Help me out, /film/. I can't think of any really great "American cinema". By that I mean films that show something of the "American spirit", and American history. Something you would watch and make you damn proud to be an American; either because of the quality of the film making, or the presentation of the subject matter, or both. I'm mainly looking for films that take place before 1900. One or two that already come to mind:
- Young Mr. Lincoln (by John Ford, not sure if that's the title)
- Birth of a Nation
- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (although I'm not teally looking for Westerns, and I'd prefer historical subject matter)
Bonus points for an actual quality film about Andrew Jackson. pic kind of maybe not related

There are not many Andrew Jackson movies. There was a silent short in 1913 called Andrew Jackson (probably impossible to find) and a Charlton Heston feature from 1953 which looks watchable.
Other than that you'll probably have to watch the History Channel for AJ content.

There are many "American Dream" movies like Ed Wood, There Will Be Blood, Rocky, etc. but it seems like you want something with a different tone. I'll recommend Sweet Smell of Success even though it's not quite right either.
I think John Ford is a good starting point and I might add William Wellman too. Maybe films about the Alamo? I can't vouch for any of them but John Wayne directed and starred in one.

sweet smell of success is fantastic, but not what im looking for. "american dream" isnt quite the theme im looking for either. it's more of a historical thing.

That's a tricky one if you throw out westerns. I was thinking about John Huston (Red Badge of Courage is historical) or his father Walter in The Devil and Daniel Webster.

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. YOU'VE BEEN TRUMPED
Since Trump is in the OP and riding high in the polls I want to post this documentary about his developing a golf course in Scotland. It's obviously biased against Trump but you still get a sense of how he operates.

Plenty of movies have that American spirit, like Rocky IV and It's a Wonderful Life, but you're severely limiting yourself if you only want movies that take place before the 20th century. Some movies that are coming to mind are Gone With the Wind (1939) and The Yearling (1946). Also two Shirley Temple movies that take place in the Confederate South The Littlest Rebel (1935) and The Little Colonel (1935). There's also Buster Keaton's The General (1926).

Heston also played Andrew Jackson again in The Buccaneer (1958).
That's all I can think of.

interesting
Though other than placing the dirt mounds where he did and destructing some of their property (that was built on his recently purchased land), this mostly seemed a problem of the Scottish government and authorities

I watched that Trump documentary and took away two things. First, Trump crushes those who oppose him using any means necessary. The doc only shows one side of the situation (Trump refused to be interviewed) so we don't know everything about the property disputes. But Trump came off as both petty and ruthless.
Second his projects cannot and do not live up to the hype. Certainly he uses hype as a tool to get things done. But that means that middling — or even poor — results cause a lot of resentment.
To extrapolate these observations to the presidency, I'd expect Democrats to howl at Trump's power grabs just as they praised Obama for doing the same thing. I'm hoping this finally leads to real pushback against executive power. Make the Constitution Great Again.
I'm a little worried that Trump will fail to improve things like the economy (I don't see import tariffs helping much). He's too many big promises to deliver on everything. If popular sentiment turns against him, the Spawn of AIDS Skrillex may be re-energized to put some crazy leftist into power.

I've got a Civil War movie called Copperhead on my watchlist. I think it might qualify, even if it's not the best thing ever made. Has anyone seen it?
The screenplay was written by Bill Kauffman who's an all-around great guy and the author of this book about the original America First movement.

hey there 4chan
Are you saying Capra made Trumpian films or he made pre-1900s films? I don't remember many of either from him

picking films set in the 20th century is easy

Vimeo embed. Click thumbnail to play. Trump related: Netflix documentary GET ME ROGER STONE
It's a profile of Stone, his history in politics, his relationship with Trump. It's made by lefties but I still enjoyed it. They portray Stone as morally bankrupt ...which is probably true
