I went to the NYC solstice. I really loved it last year so I was excited for it this year. Sadly (and ironically) it was worse than last year. Not well rehearsed or prepared IMO, and I didn't like the new songs that were added this year. It was still relatively good, just disappointing.

I did have fun at the NYC mega-meetup though. (I didn't go last year.) Circling is surprisingly interesting and I had some good conversations.

(Thanks for listening, LiveJournal)

This is an oversimplification. For you to go to a rationalist meetup a weighted combination of several factors must exceed a threshold. These factors include how ugly, weird and lonely you are, and the extent to which you have no life. You can draw useful conclusions from this model. For example, if you notice you are more handsome than the other attendees of a meetup, you are one or more of more weird, more lonely or more lacking in life than they.

"But I can't find a gf!"

Why don't you get an Eastern European one, then? There are plenty of quasi-legitimate 'international dating sites' out there with usually real women who generally aren't green card scammers. Plenty of intelligent, driven women (look, we're grading on a curve here) who know they don't have a future in their Slav shithole. Talk to a cute one, draw up a prenup, go full Quiverfull with the birth rate. Relaxed homeschooling, nearly unschooling, go Montessori if you can't swing that. Keep them away from psychiatry, time vaccines to get the ideal amount of autism. Inherit the Earth.

>This is not a discussion about slavery in general. The discussion can be generalized, but you'd have to generalize it by talking about signaling and cultural norms in general, not by talking about slavery in general.

I have to talk globally because that's the only way to remove the log in the eyes of SJWs. What you described is better explained by cognitive diversity instead of by slavery.

One of my favorite examples is that of Trinidad and Tobago. Please explain to me why the fuck the descendants of indentured Indian servants are doing much better than the descendants of black slaves who were freed before them?

>This is what was meant by "segregation" in that context, and what would broadly be understood to be meant with the word "segregation" in that context:

>You seem to be using another definition to derive a meaning that has nothing to do with this discussion.

I remember that there used to be a lot of discrimination against Japanese folks in America, including sundown towns. However they are doing well. Apparently racism had negligible impact on them.

Instead of saying underperforming tropicals are fucked up because of muh ebil whitey, here is my hypothesis: They are fucked up because their ancestors never learned intensive agriculture and the civilized way of life. Yeah, I was thinking about fast vs slow boards a little. For example, why was I writing an effortpost when part of its thesis is "effortposts are a weak strategy"? One answer is that I'm an adaptation executer and not a fitness maximizer, but I can also tell you I wouldn't have bothered if I didn't expect this thread to be near the top of the catalog for weeks: impossible on a fast board.

I also kind of ignored thread-opening strategy. For me it's high effort with uncertain reward, but as you and other anons have identified there are plenty of efficient openers. I think that fits with my general hypothesis.

(You)-efficiency = (You)s/effort

(You)-efficient posting strategy -> becomes part of imageboard culture

Not (You)-efficient -> doesn't

(You)-efficient, but also like/upvote/retweet efficient -> disappearing from imageboard culture in 2018

Oh, I also hand-waved anonymity earlier, but I think it fits neatly into the (You)-efficiency model if we replace "effort" with the more general "cost". Some strategies have a real-life social cost without anonymity, and some even have a within-the-community cost under pseudonymity.

I agree that a good utility function is (for now) a platonic ideal that can only be uncertainly and somewhat arbitrarily approximated.

I don't think that a system being chaotic has to make it impossible to apply a utility function. It adds variance, but it doesn't necessarily preclude expected values.

And I don't think that such an approximation has to be useless. To be useless, it's not enough if it's imperfect - it has to do worse at satisfying the platonic utility function than other workable systems. I think QALY/$ estimates are good enough to be useful.

You can't prove with 100% certainty that it's good, but that goes for everything.

In the past I have been diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and more specifically social anxiety disorder.

It was so bad I couldn't even look people in the eye and I would start shaking whenever I feel like I am looked at, I would run out of classrooms at university because of anxiety attacks.

I can't remember what I was on back at the time.

I have now started a new course ( which basically guranatees a job ) and it's back. It's more under control because I am more mature and have learned to breathe, try to calm myself and distract myself but it still doesn't let me function as a human being. ( + )

I am too poor to afford therapy but my cousin works as a nurse. I have access to: paroxetine, citalopram, sertraline, venlafaxine, regabalin, tradozone and alprazolam.

