Same thing happened to me in one church I went to. Went to a Bible study group and had some good discussions then the sermon ended up being some weird storytime without any scripture or direction really.

I asked a friend from the Church afterwards why it was like that and they thought it was to attract more new members by not getting too deep into doctrine and focusing on the message . That made sense to me since I have left a church before for preaching doctrines I didn't agree with.(dispensationalism to an extent of essentially saying Jews didn't need Christ since they are chosen and if you didn't support the nation of Israel you weren't a true Christian)

I disagree with the practice of keeping your beliefs vague to get more members but it seems the most likely explanation.

Revelation chapter 18 gives a description of the fall of Babylon and in verse 23 it gives us the reason why all nations were deceived. This may be shocking for many people. Let’s read what the Bible says. Referring to the fall of Babylon Revelation 18:23 says “And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.”

By the “sorceries” of Babylon all nations were deceived. The Greek word for “sorceries” in verse 23 is “pharmakeia” [far-mak-i’-ah]. According to the Thayer Greek Dictionary “pharmakeia” is “the use or administering of drugs; poisoning; and sorcery, magical arts, often found in connection with idolatry and fostered by it.” If you put the original Greek word “pharmakeia” in place of the English word “sorceries” the end of verse 23 would say, “For by thy pharmakeia were ALL nations deceived”! “Pharmakeia” is where we get our English word “pharmacy”! Pharmacy is a well organized and professionalized system that administers poisonous drugs. The Bible reveals that Babylon will deceive all nations by the use of pharmacy that is in connection to “magical arts” and idolatry. “Magical arts” has its deep roots in witchcraft and the occultic world. We don’t have to do a deep Bible study to know that Satan is directly behind the magical arts and God’s people should have nothing to do with it. Professed deceived Christians today use “magical arts” under the disguise of contemplative prayer, “christian” humanism, and spiritual formation. In general those involved in sorcery, witchcraft, and magic are known to use “magic” potions to “heal”, deceive, poison, control, or kill someone.

Pharmacy mainly uses a mixture of toxic chemicals, metals, and/or synthetic elements to produce “pharmaceuticals” that are designed to manipulate the biochemistry or metabolic functions of the body in an attempt to get a “desired” affect in the treatment of a disease or sickness. It's always a little odd how much they love the symbols and motifs of the Church, but little of that is reflected in Japanese life.

The only person I can think of that's associated with anime who is probably a little more sincere about it is Yoko Kanno. She's a prolific composer for a lot of anime. She had Catholic parents and first developed her music training in church. I don't know if she's exactly religious herself, but you can hear the influence in masterpieces like the GitS theme:

I think that for most of them Christian religions are just another mythology, like Greek or Egyptian. They don't use it for any kind of deep theological meaning, even when the symbolism is accurate it's just world-building for them rather than any kind of theological relevancy.

I really like Death Note's religious imagery. This may have been spoken of before, but Light is often presented as a God like figure; he even calls himself "the god of the new world", as he's able to kill anyone he has the name/face of. When I first watched the foot drying scene, I was weirded out, but then I remembered that passage from the Gospels where Jesus has His feet soaked in perfume and the woman kisses them and dries them with her hair. Everyone and their mom who watched this scene will tell you that Light and L are gay for each other, when in reality that's just wrong as they hate each other. What's really happening here is that *spoilers* Light is about to judge and kill L with the death note, so the writers threw a Biblical allusion in there to try and foreshadow what was about to happen. Earlier while in the rain L says he can hear bells (probably alluding to church bells) signifying that he is about to be judged by a god like being, aka Kira. If you've never seen this show definitely give it a watch. I'm sure many of you have picked up on this allusion, but I just wanted to talk about it to be honest.

Though I haven't actively watched any anime in recent years.

I recently started watching Alps No Shoujo Heidi again. And I can definitely recommend it as a wholesome anime. Good old classic anime, and due to the setting/source material it has some Christian elements in it. (Like the main character Heidi being determined to learn to read, so she can read/sing an old German hymn for an elderly blind lady.)

For me it was a pleasant watch in these odd times.

I asked him repeatedly what he is or with what organization he associates: Masons? Satanists? Black magicians? Any mystery school? When I asked him if he's a Jew, he said yes, a Sephardim, and I replied: "Ah, now all makes sense" and ended the conversation. Later on he said he lied to me about him being a Jew. I did not care, this was the only positive answer he gave me, and a detailed one. He staid in the same hostel as I and he wanted to break into my room at 2AM but my door was locked. He later tried at somebody else's room. He had dark, empty eyes and his skin was sickly pale. A demonic individual but I can't deny I had some fun winnie the pooh with him.
