I came upon this flick recently, by chance. I keep wondering, what's the public's deal with Beyond the Black Rainbow? It isn't nearly as bad or shallow as its reputation claims. Personally, I found it to be very enjoyable, in spite of its slow pace and all-too-known absurd plot twists. The direction and cinematography are both superb, acquiring an aesthetic display on par with arthouse cinema. Perhaps this fact led spectators to believe it would unfold a deeper meaning, even though it is, in essence, a B movie.
Has anybody in here seen it? What did you think of it?

I liked it too because it paid homage to many films I like, such as Suspiria and even films that I dislike, such as Begotten
The biggest complaint people had with the film is that they thought it was "style over substance" which I agree with, but a film full of style and no substance isn't necessarily a bad thing. I guess it just depends on what you want to personally gain from watching films.

This was the mindset I had when I saw it and enjoyed it tremendously. Indeed you can see plenty of homages, ranging from stuff like Phase IV, The Andromeda Strain, Suspiria as the above poster said, and of course 2001 Space Odyssey, none of these undermining the actual film's merits. The soundtrack, for me, is what really takes the cake, however. I've always been a sucker for that kosmische, synth-based ambient from the 70's.

The film is extremely underrated. It has such a different way of pacing and working out with its elements than any other cinematic work of art, the only film that I can think of that could come even close to being like this one in style and sound work is 2001: a space odyssey.
Even if the story is not that great and it has some awkward moments, everything else makes up for it perfectly.

I'll defend this movie to the death, man. It's a total callback to the golden days of arthouse sci-fi, flicks like Solaris, Phase IV (which is a great fucking movie, I'd say BtBR pays more homage to that than anything else) and 2001.
It's a picture and lights show, it's all about the spectacle. I think it also tells a really awesome story, but that's not really the focus. Cinema of attractions, man.
But seriously, everyone should watch Phase IV.

I thought they found it and even screened it, but they weren't going to release it on DVD/blu for some idiotic reason.
The video that was posted on youtube looked pretty amazing. It took the film to the next level IMO.

Still, I liked the movie very much solely because of its visuals and the soundtrack, the Sentionaut scene is the best fusion of both.
