Is filmmaking discussion welcome here?

So, I'm about to buy my first entry-level professional camera. I can't decide between getting a Panasonic GH2, hacking it and buying some lenses or getting a GH4 with a single lens.

People online worship the hacked GH2, and I've seen some amazing results with it (Upstream Color by Shane Carruth being a hell of an example), however it seems that the GH4 truly is the future of DLSR entry-level cameras, with my only problem being the $600 difference in price.

What do?

Are you able to try either of them first? I think the most important thing is to be comfortable with the tools you use.

What sorts of projects are you interested in shooting?

Yeah, I've messed around with a GH2 before. I really liked its design and software, felt intuitive to me. The GH4 is lighter and has some extra features, so I guess I would be confortable with it too.

I have a screenwrite for a short film. It involves lots of outdoors scenes, using very low natural light, with slow, soft pans and steadicam.

true that. i'm shooting with a hi8 sony handycam. and it's beautiful

unfortunately I can't help you op, because I don't actually really know anything. I would go with the cheaper one, then you can also get the other equipment you need, especially sound recording gear, which imo is more important for making something that doesn't scream amateur. but of course it depends on how much 600 dollars is to you, to me that's a big difference because I'm a poor wage slave

I'm a wage slave too, but I'm a frugal mf so I have some cash saved. But yes, I guess I'll pick a cheaper so there's enough money left to actually buy some lenses. Good ones are really, really expensive.

Not OP, but how does getting a used 50d with some old FD lenses sound for someone starting out?

Also plan on getting a decent tripod and mic.

A used 50D could work with MagicLantern. Lenses and light will always be an issue.

We've recently had a thread on /tech/ about free photography/film software but the thread is right at the bottom of the catalog as I write out this post. Here are a few links from the thread for FLOSS software related to film making

What do you think of DV?

At the sub-$2000 range, imo, DSLR needs very heavy post-processing to match DV. There's a loss of clarity, but it DV retains a certain processed feeling to its image, like film. Unprocessed prosumer DSLR is plain repulsive.

Can't find much info though, looking online stores I'm only finding cheap, ugly with tacked on crap clearly built for moms. Something with proper balancing would be nice, I was thinking of older professional models that have fallen in price.

So I looked at movies that were shot in DV and dug up the cameras they used. I could only think of Perdo Costra using one In Vanda's Room (embedded) and Colossal Youth, it was the Panasonic DVX100, and Lynch used the Sony PD150 for Inland Empire, both are at $500 on AMZ down from ~$1k and ~3.5k MSRP respectively.

And it might be just amateur/untalented cinematographers, but those movies look a hell of a lot better than any of the student projects I've seen filming on prosumer canons/panasonic that includes Upstream Color, it's a hell of an example alright.

But everyone seems to be completely adverse to DV, seeing it 100% as a joke. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I mean right now I've been impulsively accumulating shots on my iphone, sometimes staged, sometimes not. They're not worthless shots but they are on that format. I just want functional for around $500 that I can keep handy in my backseat that succeeds in capturing the shot, not something for my kickstarted short film.

I also feel like the DV look is something engaging that can be worked with like film's grainy warmth, and not only through ironic association to home video. I always feel like you have to work against DSLR, since raw footage not coming from a RED looks like it's coming from an overproduced porno or OKcupid ad.

For the record, I'm not a gearfag, I've only directed with DSLR, and not personally handling them for the most part. I really don't understand or have done much research on the technical difficulties with DV, no one I've talked to has any experience with it… besides their family's home video

DV is just fine. it really is just the association with home video that makes people not want to see/use it I think. I personally love the look

OK, I'll be a DV skeptic here. I thought Inland Empire looked very dull. The greens and reds weren't green and red enough for me, shadows not black enough.

What are examples of DV looking better? It works okay for documentaries I think. Or maybe you can do anything these days in post-processing … I don't know much about it really.

Ok, gonna post my question here, even if nobody is ever gonna read it:

Looking to start making my own videos.

Looking into cameras, found a few good camcorders and actioncams

>Goals:

Videos of myself, presentations, lectures, maybe screen-/Game-recordings, I heard camcorders can do that sorta thing with an HDMI-connection

>Pricerange:

200-450€

>Possible Candidates:

The W570 by Panasonic has been praised by a lot of reviews, seems solid and within the pricerange.

Some Companies seem to try getting it on with actioncams, downsizing their existing Camcorders to a more action-cam-appropriate design. The Kodak 360° cam seems cool. Disadvantages: the les is kinda small and I know that's one of the 2 most important factors.

Mostly seated at a desk or not? The actioncams look very impressive but it doesn't sound like you envision using one very often

I havent bought a camera in a while so I will defer to more knowledgeable people for specific model recommendations

Yeah, mostly Tripod-based stuff.

I really have to see, because I'm still looking for a room to recordings in.

How would you use the Kodak 360?

It would be fun to go skiing, kayaking, skydiving with one. Or strap it to a drone (maybe drones already have those cameras)

That said I'm not sure I'd buy one. I'd probably favor a standard GoPro type camera because it seems more practical. I don't have a 360 degree television or computer monitor.

im not experienced but.. i would say, you need to find a way to represent that idea in a simple visual manner. just try to distill things into as simple an image as possible. if you have some tremendous, epic plot in mind, just pare it down; as above, so below, make a microcosm of your huge idea, it will still lead to the same thing, you know what i mean?

Actual filmmaking seems anethma to any chan beyond pre-production.

In order to do even the shittiest project you need to meetup / know at least a few people, unless your going for Youtube fame...

Good advice

I'm not an expert either but remember you don't need to include every detail onscreen. Make the audience participate, let them fill in some of the blanks

This looks like it could be really useful for historical reenactments and documentaries, but 360 cameras give the audience much more control over visual composition than usual and thus probably wouldn't be practical for more traditional films without rethinking many conventions first.

The creativity of this project stands out for me. How did you develop the sand language? Everything looks great, especially some of those giant clouds near the end.
