This was good, and followed up on one of the two big questions from Prometheus.

If the third film answers the other one, then this movie is an excellent middle chapter.

If the third movie blows it, then this movie was still good, but not the sequel to Prometheus that it should have been.

When all the bottomfeeders on /tv/ hate it, you know it's doing something right.

Ridley Scott is a talented filmmaker.

I have never been more disappointed by any film than Prometheus. It was staggeringly bad – the characters were paper thin and acting like idiots – the plot was a complete mess, and Lindelof’s mystery box gimmick was not helping it.

I learned my lesson, so I will not be watching any of Scott’s further films in the Alien universe.

O’Bannon & Giger are spinning in their graves.

This post is too retarded for /film/.

Scott is a senile old fossil with two good films to his name, who is currently ruining his legacy.

I was being petty to save you the embarrassment of showing everyone how retarded you are.

Just by the trailer I see that Ridley used shaky camera and mediocre tracking shots for all the "horror" moments and gave a genric cast of characters. Why should I give a shit about the in universe questions if I don't care about the people in it. The cinematography is shit, the story is shit, and if you actually enjoyed it you must be one of those people who talk about movies but know literally nothing about them,/tv/ has better taste than you, fucking /television/ has better taste.

Excuse me if what I'm about to say is too """/tv/""" but go the fuck back to Reddit. /r/movies is full of people like you--

Wait no they enjoy movies like Stalker so even they have better taste.

Weyland told him to "try harder" in the previous scene, and Holloway actually technically gives David permission in this exchange

DAVID: How far would you go to find out the truth? What would you do?

HOLLOWAY: Anything and everything.

So, the reason David decided to infect a crew member with a potentially harmful substance was because of the explanation given on screen clear as crystal?

Here I was expecting some earth-shattering insight that would prove to all that ‘Prometheus’ wasn’t just a colossal train-wreck.

Not only was that obvious, but it is also beyond retarded. The film brings up a lot of interesting ideas, then completely ignores them, so it can turn into a creature feature in the third act.

‘Prometheus’ was nothing but a shallow cash-grab written by a known hack (Lindelof) & directed by a senile director who’s role in the Alien universe is miniscule. Now he claims he had it all planned out from the get-go. Fuck that cantankerous arsehole.

O’Bannon & H. R. Giger made Alien – any other director could have made Alien what it was. Personally, I would have liked to see John Milius or John Carpenter direct Alien.

And your most recent entry to the conversation is the very definition of “not trying at all”.

Scott is an overrated director who is ruining his legacy by revisiting the film series that made him famous.

O’Bannon & Carpenter already knew each other, having worked together on ‘Dark Star’, so Carpenter might’ve been the best pick for an alternate director.

Ridley Scott is a better filmmaker on a technical level though.

Carpenter's filmography is as uneven, if no more so, than Scotts', and while I love The Thing, it doesn't have the quality of visual composition that Alien has.

But the bottom line is that you're a try hard fool, and i'm disappointed that you are aware of this board, as your reductive virtue signaling nonsense would be better suited to /tv/.

>Ridley Scott is a better filmmaker on a technical level though.

“That’s like, your opinion, dude.”

Carpenter kickstarted the slasher film craze of the 1970s & 1980s with ‘Halloween’, and ‘Alien’ is a slasher film set in space.

From the late ’70s Carpenter had a steady track record, with highlights such as ‘Halloween’ (1978), ‘Escape from New York’ (1981) & ‘The Thing’ (1982). It wasn’t till the mid to late ’90s his track record took a hit – his last great film being ‘In the Mouth of Madness’ (1995).

Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ remake is arguably better than ‘Alien’ – a fantastic cast, memorable characters you actually care about, a great score (as always), great pacing and atmosphere, and some of the best practical effects ever.

In 1978 Carpenter, IMHO, was more than qualified to have directed ‘Alien’ instead of Scott.

We could have had Kurt Russell playing captain Dallas!

>But the bottom line is that you're a try hard fool, and i'm disappointed that you are aware of this board, as your reductive virtue signaling nonsense would be better suited to /tv/.

Your opinion means nothing to me, and I’m not sure why you think I care what someone online thinks of me. Also, based on the hilarious reaction images, it seems your nonsensical, feel-based ramblings would be more appreciated at /b/.

Yes, I have. I've also seen every special feature on the Alien anthology set.

Ridley Scott's choices are why the movie is considered great.

A bad director wouldn't have been able to maximize the effectiveness of the monster, no matter how good the design.

What made Alien great, and why it is remembered today is because of H. R. Giger's xenomorph design - he won an Oscar for that.

no

Giger was not a filmmaker. If you gave that monster design to, say, Roger Corman, and he made a movie, no one would remember or care about it.

You could have Giger do the design and Corman direct and it’d be on par with Scott’s Alien – or better.

Corman is a criminally underrated director – just look at his work with Vincent Price – ‘the Poe cycle’. A lot of people only think of him as that B-movie director who made a ton of cheap schlocky films, but he has made some great films, and even got the life-time achievement Academy Award.

TL;DR: Giger’s design is what made Alien great and Scott could have been replaced and it’d still be considered one of the best sci-fi/horror films of all time.
