How much will I miss if I watch the movie before seeing the series?
I take puppet drama rather seriously.

I decided to try to watch the first couple episodes of the series before seeing the … picture …filmed in Supermarionation. I think this will maximize my enjoyment/understanding while minimizing time invested.
Any comments on this – or on the most efficient approach to watching other TV series/movie combos – is welcome. Otherwise I'll blog here about my progress periodically.

This show is simultaneously remarkable and ridiculous. I figured Matt and Trey were only copying the marionette style – it's similar to what they do with South Park. But the Team America concept is a clear extrapolation of the altruistic heroes in Thunderbirds, a jet-set rescue group with more money than God.
The dodgy American accents by Englishmen must be payback for Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. It seems weird for a British "programme" to feature a group of American characters. Was this a strategic move for wider distribution? Or the most logical choice for "World Police" – even in a 60s kids' show?

>>2693I think it was using the sci-fi B movie style which is very American. Stingray and Captain Scarlet were the same from what I remember. I also recall really liking Captain Scarlet when I was 4 or 5.

>>2700Great point, that makes a lot of sense. I also took it for granted that the moon landing hadn't yet happened in '66, but there was a lot of enthusiasm for the space race. These shows captured that moment in time and projected it into the future.
Apparently there's a new documentary on all the Gerry Anderson projects:

> Three movie theaters say Paramount Pictures has ordered them not to show Team America: World Police one day after Sony Pictures surrendered to cyberterrorists and pulled The Interview. The famous Alamo Drafthouse in Texas, Capitol Theater in Cleveland, and Plaza Atlanta in Atlanta said they would screen the movie instead of The Interview, but Paramount has ordered them to stop. (No reason was apparently given and Paramount hasn’t spoken.) Team America of course features Kim Jong Un’s father, Kim Jong Il, as a singing marionette. YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. Did anyone watch Danger 5 from Australia? It's another Thunderbirds-inspired show.

The fun thing about thunderbirds and CS is that its campy, but being sincere at the same time
