With Easter and Passover this week, it's an opportune time to think about cinematic depictions of faith and religion. The film to spur the discussion is Cecil B. DeMille's silent account of the adult life of Jesus Christ.

> In a genre that deserves the best that artists can offer but is too often plagued by mediocrity, DeMille's flawed but powerful The King of Kings remains one of Hollywood’s most remarkable achievements. ~~ Decent Films

> Whether you’re religious or not, King of Kings is a monumental technical achievement of its era. Most notable are its impressive cinematography, ghostly special effects which must have been shocking in its day, and the appearance of an early form of color in two of its scenes — a two-strip Technicolor predecessor that remains one of few uses of color in a silent film. ~~ AMC Movie Guide

In addition to discussing The King of Kings, I think we should broaden the scope to evaluate other portrayals of religion onscreen. Do religious films face unique challenges that other films do not? What positive and negative traits stand out in the films you've seen? Is there a tradeoff between the sacred and the entertaining?

My preferred Jesus movie might be Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew – not bad at all for an atheist!
The King of Kings is still very good though. The first half of the 155 min. roadhouse version is a tad slow …. intentful stares but not much action. So I see why they trimmed some of those scenes from later releases. But the second half is excellent when things finally start happening….

I almost ended up watching it today but it was a terrible English dub. Sad because those first five minutes were absolutely beautiful.

>Do religious films face unique challenges that other films do not?

Yes

It not only have to be historically(biblically) reliable, but it also have to be engaging and transcendent.
Which is very hard do to in any historical film.

Its like in Noah, religious people didnt like it because it wasnt biblical, and atheist didnt like it because it was too metaphysic.

And then you have chick like religious films like God's not Dead, that religious people like, and that atheist despise.

It very though to make solid christian movies.

good christian films?

They dont have to be explicitly christian or bible based.

But you know, still have some beautiful spiritual side or teachings.

I'm a big fan of the 1925 version of Ben-Hur. It's probably better than the Charlton Heston version