( + ) I'm currently anticipating social situations and taking 0.50 of xanax ahead with like half or 3 quarters of an hour but this will not last me long because I'm developing resilience to the drug ( I used to take 0.25 ).

I exercise using the bodyweight fitness app whenever I can. I do not drink coffee, alcohol or energy drinks. I used to drink tea but at some point I realised black tea unsettles me and I kind of stopped.

My concerns are anhedonia and gaining weight because this happened last time.

I plan on informing myself for a few weeks first and I am seeking help.

If you can and want please share this post to communities which you think might me knowledgeable.

Psychiatric drugs are one step removed from witchcraft in terms of reliable efficiacy. The variation from person to person makes advice difficult.

As a starting point, you could try sertraline - it killed my crippling anxiety stone dead and replaced it with mild depression. Not a bad tradeoff.

Make sure you read the dosage suggestions for everything you try - I doubt dosing only in advance of social situations will do you any good in the long term. Again, side effects and effectiveness vary wildly from person to person, so perhaps do a trial with each medication you have access to and see what works best?

Note that I am not a psychiatrist, and am in fact only barely more qualified to talk on this subject than a neurotypical layman. For better advice (or at least a second opinion), I recommend r/slatestarcodex's weekly "Wednesday Wellness.

Now the average jalapeno looks like a fish with horse teeth, but you can carefully select the superior supermodel quality from JAV idols and race queens, making for fine wife choice. Most asians are very flat chested, but you can select for breasts by the same method, allowing you to get the ultimate combo of cute face, nice body, and proper waifu demeanor.

If you are saving up to become an effective altruist, then instead of wasting your money, combine the two best races, whites and japs, and make the world better by lowering racial tension and pooling our resources against the nignogs.

There has to be some rationality in here somewhere.

China is obviously defect/defect, but is Japan cooperate/cooperate or cooperate/defect?

the Moral Machine thing seems kinda silly as a research project, but I do like the little sliders it presents you with after your take the survey. I feel these would work great as a personality classification system, similar to the MBTI or the Harry Potter Houses.

Shit chart. Is the global average leaning towards saving the passengers or saving the pedestrians? If they wanted to lay out the chart like that, it would make much more sense for 0 to represent no preference in either direction.

Agreed, but I imagine for the Chinese it's more like "MY car is supposed to protect ME, fuck the unwashed peasants who couldn't even afford one".

Polyamory = good, because it's just your obsolete primate programming that makes you upset about Tyrone fucking your gf

EA = good, because your enlightened primate programming makes you care about maximising starving n*****s in Africa.

Am I missing something here or there is a contradiction?

Some utilitarians would be on board with that. Some utilitarians think that doesn't maximize utility (e.g. preference utilitarians) or even happiness (e.g. certain objections about unique brain states).

There exist EA people who would be on board with that. I don't know how many. I would think people who think tiling the universe with hedonium is good wouldn't object to wireheading either.

There also exist EA people who aren't utilitarians, even though the overall sensibilities of EA are pretty utilitarian. I don't know how many.

Most EA has much more mundane goals. Preventing malaria or improving nutritional intake of poor rural laborers using low-cost interventions is good whether you subscribe to preference utilitarianism or negative utilitarianism or hedonic utilitarianism.

>The reason polyamory is considered good by a lot of rationalists isn't that it suppresses obsolete primate programming, it's that it (presumably) makes the people involved happier.

So it's not good because it suppresses the (((obsolete))) primate desire to pair bond, sure, but it is good because it achieves the primate desire to experience happiness. Really makes me think. And what I'm thinking is that you haven't thought this through all the way. You never answered the other anon's question, "What are some terminal goals that are not primate heuristics?"

>Why not? Did the Terminal Goal Fairy come down and bless your dear monkey brain with some sort of exogenous goals?

In explicit justifications rationalists give, like the OP seems to be criticizing, it's an instrumental goal. In the first case it's not "this is primate programming so you should get rid of it" but "this is primate programming so it's okay to get rid of it to achieve X".

>You never answered the other anon's question, "What are some terminal goals that are not primate heuristics?"

That's what the first paragraph was about. Explicitly stated terminal goals are not always primate heuristics. Direct causes are primate heuristics, but talking in terms of those is usually not useful.
