What a film.
What a beautiful film.
Does it have ANY flaws?

Well I watched it. Definitely one of my favorites from 2016! However I do have a few small criticisms. This may just be me being a retard but I thought that the subtitles were unnecessary when the Japs were speaking. I think that it would have added to the whole 'foreign land' effect if there were none. Some of the shots that implemented CGI really irked me. One last thing is that I think that if Scorsese allowed some of the downright beautiful shots to breath it would have benefited the contemplative and internal nature of the film. So basically add long shots and take away the CGI (or most of it) and the subtitles. Definitely worth a watch and in my opinion a lot more timeless than some of his previous efforts.

Completely agree with not having any subtitles at all for those scenes. And the nature shots needed to be a bit more longer too.
Have anyone here seen the 1971 version? And what do you think about it?
Also, The Inquisitor was a really fun character.

it was pretty interesting, he took a lot of influence from Mizoguchi and stole some shots from Ugetsu. Garfield was a lot better than I anticipated him to be but his accent was irritating at times. Neeson and Driver were great as well

After thinking about for a few days I was not that impressed. The cinematography, staging, and so forth were great but I was kind of bored. I'm not sure if it was the characters or the pacing.

Why are you on /film/.
This film was so far from boring that it would be 12 hour flight either way to find even the word "boring".

Boring is not right, but after thinking about a while I think that the film was not as memorable as I had previously thought. I think that there are WAY better religious films out there.

Also was Andrew Garfield's performance really that great?

isn't the novel this is based on basically a rip-off of 1984?

I enjoyed it yes. Definitely the best Scorsese work in a very long time...
Although it was weird as hell, watching supposed characters from my country speaking in perfect english. I guess that's how germans feel watching old world war 2 films.

the conclusion undermines the whole film. Sure, that's the book's fault, but they made it worse by ambiguously suggesting Christ spoke to him.
But, the first three quarters of the film is, as you say, excellent viewing

The strangest thing for me was not the fact that they were able to speak perfect English, but the fact that they couldn't say one word of Portuguese or Latin properly. Regardless, it was a decent film better than most of the trash of 2016.

That's always kind of funny. I tried to think of some other examples (besides Nazis)
All Quiet on the Western Front - Germans in WWI speak English. You could say it makes them more relateable to the American audience who fought on the opposite side of the war
The Silent Star - East German sci-fi with scenes from around the world. A science professor lectures an American classroom in German.
Spaghetti westerns - most everyone looks and speaks Italian
