Let's discuss this film, /film/. What did you guys think of it, and how did it compare to Refn's previous works?

I liked it a lot. Gorgeous camerawork and composition, the soundtrack was excellent (aside from the closing Sia track, which felt out of place), and the narrative was consistently entertaining. It didn't feel intellectually vapid or pretentiously self-absorbed; there were ideas on death and beauty to chew on in between the genre movie gut-punches.

Aesthetically it was very nice, but I thought it was quite empty, had too much shock value and the protagonist was obnoxious.

>Aesthetically it was very nice, but I thought it was quite empty

That's pretty much what I'm expecting but I'm still interested to see it

I guess I'll watch any Refn movie, even a bad one, because I like the atmosphere, music and production design

I just watched this last night with the wife, I think it's on par with Drive and I need to watch it again (sober).

It's pretty obvious why this film was trashed by the (critics).

>protagonist was obnoxious

That's a major part of her character though.

I enjoyed it, but I could see why people would dislike it. The script and general premise is weak, the acting fluctuates between bad to mediocre with the occasional great moment. (Jena Malone stole almost every scene she was in). Other than that, it was good by normal standards but I couldn't help but be a little disappointed. I expected more from the film and Refn.

I liked it. Maybe my expectations were lowered before watching. It made me think of late period De Palma - if De Palma could make better movies.

Some of the stranger aspects aren't completely clear to me. I found a video which attempts to examine the occult aspects. Despite some flaws I think it's a decent starting point for considering the subtext.

The definition of pretty imagery confused with good aesthetics, his composition is basically "let's make it symmetrical". With this, Refn elongates his terrible simple plot.

There is no substance at all. And on a personal note, I was struggling with Elle being considered a top beauty in the movie, it wasn't very believable but maybe that was just me, I don't know what people consider a pretty face nowadays.

I like her look but it's probably not the level of perfection they gushed about in the script

I do not agree. I can't say I "liked" this film in the sense that I thought it was disgusting and a blight on my memory that I won't remove, and I would never recommend it to anyone, but there's quite a bit a substance imo. The video posted earlier in this thread goes into it. Refn's recent films are almost mythological, but for the satanic, modern era. What we have here is a sort of symbolic presentation of the world today, may God save our souls from the devil

I love the Pusher films.

I liked The Neon Demon. Visuals and music were great, the rest was interesting enough. I liked Jena Malone. Is she good in anything else?

I liked the original script more than the movie, but if they had a bigger budget we would be watching a better production, and in the script we understand the real motives of Sarah

Read the script man, it doesn't bite and it's virus free cross fingers, lol. You can compare it with the movie and believe me, there are some solid, rich dialogues and great character development butchered for the sake of time and budget that will make you fill the void in some long silences and scenes that seem out of place.

But I'm glad of some changes and additions, like Ruby's frustrated lesbian scene and later morgue sex and the omission of her death at the hands of Sarah when they have an argument the day after eating Jesse. Or the mountain lion instead of a common wildcat.

What I didn't like was the abuse of symbolism that could have been more understandable if they had followed the script to the letter, but it's just my opinion. And Keanu's acting was so stiff damn it, so porn acting level. I wanted to slap the shit out of him and tell him to act as if he was his own father. Mickey Rourke or Michael Madsen could have been better for the role. What a waste.

And of course, the Neon Demon. I' ts better described in the script, it's not only a symbol, but "something" that later becomes "someone else" and "something" again at the same time as you see in the credit scene. The golden goddess that Jack sees in her, the shining sun that Sarah so desperately wants to be, the sacrificial virgin that Ruby lusts, the relentless guilt that haunts Gigi to madness. Anything more than human and because of that, not human anymore.

I have moderate hopes for a book of Polly Stenham based on the script she helped to create.

It's just not well made at all to be engaging And Elle isn't that good of an actress to make you even care about finishing the film.
