the third movie blows it, then this movie was still good, but not the sequel to Prometheus that it should have been.

When all the bottomfeeders on /tv/ hate it, you know it's doing something right.

I was wondering the exact same thing some days ago

What country didn't drop in quality in the 80's other than HK?

France started to suffer since the 70's, going full gay comedies in mid-70's

USA embraced the blockbuster philosophy and injected money and actors instead of scripts and directors

Italy so far seems to have been caught in comedies, exploitation stuff and lots of nudity

And i think Hong Kong blasted the US in the 90's, South Korea in the 00's but mostly because of the ratio, half of their movies are watchable, unlike 00's US, who has an understandable unbalanced ratio due to Hollywood

I ignore France post-80's, other than Annaud and Jeunet

>What country didn't drop in quality in the 80's other than HK?

There must be a few examples, perhaps in a country that didn't have many films before that, but I think most of the big players were better in the 70s

Some film movements of the 80s:

* Late 1970s and 1980s – Hong Kong New Wave Cinema

* 1980s – Russian Parallel Cinema (also referred to as Soviet Parallel Cinema)

* 1980s and 2000s – South Korean New Wave Cinema

* 1980s to present – American Independent Cinema

* 1980s – French ‘Cinéma du look’ Film Movement

* 1982-1990 – Taiwanese First New Wave Cinema

* 1990-2010 – Taiwanese Second New Wave Cinema

* Late 1980s to present – East Asian Cinema [including influential genres like the Hong Kong action film, Japanese anime and South Korean thriller movie]

Here's a book talking about fresh 80s film movements in countries like Iran, Bolivia, Philippines. These movements were all based on Super 8 which I don't personally enjoy very much. I watched the Berlin Super 80 collection and there wasn't too much that stuck with me.
